Chief Science Officer’s Log: One of our long range probes recently transmitted data on a planetoid that for all intents and purposes shouldn’t be where it is. There’s no evidence of a star being anywhere in its vicinity, which begs the question: What is it doing there? Even more curious is that there’s evidence of an actual atmosphere closely identifiable as a Class L planet. This is arguably one of the biggest scientific finds in decades. Starfleet has tasked the crew of the Mac to be among the first to investigate. My report will determine if it’s worthwhile of further investigation by Starfleet Science and other researchers. No pressure.
[Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Bridge, USS Mac - Melkon System] Isaiah could only hope that Thea had actually been getting some sleep recently. Upon learning that the Mac was going to have first eyes on this planetoid in the Melkon sector, he had certainly bent her ear several times in the wee hours of the night. And considering what they found here, it was possible he’d do the same once they returned. Either way, the moment was finally before them. He could feel the slight tug of the ship as it dropped out of warp. He was on his feet as the planetoid came into view. All he could do was stare at it, even though it wasn’t much to look at. With no star to illuminate it, they were relying strictly on the sensors, the computer’s a and the faint illumination that the surrounding stars cast upon it, which was negligible to the human eye. Isaiah had to wonder how many of the people here actually understood the gravity of what was before them? A natural self-sustaining ecosystem sans a star? If they could figure out how such a thing was possible, it could revolutionize everything they knew about life in general. Uncovering this secret would be like actually finding the Fountain of Youth, a myth. Yet, this particular my stood every possibility of becoming fact. ”There she is, Captain,” Isaiah said. He was well aware of Felicity’s demotion, but addressing her as Commander still felt a bit foreign to his tongue. Of course, with her being the commanding officer of the Mac presently, the title was certainly appropriate. ”’Sometimes a clearly defined error is the only way to discover the truth.’ ” Isaiah shook his head. ”She’s a floating contradiction. One always hopes, but I never imagined I’d ever come across something like this.” Typically, such phenomena found themselves in the paths of great ships like the USS Enterprise. It was a comfort to learn that those captains and their crew didn’t get to have all the fun. The away team had already been selected and briefed. At this point, only time and meters separated them from one of the greatest scientific finds of the century.

[Commander Felicity Ellis - Bridge, USS Mac - Melkon System]Being back on the Mac was a bizarre comfort, and sitting in that chair, well, it felt like coming home. She had missed it. She had spend most of her career vehemently against taking it, instead believing that her true mission in life lay somewhere else entirely, but once she'd had it she'd begun to see things differently. The view from the chair is unique. The corners of her mouth twitched upward when Quinn addressed her as 'Captain'. Disgraced and demoted as she'd been, she realised she didn't find the error, whether intentional or not, to be as distasteful as she'd expected. She didn't bother correcting him, after all, it wasn't a completely inaccurate title given that neither Captain Baker nor Captain Eastman were currently aboard. The atmosphere on the Bridge was one of a quiet awe, with an undercurrent of excitement rippling beneath the surface - she was loathe to sully that with unnecessary protocol. She stood too. The planetoid filled the viewscreen and she looked hard at it, eyes slightly narrowing, as though just with the power and focus of her stare she would reveal the answers to the strange mystery. While the scientists' attentions may be on what the planet contained, her thoughts were questions of how. "Paradox." It's simply what it was, and it was the only word she could really offer at that moment. She stepped backward, and once the edge of the Captain's chair hit the backs of her knees, she sat. =/\= "Bridge to Away Team. Are you in position?" =/\= While Felicity waited for the response from the chosen few who should by now be at least making their way toward the transporter room, she took the opportunity to check in with Flight. "Helm, status."

