[ T’Laara - ?] A sudden voice spoke near her, and T’Laara instantly turned towards it, narrowing her eyes against the light. The whole world seemed to grow brighter at that moment, so much that it was impossible to see clearly into the blinding sun. Two things she could tell: it was not a tangible person, and so far, it was the only notable change in the barren landscape. She ignored its question the same way she ignored the implications of being lost. “What are you?”Thea Baker

[[NPC] Dr. Floren Rafa, civilian physician & Ensign Ic Arbrell — Sickbay, Front Ear] As easily as a few taps of a finger on the bed panel, Enola’s scan began. Rafa watched the data screen working, his old knowledge spun into jargon and numbers, while Paawin inquired of the plant. He was uncertain whether he felt lucky or useless; there was no way he’d have been able to handle that thing and a patient and himself at the same time. And yet, even knowing he couldn’t, Rafa felt as if he should have taken point on it. He’d always been the master herbalist before. But this was... He released a tension-bound breath as the scan completed, and deactivated the machine to free the patient from the bed if she chose. Her little friend likely needed the comfort. Or at the very least, a distraction. After his freedom from the neural scanner, the Betazoid leapt from the bed and backed against the wall. Rafa could see the desperate thoughts circling a damaged mind, rapid eyes flicking through thought and memory as easily as wet pages of a book. “Can’t you trigger psilosynine production yet? Synthesize it?” It came as an outburst, which for Ic was not uncommon, but this was a far cry from the ensign’s usual inspirations. It stumbled, as if remembering and forgetting itself in turn as it moved from start to finish. His voice took on an edge with every next word. “I know it can be suppressed because they’ve tried it on me hundreds of times as if it was going to help as if it did anything well now it’s doing something so why can’t you bring it back please bring it back—”The alarm sounded, and Ic recoiled from it totally, wincing. When Dr. Paawin disabled it, a trembling white hand reached blindly for Enola’s, finding her through struggling instinct alone. “It’s not that simple,” a nonplussed Dr. Floren answered once the room quieted. “There are several known others impacted, indicating we have a much bigger issue at hand. I think we need to monitor before attempting to tamper, unpleasant as it may be, otherwise we won’t know what’s happening to you all, hm? Dr. Paawin, what do you read from the plant?”“Unique,” Ic gasped, trying to feel out the faintest of green in a mind barren of its pseudo-endemic influence, absent of every sensation he understood. He couldn’t feel it. He couldn’t hear anything through the thickness of silence, even trying in his mind; just the same collapsing thought. Silence, but his body remembered vines, tight, cold— “Is it okay? Are any of us okay?”Rafa glanced at his colleague as if to ask whether the risk of a sedative was appropriate. They likely didn’t have much time before more began to arrive. He counted the empty beds.

[Ensign Enola - Sickbay]
When the doctor finished the necessary tests, Enola straightened up, not directly, but still, and grabbed her temples first to knead them. The dizziness had worsened with getting up, though it improved with time. This was probably the first time she was glad about her Romulan heritage, and hoped it would become more prominent. She exchanged another glance with the Bajoran. "Would you please inform me about the test results?" she said. It was actually a matter of course, but nevertheless she wanted to have it especially mentioned here. Then she turned her gaze to Ic and saw that he had already jumped out of the biobed, and she hurried in his direction. However, she always kept her hand on something that could support her in case of emergency. Even though it didn't really feel necessary to her, it was a safety measure, so it wouldn't send her crashing to the floor. She did hear Ic's request to the doctor, but did not make it a priority. The doctor would take care of it, and she would continue to be an intelligence officer. It was no real wonder to her that he reacted so emotionally in this situation, even if it was absolutely illogical. When the Betazoid extended his trembling hand in her direction, Enola didn't hesitate long and took his tightly in hers. Her grip was firm and unyielding, though she held it so that he could withdraw his hand if he so chose. When he addressed Unique (was that the name of the plant? Probably so), she loosened his hand a bit. When he asked if anyone was okay in here, she made no comment. It would probably worry him a lot, so she left the incredible pleasure of answering that question to the doctors. Finally, she slowly let go of his hand again, but still held hers at a distance that he could take it again if he felt like it.

