[NPC - Minister Teley - Akrath Island]"I'll always have time for the FNN," Teley answered. She was used to softball coverage from them, and this new reporter seemed likely to give it. Likelier still after the question she asked. It was almost teed up for Teley's favorite talking point. "My dear friend Palkor should check his own house first. If he had spent the last three years putting Arkaria's interests before his political advancement, and actually devoted himself to running the ministry of the Interior, this place would not have fallen apart."One never could let a good crisis go to waste. [Charlie Fox - Detention Centre, Akrath Island]Charlie nodded along with the Minister's words, agreeing with them wholeheartedly. "Oh yes, indeed Minister, someone will have to answer for this blunder. It does beg the question though: are the Federation's interests here safe, should outside investors begin looking elsewhere? Cait, for example, has never lost a murderer because everyone else seemed too busy politically grandstanding."Well, she didn't think they did. She had recent enough experience visiting the Kurjarian chief with Harmon on Cait during his trial, and he'd been locked up tight as a drum. But there was always a way around these things, and they were dealing with a Cardassian.

[Charlie Fox - Detention Centre, Akrath Island]Charlie knew that a flu outbreak on Cait had absolutely nothing to do with her question, or with a murderer escaping custody, but she didn't really care. And her viewers and readers wouldn't care either; it was just empty words from an empty politician and they were of no true consequence. If she was told that any of these people had been paid off by the Cardies to turn a blind eye Charlie wouldn't even blink. Finding out what had happened and how Du Toollamé had managed to give his jailers the slip, that was the story. And being able to prove that there was Cardassian involvement, well, that was the scoop of the month. While the other reporters were clambering to ask Teley more inane questions, Charlie separated herself from the bunch. It was a great distraction, really, and everyone in the Detention Centre would be scrambling to receive the Minister. Seizing the perfect timing and opportunity, Charlie began to wander, checking out the perimeter of the buildings. As for personnel, she saw only one sign of a patrolling officer as she walked, and so when she spotted the reinforced, hydraulic doors between two pillars in the open position, she slipped passed them and found herself in a courtyard. Between her position and the prison yard there was a security checkpoint... with nobody manning it. She slipped through that one too, and moved toward the small group of Fleeters gathered around the gaping hole in the wall. The group contained her least favourite person in the galaxy, Captain Eastman, but that didn't stop Charlie from approaching. Quietly, she slid up next to Joshua Niles. "Hi. Big hole."