[ SCPO Kaya Som, Chief Engineer | Engineering]
The youngest Trill Chief Engineer pulling dual duty on a remote station and sovreign class starship with a record of going AWOL knew better than to change anyhing. The previous chief had years of experience under her belt and was universally respected by most if not all of the crew. Kaya's sudden promotion had been unexpected by most, even if, perhaps, Command had given it long and thoughtful consideration. Kaya had joked with Kova and Connor Lynch once, that Starfleet's way of keeping wayward crew from jumping ship was to flatter and tangle them up with a promotion, but Kaya had to give Captain Eastman the benefit of the doubt. Well, she preferred to. She preferred to imagine she was qualified because even Kaya's constant self-assurance and quick tongue were feeling shaky in the new post. Not that she'd ever let on.
For her first official mission in charge, Kaya decided the Chief Engineer's place was in Engineering. The helm and ops were sending constant streams of data and Kaya was working with the computer specialist teams to craft bespoke algorithms to interpret it, every data point, and try to analyze the data. It was going to take awhile to get right, and it was all Kaya could do to find a few minutes to sit down at a terminal and help hands on. Because even while much of Engineering was assigned to the mission, the everyday running of the ship couldn't be ignored. And everyone had questions.
Can I change my shift? Can I get elevated clearance to the cargo bay airlocks? Can you approve this equipment allocation? Do you know why this protocol is bugging out? And forever. Loads could be delegated to her more-experienced assistant George Hugo, but it left no time to focus on doing what she liked best - actually engineering.
She sat back in the chair and ran her hands through her hair.

[Sickbay – U.S.S. Mac – Melkon System]
Dr. Hunt was spending the last minute making sure the Medkit he was taking on the away mission was fully prepared with the Medical Records of the away team and looking at the items he was selected for the mission. It was a little hard to be fully prepared for any possible side effects as a planet like this was extremely rare. He placed the last couple of medical instruments on his Medkit and placed a PADD with several notes. As he finished, he looked at his Medkit and began walking to the Turbolift. He wondered what new groundbreaking discoveries they will make on the new planet and how much this type of setting would have a reaction on the people in the team.
He heard the Commander asking if the away team was in a position to which Hunt responded =/\= Almost there, Captain. =/\= He said as he moved to the Transporter room.
[Transporter Room]
Hunt arrived at the Transporter room and waited for the rest of the team to meet so they could depart.

[Ens. Syl O'Connell - USS Mac - Bridge]Apprehension was tangible in the Ensign's bones as she sat at the Mac's helm for the second time... The first since her return from Caldonia. While she had been eager to be released back to full duty, she couldn't help but wonder how badly this mission was going to turn out. Her gaze lifted from the console to the view screen above her as the planet filled it. A flicker of pain crossed the base of her skull, and she lowered her gaze back to the navigation panel. It had been a long time since she'd been in one seat for so long, and her body was reminding her it was no longer accustomed to it. At least her meds were in her quarters... Hopefully the Commander was privy to her need for them if it got bad enough she could no longer focus. Her attention was drawn outward once more as she heard Commander Ellis behind her. "We'll be entering orbit in about five minutes," she reported. The ship was far larger and more powerful than anything she had piloted in recent months, but it still moved effortlessly at her commands, soaring through space towards their destination at impulse. Tag Felicity Ellis [Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - USS Mac - Science Labs --> Transporter Room]Cerjess looked through his case one more time, making sure he had all the equipment he would need to provide an accurate analysis on the planet. His excitement was rising at the thought of being one of the first to set foot on such a mystery. Perhaps he'd even be the one to unravel it. Once certain he had everything for his part of the job, he closed the case and slung it over his shoulder, and grabbed the other one containing torches for them to set up when they reached their destination. With the lack of a sun in this system, that meant the planet would be pitch black. That thought made him pause with a twinge of nervousness, but he pushed it aside and left the lab, crates in hand. Reaching the transporter room, he breathed a soft sigh of relief to find he wasn't the last one there, for once. "Hello, Doctor," he greeted the other man simply as he positioned the crates on the pad before getting into position himself. Tag Jonathan Hunt

