[ LT Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]{Quoted Posts} [Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Bridge, USS Mac, Melkon System] Hearing the word, paradox leave Commander Ellis' lips caused a slight smile to spread across Isaiah's lips. "Possibly," he replied simply. "Though, I'm hoping that we can get that downgraded to an enigma. At least then, we stand a chance at comprehending what's before us." Perhaps his excitement was getting the better of him. He assumed as much as Commander Ellis contacted the away team to see if they were in position. As Ensign O'Connell announced that they should be in orbit in about five minutes, Isaiah took it as a curtain call. It was showtime. Lieutenant Niles' question hadn't gone unheard. "That's exactly what we're hoping to find out," the science officer responded. As the calls came in from members of the team, Isaiah turned towards Commander Ellis. "I guess that's my cue." He nodded at his commanding officer and moved towards the turbolift doors. Once inside, he spun around and instructed the lift to carry him to the Transporter Room. ...
[ Meanwhile, in high orbit of the planetoid....] Systems flicker to life as proximal sensors detect an energized object establishing orbit. Its protocols suggest observation. After a steady increase of power, the once latent satellite increases its orbital velocity to establish a route to intercept and observe this energized object, the USS Mac. [Felicity Ellis - Bridge, USS Mac]"Enigma," she murmured, repeating the word that suddenly seemed most apt. She thought it suited the planetoid considerably beteter than the glut of letters and numbers it had been assigned. She counted off, fingers pressing one at a time against her thigh, as the members of the away team checked in. She'd been nine months out of a centre chair, but some habits just died hard. When Quinn announced it was his turn, she turned to look at him and nodded. "Good luck, Commander." She smiled; not bothering to hide her pleasure at the prospect of being among the crew to study this phenomenon. Felicity didn't need to say anything else, she knew the away team was in the best hands they had. "Alright Helm, maintain geostationary orbit. We might not be able to see them with our own eyes, but I want us right over them. Everyone else, let's see what we can learn from up here."She turned her attention to the console built into her chair, and began cycling through the data already coming in via reports and scans from the various engaged departments throughout the ship. It wasn't long before they heard Quinn's voice once more, confirming their successful transport. "Sounds tropical," she commented, before officially responding. =/\= "Away Team this is the Mac, acknowledged. Standard procedure folks, you know the drill, I want regular updates. Take care of yourselves down there. Mac out." =/\= She cut the channel and addressed the man on Tactical I. "Lieutenant Niles, make sure we have a lock on them at all times. The second we don't, for whatever reason, I need to know." Without much else to do, she surrendered herself to the drudgery of being the little 1950s wife, waiting for the husband to come home from his adventures at the office. Such was the reality of commanding a starship. [Ens. Syl O'Connell - USS Mac - Bridge]Unlike most Starfleet officers, Syl was grateful to not be part of the away team heading down to the surface. Once upon a time she would have jumped at the chance... But after the first, and last, time she had departed the Mac with the away team, she found her sense of adventure had been limited to the holosuites. Even that had been dampened after Kova informed her of their frequent malfunctions. Listening to the voices that checked in as she guided the ship into orbit, she felt a twinge of concern when she recognized Shavan's. He'd had even more experiences with away missions going bad than she did. But as a scientist, this was precisely the sort of mission he enjoyed - or so she assumed. And with the planet being uninhabited, there was a far lesser risk of ambushes and captures. "Maintaining stationary orbit," she acknowledged the command, fingers deftly passing over her console. Then it seemed there was nothing for her to do but wait. One hand lifted to play with the necklace her sister had sent her - one she hasn't taken off from the moment she slipped it around her neck. They would come back safely, she assured herself. Though she wished she felt as confident as her thoughts sounded. Well that certainly had been a rhetorical question from the Tactical Officer. Of course that was what they were there to find out, but the sheer magnitude of the scientific near-impossibility at hand was staggering. Though, as Commander Quinn made his way off the Bridge, he certainly found himself glad he was not on the Away Team; something about being down there, in the Stygian darkness of a world that lacked a primary to orbit about and provide it with warmth and light, with only the pinpricks of stars to provide illumination? No, thank you. And if that made him a coward, well, he could live with that too. As the Away Team beamed down, Commander Ellis started issuing orders, and automatically his hand flew to his board and actually brought up a dedicated pane to show the status of transporter locks on all of their commbadges, and set it up to also display the pattern enhancers once they would be set up; that was something he'd known to expect. "Aye, Ma'am. I have a lock on all their commbadges but... stand by."He had just been about to report that the planned pattern enhancers weren't up yet, which would be expected given they'd just hit the ground and would need a few minutes to do that, but something had registered on sensors and demanded his attention. With practiced ease he brought up the information at hand, which was, to be fair, minimal. But there was something there all right. "I'm picking up a power source, very faint; looks like it's on a faster orbit and just cleared the edge of the planetoid. I'm having a hard time keeping tabs on it with passives alone but it looks like it's... altering its orbit but I can't confirm without going active."

[Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Transporter Room --> Planetoid] After making a brief stop to pick up the gear he had previously packed, Quinn found himself entering the transporter room. His timing seemed to match PO1 S'Riia as well, whom was just arriving. Isaiah looked at those that had already gathered before them: Hunt, Cerjess, Th'zhaar, Left Ear and Rin. He took a deep breath before addressing the team. "Good, it looks like everyone is here," he began. "Let's not waist any time. Everyone mount up." Quinn took a few steps up the transporter pad and then turned to face forward. He watched as the others did the same, and when it appeared that everyone was ready, Isaiah turn his attention to the transporter chief. "Energize."The transporter room faded from sight and was eventually replaced with what felt like darkness. It took a moment for Isaiah's eyes to adjust, but he eventually noticed a faint glow along what he perceived to be the ground. The glow didn't provide any real illumination, but seemed to contrast against the darkness. "Torches on," Isaiah ordered. He pressed a button and turned on the torch strapped to his arm. After being able to see, he could see that the glow was coming from what appeared to be some type of flora, most likely a fungi. That would certainly need to be analyzed. Isaiah turned to face the others. "All right everyone, listen up," he stated. Once he had everyone's attention, he proceeded. "First order of business, the ground rules. No one goes off alone. This atmosphere does have Class L properties, and that typically means no fauna, but that's not an absolute. Most importantly, don't be shy. You see something, say something. Don't second guess yourself.""Now, let's get started by securing the area. This is our transport site. Rin and S'Riia: get the lights and pattern enhancers set up. Let's go with a radius of about 6 meters. Be sure the Mac can establish a transporter lock on our position," Quinn ordered. "Cerjess, Th'zhaar: Begin scanning our immediate area. Atmosphere and mineral composition. Let's start to figure out why we're not wearing EVA suits down here. Hunt, Left Ear: Analyze any bio-signatures in our immediate vicinity. Make sure we're not being exposed to any sort of bacterial contaminants. And that stuff that's glowing, see if you can collect some samples of that and figure out what it is."Quinn reached up and tapped his comm badge. =A= "Quinn to Mac. Just wanted to let you know that we've touched down safely. It's a balmy five degrees centigrade, and we will begin our initial survey shortly." =A=

As expected the planetoid was dark as it was no sun. His vision was dark at first as it took seconds for his vision to adjust. As the Commander ordered torches to create lighter, he complied with the order. He turned on his touch that would allow him to at least see what he was doing until a more permanent solution was involved. He took a couple of steps as he wanted to feel the terrain as it could provide a couple of clues. The surface was chalky and relatively flat. He observed some plants that would appear to be our equivalent of Fungi. A more detailed analysis should be given. He expected the duties would need to be divided by several individuals or groups. As the Commander gave the order, Hunt merely responded “ Aye, Aye, Commander”. Hunt then moved towards Left Ear and remained standing next to her. It would make sense for them to communicate. “ Would you mind doing the scans for Bio Signatures? I will do the Bacterial contaminants. I have done those before”. Hunt knew that his partner is learning from Academy coursework from her personnel file. Instead of just doing things he would open his medical tricorder and instead of holding it like usual he would give a distance so if she wanted to, she could observe how he did it. He pressed his medical tricorder and change the mode of the scans from personal to environmental. He moved the Tricorder around and approached the Fungi itself. He then looked at them and said “ Alright, interesting…. there appear to be bacteria in the area. And it appears that the source is the fungi. The good news is that none of them appear to be hazardous or dangerous. So, it’s quite safe to obtain a sample.” He then smiled at Left Ear and said “ Alright, once you are done with the scan. Do