[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]"I'm sure Chromar knows, but sometimes the best tipoff is the person who just got an expensive watch, or a taste for pre-occupation springwine," Judy pointed out, aware of the irony that her own timepiece was a high-end one. The difference, of course, was that she was old-money, and her expensive watch wasn't flashy and was built to last. "As for the shipping labels, we could certainly run those down, and give you the results."At the very least, the shipping label could lead to another low-level pawn that they could leverage. At best, it could lead to a breakthrough. [NPC - Lt. j.g .Mabel Henriksen - Antechamber to the CO's Office]"I do all sorts of work for the Captain. Usually it's paperwork, but sometimes she sends me out to meetings and operations she can't make, so I can help out there and keep her updated."It was for good reason that some had nicknamed Mabel, "the elf on the shelf", for when she was in uniform, most of what she saw ended up on Judy's desk. She, however, didn't think that was very fair.

[NPC - Colonel Helena Vasser - Eastman's Office, Post-Promotion Thread] Vasser nodded as Judy gave some advice on how to proceed with their investigation. "We'll be sure to keep an eye out for such spending wherever we make port," Helena said. However, for those instances where people could be more careful about drawing too much attention, Vasser wanted to be prepared for them as well. Judy also agreed to try to track down those shipping labels. Vasser only hoped that it would lead to some sort of clue. "Anything that tracks the chain of custody of that container would be extremely valuable," she remarked. She took a few moments, nursing her lunch before she shifted the conversation slightly. "In a related matter, have you heard anything else about Tholian activity? I can share that our intelligence reports show a slight decline in activity, but that could easily be the calm before the storm."
[NPC - Alpha Sergeant Gorsk - Antechamber of Eastman's office, Front Ear Station ] Gorsk listened as Mabel explained her duties. The woman tilted her head slightly as Mabel spoke. It was obvious that she was a bit confused by what she was hearing. "I see," Gorsk said. Is that the extent of your duties?" Gorsk turned her attention towards the doorway, her eyes casually assessing their surroundings again.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]"Our intelligence is about the same," Judy answered, but then broke into a laugh. "Starfleet isn't the end-all, be-all of information, however."She set her pita down on one napkin, and wiped her hands on another. "I don't know if you remember, but the Treaty of Bajor had a clause in it, that capped Klingon garrisons in their new colonies on the Cardassian border[fn]The ones the Klingons seized in the Klingon-Cardassian war[/fn], with the cap only kicking in 5 years after the treaty. That means now, which means a lot of Klingon manpower needs somewhere to go."Judy poured some water as she continued her explanation. "Now I have a friend - actually an ex-boyfriend from college - who works around those colonies, and he says most of those warriors aren't going for an honorable discharge. If I know this, the Tholians know this, and I imagine they'll think twice about pissing us off with that many more Klingons around. If I were them, I would be." [NPC - Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Antechamber to the CO's Office]"Yeah, that's about it. In broad terms, anyway," Mabel answered, not feeling obligated to explain how her job was a lot, lot more than it sounded like. "What's your job?"

[NPC - Colonel Helena Vasser - Eastman's Office, Post-Promotion Thread] Vasser nodded along as Judy pointed out how shrewd and calculating the Tholians could be. They had managed to avoid an outright war thus far by being able to effectively estimate what they could and could not get away with. Thus far, the Federation had been tolerant of these minor excursions. However, that didn't make them any lest annoying or devastating. "I don't disagree with your assessment," Helena said, "however, I favor... caution. Federation occupation in this region could tilt other parties into an unexpected alliance."There were several governments that had thus far remained isolated. However, with the Federation seeding a more permanent presence through Front Ear Station, it could potentially tip the balance of power. Certainly nothing the Federation hadn't weighed beforehand as an acceptable risk. Helena smiled at the mention of her son expecting a new addition to the family soon. "Well, congratulations," she said genuinely. "I can't begin to imagine how excited you must be for that."
[NPC - Alpha Sergeant Gorsk - Antechamber of Eastman's office, Front Ear Station ] It seemed like an odd question to follow her description of whatever the colonel deemed necessary. It gave Gorsk concerns that the Federation universal translator was more faulty than she initially believed. "I've yet to find undesirable duties bestowed upon me," Gorsk stated. "They've ranged from administrative tasks to security and intelligence matters."

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]"They're geopolitical jackasses, the Tholians, but they're not stupid. They only pick fights they can win," Judy summarized. Tholian aggression was usually either the opportune takeover of an isolated (typically unaligned) world, or paranoid acts to scare off prospective invaders. "Honestly, I'm just hoping for a few months of quiet. My son Gerald, back on Earth, wants to visit for Passover, but I'm not letting him come if the place is a warzone. He's got a daughter due in a few weeks."And just like that, geopolitics were banished from Judy's head, and grandkids moved in. She was very eager to meet both the two of Gerald's kids that she'd met before, and the one that would soon enter the world. [NPC - Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Antechamber to the CO's Office]"Whatever the Colonel deems necessary" almost sounded like some kind of shady fixer, or more like Mabel's own job. She needed an example for context. "What kinds of things?" she asked.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]Judy was a more astute geopolitical analyst than her background suggested, and she was attuned to the dance that was needed to keep the neighbors here calm despite the newly competent Federation presence. Heck, she was dancing it with Vasser right now. But, at the moment, her mind simply wasn't there. "It's incredibly exciting, just as much for this little one as it was for the ones that came before. Finally meeting a grandchild for the first time is just like falling in love, so the anticipation is... extraordinary. Really something you have to experience, when your time comes," she said, reflecting on her already ample experience. Every grandchild, every single time, had managed to exceed her expectations and change her life for the better, just by existing. [NPC - Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Antechamber to the CO's Office]"That sounds a lot like the kinds of things I do," Mabel said, having now heard Gorsk speak twice in quick succession. Perhaps she needed to go get her commbadge repaired. "I'm actually getting an assistant of my own to help me."It was true: Roland L. Jenkins was set to join the CO's office as Judy's assistant's assistant - Mabel's own personal Mabel.

