[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Commanding Officer's Quarters]"'If you had a child' is a bit of a concession," Judy quipped. "I would've said 'when you have a child.'""This semantical streak is how you know she was raised by lawyers," Max teased, taking the focus off Jovireh. From his delivery of the word "lawyers", he might as well have said Judy was raised by wolves. She chuckled. "Well, I do believe we have sides to prepare."

[PO2 Jovireh Velal / Devra Kul - Front Ear - CO's Quarters] "I can only imagine getting grounded in accordance with the law!" Jovireh laughed. Had her father followed his parents' footsteps and joined the Romulan military instead of becoming a scientist, she very likely would have had a far more strict upbringing. While many aspects of her childhood had left a bit to be desired, she'd never say that her parents had been too hard on her. Though it certainly seemed like Judy had turned out well, so maybe Human lawyers weren't as bad as some species. At the mention of the side dishes, Devra told Max how long to leave the meat in the oven before turning back to the remaining ingredients. The rest of the lesson went quickly, as setting the rice to cook on the stove and mixing the various vegetables together in a separate pot with a dash of spices was the simplest part of the preparation. But she did her best to describe each item they used, and the type of flavor it would add.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Commanding Officer's Quarters]As the cooking process went on, the synthehol loosened Judy's tongue, allowing various spicy anecdotes to come out, although this was interrupted briefly when Anna announced that she was going out to dinner with a friend (a female one, she promised). As they finished cooking, Judy left the kitchen for the living room, but, rather than stop at the couch, made her way to the Baby Grand piano that stood off to one side. She started by playing scales to warm up, not a display of virtuosity.

[PO2 Jovireh Velal / Devra Kul - Front Ear - CO's Quarters] Devra was grateful to see her daughter relaxing more as the evening went on. Joining in the laughter, the jokes and the stories... It seemed she was finally starting to be able to separate Judy from Captain Eastman. She also caught the grin on Jovireh's face when Anna specified who she was going to dinner with. Or rather, who she was not going to dinner with. Jov had already been 20 by the time she had a real social life, at which point Devra knew she needed to let her explore and figure out her place in society in her own way, lest she risk pushing her away completely. That didn't mean she hadn't worried though. As Anna left, she also noticed her daughter's expression falter slightly, accompanied by a wave of emotions Devra couldn't quite decipher without prying too deeply. The flash of images was enough for her to know what, or at least whom, her daughter was distracted by, though. "If you don't want me to know who he is, you really shouldn't think so loudly," she warned her telepathically. Jovireh's eyes widened slightly, a faint blush appearing on her cheeks, which she tried to hide with a cough as she quickly recovered and pushed her thoughts away. Though she was grateful her mother had at least not made that statement verbally. Grabbing her glass, she followed Judy into the living room, watching in slight fascination as the woman began to play the piano. She certainly did have a wide variety of hobbies...

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Commanding Officer's Quarters]Max watched Judy from the couch, waiting to see what she would do to entertain their guests. However, then, seeing her glancing towards him for encouragement, he gave her just that. "Sing us a song, honey," he urged, and she got an idea. On top of the piano sat a harmonica in a holder, which the older woman put over her neck, and then began to play. "That was Piano Man, a song from 1970s Earth, by a Jewish fellow from Long Island called Billy Joel," she explained, after she finished. "We're both quite fond of the music from that time period."

[PO2 Jovireh Velal / Devra Kul - Front Ear - CO's Quarters] The two women watched eagerly and intently as Judy entertained the small gathering. When she finished the song, Devra gave an appreciative applause. "Oh that was wonderful! You're a woman of many talents!" Jovireh, more reserved as always, still nodded with a bright smile. "I can see why you like it," she replied in response to Judy's explanation of the song choice. She also agreed with her mother's assessment. The music, the cooking and baking, the crochet she'd seen in her office... It was clear she was speaking from experience when she suggested that a creative hobby might help her.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Commanding Officer's Quarters]Judy smiled, taking in the compliments. She knew she was good - by amateur standards, of course - and in this pursuit, unafraid to show off. "I've been at this since I was 5, you know. That was actually how we realized I need these," she shared, pointing to her glasses. "I had such a hard time reading sheet music.""We actually have pictures," Max said with a cheeky tone, as he took up a PADD. He pulled up a photo of 5-year-old Judy, blonde hair held up in pigtails, clad in a red dress with white polka dots, and sporting a pair of glasses not unlike the ones she was currently wearing (six decades and so many light-years away), seated behind a piano at her parents' home. "The more things change, the more they stay the same," he quipped, passing the PADD to their guests. Judy strained to see which photo was being shown.

[PO2 Jovireh Velal / Devra Kul - Front Ear - CO's Quarters] "Oh how precious!" Devra cooed as she looked at the picture. Jov leaned in slightly to get a better look, grinning. She could definitely see the resemblance. "We lost all of our pictures with the ship," Devra continued, reminiscent. Sometimes it was still difficult to believe just how much they lost in a single day. A past, present, and future... A life, a home... Memories and dreams... She looked up with a smile, handing the PADD back to Max. "I'm sure my parents still have the ones we sent them over the years. I doubt even Armageddon could pry them away," she added with a small laugh. Jov nodded in agreement. While she'd only met her grandparents a few times, she could only imagine the guilt trip they would pull if Devra asked for even a single picture back. At least they were safe there. It would make her mother feel better, knowing that at least some pictures of their past still existed.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Commanding Officer's Quarters]Max nodded. He could only imagine the pain of losing so many memories, and so many mementoes. At least Jovireh's grandparents still had some. "You could ask them to send you copies," Max suggested. Judy, meanwhile, left the piano to join Max on the sofa. "You could also go visit them. I'm sure Jovireh has enough vacation days, and I can lend you a runabout," she suggested. "It still baffles me that they have so many runabouts to hand out. It's like they grow on trees," Max joked. Admittedly, he and Judy had borrowed runabouts - and the Captain's Yacht - for quite a few trips.

