[Ensign Enola - Arkath Island, Cells]
At the compliment about her name, Enola watched with a motionless expression instead of rolling her eyes. Even though in normal situations she had absolutely no more problems keeping her emotions under absolute control (even if this current situation could not be called "normal"), this prisoner - who shortly thereafter introduced himself as Kaldar Kark - stimulated her Romulan genes more than three weeks of meditation deprivation ever could. The half-Vulcan finally stirred a bit and made a postural adjustment while waiting for an answer to her question. The information Kaldar had (or rather, was willing to give without emphasis) was fairly factual. Or maybe Kaldar actually didn't know more, because the Gul had pulled himself together for once. "Well, I think I have to ask you very clearly now. How did his escape proceed, step by step? Surely you have noticed something, be it only a bang. Or were you not in your cell during the time he escaped?" she asked freely. Of course, Enola would have been very naive if she thought he would answer her question with the one hundred percent truth. Still, it was probably better not to skirt around the heart of the matter.

[NPC - Kalda Kark - Akrath Island]"Enola, such a pleasant name," Kalda rasped. "And Charlie Fox. Fox, that's a Terran animal."As a student of people, Kalda studied cultures too. "I am Kalda Kark, the Slicer of Sdorktin. Pleasure to meet you."The Slicer was the most prodigious serial killer of the 40s. He had kidnapped, tortured, and killed dozens of Arkarians, of all different origins and walks of life, and when apprehended, had pleaded guilty and accepted his life sentence without hesitation. He could study all sorts of people in jail, without his trusty knife. "Du Toollamé's story could be fascinating, if you tell it correctly. He was convinced that he had powerful friends who would save him. We never found out who, but there's a hole in the wall that implies they exist." [Ensign Enola - Arkath Island, Cells]

Being a fan of words herself, it had been playing on her mind since Captain Eastman had spoken the Intelligence Operative's name. Charlie lowered herself to the dusty ground once the prisoner had identified himself. Slicer. A serial killer, obviously, and of some renown on Arkaria it seemed. She knew nothing of him herself, but that only served to increase her morbid curiosity. She sat lotus-style on the ground; appearing as though she was settling in for an extended exchange. Had there been no barrier between them she may not have been quite so quick to make herself a sitting duck. "Your name has a certain something to it, too."She considered his opinion about Du Toollamé's story, and his chatter about powerful friends. "The footage I took of him on Kerelia - that's the planet where he had the other Cardy murdered - wasn't flattering by Federation standards, but it was copied and used as part of his political campaign. I'm told to great success." Her eyes flickered toward the cell next to Kark's. "Perhaps he had become valuable to these fancy friends of his."Charlie wasn't sure that Enola's very direct manner and questions would be effective. This was a convicted man; bound to spend the rest of his life in a cage. He wanted to know them, wanted their knowledge, and from that she thought a quid pro quo would be sparked. It was how she got something useable from almost every interview she'd ever done. Criminal, celebrity, politician - they were all the same when it came down to the court of public opinion. She leaned back and waited, her hands resting on her knees.

With another stiff posture, Enola nodded. What this could mean now, one could only speculate, especially since her facial expression was still rigid and stoic. On the one hand it could mean that he had satisfied her with his answer, on the other hand ... she still seemed dissatisfied. In reality, his answer had helped her at least a little, even if it wasn't what she wanted to hear right now. An answer to her question would have been a little better, but anything that helped, helped. And the fact that the Gul's party (perhaps ex-Gul would fit better) was a right-wing radical group might be of some use. Realizing that she was the only one in the room who really had a stiff posture, the half-Vulcan also sat down on the floor and finally hit the floor with a thud. She wasn't in the mood to chat about God and the world, but apparently the other two didn't share her opinion. But no matter. Then she turned to Charlie. "My name means Alone backwards, that's right, however it came about more through a dispute between my parents. My father wanted to call me T'Nola in the traditional Vulcan way, my mother thought the Romulan name Enarrala was more appropriate." Without further gesture or facial expression, she silently let her gaze roam the room.

