[ Left Ear - Holodeck 2] Oh, do I have to move? Left Ear thought as the environment shifted and her back was blasted with cool air. The Sivaoan blinked blearily up at the captain and rolled to her side, then sat up. Smacking her dry tongue against the roof of her mouth, Left Ear replied, slightly hoarsely, I tried at first because I thought I was supposed to, but when I realized that I never got any closer, I just tried to find a pace I could keep up. I didn't do very well with that, either.' Now that she could breathe in the cooler air, Left Ear slowly got to her feet, shaking holographic sand out of her fur. Tag Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Holodeck 2]Judy smiled wryly, basking in the teachable moment she had created. "Computer, water," she ordered for the seemingly parched cadet, before bringing it home. "He was a distraction. They crop up all the time, and you have to learn to screen them," she explained. "You have to learn to focus on the job, even if - as it was here - it's a very menial task."

[ Left Ear - Holodeck 2] Left Ear accepted the water gratefully, taking a couple of sips as Judy explained the simulation. ' It's hard to know, though, without testing the theory. But I know there's not always time. Sometimes you have to just make a decision and stick with it. I've had to do that before, with healing.' The Sivaoan coughed and took another drink of water. ' I have a feeling there's a lot more physical training in my future,' she said wryly. Tag Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Holodeck 2]"Well, it's a judgement call, like so very much of what we do," Judy said. She chuckled at the young woman's next question. "There will be plenty of exercise, I'll tell you that."She clasped her hands behind her back. "In fact, we will now be working on Starfleet protocol, and when you get something wrong, you'll have to drop down and do five push-ups. That's Starfleet's time-honored way of making sure you get it all drilled into your head," Judy explained, though with a tone that implied she didn't care for the system.

[ Left Ear - Holodeck 2] Left Ear's whiskers twitched slightly at that bit of information. She thought about saying that that seemed like a more effective means of 'drilling' for someone who wasn't in possession of an eidetic memory but restrained herself. She would make mistakes, certainly, just not the same ones more than once. She supposed it was the same reasoning for getting her out of bed at a ridiculous hour, but as a healer, that wasn't really new to her. It seemed like a lot of cadet training was just meant to make one uncomfortable. ' What's next,' Left Ear asked, a little more alert now that she'd had a few minutes to rest. Tag Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Holodeck 2]After giving Left Ear her time, Judy returned to the role of teacher. Having previously sat at her desk in the simulated classroom, she now walked into the middle of the room. "Here is a pop quiz. Let's see how much of it you get right," she announced, handing the young woman a PADD, with a number of questions on it. "Let's see how well you do."

[ Left Ear - Holodeck 2] Left Ear accepted the PADD and sat in a nearby desk, blowing out a slow breath. Her heart rate had calmed after her run, but it kicked up again. This sort of formal test-taking was new to her; she was accustomed to oral questions and answers occurring naturally in the course of her apprenticeship. But she could do this. Maybe... The bane of her existence, questions about names. She was very careful and had asked a lot of questions about how to address various people on the station, but these were some circumstances she'd never encountered. She went with a safe answer on the first question. Left Ear hemmed and hawed for several minutes, unsatisfied with some of her responses, but unsure how she could make them better. Finally, she raised her head, and lifted the PADD slightly in Judy's direction with a questioning look. Tag Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Holodeck 2]Judy, reading glasses low on her nose, approached Left Ear when the young woman appeared to be done. She took up the PADD, and silently reviewed the answers, pacing across the room, until, finally, she had decided how to grade it. "4 out of 5," she announced, after setting the PADD on her pupil's desk. "Now, what that means is not that you got one question wrong, but that you got two questions half-right," she explained, gesticulating with her readers. "On question 4, not all medical officers can relieve me of duty - only the CMO, or acting CMO, has that power - so that's a half-point off. And on question 5, you didn't answer all parts of the question, so that's another half."Left Ear had gotten at what she presumably thought was the heart of the question, but that wasn't enough; one had to be thorough.