you mind taking a sample and reporting our findings to the Commander?” Hunt asked as he was interested to see the technique for collecting samples. It was not dissimilar to a medical residency that the best way to learn was by doing stuff. Tags Left Ear to-Ennien Soft the rest of the away team [ Cadet Left Ear to-Ennien - Planetoid] Left Ear was quite capable of seeing in the slight luminescence on the ground and narrowed her eyes against the lights of the others. She flicked her ears in Hunt's direction to listen to the doctor's instructions, then nodded. ' Yes, sir,' she said as she pulled her scanner from its holster. The Sivaoan took a deep breath. It was a simple scan, really, but it felt like she had to get it right - the away team could be in danger if she messed up. She began scanning, turning in a slow circle as her device collected its data. When Left Ear was facing the direction she'd begun in, she called out, ' Commander, there are no life forms in our immediate vicinity, but about two hundred meters...that way...' She turned back about 90 degrees and pointed. ' There's a large concentration of carbon compounds. Looks like there might be a cavern.' After this, Left Ear put away her scanner and pulled out her medkit, which contained supplies for collecting various types of samples. This was not a new task. On Sivao, healers often still collected their own plants and herbs for medicines, though those that had apprentices would often have them do those types of tasks. Left Ear had done plenty of collecting for her mentor healer. She crouched, opened a vial, and used a tweezer-like implement to pluck a bit of fungi flesh. She dropped it inside the vial and capped it, then used a stylus to label it. Left Ear filled several more vials from different plants. [ Ensign Rin Zakir - Planetoid] The familiar pull of the transporter lightened it's grip as Zak materialised on the planetoid alongside the others. He didn't need telling twice to switch on his torch and already, he was on alert, a hand to his phaser as he visually scanned for any sign of threat. Only when he was sure of an all clear did he relax just a little, enough to try and make sense of their surroundings. Then again, that part was best left to the science team. All he had to do was orientate himself, follow orders and use his common sense. Oh, and not die. That would be good too. The orders soon came, Quinn tasking him and S'Riia with setting up the lights and pattern enhancers. Always good to start with securing the area, seeing as their transport site would also be acting as their main hub while exploring this impossible planetoid. "Yes sir", he confirmed the order, nodding to S'Riia as they got to work. "Right, let's get this light show on the road!", he spoke enthusiastically as he overheard more orders being given out. Yes, it would be good to know why they weren't wearing EVA suits, but as curious as he was, he had his own duties to perform. Not that he would do so at the expense of not keeping himself aware of his surroundings, so it was good to know that no life forms had been detected in the immediate vicinity.

[Felicity Ellis - Bridge, USS Mac]"Thank you, Ensign," Felicity responded to the update from the helm, her eyes naturally drawn toward the other woman's hand movements. She watched for a moment or two while Syl O'Connell fingered the jewellery hanging from her neck. Felicity herself had her own physical, unconscious quirks, like almost every human she knew; but she found that the specific actions gave a little glimpse into each individual. She wondered who had gifted the Flight officer that necklace. Her attention was pulled away by the sound of Niles acknowledging her, and then... was told to stand by. She stood, and turned on the spot to look over at the Tactical console, expression expectant, wondering if there was an issue with the transporter lock. That appeared to be the furthest from the actual problem, and her forehead creased into a frown when they learned of this alien power source. "Do it," she ordered, her curiosity piqued, but it was mixed with a healthy dose of concern. There had been no sign of any power sources, or anything like it, upon approach. What could this possibly be? What would it mean? "I want to know where its going. And put it on-screen, let's see if we can get a look at it."