[LTJG Chloe Hudson - Shuttle]
Chloe was momentarily excited when Jenkins revealed he'd found someone's biosigns nearby in the mountains, though that excitement quickly faded. "It's not Du Toollame. Might still be worth checking out though, sir?" she suggested. [Lt. Cmdr. Pierce Taggert / PO1 Jovireh Velal - Arkaria - Shuttle] Taggert grinned at the younger man's hesitant repsonse. It wasn't uncommon for Judy to have more confidence in her people than they had in themselves. At the mention of a single life sign in the mountains, he turned the shuttle towards it. "It's worth checking out. Cardassian?" He asked for clarification, his attention on piloting. The last thing they needed was any surprises with their first suspect. Jovireh remained quiet, her attention on her own console. She was running the scans continuously, but so far there were no disturbances or anomalies in the terrain they passed. [NPC - PO2 Roland L. Jenkins - Shuttle]"Cardie, yes sir. Just the one," Jenkins confirmed, and he wasn't looking forward to meeting the Cardie in question. He hadn't had very good experiences with them in the past. [NPC - Kil Ted - Somewhere in the Mountains]The tall, burly Cardassian known as Kil Ted sat by a campfire, atop a snow-capped mountain, with a variety of beacons and other equipment. His benefactors had warned that he'd be arrested, but promised they'd spring him right out. All he had to do was sit tight.

[LTJG Chloe Hudson - Shuttle]"He's sitting around some technology, he doesn't seem to simply be lost," Chloe pointed out after scanning the surroundings.
Tag: Judith Eastman , Jovireh Velal [Lt. Cmdr Pierce Taggert / PO1 Jovireh Velal - Arkarian Mountains - Shuttle] "One Cardassian, Mr. Jenkins." Taggert corrected the name gently. "Just because they aren't members of the Federation, doesn't give us the right to treat them with any less respect." After all, most species in the galaxy had a violent history, including Humans. Disrespect based on species was a personal pet peeve of his. "Hudson and Velal, I'll let you head up the interrogation," he continued more decisively. Seeing the other Petty Officer stiffen from the corner of his eye, he glanced over with a reassuring smile. "Don't worry, I'll be right there to help if you need it. Does any of that technology look like weapons or explosives?" It wouldn't do for them to blindly approach a suspect on a suicide run. Finding a decent landing zone not far from the lifesign, he set the shuttle down and turned towards his team. "Everyone gear up."Jovireh had been caught off guard by the order to lead the interrogation. At least she would have Lt. Hudson with her, and she assumed the other woman had a bit more of an idea what questions to ask. Once the shuttle landed, she rose from her seat and moved to the weapons locker, using her thumbprint to open it. Sliding one phaser pistol into the holster on her hip, she handed the others out to the other members of her team without a word. The nerves were steadily rising, constricting her throat, but she did her best not to show it. They had a job to do... and she'd be doing it the same whether or not the Commander was there with them. That was easier thought than felt, though.

[NPC - PO2 Roland L. Jenkins - Shuttle]"Yes, Sir," Jenkins accepted the correction, though he didn't take it to heart. He had little love for the Cardassian people, after his wartime experiences, and Judy indulged the use of all manner of shorthand inside her office, but Roland would indulge the senior officer here now. "No explosives, but he's armed. Most of the stuff is comms equipment, all sorts of different issue."[NPC - Kil Ted - Mountains]Although he was armed, Kil Ted greeted the Starfleeters with his arms behind his head, surrendering. The equipment outside included four prominent makes: Federation, Cardassian, Dominion surplus from the war, and Caldonian.

