[Deck 26 — Planetary Sciences Lab]
It was not something he was particularly interested in broadcasting from one lab to another, particularly in the event that he was wrong about the thing he thought that maybe he’d observed on the planet. There was a lot of doubt in what he had to say, and even more in how to say it. The ranking officer on duty hadn’t been much help in that area when Ic had approached them to address the observation. He’d just been directed to bring it up with the meteorologists upstairs. That could mean one of two things: he was completely off base and just being excitable, or he’d found something significant, just in someone else’s specialty.
Either way, the nerves of it were scalding, and his enthusiasm for the phenomenon lingered somewhere in the
PADD in hand, Ic stepped into the Planetary Sciences lab, ready (and not ready at all) to discuss with a bunch of geologists the interaction between a what seemed to be a graviton storm on Kerelia and the readings on his chronometer probe. He’d decided in the turbolift that he was just going to ask the first person he saw, so that was exactly what he did. He also reminded himself not to say “I found a cool thing, wanna see”, so he cleared his throat—
“‘Scuse me,” he addressed the lucky Trill, “I found a cool thing, wanna see?”
—aaaand he did that, too. Great!
He held out the PADD.

[Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - Front Ear - Deck 26 Labs]Cerjess was digging around his desk, looking for the PADD he'd been going through before leaving for lunch. No, not that one... not that one, either... oh hey, he'd been looking for this one, but not now... So focused he was that he hadn't even noticed someone approach him until they cleared their throat. Jumping slightly, clearly startled, he dropped the stack of PADDs he'd been holding. They scattered across the desk and to the floor, and for a moment he simply stared at them. He'd pick them up in a moment. Taking a deep breath to try and compose himself, the Trill diverted his gaze back to the young Ensign that had spoken. And offered to show him a cool thing he'd found. Well, that was certainly a phrase every scientist secretly loved to hear. Or at least, one that this scientist secretly loved to hear. "What'd you find?" He asked with a grin, reaching out for the PADD that was offered to him. He didn't look at it yet, giving the other scientist the opportunity to explain his discovery. Why take all the excitement away by simply reading about it, when he could be told about it? Ignoring the mess he'd made only moments before, he leaned back against the edge of his desk and motioned for the Ensign to make himself comfortable... Wherever he could find the space to.

[Deck 26 Labs, Front Ear] When an elaborate setting of dominoes fell on purpose, that was art. When they did so on accident, that was catastrophe. Intention being the division between the two, the question was therefore whether it mattered what one meant when such an event occurred. One thing was certain, either way: it was very difficult to stop. The foolish and the brave tried anyway; the difference in that was fear. And he'd just been asked to present his findings, by someone just as jazzed as he. "Sshhoot, I'm sorry, sir," the fool sighed, though the tone of deep apology he intended arrived a little stilted in his attempt to control the impulse to swear. The impulse less controlled was that to help. He knelt down to collect what he could of the PADDs, despite the general unhelpfulness that was one hand clutching his own data in his littlest two fingers. He dropped it twice in the effort anyway. "But, you know how we sent down a chronometer to check out that anomalous reading from the surface the other day? W e l l, I think there seems to be a storm on the planet that's generating gravitons and altering the quantum temporal measures in the probe. Is that... within the realm of Kerelia's weather, or—?"—is my probe broken?

[Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - Front Ear - Deck 26 Labs]"Hey, don't worry abou-" The Ensign was already kneeling down the pick up the scattered pads. So halfway through his reassurance, Cerjess adjusted and held out his hand to take the delicately gathered stack and set them on the desk. "-t calling me 'sir'. It apparently goes to my head." He finished flatly. His brow furrowed slightly at the explanation... Something about a storm, and a probe, and graviton temporal what? That sounded well beyond his realm of expertise, but he was familiar with the weather patterns on Kerelia. Or at least, the patterns they'd been able to track so far. He glanced down at the PADD the Ensign had handed him, hoping that reading the information would make it make a little more sense. No luck yet. "Kerelia does have an abnormal weather system... Especially on the coast near the colony. Storms start small, but gather in size and intensity very swiftly, and disappear just as quick. Makes it difficult to get an accurate forecast." Did that have something to do with the quantum-whatevers? Or did he just make it obvious he knew nothing about what the other scientist was saying?