[NPC - PO1 S'Riia - Planetoid] S'Riia's eyes adjust almost instantly after transport. She quickly scanned the room, her hand hovering over her phaser in its holster. As Lt. Commander Quinn called for them to turn on their torches, she did as was ordered, but again noticed no immediate threat. Not that she had been expecting one. The preliminary mission report stated that there had been no signs of life. That greatly diminished the threat assessment, but she had learned long ago that diminished wasn't zero. It didn't take long before additional orders were given. Most of the blue-collars go to their thing, while S'Riia and Ensign Rin were tasked with securing a beam-out locale. It could be used to transport any large samples they planned to take back to the ship, or bring in any large equipment they'd need for further research. The Bajoran officer seemed eager to get underway. Hopefully, this would be the highlight of their day, setting the pattern enhancers. "Yes, sir," she replied as she moved one of the enhancers into place. "Six meters, right?" She attempted to line up her enhancers opposite Rin's as they encircled the designated area.
[Lt. Commander Isaiah Quinn - Planetoid] The away team had spent the next fifteen minutes securing the area and collecting samples. And while they were hard at work, Quin found that they were still no closer to unraveling the mysteries of this planetoid. Shavan had reported that the oxygen and nitrogen levels were similar to what they were typically used to. Of course, there still wasn't any indication on how all that oxygen was produced. Miren had stated that the rock was too dense to get clear readings of the surfaces actual composition and that the Mac's sensors may be needed to penetrate them. There was also the mention of the a cavern nearby, where the temperature was elevated. The same cavern that Left Ear stated had higher concentrations of carbon. "That cavern is going to be our next stop," Quinn proclaimed. "Let's go." Quinn reached up and tapped his commbadge as he began to walk in the direction that Left Ear had mentioned. =A= "Quinn to Mac. The bedrock in our area appears to be too dense for the tricorders to penetrate. When possible, can you give us a breakdown of its composition. Quinn out." =A= There was no need to linger on the line for a full report. For now, they would just collect more data. It wasn't that long of a walk, but Quinn could easily fill the temperature rise as they reached the mouth of the cavern. "Rin, S'Riia, take point," Quinn ordered. "Shavan we'll bring up the rear." It was just a precautionary measure as the team proceeded into the cavern. The temperature increase was easily evident, easily some 25 degrees warmer. The ground itself became more soft. And there was more green. Large, leafy green plants were all around them. Growing as high as the cavern's ceiling almost, and large vines seemed to droop down from above also. It was almost a completely different environment than the one they'd just left. There were even blooms of flowers on some of the plants, that seemed quite familiar. Beyond that, there even appeared to be arthropods in this cavern. Some insect-like creatures were crawling on the leaves. There were even evidence of some creatures burrowing into the ground. In fact, the ground itself was clearly more fertile inside this cavern. It would spread on for almost a kilometer with no visible sign of variation. "What the hell is going on here?" Isaiah asked, rhetorically. He pulled out his own tricorder and began to scan the area. "Shavan, S'Riia and Hunt. Take this path to the east. It appears to arc and intersect with this other path about a half a klick from this position. Collect plant, insect and geo-samples along the way. Make note of anything out of the ordinary. The rest of us will meet you at the rendezvous."Quinn looked at the others that were left: Left Ear, Miren and Rin. "The rest of you are with me, same mission. Let's go." Quinn began to move in the general direction serving to guide them along what appeared like a path. There was definitely diminished growth along this "path."
[ Eastern Path ] Along the far arc of the path there are several mounds covered by this vine. The vine seems to sprout all over these mounds entirely. Yet, there is a single mound where a smooth surface, barely a tenth of a meter long is visible. The surface is smudged in dirt, but translucent if cleaned. It is brittle to the touch if too much pressure is applied to it.