[ Left Ear - Holodeck 2] Left Ear waited nervously while Judy looked over her responses, the tip of her tail was the only part of her that moved, twitching slightly back and forth. When the captain returned the PADD, the Sivaoan wrinkled her nose slightly, unhappy with the results. Her whiksers twitched as Judy explained. Left Ear understood why the fourth question wasn't quite correct; but to her understanding, she had addressed all parts of the question, though perhaps more by implication than being stated outright. She wondered whether she should contest it, but decided that she'd better not. There may come a time when she'd have to defend her own understanding of an order, but at this point, it seemed relatively benign. ' I understand, Captain' Left Ear said. A jaw-cracking yawn suddenly overtook her, her hand inadequate to cover her sharp teeth and her tongue, which extended and curled. Tag Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Holodeck 2]Judy was naturally predisposed to have Left Ear redo the fifth question, but the yawn sealed it in. "In Starfleet, Cadet, when you get something wrong, you often have a chance to redo it, so I'm going to give you that chance," she said. "Would you like to redo question 5?"This was a trick - the redoing was seemingly optional, but only one option was correct.

[ Left Ear - Holodeck 2] Left Ear did a slow blink. Her energy was fading quickly. But the policy sounded like how things were done with Sivaoan internships. Of course, sometimes it wasn't possible to redo something you messed up. ' Yes, Captain. Thank you,' she answered, taking back the PADD. She stared at the question and tried to figure out how to answer the question more thoroughly. Finally, she said, ' Captain, before I do this, may I ask for clarification? I thought the question referred to a particular type of salute, but since I didn't know exactly what, that's why my answer was more general. Can you show me what sort of salute you mean?' Oops, that sounded like she was making an excuse, which was not her intent. Tag Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Holodeck 2]Though she noted her pupil's tiredness, Judy didn't let up. "Well, you've almost found the answer, Cadet. You see, if you don't know what type of salute I'm referring to, then you can't perform it, can you?" she asked rhetorically. "And oftentimes, in your career, you will find that you haven't been given enough information to carry out an order, just like with this question. When that happens, you want to ask for clarification right away."She set her reading glasses on her forehead, out of the way. "But that'll be enough for one day. We'll pick up your next lesson on Wednesday."

[ Left Ear - Holodeck 2] Left Ear's mouth popped open. It had been a...trick question? Would she ever understand everything she needed to? They were done. Were they done? What was the leave-taking protocol? Left Ear's sleep deprived brain couldn't call it up. She wasn't used to that. Sivaoans didn't forget things! Was something wrong with her? ' I'm so- Thank you, Captain,' she finally blurted, pulling herself into some semblance of attention. That part she remembered well enough. Tag Judith Eastman

1 week later - 2000 hours[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Holodeck 1]After completing the protocol unit, they were now at the history unit, which Judy thought to structure as an exploration through different stations in Federation history - good and bad. Judy stood at the entrance to the holodeck, this time in a crisp, black skirt-suit with a light-blue button-up. Despite acting as Left Ear's Starfleet instructor, Judy had not conducted any lessons in uniform yet, and there was a good reason for this. "Good evening, Cadet. Today, we're going to visit a number of moments in Federation history, as well as some moments in ancient Earth history. These moments each have something important for you to learn."

[ Left Ear - Holodeck 1] Left Ear was seeing more of the holodecks than she'd ever had any desire to before. She'd donned her cadet's harness again before joining Captain Eastman again for her late evening lesson. She was excited about this particular unit. Left Ear had learned a little bit about the histories of some planets and had been fascinated to learn that some other species had very similar events to her own people, like the Vulcans and Romulans. With the continued feeling of guilt that her own people harbored, as well as the shame of the Eeiaouans that they have yet to overcome, Left Ear was keenly aware of the importance of remembering history. ' Hello, Captain. I'm ready!' Her voice held the energy of youth despite having worked a full shift in the infirmary and spending several hours reading Academy texts. Tag Judith Eastman
