FRONTIER Promotion Expectations:
So you want to get promoted? It's okay if you do - ambition is a part of human nature.
However, promotions here don't just come automatically. You need to accrue enough Missions in Good Standing (missions and/or events in which you post without any major content or activity troubles), but you also need to demonstrate your suitability in other ways. The behaviors, actions, and characteristics we expect of you as you climb up the ladder are given here.
However, as you proceed, you should keep in mind that to even be considered for promotion, especially to high ranks and positions, we must see that you read posts carefully and reply appropriately, without being required to go back and make corrections. This is the essential building block of collaborative writing, and a definite pre-requisite.
For Early Promotions (up to LT/CPO):
These expectations are essentially what is expected of all players. That is to say, as long as a player maintains good standing on the site, promotion to this level is a matter of time.
For Further Promotions (Lieutenant Commander & Senior Chief Petty Officer; Department Head):
The position of a Department Head, and the ranks of LCDR and SCPO, represent an increase in responsibility. A player in this position is not superior to other players, but they are more reliable, experienced players. As such, the requirements are more rigorous:
Furthermore, a player may only be promoted to Lieutenant Commander or Senior Chief Petty Officer after they run a mission in a satisfactory manner. This means the following:

For Early Promotions (up to LT/CPO):
- The player should be posting regularly and actively (staying close to the posting guidelines, not going inactive).
- The player should use proper formatting.
- The player should write posts that are realistic for their character's abilities and position, and for the setting.
- The player should write relatively clear posts, with relatively few grammar and spelling errors. We understand that typos and grammatical errors occur, but there shouldn't be too many of them.
- The player should ensure that they read correctly the posts to which they are replying.
- The player should support and participate in the plot, but refrain from hijacking it.
- In OOC venues, such as Discord, the player should be courteous and pleasant (horseplay and teasing are allowed, but don't be mean).
- The player should run any ideas for changing the course of the mission with those leading it, and be prepared to take no for an answer.
- The player should show a positive, can-do attitude and willingness to try and overcome difficulties, and make sure criticism they offer is constructive.

The position of a Department Head, and the ranks of LCDR and SCPO, represent an increase in responsibility. A player in this position is not superior to other players, but they are more reliable, experienced players. As such, the requirements are more rigorous:
- The player should show a good understanding of boundaries, IC and OOC, for behavior. This is particularly essential, as a Department Head character has significant IC authority that should not be abused.
- The player should demonstrate commitment to Frontier, such as by contributing to the canon (i.e. creating new species), being helpful to other players, and/or being an active part of the OOC community.
- The player should demonstrate an inclination to "share the spotlight", allowing others a chance to shine in missions/events as well.
- The player should not be a "mini-boss". This means the player should not carry on OOC as though they are the Admins, or as though they possess any other authority that in fact they do not.
- The player should demonstrate thoughtfulness and a cool head when dealing with OOC disagreements.
Furthermore, a player may only be promoted to Lieutenant Commander or Senior Chief Petty Officer after they run a mission in a satisfactory manner. This means the following:
- The mission should be engaging to the players in it.
- The balance of tasks and subplots available to players should be suited to the character mix (read: if there is one engineering character, there shouldn't be 5 tasks for engineering; conversely, if there are 4 sec/tac characters, there should be enough work for them all).
- The mission should run approximately one month. It should neither conclude very early, nor run particularly late.
- The mission should not have prolonged stalls in activity (extraordinary OOC circumstances such as pandemics and wars aside). If a stall develops, the player should work to end the stall and regain momentum.
- The player should run the mission, with help and guidance from the admins but without total reliance on them.
- The mission idea should be innovative.
- The mission should fit into our setting.
