[ Saya and family - Beach] The Domen-Ozus accepted their plates with varying levels of thanks, Evekh not giving his until he got a nudge from Saya. Meanwhile, Kyo gave Anna a mock severe look when she gave Evekh contradictory directions. He'd have to keep an eye on the boy. Evekh knew better than to feed the animals from the table, but there was always a certain amount of messiness that couldn't be helped and 'forgetting'. Evekh dug in enthusiastically, ignoring the older people as they started talking about something boring. Saya finished chewing her first bite of veggies before shaking her head in response to Judy's question. ' Not a chance,' she answered with conviction. ' They may have pushed me into leadership but they will never get me to become an officer. Even in this liaison position I feel like I can still do some actual work and not just shuffle papers.' This last was said in a slightly teasing tone. While she'd always done what was necessary as the chief engineer, Saya had never kept quiet about her dislike of the paperwork. Tag Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD, Max Williams, & Anna E. Williams - Beach, LZ-2]"Now, now, show a little bit of respect for paperwork. I'm told every form has its own personality," Max responded to Saya, with words and tone that were unmistakably teasing Judy. "I don't think it's about the paperwork. I think you just like the sound of 'Chief Ozu'," Judy teased back. "Not that I blame you."
"As opposed to 'Captain Eastman', which as we all know sounds boring and lame," Anna added her own sarcastic two cents.
Bridge walked around the table, as though patrolling, searching for the first food crumb. It was his specialty, after all.

[ Saya and Family - Beach] ' If that personality is boring and tedious,' Saya muttered with a raised eyebrow. Kyo snorted and choked on a piece of meat, having to take a gulp of water to wash it down. When he'd cleared his throat he said, ' You're right, Judy. Ensign Ozu, Lt. Ozu, Commander Ozu - none of them sound quite right.
But Chief Ozu is perfect, and so is Captain Eastman,' he added diplomatically. Evekh made the first food drop of the meal, losing a chunk of chicken on its way to his mouth. He stared down at it and wrinkled his nose but didn't say anything since the adults were all busy talking. He made it to his mouth on the second try. Tag Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD, Max Williams, & Anna E. Williams - Beach, LZ-2]"Commander Eastman was fine too. Felt like a comfortable old shoe, after 10-plus years," Judy replied. There was some truth to that. Judy hadn't sought this promotion for her own good, but for the good of the crew, and had the circumstances been different, she would've been content to stay on as First Officer. "Captain Ozu, though... now that would be something," Max joked. Anna noticed Evekh losing a chunk of meat, and watched as Bridge helped himself to it. Now, the dog sat up behind the small child, tongue sticking out, waiting for more.

[ Saya and Family - Beach] ' Prophets, no,' Saya retorted, rolling her eyes. ' Running engineering was more than I ever wanted. I would have been content to continue as a regular engineer for my entire career. I always preferred to be working on the computers rather than working on the computer.' Kyo chuckled, very familiar with Saya's feelings about doing paperwork. On days where she'd spent her entire shift doing paperwork, she'd come home in a sour mood. He'd learned to give her a little time to decompress, other than an initial greeting, before going into their ritual of sharing their days. Alieth plopped down next to Bridge, ready to race him for dropped veggies. Tag Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD, Max Williams, & Anna E. Williams - Beach, LZ-2]Judy chuckled. "Let's see what tune you're singing when you hit 65," she teased, intent on getting the last word. "I don't think Saya will be in Starfleet at that point," Anna pitched in, entirely serious. "40 years of the same job is a long time.""If not Starfleet, then what next?" Max asked. He had the same conversation with Judy sometimes, even as she insisted she wasn't anywhere near retirement.

[ Saya and Family - Beach] Kyo looked at Saya with a raised eyebrow. As far as he knew, Saya had no plans to leave Starfleet, but she could surprise him. Saya was shaking her head, though. Echoing Kyo's thoughts, she said, ' I have no intention of leaving Starfleet now or even in forty years. Engineering is a wonderful field because there is always new technology to learn, new things to build, new computer programs, new challenges. I don't think I'll ever tire of it. My focus may change at some point. I could choose to return to a more active position someday.' She shrugged. ' For now, this liaison position allows me more time with Kyo and Evekh, which I never had enough of when I was chief engineer. I have more time for music and other hobbies as well, and Kyo will be able to spend more time focusing on his compositions. If I were to ever leave Starfleet, I would perhaps go into private tinkering or computer work of some kind.' Kyo grinned. ' It's definitely been nice having her around more. It's been good for all of us.' Evekh had heard his name and glanced up, but realized that the adults were still talking about boring things. Since they were distracted, he slipped a bit of veg from his fork and down by his leg, knowing Alieth would be happy to take the offending food item from him. Tag Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD, Max Williams, & Anna E. Williams - Beach, LZ-2]"I think humans are just naturally a more fickle lot," Max replied. "We have to keep moving, and Judy most of all."He then felt a gentle kick under the table, from a foot that was definitely Judy's. "It's true!""I'm not that flighty," she protested aloud, though in good humor. "I could do with more family time, but I'm not in a rush to clear the center chair. I might just outlast all of you."Max was ready for Judy to clear that chair, and all the dangers involved, but he wasn't in a rush either. Her time would come in due course.