[Ensign Evorís - Operations, Front Ear] “Acknowledged,” he said, deadened fingers drifting over the controls. He ran an analysis of the biosignatures within the sickbay— Vulcan, Bajoran, Betazoid, Romulan, and... something else that the system couldn’t quite pinpoint. By the scans, it seemed to be some form of... plantlife? Unusual for it to register as a sentient lifeform on the scanners, but as no reports of it had come in from the sickbay, he logged it away as an unrelated research experiment. Motion to his right blurred an instant too late, and the noise that followed stung ehrie against the inside of his skull. Evorís pressed his hand against the console’s perimeter for a second time, all movement coming to a halt as he fought off the flash behind his eyes. It only lasted a moment before he adjusted to the alert, but suddenly the weight of his shoulders seemed more difficult to bear, and Evorís found himself grateful for the chair beneath him. He’d only just readjusted his posture and began to continue the configuration process when another comm signal came in, originating from the same location as the Vulcan victim. Evorís frowned, and considered the possibility that the location— or perhaps the Promenade as a whole— was at the center of this apparent illness. (But then why was he feeling it, too, several decks above?) =A= “Acknowledged,” =A= he responded, before immediately switching his comm signal to the Sickbay. =A= “Ensign Evorís to Sickbay, standby for transport of Leanna Mazal to a biobed.” =A=Closing the channel, Evorís scanned the vicinity of the original comm signal, picking up several life signs in the surrounding area. A quick analysis determined that most were human, moving in and out of the signal, though one of note was an adult Betazoid, unmoving. It was easy to deduce that this was the intended patient. Evorís locked onto the signal and announced, “Energizing,” before beaming the presumably unconscious woman to a cleared biobed in the deck below. The list filtered through his head again, and the result moved with his numb fingers— Betazoid, Vulcan... Romulan? A few alterations accommodated the new parameters of their assignment, and Evorís nodded to Crewman Bremmer to indicate that the system was ready for her to initiate the sweep. He would adjust it as results came in. He could only hope that a solution was found before his usefulness was expended.

[Operations - Command Deck] Thea suspected that the orders that she had given Bremmer were likely unexpected, but considering the circumstances thar they now faced, it was a case of just do it. People might be taken out of their comfort zones but when it came to an emergency, that had to be put aside, especially when your CO needed you. Her eyes followed the Crewman as she took up residence at one of the consoles, not doubting her for even a second as she succeeded in activating the radiation drill. With that done, they could now focus on helping those who might have been affected in a similar way to the others currently in Sickbay and to some degree Ensign Evoris too. Thea might be wrong but she had an inkling considering everything she had seen so far. Although he was handling his orders efficiently enough as he acknowledged her, then arranged for Leanna to be sent to Sickbay. That particular call was a surprise in some respects, especially Riyo's reaction to his loved one being affected. Yet Thea knew that he would do his job and it wasn't long before a console pinged and alerted her to the information that Riyo had mentioned. " Excellent work, Crewman and Ensign, continue working together until we can pinpoint any stragglers and others who may not be able to respond. I'll be right here, looking over the data from Sickbay".Moving over to the console that had pinged, Thea sat down and activated her log in. Then pulling up the data files from Sickbay, she settled down to acknowledge receipt and to study them.

[Jov] There was no one to protect her, no parents, friends or loved ones, only terror until it could catch her in its grip. But there was no fun if it caught her now, unlike the weak Betazoid who didn't put up much of a fight in the end. That was all a part of this game and as Jovireh began to fruitlessly search the empty corridor and asked it to show itself in the Romulan tongue. The shadow loomed closer but only for a second before retreating out of sight. " Only when the time is right, so run little girl see if you can find your parents or.... well that would spoil the surprise".To entice the Romulan/Betazoid further, her name began to echo all around her as her parents called out to her. [T'Laara] This one appeared to a bit more feisty as she dared to ignore what was said, in favour of asking what it was. " All in good time Dearie, it's too soon for you to find that out, so I suggest that you admit that you're lost or....".It had paused on purpose as it moved closer to T'Laara, deciding to show her what would happen if she didn't comply. Long black like tendrils shot out from the middle of the shadowy form, wrapping themselves around the Vulcan tightly.

