[ Apazi Fellin | ]Caldonia. Fellin didn't hide his disdain. His lip curled into a sneer and he flicked the lint away. It certainly wasn't the same as the Occupation, but the horrific parallels were plenty for Fellin to feel as much contempt for the Caldonian government as he had for the Cardassians. "If the Federation thinks the Karjurians' freedom won't be paid for in blood..." He believed his relationship with Judy was solid enough for it to endure criticism of her people. She'd certainly heard it before when they worked together in the reconstruction of his home of Bajor. "Diplomacy is agony." A grim turn, perhaps. Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]"Diplomacy may be agony, but war is hell. In the end, these matters involve both poisons, in varying doses."The undertone was clear: though Judy hardly deluded herself about Caldonia, she still harbored hope that total war wasn't the answer. She hadn't been on the business end of the occupation, but she had seen the Dominion War and its aftermath. "We both know the real question is which poison can be masked more easily, for the swing voter's consumption."The metaphor was strained, but the point sharp - politics could easily override policy.

[ Apazi Fellin ]"You have met with the Karjurians directly? Without the Caldonians present? And they're satisfied to wait?" Fellin wondered without hostility. He only knew of the situation there from afar, but perhaps the Federation had been able to access the enslaved population free of Caldonian influence. The Bajorans had hardly been united in their wishes, from the first signs of incoming catastrophe, through the Occupation, and even now the Provisional Government represented a diversity of opinion on their fate. Opinion about Federation involvement was among the most contentious topics. Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]Judy sighed deeply as she adjusted her glasses. "I can't give you a concrete answer. The key word, as you might've guessed, is classified," she said apologetically, and then raised a finger, as though indicating a realization - or a loophole she'd found. "However, I can say that - generally - in such cases, there are all sorts of contacts, many of which never do become known to the public. And generally, in an oppressed population - and in any population - opinions on direct action lie on a spectrum. Granted, you already know that - in general."
"And that's about all I'd say on company time."It was one part protocol, two parts principle that led Judy to be much more plainspoken when she wasn't on the job.

[ Apazi Fellin | ]That sigh. It actually made Fellin smile. It carried the weight of a hundred starships, Prophets bless. Naturally, he understood that Judy could share no more, and he lifted his hands in a low surrender to illustrate as much. "Speaking a little speaks a lot," Fellin said, interpreting a Bajoran proverb. He let it sit for an extra moment, then a thought occured to him. He considered one moment more before deciding to proceed. He leaned forward to rest his elbow on his knee. "To change the topic, it's funny, you know," he said, "that when I was on my way here, the name of the planet 'Kerelia' was familiar to me but I couldn't place it, so I put it out of my mind. Then, I come to remember later where I'd heard of it before. Deep Space 9." Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]Judy didn't mind moving on. The political topic of Caldonia was one better discussed when she was on her own time, and with Max on hand to complete the sentences she wasn't supposed to say. And besides, Kerelia coming up on DS9, of all places, was most interesting. "In whatever context?" she asked. "We're hardly famous, and certainly not important to most; not to mention, quite far."Perhaps someday, this place would be renowned, and preferably for something good.

[ Apazi Fellin ]"I wouldn't have noted it," Fellin admitted, "but for the circumstances surrounding it. One of the comm panels in a docking ring juncture was apparently malfunctioning and the queue to access it was backing up." He made made a gesture with his fingers to paint a picture of a long queue forming. As a man with a career in logistics, Fellin always had an opinion about the best way to move things from one place to another, but he resisted subjecting Judy to it for the purposes of this bit of goss. "I wasn't too far back so I could hear quite plainly a pair of traders shouting into the comm - kaw-rell-ee-yah - and the comm coming back with unhelpful errors about unrecognized origin points." He went on. "Next day as I'm on my way out again, I see the same traders haggling for tranquilizers of all things." Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]Judy could tell that Fellin was holding in a strong opinion about the line, and she supposed that, with a few more years of senior brain each, they might've thoroughly derailed right then and there. But, they didn't derail. "Tranquilizers," she echoed, clearly intrigued. "Actually, I suppose it makes sense. The old administration here, up to about when we came in a year ago, was rather lax with... everything, so there were plenty of poachers running around Kerelia. I won't claim we got rid of them all yet, but we got rid of the dumb ones."At least, she supposed this was the explanation. It made sense.

[ Apazi Fellin ]Poachers. Fellin shook his head and shrugged. "The work of this station is unique and varied," he had to say. "Chumming with the Nyberrite Alliance, frontier outpost, strange explorations, and routing out poachers." How did they do it? "And here you are, cheerful as ever, baking to keep the pagh wraiths at bay. She never tires, our Judy Eastman." "Me, on the other hand, I'm chasing down spoiling fruit." Apazi Fellin had no regrets. He'd fought long enough. Judy had more than earned some respite.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]For just a moment, Judy felt the full weight of her sixty-four years. Yes, she was vintage, just like Fellin, with more than enough bruises to merit her hefty pension. And yet, fleeting thoughts aside, she was nowhere near claiming it. "I'd just grow restless doing anything else, and I'd drive Max crazy. We'll retire someday, but not yet."After the heart replacement, Judy had gotten a massive second wind. She felt so much younger. "We do have a plan. We'll go live in our vacation home in the Galilee[fn]The Galilee mountains are in the north of modern-day Israel[/fn] [fn]This is one of four properties Judy and Max use on Earth (and may have mentioned before), alongside their New Jersey home, her parents' vacation home in Maine, and his mother's home in the Scottish highlands[/fn], and... well, depending on what day you ask us, we're planning to either run an Inn, or a dairy."She ran a hand through her hair. Though the blonde color was artificial now (her locks, once naturally golden, had gone fully white by the time she was 50), the way it made her look younger and more energetic was honest.