[ Saya and Family - Beach] ' I must say that I can't imagine you not being in command in some capacity.' Saya had worked with Judy for many years with the older woman nearly always being above her in the chain of command, whether directly or indirectly. Judy had been very much a surrogate mother to Saya. She tried not to think too hard about the fact that she would lose Judy far sooner than she cared to contemplate, though the older woman could still have many, many more years. '[ I hadn't really noticed that about Humans,' Kyo said. ' But maybe that's because most of the Humans I knew before were professional musicians. You don't get to that level without having done it your whole life. Though I guess it's not one you can necessarily do your whole life. I did meet a man once who was a hundred years old and had been playing bassoon for ninety-three of those years. He was the best I ever heard.' ' Oh, yes,' Saya said enthusiastically. ' Kyo has played me some of his music, and it is...You don't think of the bassoon as being an instrument to evoke strong emotions on its own, but he did it somehow.' She shivered slightly at the memory. Tag Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD, Max Williams, & Anna E. Williams - Beach, LZ-2]"Continuity vs. change. You play the same instrument, but not always in the same ensemble, the same repertoire, and so on," Judy replied. "You're a bit flightier than that," Max pointed out. "You all know Judy wasn't even thinking of command when we met.""Dad keeps describing this woman he met, and I have a hard time believing that was my mom," Anna pointed out. "I guess that makes her inconsistent."

[ Saya and Family - Beach] ' Okay, that's fair,' Kyo acknowledged with a laugh. ' Even though I'd always dreamed of composing full time, I never really expected it to actually happen.' ' I certainly never had any intention of being chief engineer,' Saya said. ' I'm afraid I thought my CO was joking when it first came up.
'And you may not have been thinking of command, Judy, but it was always in your makeup,' she added. ' So we're all inconsistent,' Kyo said with a laugh. ' What about you, Max? What big changes have you made in your life? Or are you contemplating anything now?' His tone was light and teasing. Tag Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD, Max Williams & Anna E. Williams - Beach, LZ-2]"I wasn't always surrounded by blondes," Max joked, alluding to his wife and daughter, and many of his grandchildren. "I've worked kitchens all over the Federation. The menus, the venues, and the clientele are always changing," he continued, in a more serious vein. "Publishing cookbooks is a very different product, but it's really not such a different work process, since I'm not the one that has to edit it."Max had, he believed, chosen the perfect occupation for himself, one where there was just enough change.

[ Saya and Family - Beach] Evekh had been sneaking bits of veg to Alieth while the adults were distracted with their conversation, but he was a bit too slow finally and the three-horn let out one of her dying-goose cries, calling Saya and Kyo's attention to what their son was up to. ' Evekh,' Saya said. Her tone wasn't sharp, but it was that mom tone that said she meant business. The raised eyebrow and compressed lips made Evekh duck his head, though he wasn't really upset by being caught. It was one of the few behaviors that they went round and round on without anything really changing. Alieth honked again, causing Saya to switch her attention to their pet and say, ' No! You've had plenty.' The three-horn let out a defiant cry, louder than before, but waddled away from the table, turning her back and throwing herself down to wallow in the sand. Kyo caught his son's attention with a small wave and said, ' Evekh, you remember what we told you before? It's not good for Alieth to have a lot of extra food outside of her mealtimes. The vet said she was getting too fat, and that's not healthy for her. I promise you that she gets plenty of food at her meals, and she can have treats sometimes, but feeding her from the table encourages bad behavior.' Evekh looked down again and nodded glumly. He did sort of remember that conversation now. ' I forgot,' he said quietly. ' It's okay to forget sometimes. We're here to remind you.' Saya had to stop herself from going further than that. She wouldn't have necessarily punished Evekh, but she might have been harsher in reminding him that he needed to remember when he was given instructions. It was often difficult to find a balance between her more rigid parenting style and Kyo's more flexible ways. He wasn't overly permissive, but he didn't fuss over small things the way Saya had a tendency to do. Tag Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD, Max Williams, & Anna E. Williams - Beach, LZ-2]The Williamses kept quiet, staying out of the way of Saya and Kyo's parenting. Judy and Max had learned, with their own grandchildren, not to stick their noses in where they didn't belong (which is not to say Judy was good at this in practice), and Anna knew that until and unless she raised a few children of her own, no one would take her very correct opinions on parenting seriously. Once the topic settled down, Judy piped up. "It's just like people. If you have too much candy, you'll get fat," she explained, looking down at her own midsection. "If I ate as much candy as I wanted, I wouldn't look like this."Judy had tried to live by this principle (i.e. not eating many of the pastries she offered to others) for most of her life, but never more so than after the heart replacement. Her waistline spoke to that.
While Max nodded along, evidently agreeing with Judy's point and the example she'd chosen, Anna eyed the rather tubby corgis.

[ Saya and Family - Beach] ' I was giving her vegetables,' Evekh said, understandably defensively, in a four-year-old's mind. Kyo covered his mouth and gave Judy a raised eyebrow look as if to ask what response she had to that. Saya had to compress her lips and look away to hide a surprised burst of laughter. Her son had a point. Once she'd gotten herself under control, Saya said, ' Sometimes it's not just what you feed her, though that is important, but when. In this case, while vegetables are an appropriate food for Alieth, feeding them to her from the table is not appropriate. I know it's fun to slip her food, and it doesn't seem harmful, but eventually it can undo her training and cause her to act inappropriately at other times. If she won't listen to us, we won't be able to bring her on trips like this, and you wouldn't want her to have to stay in our quarters while we come to Kerelia to have fun, would you?' ' No, Mama,' Evekh answered. ' I want Alieth to have fun, too.' ' Good, then after we finish eating, you can help me prepare her food.' ' Yay!' Evekh yelled, bouncing. Saya decided not to address his yelling at the table. Tag Judith Eastman