[Lt. Paawin Riyo - Front Ear - Sickbay]Riyo was grateful when Dr. Floren took over comforting the Betazoid... as it took him way too long to figure out what the younger man was asking for. Telepaths really weren't his specialty... though after today he was doing to do what he could to change that. Normally he would have sedated Ic the moment he started panicking, but until he heard back from Thea he didn't want to risk not being able to wake up him again. "The plant seems fine," he spoke reassuringly when that question came up. He really had no idea what he was looking at when he double-checked the tricorder, but no alerts were coming up, and it still seemed to be fully aware... "As for the rest of you, we've figured out there's something shutting down the paracortex in your brain. That's why your psionic abilities aren't working right. But I sent the information to Dr. - Captain Baker, and the three of us are going to figure out how to fix it and get you all better." He normally didn't make sure promises, but this really didn't seem like the sort of illness or injury that left permanent damage. At least, he really hoped it wasn't... When he heard the transporter delivering Leanna, he turned towards her, and paled slightly when he realized he couldn't even feel her. Knowing she was affected and unconscious had not prepared him for the empty hollow echo that replaced the feel of her mind in his whenever they were in the same room. "Lea!" Everyone else momentarily forgotten, he rushed to her side, grabbing her hand and releasing a small sigh of relief when he could see her steady breath. His other hand stroked the hair away from her face, praying that she would open her eyes. "Come on, Imzadi... Come back to me..."

[Somewhere...] To be locked up in some weird steel cage taunted by some equally weird yet terrifying shadow creature was bad enough. However that was nothing compared to finding herself unable to speak or even make a sound. Leanna needed answers, to try and figure out what to do next, to escape and find her way back to her family but she couldn't even yell or do anything other than shake the bars in frustration. " That's it... use that fear because you're mine and I do enjoy having a pet" it taunted with glee, until Leanna looked at it, refusing to do what it asked. " You will comply..." it paused as it heard the one called Riyo speak to her, willing her to come back to him. " Especially if you want to see Riyo and... ah yes your children again". Leanna stopped rattling the cage, frozen at the threat before retreating further into her prison. ********************* If Riyo was to look further, he would see that Leanna's and the other victims eyes, had become black as night.

[PO1 Jovireh Velal - Dreamland - Ghost Ship]Fear clawed at her throat like icy fingers, silencing her voice while the others echoed around her. Jovireh tried to find them, but every direction she turned they only sounded farther and farther away. She also couldn't shake the growing feeling that she was trapped somewhere she wasn't supposed to be. But that couldn't be right... This was her home. She just needed to find the others, and everything would be alright. But where were they? Jovireh called out again, but they did not respond, just continued to whisper her name in far away voices.

[ T’Laara - ?] Black spots danced across her vision as T’Laara stared against the sun. The voice spoke again; whatever it was, it was clearly not here to guide her. She blinked, but the blackness did not go away, only transformed. Out of thin air, shadowy tendrils struck out towards her. She drew in a sharp breath, unable to move before they had taken hold. She struggled in their grip, clenching her jaw as she fought to maintain her impassive composure. “Why are you here?” Twisting, she threw all of her strength into throwing them off and getting away. “Let go.”There was no one else around to help. Nothing but her and this impossible thing in a barren world. But she would figure out what this was, and she would get out of here.... she had to. Thea Baker