[ LT Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]Anger. Resentment. Shame. Disgust. Crushing doubt. The reprimand handed to one Joshua Niles was one that had hurt in so many ways. Months he had devoted to truly earning his place on the bridge of a starship, only to lose it through... Well there were too bloody many things to list quickly. But most importantly, he had failed entirely too many people who'd put their faith in him... and he was firmly at the top of that list. At least, for now he was able to mostly work where it was known he was truly proficient; he might be on thin ice and expected to perform the entire breadth of duties expected of him, but at least the command element had not expected a sink-or-swim performance out of him and had allowed him to mostly focus on his duties with the Tactical sections. Though, it did sting, knowing that the chair from which he had held the watch would be denied him for as long as he would need to prove if he'd ever be worthy of it again, that the officer of the watch qualification for which he'd worked so damn hard was suspended until further notice. Though as they neared the planetoid hanging out in interstellar space, Niles' hands flew across his board as he brought up readings from the surface, and his face screwed in a look of dismay, especially as he tried to imagine the surface conditions, especially given the absence of a nearby light source to provide any kind of illumination. "How is that even possible?" he let out. "Where is it even getting the energy to maintain enough warmth the atmosphere didn't precipitate?"

[ Cadet Left Ear to-Ennien - Transporter Room] Left Ear adjusted her harness, even though it fit perfectly and all the straps lay where they were supposed to. She couldn't help it, though. This was her first official mission as Starfleet. In pouches attached to the harness she had her personal med scanner (it fit her hand best) and a backup Starfleet-issue medical tricorder, an emergency medical kit, a couple of usefuls (she never went anywhere without them), and a few other small items. Her combadge was affixed to one of the straps that criss-crossed to run over her narrow shoulders. The Sivaoan trotted from her quarters to the transporter room, glad to be free of her course work for the moment. She was nearing the doors when Commander Ellis' call came through. She tapped her badge to reply, =/\= ' There now, Commander.' =/\= The doors swooshed open and Left Ear entered to find a couple of other members of the team already present. ' Doctor, Lieutenant,' the cadet acknowledged after double-checking the Trill's pips. Soft tag Felicity EllisTag Jonathan Hunt and Syl O'Connell

Shavan had been monitoring their approach to the planetoid closely, and now packed up the necessary equipment to join the away team. =/\= In position, =/\= he confirmed as he entered the transporter room just after the Sivaoan. [Ensign Rin Zakir - Transporter Room, USS Mac]
Zak had been intrigued to hear about a planetoid seemingly floating in space, and could appreciate why the science teams were pretty excited. Especially given that he had also heard that it was apparently a Class L, even with no apparent sun to speak of. It was as if the planet was being held there by divine will alone, and he would be very curious as to the reasoning behind it.
It wouldn't be his job to figure any of this out though. That was a job for the clever people who worked in sciences. His job would be to try and make sure no one got hurt over there while also not dying himself. He wasn't quite ready for the Celestial Temple just yet, so he made sure he was good to go before making his way to the transporter room.
As he entered, the communication from the bridge reached him, and he tapped on his combadge to reply.
=/\= In position, standing by =/\=, he confirmed, acknowledging the other assembled officers as he made his way to the transporter pad. He was still fairly new to this crew, but in time he would come to know many of those he worked with, both on the ship and the station. In a professional capacity, at the very least.

[ Crewman Ezra Mora - Engineering] Well, the day had gotten off to a glorious start. Ezra moved towards the Chief's office... the new Chief, that is. Kaya Som was a helluva an engineer. Anyone could see that. It wasn't a surprise that she had been promoted to the position. Anyone that had a problem with it was clearly up in their feelings about it. He sighed as he approached her door. She had been pretty busy, and Ezra really didn't care to be that guy that was just piling on. Still, there was actual work to be done. He literally knocked on the frame of her door to announce his presence. "Hey, Chief," Ezra began, "I just wanted to tell you let you know it's going to take a little longer than expected replace that fractured EPS relay than expected. Not to be too long-winded, but Miller's out for today. Puked all over Pearson as soon as the lift doors opened. Thought it was best he reported to Sickbay. Still, I can handle the swap myself. Just wanted you to know it'd take longer."

[Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Transporter Room --> Planetoid] After making a brief stop to pick up the gear he had previously packed, Quinn found himself entering the transporter room. His timing seemed to match PO1 S'Riia as well, whom was just arriving. Isaiah looked at those that had already gathered before them: Hunt, Cerjess, Th'zhaar, Left Ear and Rin. He took a deep breath before addressing the team. "Good, it looks like everyone is here," he began. "Let's not waist any time. Everyone mount up." Quinn took a few steps up the transporter pad and then turned to face forward. He watched as the others did the same, and when it appeared that everyone was ready, Isaiah turn his attention to the transporter chief. "Energize."The transporter room faded from sight and was eventually replaced with what felt like darkness. It took a moment for Isaiah's eyes to adjust, but he eventually noticed a faint glow along what he perceived to be the ground. The glow didn't provide any real illumination, but seemed to contrast against the darkness. "Torches on," Isaiah ordered. He pressed a button and turned on the torch strapped to his arm. After being able to see, he could see that the glow was coming from what appeared to be some type of flora, most likely a fungi. That would certainly need to be analyzed. Isaiah turned to face the others. "All right everyone, listen up," he stated. Once he had everyone's attention, he proceeded. "First order of business, the ground rules. No one goes off alone. This atmosphere does have Class L properties, and that typically means no fauna, but that's not an absolute. Most importantly, don't be shy. You see something, say something. Don't second guess yourself.""Now, let's get started by securing the area. This is our transport site. Rin and S'Riia: get the lights and pattern enhancers set up. Let's go with a radius of about 6 meters. Be sure the Mac can establish a transporter lock on our position," Quinn ordered. "Cerjess, Th'zhaar: Begin scanning our immediate area. Atmosphere and mineral composition. Let's start to figure out why we're not wearing EVA suits down here. Hunt, Left Ear: Analyze any bio-signatures in our immediate vicinity. Make sure we're not being exposed to any sort of bacterial contaminants. And that stuff that's glowing, see if you can collect some samples of that and figure out what it is."Quinn reached up and tapped his comm badge. =A= "Quinn to Mac. Just wanted to let you know that we've touched down safely. It's a balmy five degrees centigrade, and we will begin our initial survey shortly." =A=

[Transporter Room – U.S.S. MAC ] It did not take much time since Hunt arrived in the Transporter room when personnel began coming in. They were all briefed and read about the situation, so there hardly needed to be a second briefing about their mission. It was relatively simple. Exploration. When the Science Officer came him and greeted him. Hunt politely bowed “ Lieutenant Miren, pleasure working with you” he said. He observed the Lieutenant taking his place on the transporter pad. It did not take long in which he had his Medical Companion. He was intrigued by the species as it was something that he had not seen a lot. She was a Sivaoan and it was a species that was not very common by the time he froze. He had plenty of questions, but they would have to wait. “ Greetings Left Ear. Glad to have you with us.” Hunt responded politely. It was not long until the Commander arrived and asked the transport. It was not soon after that his vision turns white. [Planetoid] As his vision turns from white to materialization. As expected the planetoid was dark as it was no sun. His vision was dark at first as it took seconds for his vision to adjust. As the Commander ordered torches to create lighter, he complied with the order. He turned on his touch that would allow him to at least see what he was doing until a more permanent solution was involved. He took a couple of steps as he wanted to feel the terrain as it could provide a couple of clues. The surface was chalky and relatively flat. He observed some plants that would appear to be our equivalent of Fungi. A more detailed analysis should be given. He expected the duties would need to be divided by several individuals or groups. As the Commander gave the order, Hunt merely responded “ Aye, Aye, Commander”. Hunt then moved towards Left Ear and remained standing next to her. It would make sense for them to communicate. “ Would you mind doing the scans for Bio Signatures? I will do the Bacterial contaminants. I have done those before”. Hunt knew that his partner is learning from Academy coursework from her personnel file. Instead of just doing things he would open his medical tricorder and instead of holding it like usual he would give a distance so if she wanted to, she could observe how he did it. He pressed his medical tricorder and change the mode of the scans from personal to environmental. He moved the Tricorder around and approached the Fungi itself. He then looked at them and said “ Alright, interesting…. there appear to be bacteria in the area. And it appears that the source is the fungi. The good news is that none of them appear to be hazardous or dangerous. So, it’s quite safe to obtain a sample.” He then smiled at Left Ear and said “ Alright, once you are done with the scan. Do you mind taking a sample and reporting our findings to the Commander?” Hunt asked as he was interested to see the technique for collecting samples. It was not dissimilar to a medical residency that the best way to learn was by doing stuff. Tags Left Ear to-Ennien Soft the rest of the away team