{Quoted Posts} [ Ensign Rin Zakir - Control Center, Spaceport HQ] Zak observed the Arkarians at work, in what appeared to be a run of the mill border check on an incoming vessel. What followed was also suitably well co ordinated, their scans quickly identifying a shielded chamber that was just as quickly searched and the illegal contraband within dealt with. It sure seemed like they knew what they were doing up here, but he couldn't take that at face value. Thankfully, it seemed as if the man was amiable enough to tolerate his presence, as well as initial questioning. He motioned him to follow, which he did, while listening intently to what was essentially a guided tour of the facility. On paper, it seemed as though they had everything figured out, with no fewer than four hundred orbiting satellites equipped with tractor beams to hold any ship whose crew chose not to co operate. It was all very impressive, but there was a saying about the best laid plans. "Sounds like on a good day, you've got everything worked out", he responded with a nod. Would today be a good day? So far, a supposedly secure facility had managed to lose a high profile criminal, so he suspected that things were hardly going to get better. Not if they let things lie, anyhow. "I must say, I'm particularly impressed that you seem to have so many defences in place. Would it be possible to take a look at some of the schematics?", he asked while making sure he kept things friendly. Hopefully if he sounded enthusiastic enough, they would be happier for him to do just that. While he was no engineer, but he did have tactical training and he had heard of scenarios where even the most state of the art equipment had been hacked or otherwise tampered with. Maybe Som could take a look too, from her own departments perspective. "By the way, how is the screening process on the inside? You know, checking that employees are actually themselves and not bringing in anything they shouldn't? he had a feeling that the man might balk at such a possibility, but plenty of crimes had been committed from the inside. Trust was important, but so was making sure that people were who they claimed to be. There was the inevitable question, he resisting groaning aloud while keeping his expression neutral. He supposed that it was a good one to ask though, given the history between his people and Du Tollame's, as it was entirely possible that he would be the sort to let personal feelings get in the way of what had to be done. He wasn't, at least he hoped to the prophets that he wasn't, but he knew many if people were. "I imagine that all of us here are taking a security breech of this magnitude very personally", he answered diplomatically before changing tac slightly. "If you mean what I think you do though, I can assure you that just because I have a wrinkly nose and a pretty earring, doesn't mean I'll be treating the fugitive any differently to anyone else", he added with a small smile. That should be enough for Trax to get the message, while letting him know that there were no hard feelings. It was a fair enough query, after all. Despite the small white lie, as of course the cardies were a slippery bunch with photographic memories, and needed to be handled accordingly. [ CPO Kaya Som | Level 6 - Sensors & Systems ]Kaya couldn't help but smile as the whole tone of the mission seemed to warm up. It would be really helpful to not be immediately faced with the same territorial hackles Kaya would certainly have should their situation be reversed. She approached to have a look at what Kel was doing with the very fancy sensor management set-up, resisting the urge to indulge her curiosity. Instead, she probably out to get to work. Every minute, the fugitive could very well be getting further away. "Oh, there's been a prison break," Kaya said with a girly shrug. "Some of our crew were to testify at this murder trial, but the guy blew a hole in a wall we're all trying to find him." The Trill engineer certainly didn't seem very bothered by the whole drama. She leaned on the console and tucked some hair behind her ear. "We think he might've snuck off-planet and Director Ke said I should bother you about the sensor net." [Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Control Center, Spaceport HQ] Director Ke had returned with the reports that Isaiah had asked for. The science officer had procured a desk and was scrutinizing the reports that Ke had given him. The director had taken advantage of the moment to excuse himself before Quinn could ask him for something more. He skimmed through everything looking for anything that stood out, but thus far this was like sifting through a needle in a haystack. The science officer reached up and tapped his comm badge. =A= "Quinn to S'Riia," =A= he said as the channel opened. =A= "I need you to monitor comm traffic at this location. There is a Director Phass Ke who oversees the facility. I need to know everyone that he's talking to. Let me know the minute you have something. Quinn out." =A= He then turned his eyes back to the reports, looking for that one needle to stand out amongst the rest of the hay.
[ Security Manager Tullin Trax - Control Center, Spaceport HQ] "Of course," Trax said. He moved towards a console and brought up the schematics for the ensign to examine. He had nothing to hide. In fact, he was rather proud of the systems they had in place. "I would like to point out that illegal trafficking has been reduced by nearly 84% since the launch of these latest systems."The ensign then turned his curiosities towards their screening process to make certain that employees were exactly whom they said they were. "I can assure you that all employees are first cleared through a very arduous background check," he began. "As for accessing their stations, we only trust biometric verifications: retinal scans, voice verification, as well as genetic verification. Samples are obtained when employees seek to access their stationed floor. The system will not grant them access unless their identity is confirmed with sixteen identifiable markers. It's why you and your team had to be cleared to transport in rather than simply walk through the front door." "As for bringing in foreign items," Trax continued, "such items are cleared through rigorous screening upon entering the building." Trax stood there, wondering if he had appeased all of the ensign's inquiries. As he addressed Trax's question, the security manager nodded. "Understood. I was simply curious if any personal vendettas would endanger the lives of any of my personnel. Though, I'm pleased to say that I don't believe that will be the case... at least where you're concerned."
[ Kel Kallis - Level 6 (Sensors & Systems), Spaceport HQ] Kel listened as Kaya explained with a great deal more detail than had been shared with her, exactly what had been going on. "He would," Kel said and sighed. "Not that I don't appreciate the company. It's just... Director Ke has a singular focus... our efficiency rating. It's why he's delayed maintenance on these systems for months." Kel glanced over at one of the display panels and motioned for Kaya to come closer. "The system is state of the art, don't get me wrong," she said. "But there are a few... kinks. Kinks that I spend about nineteen hours a day de-kinking. And if I had to guess about this fugitive... I'd still wager they hadn't escaped." Though as Kel stood there, a single thought came to mind. "Unless...."Kel typed up a few buttons on the console and isolated a particular piece of the grid. "There's... one intermittent hole here, over the southern continent," she told Kaya. "Though this is a non-commercial area, and there's no traffic there. The hole randomly appears, but it's only there for 2.6 seconds. That's how long it takes for the system to reinitialize the grid. Though... no one knows about that malfunction. I only told Security Manager Trax and Director Ke about it. And... I doubt anyone would be able to get a ship through that quickly. The timing is just... too erratic."