[LCDR Tony Sleebaggo & LTJG Chloe Hudson - Cabin 19]It seemed neither the captain, nor presumably, the Arkarian authorities had the faintest clue what was going on. Such ineptitude by the Arkarian security and law enforcement services would quite likely result in Du Toollamé escaping regardless of Starfleet's best efforts to clean up the shambles they have left in their wake. Sleebaggo was mortally aggrieved by the Captain's decision to put a science officer in charge of one of the components of the investigation and manhunt. Perhaps the man was competent in his role, however he certainly did not have the breadth of experience and wisdom in these areas. Clearly, Sleebaggo and Taggart would have been the logical team leaders. It was an complete affront to all that is decedent. Absolutely shameful disrespect. Nevertheless, he kept a straight, stoic face and a stiff upper lip choosing to be the bigger man and move on. "We ought to make our way to the scene itself, lest we allow a chance for those who allowed Du Toollamé to escape through their failings," he told the Captain, assigning himself to her group. Before he had a chance to assign Chloe, Taggart requisitioned her. While Sleebaggo did intend to assign Chloe to that team anyway, he did not appreciate another officer ordering around his agents. Before he had a chance to speak up and instead assign Chloe to Quinn's team as way of reasserting his authority, Chloe had chirped up.
"Yes sir, very good," she said perhaps a bit too eager to be free from Sleebaggo, at least for a bit. Without looking back at her department head, she quickly legged it out of the room with Taggart before Sleebaggo had the opportunity to recall her. Once they were on the other side of the door she let out a slight but still audible sigh of relief. "Aye, sir," she nodded confidently as she made her way with them to the shuttle where she quickly began configuring the shuttle's sensors to focus on Du Toollamé's biosigns.
[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Cabin 19 -> Rec Yard, Akrath Island]Judy looked with general contentment at her people as they sorted themselves out, even the nastiest among them. "Thank you, Commander," Judy acknowledged Sleebaggo - the nastiness in question - with the patience only a parent could find. She saw the Vulcan Ensign, Enola, walking towards her, looking a bit like a lost puppy. "Ensign, welcome to Team A," the Captain said softly, in her grandmotherly way. Then, raising her voice to carry across the room, she added to the team leads. "Commanders, feel free to seize any facilities you need - on my orders or Minister Palkor's, whichever works - but be gentle."Into the cabin came Mabel, huffing and puffing. She was finally a decent runner, thanks to months of training for that fitness eval, but she clearly didn't do as well in the snow. "Sorry I'm late, ma'am.""Mabel, you're with me. Mr. Jenkins, you're on Team B."Mabel nodded. =A= "Eastman to Akrath Island, five to beam to the rec yard in one minute." =A= "Get your coats."Judy herself went to the closet to retrieve her trench coat, as well as her boots and a hat. It wouldn't do to visit prison in her slippers, would it? The members of Team A materialized a minute later, right outside cell block R, in the prison yard of Akrath Island. Before them stood a cell with a great big hole blown through it. Gusts of wind blew through fiercely. The group contained her least favourite person in the galaxy, Captain Eastman, but that didn't stop Charlie from approaching. Quietly, she slid up next to Joshua Niles. "Hi. Big hole." [ LT Joshua Niles - Cabin 10 -> Akrath Island prison ]With the teams neatly divided, and unfortunately Sleebaggo deciding to attach himself to the Captain rather than, say, finding himself a nice quiet hole in which to collate and deconflict information. It was amazing how even such a short acquaintance could breed so much dislike for the man. But, then again, he keenly reminded Niles of everything the Old Lady said he should do everything in his power to never become. And, to his relief, the Captain added Ensign Enola to the team as well as her own assistant. Between Mabel's administrative judo and the Intelligence officer's expertise, at least the gaps in his competence could be covered... Then, the word came and he was back into his three-quarters length coat, and a transporter beam captured them, and dropped them off into the prison's yard, and facing a gutted cell block, and a monstrous hole in the wall. A hole that did not have any kind of surgical precision to it, and the arcs of debris, some of them bloodstained, did not speak of any kind of directional blast either. Though, as he was thinking, a presence slipped by his side, and a voice he recognized addressed him. "Charlie, good morning" he greeted her with a bit of a smile; honestly, he would like to have a chance to chat, but instead he had some work to do. "If you will excuse me, I really should get to work here."As he stepped towards the mess in the hole, one hand came to his bearded chin as he considered what he was looking at, and what was already known. There had been a prison break, via a hold in the wall. A crude approach if there ever was one in a technological society, especially given the timely power failure that disabled the facility's sensors. Considering his options, he gestured towards Ensign Enola to come and join him, and he tapped his commbadge. =A= "Mac, this is Lieutenant Niles. I would need some tricorders sent to our location, please coordinate with Akrath Prison for transport."=A= =A= "Acknowledged, Sir, on their way,"=A= came over the comm channel from the officer heading up the anchor watch up in the yard. Of course, Niles expected it might take some time for the essential tools of the investigator's trade to get to them, as any prison rated for holding such high-risk and high-value prisoners would have transport inhibitors and beaming in and out needed coordination between both ends, or be initiated from within the prison itself. While waiting for the answer to this, he turned his attention to Ensign Enola, and if Sleebaggo didn't like that he was talking directly to her by virtue of her grey shirt, well, that would be his problem. "Ensign, I could use your eyes here, see if you're seeing what I'm seeing. Look at that blast pattern. No real directionality to it, as if the device went off within the wall itself. Looks crude, but given the chaos that came afterwards, I'm thinking the notion was to cover for the aim to extract Toollame and whoever pulled him out had to know exactly where he'd be so the blast wouldn't shred him, unlike whatever poor bastards were right there when it went off. What do you think?"And, while he had directed the Ensign to that, something else was bothering him, and then he turned around to face his superiors. "Captain, Commander, I'm not an expert on Arkarian prison policies, but something seems weird about Toollame being in that cell. He's a high-profile inmate involved in a murder conspiracy, and he comes complete with connections, resources and influence; shouldn't he have been in isolation deeper in the facility as he would've been in a Starfleet-run facility? And Captain, now that I'm thinking about this, do we know if the power surge that knocked out the sensors also took out the transport inhibitors? That hole in the wall immediately suggests 'no', but given who and what we're dealing with here I wouldn't be surprised if that was just to create a false trail either."

