[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office, Front Ear Station]Judy nodded. Thursdays at 8 would be acceptable. As for the matter of food... that was a little trickier. "If you insist, then I suppose I have to brief you on my dietary restrictions," she said. "I keep strictly kosher, so there are certain meats that I won't eat, and I won't eat meat and dairy products in the same meal. Max also prefers it if I keep to a heart-healthy, low-cholesterol diet, but he's flexible. And I'm not allowed to drink coffee outside of my quarters."Among the areas of expertise Max had developed through his marriage, and applied in his work, were kosher dishes (including both historically Jewish cuisine and adaptations of non-kosher recipes), and heart-healthy food to support a wife and children with a rich and storied family history of cardiac disease. For Judy, having kept kosher for her entire life, the added dietary restrictions of age and health came relatively smoothly.

[NPC - Colonel Helena Vasser - First Officer's Office, Front Ear Station] It didn't take very long for Helena to see that she may have bitten off more than she could chew when it came to Judy's dietary restrictions. She listened intently while taking another bite of her pizza. Admittedly, she hadn't expected it to be such a tall order, but she was hardly about to back down. "Well, I may have to ask you to forward me those restrictions, but I don't back down from a challenge after I've given my word," Vasser stated. "In fact, it may not be the worst idea for me to make a few changes to my own diet."Vasser took a sip of water. It seemed that they had a standing affair to maintain a dialogue. From Vasser's perspective, it was the best way to improve relations, if one agreed that they had deteriorated. Vasser leaned back in her chair and took a deep breath. "You know, before joining the Alliance, I lobbied for this posting," Vasser stated. "Clearly the powers that be had different plans, and now, so do I."

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office]"I'll send you some notes," Judy promised, already experienced enough in these matters to have materials at the ready. The list of foods she was discouraged from eating, a few of which she ate anyway, had been provided by her doctors after heart attack #1, three years ago; Kosher laws had been interpreted and compiled many times, out of the original texts (copies of which sat on the XO's shelves). Judy's faith wasn't Vasser's fault, and neither were the older woman's health issues. There was no need to make this difficult. The comment about coveting this command posting was interesting. It certainly cast a few things in a different light, potentially. But such cynicism reserved for private conversation with trusted confidantes: Max, Mabel, and the command team - Saya and Thea. No, lighter comments were preferable. "Funny, that, considering the way things have shaken up here," she remarked, alluding to Captain Ellis's recent move on.

[NPC - Colonel Helena Vasser - First Officer's Office, Front Ear Station] With the passing of only a moment, Vasser began to wonder if she'd said too much. Her mind, picking at the comment that Judy had dropped, referencing the sudden departure of station's now former commander, Captain Felicity Ellis. She smiled at the words, not wanting to betray her concern in the confession that she had made. Still, perhaps it was best to double down with a bit of truth as well. "Yes, I suppose it is rather funny," Vasser replied. She wasn't at all broken up about Ellis' departure, but intrigued with Perry's appointment. She made a mental note to pick his brain about his current assignment. Of course, that conversation would have to be a delicate one. Not necessarily for the two of them, but for the eyes that would be upon them. "On paper I thought I was the obvious choice," Vasser stated. "I was ambitious.... charismatic... a tactician. Ideal for a posting this deep in the Beta Quadrant. Someone that could bring in new allies and hold the line if need be." Vasser exhaled raising her brows. "And what Starfleet saw was a captain that rushed up the ranks in the height of the war that was still too immature for the level of responsibility of this posting."Vasser brought her water to her lips and sipped form the glass. For the first time, she begun to wish it was something a tad stronger. "Ellis was a decent choice," Vasser said. "It looked a hell of a lot like nepotism, but from what I've seen and what I've heard, it was the right choice." Vasser exhaled, and lifted her eyes towards Judy. "Do me a favor... don't tell Starfleet I said that. It sort of trounces my brash exit."Helena held up a finger, motioning that she had something else to say, or ask rather. "I don't suppose you know anything about the Captain's abrupt exit, do you?" she asked. Though, she had to imagine, that even if Judy did, she probably wouldn't share it. Perhaps the colonel was simply more interested in how the executive officer responded than the actual content of her response.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office]Judy maintained a neutral expression and gently adjusted her glasses. She wouldn't say it, but she could tell that the decision to skip over Vasser for this position was the right one. The fluidity of the woman's loyalties said everything that needed saying and then some. "Nothing I can shed light on there," she said apologetically, deliberately ambiguous on whether she didn't know, or whether she simply wasn't at liberty to tell. At long last, she sat back down. "But really, the fleet is full of Captains that came up fast, like yourself. So many COs, so few wrinkles between them. Hell, some of the little baby Lieutenants now weren't even born when I joined the fleet," she remarked, making a bit of a pivot. Truly, she had a distinct generation gap separating her from the likes of Vasser and Felicity, and even more so from the young junior officers. She was old enough to be their mother, all of them.

[NPC - Colonel Helena Vasser - First Officer's Office, Front Ear Station] The shift in topics had circled about rather quickly. Going from Vasser's joining the Alliance to the lack of knowledge about Ellis' departure. It seemed that Eastman was rather insistent on keeping the topic of discussion upon anything that could be deemed sensitive information. She was guarded, and as expected. It wasn't as if Helena had expected the woman to be an open book. Still, it did seem that she was willing to listen. "If anything it's a testament to your resilience," Vasser stated. "All of those lieutenants can learn a great deal from you, and so can those captains for that matter. I am quite certain that I could have benefited from your counsel." Vasser took a sip of her water, and casually examined the chronometer before renewing her attention upon her plate. She went to take one of the remaining bites of the pizza that was on her plate.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office]Judy adjusted her glasses. "I have what to learn from all you children, too," she remarked, almost matter-of-factly. "The Quadrant is changing, and at my age, I have to put in the legwork to keep up."Seeing Vasser checking the time, the older woman glanced at her silver wristwatch. "If you've got to go, I don't want to keep you," she said. "Hell, any time I end up squeezing out of my schedule is grandchildren time, so I don't mind."

[NPC - Colonel Helena Vasser - First Officer's Office, Front Ear Station] Helena didn't desire to be rude, but circumstances seemed to dictate otherwise. She placed down her plate in front of her and turned her eyes upon Judy. "I sincerely apologize," Helena said. "I am expecting a transmission directly from Nyberr scheduled, and the General is not one that likes to keep waiting." Typically, she received her orders from the General in a standard communique. If he was contacting directly via a subspace transmission, it had to be important. Vasser sighed and shook her head slightly. "I really should have allowed for more time when I scheduled this appointment with you."Vasser's apology was a sincere one. Unfortunatley, she had been operating under the assumption that it would run as many of the typical encounters between Starfleet and the Nyberrite Alliance had in the past: quickly and bare-boned. Though that certainly hadn't been the case when it came to Judy. She had been nothing short of warm, respectful and hospitable. "I can assure you that it won't be a mistake that I make again."Vasser finally rose from her seat, thinking it was best to take her leave now, rather than tarry on. "So, I'll see you on Thursday then?" she asked, looking to confirm before making her exit. "And once again, than you so much for your hospitality, Judy."

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's Office]
"Then by all means, off you go," Judy agreed. The conversation had run its course, more or less, after all.
As Vasser left, and Judy cleared the table, she gathered her thoughts. Did she respect Helena Vasser? Yes. Did she agree with Vasser's judgement? Not entirely. Did she trust Vasser? To an extent. Could she work well with Vasser? Yes.
All things considered, she considered the meeting was a success. The tone was set between them, and far more amicably than some might have thought. This was the sort of thing that was worth preserving.