[ Western Path ] About a quarter into the path, there are a series of stalks. They area paler green with faded blooms upon them. Vines spring from these stalks and spread across the path. At a glance, they appear to be withering, or even dead. They stretch on for a good ten meters along the path.

[ LT Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]{Quoted Posts} [Felicity Ellis - Bridge, USS Mac]"Thank you, Ensign," Felicity responded to the update from the helm, her eyes naturally drawn toward the other woman's hand movements. And put it on-screen, let's see if we can get a look at it." [ In orbit ] A small tetrahedronal satellite, the origin of the power source, slows and begins to match the orbital speed of the Mac. The reply from Tactical had been quick and crisp and immediately he turned his active sensors towards the unidentified power source, and as soon as he located it he started a constant track even as he put the device in question on the viewscreen, as ordered. And with it firmly in the Mac's sights, he now could actually focus the passive sensors towards it to try and gain as much information out of it as he could, in combination with the numerous active scans that were being performed as a matter of course when dealing with something thoroughly unexpected while sharing orbit around a planet. "The object appears to be roughly 1.5 meters in its largest axis and is it accelerating towards us on an intercept course." However, that report did not stand for long. The bloody thing was fast, to the point that there had been no time to actually plot its intended destination until it briefly settled at a distance of five kilometers, and then closing to a mere three. "Status change. The object has come to rest relative to us, three kilometers astern. I'm unable to scan past its outer hull and find anything about its internals, but I can tell you that the mass readings are a lot higher than expected for something that size, and while I can't get an idea of its true generating capabilities, its signature suggests more power density than I've ever seen."Being on thin ice and knowing he was but one mistake away from severe career repercussions was one thing. But at least, one Joshua Niles was certain that Commander Ellis would much prefer a 'I don't know' type of answer to him making something up. At least, it would be something to throw towards other people to deal with.

Continuous scans as he paced the perimeter revealed nothing that hadn't already been reported. Cerjess was grateful when the Commander decided to investigate the nearest cavern. He was certainly not disappointed when they arrived. When their lights lit up the interior of the cavern, revealing the drastic change in scenery from they had just left behind, the Trill stopped in his tracks, jaw dropped in shock and awe. He had heard of microecosystems like this before, but he'd never actually been in one. Tricorder scanning continuously, he walked over to one of the plants, watching in fascination as a tiny insect crawled along the leaf. It took him a moment to realize that the team had split up and were going down two different paths. Jogging a couple paces, he fell in step with Left Ear, his gaze still sweeping around to take in all there was to see. "This definitely explains the oxygen in the atmosphere..." he murmured to no one in particular. If there was one microecosystem on the planet, it stood to reason there would be others. He stopped at a particularly colorful plant and knelt down beside it with his tricorder. It didn't show to be harmful to skin, so he opened up his case and pulled out a vial, carefully removing a small sample from the plant and securing it safely. "Are we sure none of these are self-aware?" He asked Quinn a little teasingly, remembering the Commander had been part of the away team that brought back the plant that escaped its container in the lab a few months prior.