[Lt. Cmdr. Pierce Taggert / PO1 Jovireh Velal - Arkaria - Shuttle Launch Pad] Taggert gave the younger man a nod as he joined them, and climbed aboard the waiting shuttle. "If he does that'll make our job a little harder, but not impossible." Settling in the pilot's chair, he started the preflight checks, glancing over his shoulder at the newest addition to his team. "What's your field, PO?" He recognized Jenkins as one of the Captain's assistants, but wanted to put him to use doing something other than clerical work if possible. Following the Commander onto the shuttle, Jovireh settled down at one of the side consoles, quickly familiarizing herself with the sensor controls. Nerves began to eat at her as the gravity of the situation set in, and the importance of each of them doing their jobs not only right, but well. "Aft sensors functioning properly," she reported after running a test sweep of the area.

[LCDR Tony Sleebaggo - Akrath Island]
Sleebaggo turned the collar of his coat up to help block out some of the vicious wind. He stood looking over the hole in the wall before they were approached by some civilian of some sort. "Excuse me, ma'am," he said accusatorily as he looked the imposter up and down. It seemed the uppity Lieutenant had let her through. Worse, he had felt entitled to order around Sleebaggo's own departmental staff. Absolutely unacceptable. Before Sleebaggo answered the lengthy hypothesis Niles had decided to present his two superiors, despite being on the case for mere moments, Sleebaggo decided to address the youngsters impropriety. "Tell me, how many crime scenes have you been on, Leftenant?" he asked pointedly. "One would have thought that one requires very little experience to know not to let just anyone wander about," he huffed. "One would also expect that by the time an officer is promoted to leftenant they would understand the chain of command. Do not presume to order around my staff," he said looking between Enola and Niles. He then finally addressed the Lieutenant's insinuations. "As it seems your knowledge of protocol is sorely lacking, allow me to remind you that it is not at all proper to accuse the government with which are guests, acting at their invitation, of collusion. One should have far more evidence to off of before making such an insinuation, certainly more evidence than looking at a blast pattern for twenty seconds."

[LTJG Chloe Hudson - Shuttle]"I hope not. He probably had help getting out so he may have been given some toys to play with," Chloe said to Jenkins. She then got back to analysing the scanners. "Nothing on scanners so far, sir," she reported.

[ Ensign Rin Zakir - Cabin 19, The Lodge, Arkania] With most of the gathered personnel volunteering themselves for certain teams, Zak knew that he had to work a little on his ability to assess his own abilities and and step up where needed. It would come in time, he knew, but the more experienced officers seemed to have everything in hand for now. For now though, Taggert has assigned him to the team led by Lt. Commander Quinn, who would be investigating the traffic at the space port. "Aye sir", he acknowledged, before making his way over to what would be his team. He had briefly wondered if they would even allow him to take part in the investigation, with him being bajoran and the obvious (and arguably well founded) prejudice against cardassians such as Du Toollamé. Thankfully, it seemed as though they trusted him to act professionally and not let his personal feelings get in the way of the mission. He had no intention of letting them down. Approaching Quinn and Chief Som, he gave both an acknowledging nod, as well as flashing them a small smile. he had yet to be personally acquainted with either of them until today, and he could see no reason as to why they could not work together and get his done! [Control Center, Spaceport HQ] After being transported to their assigned location, the trio were quickly introduced to the senior director of the spaceport. Zak nodded in acknowledgement, as he was introduced, and began to assess the situation from his own technical stand point. He was clearly not at all comfortable with their presence, though that hardly took a trained psychologist to figure out. These people seemed to know what they were doing, as far as processing was concerned, but it was best not to take their efficiency for granted. Right now, everything was under scrutiny, and this would be a real test of his capabilities. He did wish he had a more experienced colleague with him, but what was the Earth expression? Baptism by fire? Yes, it was all very impressive, but he personally was much more interested in reviewing their security systems and seeing for himself if the whole 'nothing happens that we don't know about' thing was warranted. Footage could be tampered with or altered somehow, which would be just two examples of things to watch out for. He would be very interested in speaking with the security personnel here, and it seemed he would soon get his chance. With orders given, it was time for them to split up, with him set to meet with this Tullin Trax. It would all go much more smoothly if the people here were co operative, although he would be more worried if they weren't at least a little reserved about allowing access to certain systems. Oh well, time to get a feel for the situation! "Tullin Trax? Ensign Rin Zakir, Starfleet.", he introduced himself. "What can you tell me about the standard security procedures?", he asked, keen to get started right away. TAG: Isaiah Quinn , Kaya Som

Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Akrath Island]Charlie Fox making her appearance on the scene was hardly a dream for Judy, but the clash of egos between Sleebaggo and Niles was many times worse. Two officers, including a department head, getting into a macho standoff in front of the station's most anti-Starfleet journalist was a disaster. "Gentlemen," she addressed them, not raising her voice. "There's work to be done."Both men had tried to appropriate for themselves a managerial role - a command role. That role was hers. "Lieutenant, study the debris. Focus on the composition of it, and try to discern what type of device might have caused it. Commander, study the dirt here. Look for signs of movement, footprints, any pattern moving away from here. Ensign, I want you to go inside the cell block and try to chat with some of the prisoners. Mabel, look for the security footage," she instructed, quietly but resolutely. Then, she approached the journalist. "Ms. Fox, I'll vouch for your presence here, if you'll do me a favor. Do as Ensign Enola is doing, and see what information you can get from the jailbirds," she offered. Access to a crime scene - without an arrest for trespassing - was a heck of a commodity, after all.

[ CPO Kaya Som | Spaceport HQ towards Level 6 (Sensors & Systems) ]Ensign Rin wasn't the only one who had a reaction to the very typical 'nothing happens we don't know about'. Kaya would have blithely made the same claim about the Mac's computer systems, at least around company. That's just what you said, and it was true probably about 90% of the times it mattered. But no system was flawless and every network of protocols and checks and scans and reports had gaps and exploits. Kaya knew Director Ke knew this and Director Ke probably knew that, too. Kaya followed along on the tour, hands crossed over her chest, taking peeks at terminals when she could, lifting her chin in greeting to the Arkarians who looked up. Director Ke staffed them out and Quinn gave no objection. "Aye, Commander," Kaya said sweetly then peeled off towards the systems department on Level 6. "I'll keep in touch." All the doors on level six were transparent - the entire level had a new, airy quality. If there was a high-stakes diplomatic disaster going on you wouldn't know it here. The last door on the left slid open as Kaya approached. The lab was occupied by a few people, none of them obviously who she was looking for. "Hello, I'm Kaya Som. Director Ke said I should find Kel Kallis." Her uniform and rank insignia were apparent, so she didn't clutter up the greeting. Then, she interrupted herself and stepped forward, eyes wide at one of the larger consoles. " hah-de-zhi! is that the new KAINO?" [fn]Random acronym for some random technogadget.[/fn] Whether it was or it wasn't, the quickest way into a fellow engineer's heart was to compliment their flashiest kit. Isaiah Quinn (Kel Kallis)

Nerves began to eat at her as the gravity of the situation set in, and the importance of each of them doing their jobs not only right, but well. "Aft sensors functioning properly," she reported after running a test sweep of the area. [LTJG Chloe Hudson - Shuttle]"I hope not. He probably had help getting out so he may have been given some toys to play with," Chloe said to Jenkins. She then got back to analysing the scanners. "Nothing on scanners so far, sir," she reported. [NPC - PO2 Roland L. Jenkins - Shuttle]"Admin work, sir. I used to be in Ops," Jenkins answered Taggert. He was above all else a clerk, a paper-pusher, and a damn good one at that. Despite this boring profession, he had a general inclination towards problem-solving. "We could look for general signs of any Cardassian. I don't think there are many here, so we might find something," he suggested.