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Akrath Island]Given the circumstances, Judy could at least take pleasure in the fact that everyone - Charlie Fox included - was doing what she wanted them to. She stood back, examining her correspondence from various branches of the Arkarian government, as they worked, until Niles approached her. "Thank you, Lieutenant."She thought about the Nausicaan. That was an interesting development. "Lieutenant, try to bag some element of the Nausicaan's remains to send to Arkaria's national forensic labs. We can get a conclusive ID through them."Burial practices were likely out of the question, given the conditions. "Mabel, check the inmate database for Nausicaans.""Yes, ma'am."With that, Judy turned her attention to Sleebaggo. "Commander, you got anything?" she called out. [LCDR Tony Sleebaggo - Arkath Island]"There appears to be three prints," Sleebaggo told the Captain after having had a look at the prints. "A small man, probably our missing Cardassian, and two with some sort of heavy boots. They went towards the sea." It wasn't much to go on, and far below Sleebaggo's skills or pay grade. Still, he was a diligent worker and did his job. [ LT Joshua Niles - Akrath Island prison ]"Aye, Captain." Getting the biological remains bagged and tagged, at least, would not require much in the way of hands-on work for him. Starfleet transporters were considered good enough for forensics work, and there were always options to get things in stasis before they would break down too much. And given he had catalogued the remains in his sweep and included its coordinates, that meant he could have them taken directly to a secure container, to be forwarded as the Captain decreed. =A= "Niles to Mac. I'm sending you some coordinates and some additional information. Beam everything in a thirty centimeter radius around the indicated spot directly into a stasis container, and forward it to the Arkarian national forensics lab, with Captain Eastman's compliments."=A= As he spoke, he sent up the coordinates, as well as a brief explanation of the findings, and before long an acknowledgement came from orbit and the transporter's distinctive sound was heard, followed by the clatter of debris moving to fill the void that had been left. And then, his tricorder chimed again just as Sleebaggo was giving his own very thin, very incomplete report. Apparently, he had lacked the initiative to follow the tracks all right... However, first he needed to address the chime, and the results drew a frown from him. "And I have something about the device used to blow the wall. No immediately distinctive chemical or energy signatures, and nothing I scanned indicates anything proprietary to any government or major manufacturer. That thing was homemade using off-the-shelf materials, by someone who knew what they were doing, and I have no way to prove if the maker and the user are the same person."With the matter of the bomb addressed, now he could ask the oh-so-superior Intelligence Officer if he knew anything more. "Sir, did the tracks lead to anything that would indicate how the ones who made them reached and departed the island?"Oh, that question he had couched in the most respectful manner he could. After all, he did outrank him... and he had to at least respect the pips even if he was finding it extremely unlikely he could respect the man wearing them...