This place was...strange. She nodded slightly at Cerjess' comment, but added, ' They don't seem to be doing very well, though, do they? I wonder if something in the environment has changed recently.' Approaching one of the tendrils that spanned the path, Left Ear knealt to examine it. Her tail coiled slightly in amusement, though a small amount of trepidation entered her mind when the Trill mentioned self-awareness. Before taking a sample, she extended a claw and experimentally poked at the tendril, prepared to spring away if it moved. Left Ear froze with her claw on the plant when she heard the captain's words to Commander Quinn. Odd. If there were a lot of decaying bodies, she would have expected to smell it. [Lt Shavan Th’zhaar - Cavern, Eastern Path] The more he thought about it, the stranger this became… but maybe the cavern would reveal something else. Shavan nodded and brought up the rear, staying alert for anything. Maybe it was just a precaution, but given how past away missions had gone, he didn't want to take any chance of being caught unaware. Nothing happened, however, and they soon entered the cavern… which appeared far more full of life than the planetoid’s surface. “Yes sir,” he acknowledged the order to split up, following the eastern path behind S’Riia and Hunt. All the while his thoughts raced. They could spend all day collecting data, but when faced with any type of problem, simply asking questions wasn’t always enough; they needed to ask the right ones. If this planetoid shouldn’t be possible, then maybe it wasn’t. Could this environment be artificial somehow, or the result of terraforming? Shavan gripped the tricorder a little tighter as the dark path ahead started to feel more and more like a trap. And those vines… did vines simply tend to look like that everywhere, or were they somehow familiar? “Something about this still isn’t right.” Maybe he was wrong, but in this case it would be better to be too cautious than not enough. He began collecting more data on the area. “Dr. Hunt, if you take a sample and get some more data on these vines, I’ll try to get a better read on what’s under the mounds.” Maybe the softer soil here would allow their scans to penetrate deeper than they had on the surface. While the scan processed, he noticed the smooth surface on one, and crouched down to examine it. Jonathan Hunt Isaiah Quinn

[Planetoid] Hunt observed as Left Ear as she was labeling the vials. He kept looking to see if she would make any mistakes but was happy that she was labeling the samples that they would need to further studies on the ship. The planetoid itself was fascinating and the ability that it had life with no sun or energy source was equally fascinating. This source would be interesting to study and to study the evolution of life in this planetoid. Hunt then followed the Commander into the cavern. As he ententered the cavern he observed that the ground itself was moist. It would be interested to find out the composition of the ground as it wondered if they have found a potential source of water. As they finished their task he listened to the Commander as he gave an order. “ Yes, Sir” Hunt responded. It was clear that they would take the eastern approach. [Cavern Eastern Approach} Hunt headed in the approach and observed the vines. He listened to Shavan as he gave instructions. “ Agreed” he responded to his comment that something is not right. “Something about this place creeps me out. It’s almost like this planetoid has its own rules.” Hunt said. Energy source, the ground the complex ecosystem with a place that does not have a sun seems to be extremely strange. As they divided their task. Hunt approached the vines. He then took his sample kit to avoid possible cross-contamination of his own DNA. At first, he would approach the vine and observed it, and then with his tricorder, he would scan it to see the composition. He looked at the vines and the smooth mound. “R eminds me of Penicillin or the discovery of it. The vines appeared to be all over the place but that mound. I wonder what is repealing the vines. I doubt it was a coincidence” Hunt said. He approached the vines and fist scanned it to see if there was something there that was dangerous. If the scans would be clear, Hunt would slowly try to take a sample of the vine and place it inside the jar. He would then mark the vine, as he waited to see more information about the mounds. [ Ensign Rin Zakir - Planetoid - Western Path] "That's the one!", Zak confirmed as the petty officer double checked the required distance for the pattern enhancers. the caitian was someone else he hadn't had much interaction with, but she seemed competent enough. With them both on the job, the landing site would be secured in no time, which was probably just as well. The others seemed to be having some success with gathering samples, and had now turned their attention to the cavern that had been mentioned just moments ago. As he figured, that would be their next destination, and the two security officers took point as the others followed. Though he had pulled out his phaser so that he was on stand by, there didn't seem to be much to suggest that they would be in any real trouble any time soon. Although it was his job to expect the unexpected, and be ready for it, he hadn't expected the temperature to rise quite so rapidly, once inside the cave. Weren't caves usually colder? they weren't usually so much more abundant with life, their surroundings becoming greener as they pressed on. Their seemed to be some animal life here too, some kind of bugs, which he hoped weren't venomous in any way shape or form. Quinn wasn't the only one that was wondering what was going on, as this wasn't like anything he had seen before either. Splitting up would cover more ground faster, but there was always a risk in doing so. Still, he had his order and he nodded at S'Riia as she accompanied the team going east, while he headed in the opposite direction. While this place gave him the creeps, he would need to press on and just try to keep himself in check. The stalks and vines that lay ahead easily continued on for quite the distance, but they appeared to be withered and dying. This was quite the contrast to what they had witnessed earlier, so he wondered just what made this path so different. he at least attempted to take point once again, keeping an eye out for any trouble ahead as the rest of the team discussed their findings. It was then that they were informed that they were standing on 'a very large grave', and he briefly glanced to the ground. Not that he was expecting hoards of the undead any time soon, but the thought was rather unsettling. "Lovely", he muttered under his breath, as he then glanced toward the rest of the team. Generally speaking, he was more afraid of the living than the dead, but who was buried beneath their feet and why? As in why here, not why they were buried. Even he could figure that out!