[Lt. Cmdr. Pierce Taggert / PO1 Jovireh Velal - Arkaria - Shuttle] "Hopefully you still remember your Ops training," Taggert replied to Jenkins, though his tone was light and without judgement. Judy wouldn't have assigned the young man to his team if he couldn't pull his weight. Pre-flight checks complete, the Commander gestured for Jenkins to take a seat at an empty console. "That's a good place to start. Go ahead and run the auxillary scans for Cardassian biosigns." Taggert doubted whomever helped du Toollame escape would be so careless, but it would be even more careless to not investigate all possibilities. With Velal and Hudson already running the primary scans, he lifted off and turned the shuttle towards the island. Hopefully they could regain the ground they had lost before the Arkarian authorities decided to call them in.

[ Snr. Director Phass Ke - Director's Office, Spaceport HQ] This was hardly the sort of distraction that Phass needed right now. Starfleet storming in and attempting to usurp control. Perhaps it would be easy enough to pacify this commander by overwhelming him with the level of scrutiny that they exercised. Whatever it took to keep the traffic levels from decreasing any further. Too much of a decline would not bode well for his position. He uploaded the scans and reports from the time frame that Quinn had asked for. This should be enough for him to see that they had everything well under control. Taking the PADD with him, he exited his office and began to make his way towards the waiting Starfleet officer.
[ Security Manager Tullin Trax - Control Center, Spaceport HQ] Trax stood just behind one of his subordinates, supervising a live search. It was being broadcast by mini-orbital cams that the search team took along with them. Everything seemed to be in order, and the crew of the ship was more than compliant. "Verify the manifest with a multispectral scan," he said. He paused when he noticed there were about twenty cubic meters of space unaccounted for. "There's a hidden compartment, shielded, approximately eight meters from control panel. Search it." He watched as the search commenced. What was discovered was nothing more than illegal contraband. "Confiscate and sanction," Trax ordered. "Then, send them on their way." Trax had just finished when he found himself approached by a Starfleet officer... a young one at that. Still, he was mannerable and introduced himself. Trax recognized him instantly as Bajoran. He then inquired about their security procedures, just as Trax had expected. "Of course, Ensign. If you'll walk with me," Trax said. He started to lead him around the arcs of subordinates busy at work. "From here we are monitoring every vessel that is either entering or leaving Arkaria. Each vessel transmits its manifest at which point we scan the vessel to verify. If there is more than a 0.6% variance in mass of listed cargo or crew, the vessel may be subject to a boarded search as per our trafficking laws." Trax continued with the presentation. "In the event that a search is resisted, there are over 400 orbiting satellites equipped with tractor beams and distortion pulses. It allows us to hold a vessel in place until the authorities can commence with an active search."As Trax stood there, he began to hope that this could actually be an exchange of sorts. "So, I hear this escaped prisoner is a... Cardassian? Is this investigation... personal for you?" Trax asked. His knowledge of intimate details where Bajorans and Cardassians wasn't vast. Though, it was possible this young man had little to no memory of the Occupation. Still, he was curious.
[ Kel Kallis - Level 6 (Sensors & Systems), Spaceport HQ] "No... nonono," Kel said. Her hands quickly danced across the keyboard as she scripted another subroutine quickly and turned her eyes to the screen once again. The bars that had spiked into a red region quickly receded to green. Kel exhaled in relief. The sensor grid was state of the art but maintenance had been postponed far too long. There were tiny bugs that were popping up everywhere. Nothing that was a major problem, but Kel felt like it was only a matter of time before some cascade failure occurred... in bulk. In theory, there were still another seven months before maintenance was mandated, but they were already eleven months past the recommended maintenance period. Kel exhaled. She had sent several presentations to Director Ke, showing how they could systematically preform the maintenance, bringing a few of the satellites offline at a time. It was something he kept putting on the backburner, insisting that it wasn't the right time. And now... well, taking any of them offline right now wasn't an option. Kel walked over to the KAINO and pulled one of the circuitry boards. Her eyes traced over the transparent board searching for a rupture, or anything that could catalyze any subspace static feedback. She picked up a magneton spanner and ran it along the length of the board. A thin green beam traced the path of the circuitry and the machine beeped, confirming that all was well. She started along a second circuit path when she heard someone speak. Kel looked up, impressed by the woman's sharp eye for recognizing the KAINO, but that wasn't all that she was impressed by. Kel swallowed and smiled. "Do you always ask questions you know the answer to?" Kel said sparing a moment for the woman. She had certainly earned that, given that half the people on this level would be lost without the trouble-shooter program she had scripted. "How can I help you... Kaya was it?"

