Personal History
Early Life/Pre-Starfleet Career:
Judy was born the only child of Jonathan and Diane Eastman, a wealthy Jewish couple in the New York area. She was raised with the understanding that she would be given her share of the family fortune if (and only if) she worked hard in her schooling and her career.
Judy didn’t particularly need that encouragement. A bright kid (and a geeky one with glasses), she excelled in her studies, showing proficiency and interest in math and the sciences, as well as history.
In high school, fueled by a caffeine addiction, the young Ms. Eastman was a member of the school debate team and the math club, as well as an editor of the school newspaper. She was the salutatorian of her high school graduating class, and admitted to several prestigious learning institutions.
Judy attained a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley in 2338, followed by a master’s in the same field from MIT in 2340. Having specialized in terraforming, the young woman began her work in the design area of terraforming projects, before eventually switching to project management.
In 2345, Judy married her first husband, a (Jewish) coworker named Joe Berman. She gave birth to their twin sons, Gerald and Lawrence, in 2346, and left the workforce.
However, the two proved to be unsuitable for each other. Joe’s philandering ways, combined with Judy’s frustrations at raising their children largely on her own, led to much tension, and a divorce which was finalized in 2351. Judy retained custody of the boys, whose legal surnames were changed to Eastman, and began to try and plot a new course as a single mom.
Unlike many single parents, however, Judy had a fortune to fall back on. Relying on this source of wealth, she began to pursue a PhD at Columbia University, in her native New York City, which she started in 2352 and finished in 2358. It was at this point that Starfleet poached her.
Academy/Technical Academy (if Starfleet):
Fast-tracked through Academy based on her civilian studies.
Previous Assignments (if applicable):
The 2350s were a transformative time for Starfleet’s R&D department. With the Galaxy-class project completed, there was a whole new generation of vessels and starbases that needed to be designed to match the pace, and many older facilities in need of retrofits to accommodate it. In this atmosphere, Starfleet commissioned civilian engineers with very little additional training. Judith Eastman was one of these.
Judy began her career in project management at Utopia Planitia, initially overseeing small renovations in the facility itself.
It was here that she met Max Williams, a middle-aged chef who worked at a Martian gastropub. Despite their different backgrounds (his parents owned a freighter, hers were high-powered lawyers), the two hit it off immediately. Max moved in with Judy in 2360, and they tied the knot in 2361. Together, they had two children: Thomas in 2361, and Anna in 2366. While Max himself is not Jewish, and never converted, their household is Jewish and so are their children.
In 2374, in the heat of the Dominion War, Judy was pressed into service as First Officer of the USS Whirlaway. Separated from her family, and forced to miss the birth of her first grandson (Lawrence’s son, Michael), the war brought Judy challenges beyond just the fighting and death itself.
After the war, Judy remained a First Officer until 2377, now joined by Max and their younger children, before returning to R&D. Over the postwar period, Judy welcomed 4 more grandchildren into the world, by both of her older sons.

Reason for joining Starfleet or moving to a Federation base:
Judy originally joined Starfleet in 2358, after finishing her PhD, finding herself at a personal and professional crossroads in terms of setting her life's tone after the divorce.
To this date, she isn't sure whether it was the need to get away, a sense of patriotism, or a midlife crisis that drove her to Starfleet.
Judy accepted the posting to the Front Ear as she saw an opportunity to conserve and reinvigorate the spirit of exploration in Starfleet, while still offering enough luxury to satisfy her teenage daughter.
Academy/Tech Majors and Interests:
Civil engineering degrees from civilian universities. Expertise areas include terraforming and project management
Hobbies: Hiking, swimming, cooking, playing rock music
Short-term Goals: Pursue the spirit of exploration on the frontier, protect Anna, keep her sons on the right track
Long-term Goals: Get Anna into a selective college, gain a sense of accomplishment in her Starfleet career, ensure her grandchildren have a connection to their Jewish heritage. Protect her children, especially Anna, from the heartbreak Judy herself had gone through.
Defining Characteristic: "Mom vibes"/approaching problems with her perspective as a mother.
Sense of Humor:Idiosyncratic, ranging from corny puns, to long-winded stories, to raunchy comments.
Phobias or Fears: Any harm that may come to her children's life, well-being, happiness, and Jewishness. Losing her mental lucidity.
Favorite Things: Rock music, reading, her family, cheese
Least Favorite Things: Mess, disorder, assimilation (of her Jewish relatives, into non-Jewish society; also the Borg kind).
Bad Habits or Vices: Coddling, nagging, guilting (towards loved ones, esp. her children); stress-eating (often expensive cheese).
Achievements (personal or professional): Raising several well-adjusted children (who gave her Jewish grandchildren); her doctoral thesis; relatively low casualties (by war standards) in her previous tours of duty.
Disappointments: Her first marriage.
Illnesses:
Judy suffers from an allergy to Retinax V, and is also both near- and far-sighted. As a result, she requires either contact lenses with additional reading glasses, or bifocals.
Additionally, Judy has high blood cholesterol levels, and heart disease. Following two heart attacks, she received an artificial heart in 2379.
Having broken her right hip in the line of duty in 2375, Judy has a prosthetic hip.
Judy has Carpal Tunnel syndrome.
Strengths: Detail-oriented, innovative, organized, meticulous, eloquent, not afraid to ask for help, looks on the crew as her children.
Weaknesses: Very cautious (especially where lives are at stake), looks on the crew as her children, too process-oriented at times.
Prejudices: Is intensely suspicious of Romulans, Cardassians, Breen, and boys her daughter's age.

[Eastman-Williams family quarters]
Judy looked up from her morning papers to the sight of her daughter, Anna, about to head out.
"Young lady, where do you think you're going?" she asked, a clear measure of admonition in her voice.
"School, mom. What do you think?" Anna countered, looking bored and displeased with the question.
"Dressed like that?" the mother asked her daughter, eyeing the 9th-grader's shorts with disdain. "Won't you get cold?"
"I'll go change, mom," the daughter conceded, though her voice spoke of disdain for the mother's smothering embrace.
"If you think that's a good outfit to wear to school, on the station, with the temperature being what it is, then go for it," Judy replied. Of course, it was clear what she herself thought.
"I'll change," Anna conceded. She already knew to recognize her mother's passive-aggressive style of persuasion.
"Do whatever you think is right," Judy added, ratcheting it up a little more.
"I'm going, I'm going, mother," Anna snapped back, sounding almost angry.
"Don't forget your jacket! And your lunch!" Judy added, triumphant.
