[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - Colony]"That's interesting. Makes sense though." Zoology had never been Syl's strong suit. She loved animals and found them fascinating, but there was so much to learn and remember. Science of any sort had always been a source of confusion for her. "I can imagine they feel like kids in a candy store." That was certainly how she would feel if she was tasked with test flying a fleet of brand new ships, which was the closest comparison she could think of.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - LZ-2]"That's exactly right," Judy confirmed. The scientists - biologists in particular - were quite pleased. "Personally, my expertise is more in the built environment, but I try to keep up with the biologists."It wasn't exactly a secret that Judy had taken a strong personal and professional interest in the colony's planning and construction. She was, after all, still a licensed professional engineer.

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - Colony]"It's a unique experience, being part of something so big from the very beginning." Part if her envied those who were there from the start. But Syl had arrived on the station while the colony was still in the development stages, so she knew she hadn't missed too much. In her mind, though, the exploration and charting of the planet would have been the best part. Perhaps she could still set a record climbing a mountain somewhere.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - LZ-2]"That it is."The trail, a gentle path by any measure, reached a modest creek, at most two feet across, very shallow, with only a gentle current. "We'll have to ford this little creek here," Judy commented. "One of the disadvantages - or advantages - of an undeveloped world."She crossed it with one large step.

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - Trail]Syl grinned as she watched the water trickling over the rocks. "Oh no. How ever are we going to make it?" Her voice was dripping with sarcasm, a hint of her dry sense of humor slipping to the surface. Then she followed suit with a large step to the other side. It was a nice and easy walk, for which she was grateful. And she definitely enjoyed the fresh air and the view as they walked. "So where are we headed?"

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - LZ-2]Judy chuckled at Syl's sarcasm, feeling the proverbial ice melting just a little bit. "There's a small cave system at the end of the trail, with interesting mineral formations," she explained. "Max and I were actually the first to discover it - we were just lying in the grass, and suddenly noticed what looked to be a little hole in the rock face near us."How the couple ended up in a horizontal position in the grass was intentionally left ambiguous.

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - Trail]Her smile brightened a little more at the description of their destination. "Caves are always fun to explore," she admitted. "It was always one of my favorite parts about survival training." The adventurous pilot had always been one of the few in her class that loved every moment of said training. Although there were quite a few reasons for that, and not all of them had to do with the wilderness.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - LZ-2]"There's definitely an inherent sense of mystery to caves," Judy agreed. "They're inherently unknown, and at once promising and dangerous. That's just a winning formula."Perhaps it was human nature, or the way Starfleet officers were already curious exploring types, but there it was. "Tell me, do they still have extra sessions of survival training for pilots, like they did back in the day?"

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - Trail]Syl nodded, both agreeing with the statement about caves, and confirming the question. "Yeah. Guess they want to make sure if we're the sole survivor of a shuttle crash we won't need someone else to find us food and shelter." It had been a running joke with her classmates. In space, the lives of the entire crew were in their hands. But on the ground... They were perhaps the least useful person in an emergency. It was a feeling she had experienced first hand when Serenity was attacked.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - LZ-2]"You're also pretty much guaranteed to be present if something does happen. The average science or engineering officer only goes on a couple of away missions every year."There was an actual statistic - Judy had learned it at some point, but had since forgotten. "Then again, all the fleet curricula have changed quite a bit, after Wolf 359 and especially after the War."

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - Trail]"That is also very true," she agreed with both of the statements. While she hadn't attended the Academy until after the Dominion War, everyone in her family had been in service long enough to experience the changes. It was after the Battle of Wolf 359 that her mother's work in the R&D department turned to creating shields that could better defend against modulating weapons. Her father came out of retirement to serve on the front lines in the War. Her siblings had either been in the Academy, or just recently graduated, by the time the War ended. Their memories were still fresh enough to point out the differences between what they had been taught, and she was being taught. "One of the changes is that they now have more required combat flight simulations, pairing potential pilots with tactical students. It's designed to improve how well we work together."

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Kerelia]"That's definitely for the better. We had to pick up those things on the fly, during the war."Starfleet had, despite its earlier preparations, gone into the War very much with its pants down. As the trail went on ahead, it curved slightly to the left, and a rock face began to come into view.

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - Trail]Syl nodded solemnly. She had heard horror stories of what happened when people didn't know how to work together. It was a shame they had added those lessons to the standard curriculum too late for many. "It's not perfect now. There's a lot that can't be taught in simulations, and there's a lot that still depends on the orders we're given. But I can say we're at least better prepared than those before us." She had been intending on suggesting revisiting those simulations with the Mac's tactical officer... but after what she saw on Kerelia during the Bajoran festival, she wasn't all too keen on being alone in a room with Lieutenant Niles. She'd had enough power-obsessed men in her life, she didn't need to willingly subject herself to another.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Trail]"You know, if there's anything you think we should implement here, something we should be preparing you for, you can bring that up with Felicity... I mean Commander Ellis."They were all reform-minded, never afraid to change the way they did drills or anything else, but Judy had a feeling this was the kind of thing Felicity would enjoy implementing.

[Lt. JG Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - Colony]Syl paused slightly, glancing over at the other woman in surprise at the offer. While she'd known the Command Team was usually open to suggestions, she'd always assumed that anything flight-related would have to go through O'Leary first. That being the case, she hadn't even bothered to think about anything to suggest. The pilot always did her best not to show or speak of her dwindling respect for her department head, but she also didn't go out of her way to talk to the woman, either, let alone try to get anything done through her. But with this new avenue of communication opened to her... "I'll keep that in mind." It would definitely give her something to think about in the coming months.