[ SCPO Kaya Som | Engineering ]Engineering, as ever, was far from the bridge, and isolated from the most acute senses of the ship. The bridge dealt with immediate concerns, always looking forward. Engineering worked like a heart, striving for consistency. The bridge was sharp, but Engineering thrummed like a heartbeat. Data from the away team and other ship's sensors was pumped through the main computer in raw from with little context. The computer searched for patterns, categorized records, filtered out what was familiar from what was unexpected. Engineering watched it go by before it was instantaneously returned to the bridge. Kaya had ordered a read-out be projected to Engineering's large main screen; she stood back from it and watched with arms crossed. Then Commander Ellis's voice sang through. "Bridge to Engineering. An unidentified, pyramid-shaped object has matched our orbital speed and is currently three kilometres from our hull. The readings are unusual. Tactical is transferring the data reads to you now." said Commander Ellis. Kaya returned the order. "Looking into it, Commander." "Pull it up," she said moving in behind Djigo. "The readings from ops on the thing." "The object's hull is made of a material unknown to Starfleet's database," Yande said in her Senegalese accent. "But it has the properties of a complex metallic alloy."Kaya narrowed her eyes. "Those radiation signatures are weird. It's been in orbit for ... four thousand years? Ha-deh-zhi." After a bit more looking, Kaya figured she should report to the bridge sooner rather than later and send more details as they had them. "Engineering to the bridge. We're still trying to get our sensors past the object's hull. It's made of something we haven't seen before. And from what we can tell, this thing's been standing sentry above atmosphere level for nearly four thousand two hundred years. Can't say if it's a threat, yet." "So don't bloody shoot it down..." Kaya said under her breath after the channel closed, thinking of a certain zealous officer likely at the tactical station. Felicity Ellis

You're standing on a very large grave." =/\= [ SCPO Kaya Som | Engineering ]Engineering, as ever, was far from the bridge, and isolated from the most acute senses of the ship. [NPC - Crewman Ezra Mora - Engineering, USS Mac ] Ezra had followed Chief Som to get a peek at what was going on according to the data they were receiving. What he hadn't expected was to hear Commander Ellis calling down to say that they couldn't get the sensors to penetrate the hull of something that was practically right outside the ship. Yande was all over it, determining that the material wasn't in the Starfleet's database. "Let me get a look at that," Ezra said as he stood next to Yande looking at the readout. His brow furrowed slightly as he examined the readings. They couldn't penetrate that alloy, but they could study the alloy itself. As he studied the readings they could get, Ezra learned that it was old. Hearing that was even more confusing considering what he was seeing. He waited for Kaya to finish her communication with the Bridge before speaking up to get her attention. "Chief, metallurgic scans show that alloy has properties of elements we presently have no means of combining," Ezra reported. "I don't think I can tell you exactly what it's made of without an actual sample. But, even with a sample, I'm not sure I can figure out how it was produced in the first place."
[ In orbit ] Detecting the projections from the starship, protocols within the object were initiated. As those protocols began, the vertices of the tetrahedron satellite began to glow, and it seemed as if in unison, currents were sent to the apex for a single flash. For a few moments, there was nothing... and then... ... chaos! On every deck, what sounded like a grinding, ear-piercing screech began to sound on every deck, modulating it pitch throughout the ship's PA system. At the same time, the lights on every deck, including on the computer panels began to flash, flickering in and out.