[Deck 26 Labs, Front Ear] The smile born of his excitement dimmed in a flow of sensations, an unburnished bronze, the bruise of purple. The brightness of the Betazoid’s eyes, however, did not so much as flicker. Ic might not have been typical of his kind in any sense, but there were some traits of his heritage— and his somewhat peculiar upbringing— that would not allow these colors on this man to last. “With all due respect, sir, I’d like to call you that,” he said, shying from his own boldness by clutching the PADD to his chest beneath both thin arms. “At least until you stop doubting yourself. That is how it works, right? When things go to one’s head?”He wouldn’t say it, not on duty, anyway, but… confidence would have been a good look on the Trill. “Sorry, I shouldn’t be dispensing unsolicited support without introductions. Ic Arbrell, physics labs.” It was a bit of a dance figuring out how to juggle the PADD and offer his hand at the same time, but he managed it, in time.

[Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - Front Ear - Deck 26 Labs]Cerjess tilted his head slightly and regarded the younger man curiously. He got the distinct impression that in the past two minutes, this Betazoid had learned more about him than he knew about himself. The Trill didn't spend time around Betazoids, so he had no idea if they were all so perceptive or not, but he did know now was not the time to ask such invasive questions. Though, whom it would be invading, he wasn't so sure. "Cerjess Miren," he replied to the introduction, glancing down to make sure his own hands were empty before shaking. "Geology. Occasionally spotlighting in meteorology." He leaned back against the desk once more. "Physics, huh? Brave soul." That would be why Ic's findings didn't make a lot of sense to him. Physics had always been difficult for him to understand. He much preferred tangible forces of nature.

[Deck 26 labs, Front Ear] There was absolutely no way he was going to remember C e r j e s s M i r e n’s name, but he would try. He tried to find the shapes of the letters in varying scripts located in the Trill’s spots. The best he could do about that was look like he was staring awkwardly, until the scientist spoke up again. “Sorry, brave?” The word caught him off-guard, and Ic found a crease forming on his brow. That was the last thing he’d consider himself for a highly theoretical discipline as his, selected almost intentionally so as to avoid any risk of away missions, combat, or other mortal peril in space or otherwise. Although he knew very many people tended to prefer more tangible sciences, citing a lack of comprehension of his particular field, it had never made much sense to him that they felt that way, either. They all felt so profoundly static whenever the term “quantum physics” so much as existed in their vicinity, it was impossible for him to actually understand why. He subsequently tried to leave as much of that out as possible. “You’re braver than I am, sir, your mistakes could put lives in danger. Mine mean doing more math over again until it makes sense. Wait, that was… not inspiring, was it? This is why I graduate an ensign only, isn’t it?”

[Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - Front Ear - Deck 26 Labs]The Trill chuckled a little awkwardly, reaching up to scratch the side of his head in thought. He never really considered the amount of lives at stake if he got something wrong... But he also always erred on the side caution, doing as much research as possible before making any recommendations. "Brave enough to tackle a specialty many can't even begin to understand," he explained lightly. The following question gave him pause, though, and a look of confusion crossed his face before he responded. "Don't most people graduate as Ensigns?" Perhaps he misunderstood Ic's point. That happened to him a lot.

[Deck 26 Labs] “Yeah, they do, generally. I’ve definitely seen a couple go as Lieutenants, but with, you know, the excellent scores in leadership, and—” he trailed off, nodding, feeling the stain of what he'd said not a moment ago coloring Cerjess' words. He glanced downward, and up again, following his breath. “I just meant that— well, it was kind of a joke, I guess, as well as a testament to moments like this where I probably accidentally insult you, which is not becoming of even an ensign. I'm sorry, sir.”Ic stilled, certain now that he had made his point and his apology, despite it all getting away from him, warped by a sense of forcing normal. He looked back at Cerjess with an expression that did not change despite the softness that moved behind it, that settled into Ic’s black eyes. If the Betazoid was brave at all, it was for trying at conversation, instead of just asking for PADDs and data access. “Have you been to Kerelia?” he asked suddenly. “In any of those storms?”

[Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - Front Ear - Deck 26 Labs]"Hey, don't worry about it," was all Cerjess could manage to say, with what he hoped was a reassuring smile. While it was very difficult to offend the man, it was equally as difficult for him to express that he was not offended. So he was quite relieved when the conversation shifted back to a topic that came far easier to him. "Not during a storm, no. Commander Quinn has, though. What he expected to be a light dusting of snow turned into a full blizzard in a matter of minutes and almost trapped him without shelter. He doesn't like to talk about it." That was their first clue that the weather patterns did not follow normal expectations of Class M planets. Cerjess had definitely had his work cut out for him after that to find a way to more accurately predict severity and duration of the various weather systems. "I was part of the team that assisted the Talorians on their homeworld. Those storms were literally tearing the planet apart." He'd never seen anything like it before, and hoped he never saw it again. At least, not in a setting where his crewmates would have to risk their lives to fix the problem. He was definitely impressed they were able to pull it off, though. And very upset he missed the lightshow.

