SLEEPING DOGS LIEBy Charlie FoxJuly, 2380 "Who did you lose?" I asked, unable to ignore this proud man's suffering any longer.
"My thirteen year old daughter and my five year old son. They were at school when our village was gassed." A single tear rolled down the man's weathered face, his expression thoroughly beaten in the wake of telling his story. Chief Jeren, leader of the Kurjarian Resistance and driving force behind the Front Ear Station incursion, was sitting before me, pleading for the galaxy to remember his people.
But before the good citizens of our United Federation of Planets can promise to remember this broken man's people, they must first meet them.
For centuries, these mountain-dwelling, nomadic tribes lived a peaceful existence, separate to the Caldonians, with whom they shared a planet. Eventually, as is the case with many developing species, the Caldonians looked beyond themselves, toward the riches in the mountain regions that the Kurjarians had settled, and beyond the stars in their skies where countless opportunities lay in wait for them. Once Trillium 323 was discovered on tribal lands homes were plundered, their people pitted against each other until their culture, their very way of life, teetered on the brink of eradication. With a partnership for trade struck with the almighty Federation, the veritable genocide was all but green-lit for the Caldonian contingent.
Decades following the systematic dissolution of his tribe's civilisation, the murder of his people and the unforgivable flouting of the intrinsic right of every sentient being to a future, Chief Jeren and a small group of peers traveled to a Federation outpost, intent on making a point.
Armed and dangerous, they took control of a civilian establishment by force and held all those inside hostage for a period of several hours. During this time they had only one demand: an audience with a member of the media. To ensure the safety of those they had captured, this demand was met, and in the wake of this experience I am left with only one certainty.
It is our responsibility to speak up in the face of inequality.
Do we stand idly by, complacent in our ignorance while these people are slaughtered for resources - resources that are being readily accepted by our greasy-handed betters, or do we demand that we apply the values we espouse? I ask not that we compare the crimes of the Caldonians with those of the small, foolhardy Kurjarian group, but rather that we examine our part in this.
Chief Jeren sits in a prison cell, paying the ultimate price for his bad decisions. That's justice.
Where is the justice for Jeren's dead children?

REMEMBER THE JUPITER STARGruesome tragedy for the freighter, Talorian extremists suspectedBy Charlie FoxAugust, 2380 It has been five months, one week and two standard days since the families of those aboard the Orunmila have spoken to their loved ones. The science vessel was lost in the frontier of the Beta Quadrant, and despite the efforts of several search parties and the interest of Starfleet's Admiralty, the only lead came in the form of a second disappeared civilian freighter, Jupiter Star.
The USS Mac was deployed from Front Ear Station and sent on a trail that pointed in the direction of a region of space containing the last sighting of these two unconnected ships. Within days the crew of the Mac, led by Dominion War veteran Commodore Calvin Perry, had picked up on the civilian Star's trail, located her, and sent a Search & Rescue team under Lieutenant Commander (Dr.) Thea Baker's command. Unfortunately the images the team captured were so disturbing in nature that we have not yet obtained permission to distribute them. Dr. Baker had the following to say regarding what was discovered:
"It you wanted to know what hell looked like, this was it and it's something I'll never forget."
Out of a crew of thirty, two survivors were found and delivered safely to the Mac's medical team. Thanks to their expertise and intervention both will physically recover, but will forever carry the psychological scars from the horrors they witnessed when a group of blood-thirsty criminals forced their way on to their ship, their home, and butchered their families. Twenty-eight bodies had been left strewn about the Star, mutilated and harvested, with medical reports and autopsies confirming that many of these victims were alive and watching while the masked raiders removed their organs, one from each individual. It has also been suggested that several of the victims would have lived for many long, agonising minutes afterward.
Following a brief investigation, it was discovered that a single Talorian ship had been in the same region of space. In addition to the Talorian blood found on-scene, and one of the surviving witness' testimony, the Mac gave pursuit, catching up quickly once the suspects entered their own system. At that juncture, the Talorian vessel opened fire and Commodore Perry ordered a response of force. Before the ship could be destroyed or the suspects remanded in custody for questioning, the Talorian Armada, tasked with protecting their system and their people, requested that the USS Mac cease fire and depart without delay. Primary L'Sho of Talor refused further negotiations, but when the Federation News Network reached out for a comment, his office issued a statement.
"All of Talor, our great cities and peaceful colonies, are observing a mourning period for our beloved Princess Orya, last remaining member of our royal family. Along with her decorated guard on the royal vessel Dies Irae, our Princess was murdered by Starfleet agitators who entered our territory without notice and proceeded to initiate an unprovoked attack on our sovereignty. At this time we are not in a position to welcome any overtures from the United Federation of Planets."
When asked if they would like to comment on the rumour that the Dies Irae burned for a further ten minutes under the Talorian Armada's careful watch, the office of Primary L'Sho declined to respond.