[Felicity Ellis - Bridge, USS Mac]"Enigma," she murmured, repeating the word that suddenly seemed most apt. She thought it suited the planetoid considerably beteter than the glut of letters and numbers it had been assigned. She counted off, fingers pressing one at a time against her thigh, as the members of the away team checked in. She'd been nine months out of a centre chair, but some habits just died hard. When Quinn announced it was his turn, she turned to look at him and nodded. "Good luck, Commander." She smiled; not bothering to hide her pleasure at the prospect of being among the crew to study this phenomenon. Felicity didn't need to say anything else, she knew the away team was in the best hands they had. "Alright Helm, maintain geostationary orbit. We might not be able to see them with our own eyes, but I want us right over them. Everyone else, let's see what we can learn from up here."She turned her attention to the console built into her chair, and began cycling through the data already coming in via reports and scans from the various engaged departments throughout the ship. It wasn't long before they heard Quinn's voice once more, confirming their successful transport. "Sounds tropical," she commented, before officially responding. =/\= "Away Team this is the Mac, acknowledged. Standard procedure folks, you know the drill, I want regular updates. Take care of yourselves down there. Mac out." =/\= She cut the channel and addressed the man on Tactical I. "Lieutenant Niles, make sure we have a lock on them at all times. The second we don't, for whatever reason, I need to know." Without much else to do, she surrendered herself to the drudgery of being the little 1950s wife, waiting for the husband to come home from his adventures at the office. Such was the reality of commanding a starship.

[ SCPO Kaya Som, PO2 Yande Djigo | Engineering ]Kaya was just getting to her feet when Mora arrived. Before she was chief, they'd never worked closely together because of their different specialities, but he had a good reputation. And now a slightly more infamous one - his teenage human-trill daughter had broadcast video of a murdered Cardassian war criminal hanging from a crane to practically the entire quadrant. Everyone had seen it. Thinking of it made Kaya greet him with a smile. "What? No. ja'kala, [fn]Trill language for 'elders', an interjection.[/fn] no problem," she said, probably trying to hard to wave away Mora's concern about piling on. She stood up and crossed her arms to shrug. "I mean, it's Miller. Better on Pearsen than down a ventilation grate. Here..." Kaya referred to her console. "If you want help, grab ... Fournier." Petty Officer Etienne Fournier knew his way around EPS relays. "He'll be happy for a break from plasma venting." It was about that time that PO Yande Djigo poked her head in. "Chief, the away team is on surface." Kaya nodded a thanks and prepared to head out of the office to have a look at how the data from the away team would be coming in. "You want to see?" she asked Mora. Isaiah Quinn (Ezra Mora)

