Sven clasped his hands together. The thought of steamed buns and tea sounded really good and felt excited. Experiencing the big apple with native. They would know all the good spots. "I think it would have to be one of mine as well. They are kinda hard to come by in Colorado."
Especially rural Colorado where he is from. Denver had some good restaurants in the LoDo region, but it wasn't the same.
"Know a good place for gelato as well?" he asked.

[Chinatown]
"That can come later. We only had lunch an hour ago," Judy answered, choosing to pace their eating schedule. "You men and your eating habits," she then quipped, eyeing Max, before hearing a ringing from her handbag. "Speaking of men with questionable eating habits, I should get that." Taking out a civilian communication device, Judy cleared her throat. "Williams family roadkill emporium; you kill it, we'll grill it! How may I help you?" she shot off with comical enthusiasm.
Max and Anna both chuckled, even though this was far from the first time Judy had used this line. Her ridiculous enthusiasm was... ridiculous.
"Yes, of course."
"Let's do Wednesday."
"Love you. Buh-bye."
She set the device back in her handbag.
"That was Lawrence," she explained. "Now, let's go inside."

Sven laughed, he hadn't seen this side of Judy and she seemed to be in her element. And he was enjoying himself. "Well, I eat a lot. Almost 4,500 per day. And it's a cheat day so I'm going to enjoy myself." he said with enthusiastic glee. How's Lawrence?"

[Chinese Bakery, Chinatown]
"Might want to count today as two cheat days," Judy advised. "By the time we finish with... however much of Manhattan we'll cover, we'll have noshed on just about anything you can name and then some."
As they entered the bakery, Max dipped into Judy's handbag to get his readers and look at the entries.
"Lotus seed paste. That's delicious," he said, reading one label alluding to this particular filling.
"Let's get a box with buns with several different fillings," Anna suggested, winning proud nods from both of her parents. "We can then cut them and share."

Bakery, China Town.
"Lotus seed paste?" Svens made an inquisitive look. "What is that?"
He knew that the lotus was a Lilly pad, but he had no idea what this seed paste was. He looked skeptical. His range of culinary knowledge was limited.
But Max was a baker and he trusted his judgment. "That could be fun. Unless it wierds out Anna too much. In that case I can get my own."

"Max and I raised adventurous eaters. I'm not worried about Anna," Judy replied, the pride evident in her voice. No fruit of her womb had turned out as a picky eater.
"Lotus seed paste is made from the seeds of the lotus plant. It's sweet, and considered very luxurious," Max said of the food. "Mrs. Williams and I have had it before."
"Let's get 4 buns, different kinds, and share those. Or do we need 6?" Judy asked.

This was turning out to be a fine day. A lesson in economics, as well an adventure in the culinary. "Maybe 6, but let me split the cost."

Max shook his head. He could tell what was coming. "Young man, I'll pay the whole cost," Judy asserted. "Consider it a gift." Judy was kind, but assertive. She made it a point to pay for her various companions, especially in light of her large, inherited wealth. It was a rule she lived by.
"Let's go for an assortment of 6 buns, packed to go, each cut in four, please," she asked the cashier. "One with lotus seed, one with red bean, one with custard, one with sesame, and two plain buns."
She extended her thumb to the scanner, to be charged, as the box was packaged and handed over the counter.

"That's very generous of you!" he said. And he was exited to try these.

[Bakery -> Tea Shop]
"I've had the fortune, in my life, to have plenty of money, so I really don't have any reason not to be generous," Judy explained. "Max and I decided a long time ago that we don't want to live an extravagant lifestyle, to own our own moon or a massive mansion or anything like that, which means we're living well within our means."
"We have each other, we have the kids, the grandkids, the dogs, what more could we need?" Max asked rhetorically, explaining their decision as the group headed to a small, standing-room-only tea shop just down the street.
"A full kitchen and a swimming pool, Dad. I know you," Anna answered with a bit of teenage snark.
"As you know, we are more of a coffee-drinking family, but we're here for the experience, and that includes the tea," Judy told Sven as they entered the tea shop.

Sven walked along with the family. In many ways it was a surrogate family for him. Since his father died, and his mother abandoned him he didn't have figures in his life he could consult with.
"What is the significance of this shop?" He asked. He knew there was a reason why Judy picked that one.
"I think it's okay to want nice things. The question is, how they are squired." He was referring the earning it or exploiting others to get it.

[Tea Shop, Chinatown]
"We chose this shop because it's here," Judy answered. "Back when I lived in Manhattan, before Starfleet, I had a mental list of the best places to get any given thing, but the city's changed and my memory's only gotten worse."
"I like you when you're more forgetful like this. Makes you more spontaneous," Max told Judy. She kissed him briefly.
"Anyway, in terms of money, the ethics get a little trickier when it's money you inherited, as opposed to money you earned yourself. Or, if you're an heiress's trophy husband," Judy philosophized, poking Max to signify that he was the 'trophy husband'. "We feel a certain duty to give to charitable causes, various foundations, our local synagogue, yada yada, and to save for our beautiful offspring's sake, but we still spend some. You know, the money that we inherited rather than earned ourselves feels like it's less our money."
