[ Kaya Som ]Espada and McDonough wasted no time patching in the Captain. Charlie was at her side, coming down, and Kaya caught her glance. Kaya could only lift her eyebrows in return, completely unsure what was about to happen. At least Charlie was here. Still possessing some modicum of respect for Captain Eastman, Kaya got down from the table and stood on her feet. The Captain looked ragged and, completely unexpectedly, her first words were that of a desperate parent finding a lost child. "Yes, ma'am," Kaya responded simply, trying to keep her emotions in check although she'd never been great at that. "I apologize." Was she really sorry, though? She had to face the fact that she'd caused a lot of people a lot of worry and that her lack of contact could be partially characterized as spite. But she wasn't sorry she'd left, although she was now dreading the repercussions. Judith Eastman, Charlie Fox

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Lawrence Eastman's Quarters, Front Ear Station]Judy sized up the room appearing on her PADD. There was Charlie Fox - as expected, although seemingly rather more docile than usual. And there was Kaya, looking awfully tense. "Apology accepted."Judy knew that two words weren't going to absolve any real guilt, but it was a start. She could tell that whatever had led Kaya here, it wasn't treasonous intent (although Harmon would surely vet that), which left all types of impulsive actions in the realm of possibility; if Kaya didn't sincerely regret them now, she would sooner or later. "You know, I believe I've told you before that you're a very talented young woman, with a promising future ahead of you. I still think that's true, and I don't want to let one bad decision blow that all up."Judy took a deep breath. "If you want to come back to Starfleet, we'll fight for you. Chief Ozu, Dr. Baker, and I would all like to have you back on our crew, or, if you'd rather transfer, we'll see to it you're given a sensible posting. We'll have to discuss... this incident, of course, and there will be repercussions, but we won't let this ruin your career."
"If you'd rather not come back, the dishonorable discharge process isn't as painful as it used to be, and we can give you a rec letter for civvie work."Her characteristically quiet voice, naturally suited to speaking in a home with sleeping children, conveyed the usual thoughtfulness, and the quiet confidence of one who didn't need to assert herself. Glancing at the bottom corner of her screen, Judy noticed the handcuffs. "Regardless, I don't think these restraints are really necessary." [NPCs - PO2 Kevin McDonough & PO2 Alex Espada - 6th Floor, East Wing, Federation Embassy, First City, Qo'nos]Kevin and Alex sized up the old lady. She seemed to care greatly for her lost Trill, and she'd clearly been in a real hurry to get on the line here. She also looked older now than in her official portrait, which was... something. However, when she objected to the restraint, the two just looked at each other, unsure if that was an order.

[ Kaya Som ]Captain Grandma, they called her. Kaya had often found Captain Eastman's manner difficult to anticipate but that should have been to her credit - the stiff-collared Starfleet Way didn't leave much room for ... whatever this was. Kaya furrowed her brows, unsure of what she expected from her commanding officer and unsure, even, of what she wanted. I want to be left alone, Kaya thought. She wanted time and space, where she could get away from what happened. But that wasn't an answer she thought anyone would accept, and it wasn't something some extra shore leave could provide. The Starfleet procedural jargon hung heavy in the air. Transfer, sensible posting, discharge. Kaya waited silently as Captain Eastman spoke, feeling listless and untethered. She did animate, though, when the Captain requested her handcuffs removed. Finally some sense. When McDonough and Espada didn't immediately comply, Kaya made an effort to fill the gap. She snapped a finger twice to get their attention and gave them a look. What, did they thinks he was some kind of threat? She was wearing sandals. But the captain was owed a response. "Thank you, ma'am. But I don't know what I want. I needed space." Judith Eastman FYI Charlie Fox