[Operations] So far the evacuation of the most populated areas was going smoothly and everyone was moving towards the shelters without incident. This was mainly down to Security, business owners and other designated drill marshalls, ensuring calm not to mention the residents who were used to drills and emergency situations. Reports were also coming in of people showing up in the public clinic and both secondary and tertiary sickbays. This would make things easier for those in Ops as they could now focus on those who hadn't shown up or hadn't reported in to the shelters. However it seemed as though that moment of relative calm wasn't to last for long. The reason for that soon made itself known, especially when a distress call was received and broadcasted to Ops in it's entirety. =/\=.... help me.... I'm being chased by shadows.... The comm cut off as the shadow creature claimed it's first soul. It's strength from feeding off it's three unconscious victims and silencing the abilities of countless others, had increased to the point where it could now be seen by those who were unfortunate to come across it. *************** [Jovireh] " Aw don't they love you Jovireh or are you simply to weak to find them?" the Shadow taunted, absorbing every drop of fear that Jovireh produced. Of course it was pleased by her attempts to follow and find the voices, but it wasn't about to praise her or make it any easier. Where was the fun in that?, especially after adding another soul to the feast. No it was time to make this even more interesting as it began to take on another form. " Jovireh, I'm here" It called out as it completed the transformation into Devra. Allowing Jovireh to see her mother up ahead, before disappearing behind a door. [T'Laara] The Shadow cackled wickedly as the Vulcan struggled against the binds. Although the more she fought and tried to escape, the tighter they got and for now it ignored her questions and request to be let go. Besides why should it as it was literally squeezing the life out of her or so it let her think that, before it shrunk down and faced her. " Why do you think that I'm here, Dearie?, also give me a good reason why I should let you go?"

[ Cwm Eliska Bremmer - Ops - Front Ear Station ]In theory, working a Security panel was required of anyone who graduated from Starfleet's Security training program. But that didn't mean it was second-nature by a long shot. But, it would seem she'd done the right thing, and at least the computer was handling the various individuals and sections reporting in, using something not unlike a spreadsheet to indicate who had checked in, and how long it had taken for them to do so. However, the various individuals who had specific duties were checking in; the various shelter stations were coming online, and some started reporting personnel walking in through their doors. Things were actually working, and while evacuation marshals and individuals whose job was to get their own people moving were doing their thing, Security details, hardy souls who had donned EVA suits fitted with additional radiation shielding even for the purpose of a mere drills started moving towards pre-arranged points to begin their sweeps. Now, a room-to-room sweep was mandated by the radiation alert protocols as it was envisioned internal sensors may be malfunctioning and there was a need to ensure as many people as possible were rounded up; but in this case as within a few minutes the primary exodus would be complete, it would be easy enough to track down folk who weren't in a position to help themselves, or had decided to disregard the drill. As for the latter, no matter whether they were Starfleet, civilians or even foreign service visitors, it would prove to be very unpleasant for them comes the hot wash when their voluntary failure to heed emergency drills would be brought up. Though, when the Vulcan Ensign mentioned helping locate any and all various lost little lambs with internal sensors, he'd just hit on what had been Eliska's notion from the start. "That's pretty much what I was thinking, Mister Evoris, Sir," she said from where she stood. And then, a call came in, a distressed voice calling for help, being chased by... shadows? However, the voice at the far end of the transmission cut off abruptly, but the channel remained open. There really could only be one reason for that. And she knew that while she could pinpoint the location of the call, her lack of familiarity with technical and computer operations tasks would take far too long. "Sir, can you see where that came from?" While she was indeed requesting an officer's help, her tone was hardly that of a supplicant; a job needed doing, and she just knew she was too damn slow to make it work in time... and when she looked up, her eyes spoke volumes about her not feeling entirely adequate to the task, and that she was struggling not to bolt for the turbolift phaser drawn. Fighting in the corridors, that she could do, and do damn well at that.