[Ensign Enola - Akrath Island prison] Enola looked to the wall and listened to the lieutenant, but was unable to respond before Sleebaggo interjected. After he finished speaking, Enola pursed her lips. The behavior of her supervisor was complex and obviously not one of restraint. She wondered if he had run a department before and if this was a rehearsed act. Or it was simply the initial arrogance that probably comes with anyone who heads a department for the first time.
When the captain butted in and gave new orders, she set course for the jail cells before her eyes fell on the captain and the woman who was with her. She heard only a fraction of the conversation, but her ears successfully filtered out the words "Do as" and "Ensign Enola." It probably looked like she was getting help with her task ... From a ... Journalist? Well, better than nothing.
She raised her hand and waved in her direction so the woman would know where to go. Although it was hard to miss the big hole in the wall.

{Quotes} [ LT Joshua Niles - Cabin 10 -> Akrath Island prison ]With the teams neatly divided, and unfortunately Sleebaggo deciding to attach himself to the Captain rather than, say, finding himself a nice quiet hole in which to collate and deconflict information. That hole in the wall immediately suggests 'no', but given who and what we're dealing with here I wouldn't be surprised if that was just to create a false trail either." [LCDR Tony Sleebaggo - Akrath Island]
One should have far more evidence to off of before making such an insinuation, certainly more evidence than looking at a blast pattern for twenty seconds." [Capt.

Journalist? Well, better than nothing.
She raised her hand and waved in her direction so the woman would know where to go. Although it was hard to miss the big hole in the wall. [Charlie Fox - Detention Centre, Akrath Island]When Josh told her he had to work and wandered off, Charlie merely shrugged a shoulder. She was used to being ignored, that was part of the job sometimes, but what she wasn't used to was the way this Sleebaggo character was looking at her. He didn't even know her. Josh at least had bought her dinner once; that kind of won him some leeway, but this little troll, he hadn't earned anything but her ire. "Excuse you," she interjected tartly, suddenly wondering where Matthew was, despite her anger at him, "Nobody lets me do anything. This whole perimeter was unmanned and I walked right on in, it had nothing to do with Josh."She was almost relieved when Eastman approached her, such was the extent of her irritation at all this wiener waving the two men were engaging in. Her eyes narrowed of their own accord as she met the Captain's gaze; she couldn't help that, nor the frown lines that sprung up between her brows. "Alright," she acquiesced after only the briefest of pauses. Charlie knew a good deal when she saw one, and even though it was being offered by an enemy, she wasn't planning to cut her nose off to spite her face. Not this time, anyway. She was also keenly aware that she was getting the favours, not Eastman, but she didn't mention it. If it was obvious to Charlie, the recipient, then it was obvious to she who gave it. Catching the Ensign's movement, she began to trudge toward her, Olsen hovering alongside. "Charlie Fox, Federation News Network," she introduced herself, then nodded toward the big hole. "After you." Once she'd stepped inside, she paused for a moment just beyond the threshold to take a look around. The request had been to speak with the other inmates, but it was no harm to get her bearings for a moment. "Anyone home?" She called out, for as much any security personnel's benefit as any other potential criminals, who might be crouched in a dark corner somewhere, ready to grab her and use her as a shield to facilitate escape. A shuffling sound down the hallway, beyond Du Toollamé's forcefield boundary, caught her attention. "I think there's one next door," she muttered to Enola, and then stepped closer. "Hello?" She called, then stopped walking when she caught sight of the escaped Cardassian's one-time neighbour. "Tough break that they only made a hole big enough for the Cardy, huh?"

[NPC - Kalda Kark - Akrath Island]Kalda looked up from the floor, where his gaze had been fixed, to the two offworld visitors. His cell was dimly lit, small, sparsely furnished, and yet exactly how he liked it. He stared right into the human one's eyes. "I don't mind," he asserted, in a raspy voice. "It makes things interesting; doesn't get any more interesting than the most unscrupulous Arkarians stepping over each other. The Xanbu Town Strangler[fn]Arkarian serial killer[/fn] got trampled to death." This was what Kalda lived for - watching people, observing them, noting their behaviors, studying them. He turned his piercing gaze to the Vulcan. "The Cardie got away, didn't he?" he growled.