[Ens. Syl O'Connell - USS Mac - Bridge]Unlike most Starfleet officers, Syl was grateful to not be part of the away team heading down to the surface. Once upon a time she would have jumped at the chance... But after the first, and last, time she had departed the Mac with the away team, she found her sense of adventure had been limited to the holosuites. Even that had been dampened after Kova informed her of their frequent malfunctions. Listening to the voices that checked in as she guided the ship into orbit, she felt a twinge of concern when she recognized Shavan's. He'd had even more experiences with away missions going bad than she did. But as a scientist, this was precisely the sort of mission he enjoyed - or so she assumed. And with the planet being uninhabited, there was a far lesser risk of ambushes and captures. "Maintaining stationary orbit," she acknowledged the command, fingers deftly passing over her console. Then it seemed there was nothing for her to do but wait. One hand lifted to play with the necklace her sister had sent her - one she hasn't taken off from the moment she slipped it around her neck. They would come back safely, she assured herself. Though she wished she felt as confident as her thoughts sounded. Tag Felicity Ellis [Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - USS Mac - Transporter Room ---> Planet]One by one the others filed in, and Cerjess gave a nod to each. He was slightly surprised to see both Quinn and Th'zhaar were part of the away team, though he could hardly fault either of them for taking part in such a scientific discovery. In just a couple minutes, they were dematerializing. The darkness that awaited when he rematerialized had been expected, but was still disconcerting. He quickly switched on his wrist light, casting it in the direction of Commander Quinn's voice as the other man began to issue orders. The glowing fungus beneath their feet caught his attention, and he knelt down to get a closer look. Absolutely fascinating... Bioluminescence of some sort? Hearing his name pulled him out of his thoughts, and he straightened once more. "Yes sir," he replied as he pulled his tricorder off his belt. It took a moment to configure the device to the proper settings, but once he did the readings came through almost immediately. "Crust is primarily metamorphic rock... It's retaining heat somehow... But it's too dense to be able read the composition of anything deeper. We may need the Mac's sensors for that analysis..." The Trill took a couple steps, remembering at the last moment where he had left the crate of torches and swerving to avoid walking into it. The extra light would definitely be useful when the security team got them set up... "I'm detecting a few underground caverns in the area. Temperatures within are elevated above the rest of the crust..." He'd take that over landing on a chunk of ice any day. But without a sun, the heat had to be coming from the core... A core that hot would normally make the surface nothing but molten rock. Out of curiosity he knelt down once more, pressing his hand against the chalky surface between the patches of glowing fungi. "You want to see?" she asked Mora. [NPC - Crewman Ezra Mora - Engineering, USS Mac ] Ezra had to admit, when he found the Chief, she seemed to be in pretty good spirits. It also appeared that the news he had shared with her hadn't shaken her in the least. She'd pivoted quite easily and adjusted. Just further testament that she was the right person for the job. There was a part of him that wondered if it was simply the person she was, or the person she had matured to be. Of course there had been rumors when she took leave a few months ago. Some people chirped that she'd up and quit, but there had to be more to it than that. It wasn't Ezra's business, so he wasn't going poking around to learn anything more than the Chief was willing to share. Still, seeing how composed she was now, it gave him a bit of hope that the same could be true for his own daughter, Rimi. It was tough raising a child, and it felt damned near impossible raising Rimi sometimes. She was angry... and spontaneous! She had questions that he just didn't know how to answer. He could read books, watch videos and holos, but he didn't have all the answers to the questions that a teenage girl had. That a Trill teenage girl had. That was supposed to have been Miori's job. "Fournier. Got it," Ezra said as the Chief made the suggestion. The crewman figured he could rescue him from plasma venting for a spell to help with that. Though before he could do that PO Yande Djigo announced that data was starting to come in from the away team. As the Chief asked if he wanted to see, Ezra paused briefly. Some bosses were people-people. They were social and liked to interact with the people working for them. Though, they always fell into the same delusion as any other boss: When you ask a subordinate if they wanted to do something... the correct answer was always yes. Whether the interest was there or not, Ezra wasn't about to say 'no'. "Sure," Ezra said. "Thanks, Chief." If he could grab Fournier later, then there was little chance that he'd fall behind schedule. He stepped aside, and prepared to follow the Chief's lead.