[PO2 Jovireh Velal / Devra Kul - Front Ear - CO's Quarters] Devra perked up at the suggestion of taking a vacation to her homeworld, but Jovireh only grinned. "And miss out on the adventures here?" While her routine life on the station was rarely eventful, the times she'd served on the Mac had been the opposite. While she had yet to break up any Klingon barfights, she found it to be a nice blend. Honestly, she hadn't even considered a vacation in a long time. At the disapproving look she got from her mother, though, she laughed and shook her head. "It would be nice to see Betazed again. I haven't been since we moved to Earth. Have you?" She knew Devra hadn't left Earth while she was there, but she may have taken a vacation or two in the six years since. Devra shook her head. "No. The trip here was the first I'd been on a ship after losing ours." While her tone was neutral, Jovireh suddenly realized why her mother had never moved back to Betazed. A small pang of guilt twisted her stomach for not making the connection sooner, but she knew now wasn't the time to bring it up. "I'll see how much leave I have saved up, so you can start planning." And brush up on her piloting skills if they were taking a runabout.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Commanding Officer's Quarters]The connection in question, Devra's trauma keeping her planetbound, set both Judy and Max frowning. It was surely, as painful as can be. "Goodness, that's awful."She just couldn't help herself. "The trip here must've been hard."At the very least, Judy was making herself available to Devra to talk. If not now, then later.

[PO2 Jovireh Velal / Devra Kul - Front Ear - CO's Quarters] Devra just gave a small nod and reassuring smile at the understanding statements. "At times, yes," she admitted honestly. "But over the years I've gotten... decent... at keeping myself distracted when need be." It helped immensely that the transport here had been quite different from their science vessel, and even the Starfleet ship that had rescued them. It was simple enough to avoid looking out the viewports as the stars drifting by. She turned her gaze back to her daughter. "Well, you just let me know when you find out how long you can take off, and when. There's no point in starting to plan anything when we don't have a timeframe." Jov shook her head with a small laugh. "You and I both know as soon we leave here, you're going to find out how long it takes to get from here to Betazed, and then call your parents to let them know not to make any travel plans around that time." Devra looked offended. "Of course I am! Making reservations is not the same thing as making plans!"

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Commanding Officer's Quarters]Accepting Devra's comment about distraction with a nod, the couple let the conversation turn to the more classic banter. "There's nothing wrong with covering all your bases," Judy sounded out. "Just don't let your mother make any plans without you in the room," Max warned Jovireh. "And don't try to save too many vacation days for later, because we've known some officers who retired with outrageous numbers of unused vacation days."In the world of replicators, having vacation days on the way out of a job just didn't make as much sense as in centuries past. "You know, what he's really saying is that he wants me to use more vacation days, because one of these days I'll be retiring," Judy quipped. "Not anytime soon, mind you."Judy had promised Max that she'd hang up her uniform by the time she hit 80. Would she run the clock on that? Maybe.

[PO2 Jovireh Velal / Devra Kul - Front Ear - CO's Quarters] "Oooh, you're right," Jovireh replied to Max's statement about not letting her mother make plans without her involvement. A concerned look crossed her features at the thought. "She just might try to arrange a party with every bachelor on Betazed." Devra smiled and took a drink from her glass, but did not deny the accusation. Jov turned back to the others at the mention of saving up too much vacation time. "Oh, I'm sure there will be some sort of special occasion that I'll want to take an extended time off for. I've just never really been the type to take time off just because I could." Part of that was because on Starbase 173, she'd always known if she took a break off the station, it would be a lot harder to convince herself to go back. After moving to Front Ear? She hadn't felt worn down and in need of a break yet. At least not for a period longer than a week or so, never long enough to actually plan anything and submit the request.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - Commanding Officer's Quarters]"Special occasions have a way of never coming," Judy cautioned. Max then looked at her, and she at him, a split-second exchange that conveyed more than enough information between them. "I think Judy has a story she'd like to tell," Max announced. "Yes, indeed. You see, before we moved in together, Max had a modest little studio apartment. There was only one expensive object in the whole place, and that was this bottle of really fancy wine. He'd have a few bottles around at any time, but this one was fancy."Max nodded, not feeling the need to issue corrections. "After a few times that I'd stayed over at his place, I asked him about it, and he explained that he was saving it for a special occasion."
"However long after that, I don't even remember what we were up to, but we decided it was special enough to open the bottle."Max wriggled his eyebrows in a way that implied he did remember what they'd done, but didn't care to say it aloud. Catching that gesture, Judy blushed slightly, the memory returning to her as well. "Turns out, in the 15 years that I'd owned the bottle, the wine had gone bad," Max finished the story. "We still have the bottle, sitting around in our bathroom, as a reminder."