[NPCs - PO2 Kevin McDonough & PO2 Alex Espada - 6th Floor, East Wing, Federation Embassy, First City, Qo'nos]Catching the snapping, Alex decided that the old lady's comment about the handcuffs was an order after all, and promptly undid the restraints. Kaya earned it. [Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Benjamin Eastman - Lawrence Eastman's Quarters, Front Ear Station]There was a philosophical tangent to go on, about the irony that space itself - ships and starbases - could be so claustrophobic, but Judy deemed now to be a bad time for it. "I understand."Kaya had been assigned to several of their biggest, most horrific debacles lately, and Judy didn't need to be told how that felt, or how that led them here; she could connect the dots. "This line of work can be grueling, for anyone. It grinds you down, and sometimes, you just can't put up with it. We've all been there; I've been there."The extended personal anecdote was filed aside for later use. "I really do think you should come back here. We can talk about your situation face-to-face, in a calmer..."As if to make Judy's point, the sound of a rattle came over from her end. It was Benny, completely out of line. Judy turned her head, and swiveled her torso, to the right, to look at the infant. "Benny, shhhhh, quiet. Mommy and Daddy are sleeping," Judy admonished him in cooing tones, elicitng a "sorry". She straightened up and turned her attention back to Kaya. "Sorry, I'm watching over the grandkids."There was a hint of embarrassment in Judy's voice, apologetic that she wasn't fully focused on the Trill's predicament. However, there was also the same old pride at having said grandkids. "As I was saying, if you come home, we can talk, and we can help you get your footing again, before you make an irreversible decision. If you take the discharge now, there's no coming back from that."Home was a wholly unintentional, yet completely honest, word to use. Judy thought of the station as a home, and she hoped those under her did too.

[ Kaya Som | Jeffires Tubes ]The cuffs came off and for lack of a better place to put her hands, she held them behind her back. Charlie was still on the table, their raft to Marva disappeared. Captain Eastman was being the picture of understanding, that caring commanding officer everyone wanted to have. The effect was only amplified when Eastman paused to tend to family. 'Come home.' Kaya felt a dull static in her ears and the intense wish to disappear. The station wasn't her home and neither the ship, and everyone aboard felt like a stranger. She'd been able to fit any material items that mattered into a single bag. The idea of going back made the static louder; she wrung her fingers behind her back. But leaving Starfleet. It was just as Captain Eastman said, another kind of inescapable permanence. She'd have failed at the Academy, failed at Joining, and failed at being a Starfleet engineer - running when she couldn't tolerate it. Kaya got stuck in the silence and glanced at Charlie for some clue. The holiday was over. Charlie Fox, Judith Eastman

[Charlie Fox - Table, Federation Embassy]When Kaya looked at her Charlie finally moved. She slid on her ass toward the end of the table, closer to where the Trill stood. She wet her lips, dry from the all too brief trip the nuts had offered, and spoke. "The trip back takes a few days," she said, trying to be reassuring, but also trying not to say too much in front of these strangers. She pretended Kaya's Captain wasn't there on the screen, and that Tweedledum and Tweedledee were still far from their raft to Marva. "You don't have to decide anything now, there's time."If Kaya wanted to leave, Charlie would understand that completely, but she'd be happier knowing that it was a decision she'd made for herself, and that she'd crossed all her t's and dotted all of those i's before peacing out for good. She reached out her hand just in case it was needed.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Lawrence Eastman's Quarters, Front Ear Station][NPCs - PO2 Kevin McDonough & PO2 Alex Espada - 6th Floor, East Wing, Federation Embassy, First City, Qo'nos]Judy paused for a moment to think, as she saw Kaya and Charlie doing the same. She eyed the two plainclothes gentlemen in the room, over the screen. "Young man?"Kevin stepped forward, naturally assuming he was the young man. "Yes, Captain?""What's your name?""McDonough, ma'am. Kevin Andrew Paul McDonough, Petty Officer 2nd Class," he answered nervously. "Mr. McDonough, thank you. I think you'd have to agree that it's more important to make sure Chief Som's trip is... secure, and pleasant, as befits a member of Starfleet, rather than necessarily the first ship out. The trip shouldn't be miserable.""Yes, ma'am, I agree, ma'am.""I'm glad we agree."Kevin was less scared of this individual woman (she seemed nice enough), than by the raw power of the position she embodied. She held the rank of Captain, and she did speak a bit like a schoolteacher. She took a deep breath and looked at the whole room. "I'll be in touch, but I've promised to make pancakes over here, and that's a promise I intend to keep. Buh-bye."Her image disappeared from the screen. "You must be something special," Alex said to Kaya.