MASS MURDER MOST FOULPsychopath roams freely, APISS calls for Security re-trainingBy Charlie FoxSeptember, 2380 A night to remember recently turned into a night everyone seems to want to forget, as The Association of Promenade Interests in Service & Security gathered business owners, esteemed residents and Starfleet officers to the Front Ear Awards, 2380, only to be rewarded themselves with great tragedy. With the evening hosted by infamous ex-convict Benjamin J. Reddington, the panel sought to honour the contributions of those who have worked toward the improvement and gentrification of our frontier home. Unfortunately for them, and for the hundred innocent guests, someone had hatched an insane plan to derail the entire holodeck event and poison the evening.
The male in question, who the FNN now knows to be Betazoid, appeared to be going by the name 'Phoenix', and boarded the train with a number of other guests including his now deceased date, Callista Maybourne. While the staff prepared the replica of Earth's ancient locomotive to depart the platform, this individual reportedly gained access to the driver's cab, engine room and galley, where the food for the first courses was being plated. It is unknown at this juncture whether or not he had assistance, but we do believe that the cyanide in the caviar was intended to create chaos and serve as a distraction.
Ensign Chloe Hudson, Intelligence Operative and the officer who successfully identified the tampered food as the source of the poisoning, reflects on the experience.
"I should have realised I was in danger, I'd had some of the caviar earlier... I guess I was too focused on trying to solve the case, it didn't occur to me that I was in trouble too... I started feeling really ill all of a sudden, a headache, dizziness, I was really disoriented, but managed to tell Kova I'd had the caviar. Then I started throwing up. It felt... I don't know, having seen what was happening to other people I thought I was going to die."
The individual Ensign Hudson is referring to is civilian consultant, Kova Sh'qaleq. It was thanks to her expertise and quick-thinking that the remainder of the guestlist escaped the holodeck with their lives. We caught up with Ms. Sh'qaleq recently and asked if she'd like to share her thoughts. She did not hesitate.
"We almost [CENSORED] died! The security parameters need a complete overhaul so the next [CENSORED] that wants to live out his endgame wet-dream at our expense doesn’t take us along for the ride. Wait, are you recording this? Because you can definitely quote me. May get me a raise."
As alluded to by Ms. Sh'qaleq, the suspect not only tampered with the meals of the guests, but with the base code of the holoprogram, too. Safety protocols had been bypassed, and anyone trapped inside found themselves cut off from the main Computer mainframe and communications. During the confusion, 'Phoenix', who had slowed his heartrate to such an extent that he was declared dead, managed to initiate a portable, site-to-site transport using a device on his person. From the relative safety of the VIP car, he detonated an explosive that decoupled his car from the rest of the heavily populated train. He then activated a number of other bombs, left in strategic positions throughout the Orient Express.
Brack, proprietor of The Twilight Hotel & Casino, had the following to say on the matter:
"If it hadn't been for that Andorian fee-male, I would be dead! It is a miracle that I managed to survive the poison, bombs, the Chief of Security's indiscriminate violence! He assaulted me, you know. That's right! Right to the lobes! I could have been permanently damaged... And now this psychopath serial killer is loose. Probably watching me, waiting for the chance to finish us all off. And what do Security do in response? They have parties! They go gallivanting off into space on that monstrous waste of latinum!"
According to APISS, they are soon to begin polling the civilians on the Station with a view to putting together a 'Plan of Action'. The organisation have said they are committed to working with the authorities in order to bring all of those involved in the Orient Express disaster to justice.
The Federation News Network has opened up a dedicated, completely anonymous communications tip line. The suspect is thought to be dark-haired, with dark eyes and a sallow complexion. He is reported to be tall, well-spoken and with a tendency toward the latest fashions. If you have any information about 'Phoenix', or believe you may have seen him, please call immediately.

TALORIAN TALL TALES? Fleeters question if Talorians belong in the UFP, as the bodies continue to pile up
By Charlie FoxNovember, 2380 Once again relations with the Talorian delegation turn frosty, as one of their number faces several serious charges. An investigation on Argus Major is ongoing, but early results indicate that diplomatic aide to Primary L'Sho, Relan, will face sentences for the crimes of murder, attempted murder and aggravated assault. The Talorians themselves have levied their own charges against their man, including conspiracy, slander and sedition.
Following a reception aboard the USS Mac, an event that was set to champion cultural exchange and understanding while the ship delivered the Talorian representatives to engage in entry talks with the Federation, the dead body of Kaelpra, diplomatic advisor, was discovered in a Jefferies tube by Crewman Jovireh Velal. Velal, who had been alerted to a potential problem when the advisor failed to meet her at their agreed time for a working breakfast, spoke to the FNN about the first victim's character.
"Kaelpra was a good man who cared about his people, and was willing to risk his life to do what was best for them. He had high hopes for negotiating with the Federation, and was eager to experience the vast cultures we have to offer. I was both honored and privileged to have known him."
The second victim was Petty Officer Kaya Som, who was viciously attacked in a shuttlebay by Relan. He was interrupted first by Derk't, a bodyguard in Primary L'Sho's entourage, who attacked Relan when he quite fortunately stumbled upon the violence. Security & Tactical were fast on the scene, however, and under the direction of Lieutenant Laurel Andrews and Petty Officer T'Karra, both Talorian aggressors were neutralised and Kaya Som transported immediately to Sickbay, where she would make a full recovery.
Upon regaining consciousness, the detained Talorian wasted no time in laying all of the blame at Primary L'Sho's feet, asserting that he was an assassin and acting only under the Primary's instruction. The Supreme Commander of the Talorian Armada has denied these claims, and has officially dismissed them as "ramblings of a troubled traditionalist". No representative from Primary L'Sho's camp is available for comment at this time, though the Offices of Diplomatic Affairs & Investigation on Argus Major have confirmed that the Primary himself still remains on the premises, and will not be permitted to return to Talor Prime until the investigation has been completed to their satisfaction.