[[NPC] Dr. Floren Rafa, civilian physician & Ensign Ic Arbrell — Sickbay, Front Ear] Involuntarily deferring on the matter of analysis, but in a way grateful for it, Rafa glanced at Enola to assess whether she was satisfied with that answer. He certainly wasn’t; it felt too soon to divulge what he felt was incomplete (with a panicking patient in potential earshot, especially). Granted, he was still inexperienced in modern, secular patient relations, but Rafa would never have told a patient something that sounded fatal, not knowing if it was. At least the bad news wasn’t his responsibility anymore. But before he could get any proper interpersonal analysis— he wasn’t sure what he was expecting from a Vulcan patient— the next anticipated patient materialized, unconscious. Naturally, Paawin was quick to her side. More priest than doctor now, Rafa refrained from intruding on the importance of that moment to him just yet. “Wait, our brains are shutting down?”Oh, so the boy had heard. Here it comes— “No,” Ic protested, and again with a jerk of his body as he backed away from Floren preparing a hypospray. “It can’t be. I’m not letting it. I’m not going to be alone like this, I can’t be alone, I need to—”“What you need is to take a seat,” said Rafa after discharging a small dose of antihistamine into the Betazoid’s neck. “This is an ancient remedy, it will just take the edge off. Uraka, breathe, in the meantime.” He nodded to Enola that he would return to her after checking the most recent patient. Ic, meanwhile, had taken to all but clinging to his fellow ensign, calmed now but for his breathing. “What are you thinking, Enola?” he asked, looking up at her with solid black eyes, feeling heavy. “Dr. Paawin, if you don’t mind,” Rafa murmured when he approached them, indicating to his colleague that he had initiated a quick tricorder scan. He anticipated that it might be prudent to take preliminary bio data while Paawin took the time he needed at her side, which was in the way of the neural scanner, but this was fine. It was unlikely that they would find any new abnormalit— Well, this was interesting. “Doctor, I’ll need to ask you to step away so we can perform a more intensive scan. Your imzadi seems to be suffering for two.” At least.

[Ensign Enola - Sickbay]
Enola would have been happy to bang her head against the edge of a table when Ic started to panic again. And accordingly she was glad when the doctor injected Ic something. She didn't really know what to think of the Bajoran. He was kind of interesting and seemed to be the calmest one in here, while he seemed to be troubled in a certain way. A strange mixture without logic. When Ic came over to her again, she didn't show any particular reaction, but already adjusted to the fact that he would take her hand again immediately. Instead of taking her hand, the Betazoid clung to her, and she didn't really know what to do for a moment. A normal reaction of a Vulcan would have been to push him away. But adapted to the situation, she had to react a bit more as Romulans would do. Either kill him or calm him down. The latter was clearly preferable to the former and she pressed him a little more against her while gently stroking his shoulder with her hand. She didn't stop when he asked her something. What was she thinking about at the moment? Good question. Actually, she wasn't thinking about anything at the moment. At least nothing important or worth mentioning. "I'm thinking about what's happening here right now and trying to focus on staying logical. What are you thinking, Ic?" she replied after a while, somehow grateful that the 'remedy' seemed to be working on him.

[Ensign Evorís - Operations, Front Ear] The radiation drill seemed to be proceeding fairly efficiently, though already Evorís could detect the discrepancies between telepathic and non-telepathic station inhabitants. A quick analysis of station demographics clearly indicated that a fewer percentage of Betazoid and Vulcan residents were reporting to their stations within expected timeframe, though it was still too early to determine who was in need of transport. He didn’t have to wait much longer to find out, however, as a distress signal suddenly sputtered to life over the Operations speakers. Evorís followed suit, pushing through his protesting limbs and blurring eyes to locate the source of the message. His fingers flew across the screen, and he could barely feel them. He’d just managed to determine the origin of the signal, and scan for life forms, when— Silence. The life sign on his console blinked away as though it’d never been there in the first place. It was clear now: whatever was affecting the station was much more serious than he’d initially suspected. “Signal originated from a public intercom system on Deck 15. Transferring exact coordinates to your console now, Crewman. Last detected biosignature was an adult Betazoid.” He glanced at Bremmer, the apprehension in his eyes disguised by the blackness that had claimed his scleras. “There’s nothing now.”