[NPC - Colonel Helena Vasser - Eastman's Office, Post-Promotion Thread] Colonel Vasser continued to offer Judy a smile as she spoke about the initial meeting of her new grandchild. She had to admit, she had never considered what the sensation could be akin to, but had never considered a comparison to falling in love... at least not romantically. Judy even remarked that it should be something she'd have to experience when her time came. Helena nodded slightly. "When the time comes," she repeated with a thin smile. Honestly, it wasn't something she gave much thought to. The majority of her thoughts lay with her professional career. Pursuing a personal life had always seemed like something... down the road. The only problem with that, was that in life, you were always moving closer and closer to that point down the road. "If you don't mind me asking," Vasser started, as she leaned a bit closer in her seat, "how did you ever find the time for all of that?"
[NPC - Alpha Sergeant Gorsk - Antechamber of Eastman's office, Front Ear Station ] Gorsk's red eyes seemed to grow wider as Mabel mentioned that Gorsk's duties sounded much like her own. If their duties were indeed similar, then perhaps Gorsk's respect for the woman had grown a bit more. At least, that was the case before she mentioned that she'd be getting an assistant of her own pretty soon. Gorsk tilted her head slightly. "I do not understand," she said. "Why would you require the addition of an assistant to perform your duties?"

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]Judy gently adjusted her glasses, and then leaned forward. Now there was one of life's complicated questions. "Well, the most important thing was to take the time to do it. Building, and maintaining, the relationship that Max and I have is something that takes time and effort; so does raising kids. In many cases, certainly in my case, that was time that came out of work," she explained, with clear subtext. It had taken her over 20 years of service to reach her current rank, that others had reached in 10 or 15. "The other thing is to make time, to find time. I fill up my days, I keep very little slack in the schedule, so that I can come home as early as I can, and so I can take as many days off as I possibly can. That's just what I have to do to be a good wife, mom, and grandma, while still doing my job."There were a lot of things that Judy felt were important to family life, like how she and Max managed to go decades without ever fighting, but she'd hit the most important time-management points. [NPC - Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Antechamber to the CO's Office]"Well, we got to a point where I needed to be in two places at once, or Captain Eastman needed to be in three places at once, so we just needed an extra person on the staff," Mabel explained. "There's a crazy amount of work in running a station, and Dr. Baker is double-hatting as a First Officer and in medical. It's fun, but it's very busy."

[NPC - Colonel Helena Vasser - Eastman's Office, Post-Promotion Thread] Helena listened carefully as Judy explained exactly how she had managed to do it, to raise a family. Of course, she couldn't help but notice one start difference in Judy's situation compared to her own. "But you did it much earlier in your career," Helena pointed out. "And that's only one of the differences between our situations. The Soteria isn't built to carry families. There aren't many schools on a Nyberrite station either. Typically, those with families are away for tours of duty months if not years at a time." The realization was likely among the first the colonel had had where she found a regret in her resignation from Starfleet. Her eyes rose to meet Judy's. "If this was something I was ever serious about, one way or another, I would have to put my entire career on hold," she mused aloud. She could possibly take posting on Nyberr, perhaps some cushy office job, but she knew it would mean abandoning the bridge of a starship for certain. And for how long at that? "I suppose it's not really in the cards for me."
[NPC - Alpha Sergeant Gorsk - Antechamber of Eastman's office, Front Ear Station ] Gorsk listened to the explanation that Mabel provided. She seemed to process the words well enough, and found it a sufficient, given her limited knowledge of how Starfleet worked. "Then, it is not because your captain found you inept?" she asked somewhat rhetorically. "A satisfactory explanation. I hope you enjoy your... assistant."

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]Judy sighed. Helena made some good points. "Family always requires some compromises and sacrifices, and you'd definitely have to make more of them than most," she noted. She took a long swig of water as she considered her next words. "It's a deeply personal choice, and I know a lot of women my age who are perfectly happy without children. I'm just not one of them."That seemed like a good enough note to end it on. Judy was keenly aware that hers wasn't the only viable model for womanhood this side of 60; her life just worked for her. [NPC - Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Antechamber to the CO's Office]Mabel wasn't sure how to take the notion of ineptitude. Judy had, after all, promoted her, and continued to entrust her with more and more sensitive duties. She'd even agreed to put her name forward for the Bridge Officer's exam. "Thank you," she accepted the well-wishes, despite the awkwardness around the previous phrase.