Without further gesture or facial expression, she silently let her gaze roam the room. [Charlie Fox - Cells, Akrath Island]Charlie was very impressed by the extent of this prisoner's knowledge of the Cardassian political situation. She supposed he had a lot of time there by himself to keep abreast of current events across the quadrant. She wondered if he was allowed to watch the FNN. She raised a hand and recalled Olsen, who had been recording the entire time. He came to a stop at her shoulder, between her and Enola, who had joined her on the floor. That had surprised Charlie, but at the same time she was pleased that they were taking a more relaxed, informal approach to this interview. So much so, the ensign shared the origin of her name. Charlie blinked rapidly at the change of subject, but followed along. After a few moments she nodded. "A good compromise." That sounded something suitably Vulcan to say. "I was named after the rescue team that found me when I was a kid. Charlie Team. The Fox part came later." She looked back at the forthcoming prisoner. "As you rightly pointed out - Terran animal. Known for its wiles and opportunism."Speaking of wiles... "If you were Lages, and partial to some punditry, who do you think you'd finger as being powerful or resourceful enough in the Cardassian cabinet to pull off a job like this?" If Du Toollamé mentioned any of those names during his inane chattering next door, then they might be on to a winner.

[NPC - Kalda Kark - Akrath Island]Kalda followed along with the topic of names. It was an interesting one, though the matter of spelling "Enola" took the former serial killer a brief time to work out in his head. Without commenting on his own name, Kalda returned to the subject at hand. "No one in the new government has this kind of brains. The Nats[fn]National Strength League of Cardassia - a prominent political party[/fn], where most of the the military types, the Obsidian Order types, are, are going into Opposition. I'd look outside of Cardassia for this.""I'd also think about how Du Toollamé came to occupy the weakest section of wall in cell block R."Kalda was hinting at a gap in the building's seismic bracing, which corresponded to the Gul's cell.

[LTJG Chloe Hudson - Somewhere in the Mountains]
Chloe nodded confidently as the Commander gave her the directive to lead the interrogation. She'd been involved in a few, led a couple herself even, though this was potentially of more importance than she'd taken the lead on before. Nevertheless, she felt confident in her abilities. Matthew had taught her well. As she donned the standard issue Starfleet winter field coat, she took a phaser from Velal before readying herself to transport to the surface.
As she materialised with the others, she came face to face with the Cardassian who appeared to be armed, though was already surrendering. Phaser raised, she called out to him, "Keep still! Velal, take his weapon," she ordered, keeping her own weapon trained on him closely. "Jenkins, check out that equipment," she said without taking her eyes off the Cardassian. "Who are you? What are you doing here?" she asked figuring the basics was as good a place as ever to start, though she doubted she'd get a straight honest answer.