[Deck 26 Labs, Front Ear] “That’s so cool,” he grinned a little, using the Terran term with such ease it nearly sounded natural. No language ever sounded fully natural in Ic Arbrell’s mouth, however: ever so slightly overenunciated, irregularly paced, a step away from stuttering. He’d had a bit of a stutter when he was learning to language instead of telepathy as a child, in fact— and even still occasionally after Lieutenant Th’zhaar left the physics lab— but the word cool just worked, as if it had been rehearsed for hours in front of a mirror. But of course it hadn’t, that would have been lame.”Wait— Talorians. I heard about that, mentioned during a debrief on my way out here. That’s, like, kind of historic.” First Leanna talking to dragons and interdimensional beings, and now Cerjess had relocated Talorians amid all that murder? Ic ws simultaneously impressed and terrified about the potential his very first assignment seemed to bring. And here he’d believed that a station at the edge of the quadrant was a strategic assignment, not a fortuitous one. “What did you get to do? Did they name anything after you?” He’d always wanted something named after him.

[Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - Front Ear - Deck 26 Labs]Cerjess laughed lightly at the excited response from the younger man. He had gotten used to 'strange', 'exciting' and even 'historic' events happening on the station, he'd almost forgotten what it must sound like to someone who wasn't used to such things happening on a weekly basis. "I was doing the research on the ground," he explained with a shrug. "Once I was able to figure out the seismic activity was being caused by the storms, and the storms were being caused by the increased thermal energy from the sun, Commander Quinn came up with the solution and headed up the action on the ship. Then I had to keep the Talorian Primary from contacting the Captain while she was on the Mac during the procedure, and I wasn't even able to watch it happen. Still a little bitter about that. If anyone got something named after him, it'd be Quinn. That part I don't mind, though. I'm not exactly a spotlight kind of person." Usually honors such as that came with celebrations and speeches... And Cerjess had trouble not rambling around anyone of a higher authority than him; he didn't want to find out how much of a fool he would be trying to speak in front of a crowd full of them.

[Deck 26 Labs] ‘...to watch it happen.’The planet blown apart. He understood that bruise, that pinch and twist now, the deep sensation beneath the ribs he couldn’t place before when the topic arose. It had been faint then, enough to ignore or attribute to some other vague pain in some other vague soul anywhere on the station, but he understood it slowly as Cerjess spoke. Not fully, though, and not even very well. It remained a sort of phantom, an ache beneath numb skin. Ic was quiet for a moment as he sat with it, and the more familiar shades of deference to those who were more. Ic was reminded all too suddenly that he was here (he was useless) by the suggestion of some such figure, and he tensed up, just a little, again. The PADD he’d come to deliver found its way to the nearest flat surface. The longer he let the situation run in the back of his mind, he realized it was really probably nothing more than a broken probe. But it would probably be up to this department to retrieve now, the storms being what they were. He wouldn’t pretend that he wasn’t disappointed, but he certainly wasn’t going to let it show. Consciously, anyway. “Kerelia sounds like fun, though.” he said lamely in comparison to the previous conversation, but entirely honest. “If you go down with your team again, could you request they let me come along? I’ll think of some rationale for being useful in the meantime.”

[Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - Front Ear - Deck 26 Labs]Cerjess tilted his head slightly in curiosity at the request. A few months ago it would have made more sense. Did the Ensign not know the colony was already being resided in? "You don't have to have a professional reason to go. They do tours all the time, people are already living there, and a lot have started spending their vacations down there." So why hadn't Cerjess gone down there yet? Well... He didn't really have an answer to that, except he kept forgetting it was a possibility.

[Deck 26 labs, Front Ear] “Oh. Well, that certainly shows how much I pay attention.” The laugh that curled his admission slanted sharply inward. Although he overheard the overwhelming majority of the station’s energy in sound and color, he also seemed to miss the big points. At least, the things that were big to others. Ic Arbrell spent his whole life in the smallest parts of Everything that he could have a certain blindness to anything but fine points. That, and it wasn’t exactly like he got out enough to distinguish more than the white noise of chatter. Maybe the both of them could have done with a little time away from their respective labs. The runoff of Cerjess’ ever so slight bitterness still nagged and twisted, and made Ic want to remedy it. Need to, almost. Not with another planet exploding, but, you know… something nice. “...we could grab a drink and go sometime, if you ever get bored when you’re off?”Please don't think that's weird please don't think that's weird—