[Ensign Rin Zakir - Control Center, Spaceport HQ]
Zak once again followed on as Trax seemed more than happy to show off just what their systems were capable of. An eighty four per cent decrease in illegal trafficking was certainly impressive, but there was always a chance that something could slip through the cracks. Even if the cracks in this case seemed to be minuscule.
At least he didn't seem too offended about having been questioned on the screening process. Some of the biggest crimes in history had begun on the inside, though it wasn't an idea he would be keen to entertain when it came to his own colleagues. Again though, they seemed to have everything covered there too. He wanted to take them at their word, but they had to be thorough in this investigation. Slipping up now would do his future career no good either, on a more personal note.
Speaking of personal, the bajoran nodded as the security manager explained his reasoning behind his earlier enquiry.
"Understandable, only sensible to make sure I'm not gonna freak out at the first sign of a cardassian.", he responded, making sure to use the race's actual name. Better to keep up appearances and maintain a sense of professionalism, after all.
"Anyhow, seems like you've got everything in hand, in theory. Mind if I stick around a little while? I'll make sure to stay away from any big red buttons", he then asked, again attempting to keep things professional but light hearted enough to hopefully build a positive rapport. Besides, he wanted to report that he had seen them in action, while of course keeping check of where his phaser was. Prophets, when had he gotten so paranoid?
The other thing to consider would be just how things worked around here, their dealings with the top and all. He could try and throw it into casual conversation, he supposed.
"Efficiency is definitely the word of the day here, I'm guessing this is where most of the focus from the top ends up?", he asked. Not that he had any reason to doubt that the rest of the place was just as high tech and whatever.

Tag: Judith Eastman , Jovireh Velal [Lt. Cmdr Pierce Taggert / PO1 Jovireh Velal - Arkarian Mountains - Shuttle] Upon hearing Jenkins' report about the Cardassian being armed, Jovireh already had her phaser drawn when they transported to the area. Her posture stiffened with suspicion when she saw the man standing with his hands behind his head. His immediate surrender, while still being armed, had the opposite affect from putting her at ease. At Chloe's order, she approached cautiously until she was standing behind him. Reaching out with her free hand, and keeping her phaser trained at his back, she grabbed the weapons from his belt and tossed them off to the side - closer to the team than the suspect, but far enough away no one would get hurt if they were rigged. Once making sure she had thoroughly disarmed him, she stepped back around in front of him, but kept out of his reach. They currently had no sufficient reason to take him into custody, which gave her even more reason not to trust him. Taggert scowled as he looked at the equipment, and the insignias printed on them. Any one of them would be cause for suspicion, but all these together? He tapped his com badge. =A="Taggert to Mac. Get a lock on our position. We've got some suspicious technology down that will need to be investigated as possible evidence once we've cleared the scene."=A= He wasn't about to call down a team of scientists and engineers until he knew more about what - and who - they were dealing with. His attention turned back to the man that Lt. Hudson and PO Velal had confronted and disarmed, listening to the conversation.

Just beacons, signal amplifiers, a few jammers, and a site-to-site transporter."Kil Ted, of course, knew all this, and knew that it would be found out. "What do I get by talking?" he asked, in a baritone voice.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD, Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen & Minister Palkor - Akrath Island]Josh had come to an awfully direct conclusion, that because their scans hadn't found the signature of a known manufacturer, that meant there was no such manufacturer involved. It was sloppy, and yet for now, Judy didn't address it head-on. She was about to turn her attention to Sleebaggo, but then, she got a ping on her PADD. "Gentlemen, I have to take a brief call. If you need anything, send Mabel my way," she instructed, and walked away. Only moments later, a group of three Arkarians approached, two bodyguards and one senior politician. "Are you Eastman's people?" minister Palkor, the minister of the Interior, asked. Mabel, meanwhile, got the report that there were no Nausicaan prisoners here, but figured this guy was a bigwig and she should keep quiet.
