2 weeks after S2M2 & S2E2[NPC - PO2 Roland L. Jenkins - Antechamber, Commanding Officer's Office, Front Ear Station]One of the many roles of station command was supporting the business community, and Captain Eastman in particular adored the station's small businesses. After Caldonia, she seemed to be throwing herself further into that job. And yet, Roland believed Apazi Fellin was a different case. From what the Captain had said to Mabel (and Mabel said to Jenkins), there was some kind of history there. "Captain Eastman is waiting for you, Mr. Apazi," he announced politely, though he'd be listening to figure out what this history was.

[ Apazi Fellin | CO's Office, Frontier Station ]"Thank you." Fellin nodded in reply to one of Judy's assistants. It was something he'd been getting used to again, being surrounded by the color-coded Starfleet personell. It reminded him of the harried and hastled reconstruction of Bajor's infrastructure, the Federation committing thousands of their uniforms to the effort. Apazi himself had worn a uniform for a short while, that of the Provisional Government. He didn't miss it. He'd always been too breezy to salute, people finding is bearing somehow impertinent even though he felt nothing of the sort. Fellin adjusted his side satchel on his shoulder and went through Judy's open door to an office that could only be hers. He smiled at the surroundings and nodded to a tray on the desk. He approached and had a look, keeping his hands to himself. "Where do you find the time?" Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]Judy looked up from her desk with her typical, gentle smile. "I'm a grandma. I bake cookies on autopilot," she quipped. Picking up the tray of chocolate chip cookies, she walked it over to the conference table. "I prefer the table. You know, the desk is too... imposing, for conversation. Too hierarchical," she explained the move, as she took her seat along one side of the conference table. Her large, wooden desk, while practical for her need for multiple displays, was also intimidating in its bigness and evident expense. It established the elevated stature and power of the Captain, and Judy didn't like that.

[ Apazi Fellin ]Fellin joined Judy at the table without objection and settled back into a chair, one leg crossed over the other. Through the large porthole, one could see the comings and goings of distant ships taxi'ing in and out of dock. Frontier didn't bustle like stations closer to populated planets, but the traffic was steady. He took up a cookie - golden brown speckled with dark brown chocolate. Chocolate was possibly Earth's finest export. He didn't hesitate to tuck in even as he produced a PADD from his bag. "I'm having trouble with customs on Arkaria. They're refusing to release a produce order," he said, the first touch of discontent Judy would have heard from him in many many years. "I know their game. They know if I hold out, the preservation packs will expire and it will spoil." The PADD was open to the chain of communications back and forth between Fellin and Arkarian customs. It demanded a fee be paid to cover a superfluous invasive pest inspection, unnecessary because the crates had been cleared on Bajor. He shrugged a shoulder. "Captain of a Federation space station could have some pull." Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]"Customs on Arkaria," Judy mused. She perused the communication, and smiled bemusedly at just how familiar it was. "There are some real characters working the customs beat on Arkaria. I like to get things shipped direct from Cait when I can," she advised. "But, I can probably pull some weight around out there. There are some big-shot prosecutors who owe me some favors."She'd agreed to testify against the terrorists who'd escaped the Mac's brig, and given a properly emotional testimony at that - in uniform, no less.

[ Apazi Fellin | CO's Office, Frontier Station ]Arkarian prosecutors? Fellin raised his eyebrows and sat back, folding his hands in his lap. It was a planet that had seem some trouble in the recent decades that, if Fellin remembered correctly, had drawn in the Federation. It seemed they'd done so a second time. "By the Prophets," he swore mildly. "How did that come to pass?" Judy Eastman was many things but she was not to be underestimated. Humans were considered one of the softer species, with their inclination for equity and diplomacy, but Fellin knew well their species' history and dogged determination. Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]Judy smiled gently, able to take pride with the benefit of hindsight. "Well, we were tasked, back about 8 months ago, with transporting a group of terrorists, Arkarians, to stand trial on Arkaria. We hit an anomaly - unrelated - and the terrorists figured they'll make the best of it. Not that it worked for them."She took a quick sip of water, a brief pause, as she hit a convenient turning point in the story. "The prosecutors saw a fine opportunity to add on a few extra charges over the escape attempt, and they found an excellent witness right here."She stood up, to perform. "So I come into the courtroom, limping from a sprained ankle, and I tell the full story, with all the emotion that I have. You know, a performance. They have jury trials on Arkaria."She sat back down, having finished her performative limping. It was a skill she'd mastered, having suffered more than enough leg injuries in reality. "So now some of the sharpest legal minds on Arkaria are in my debt."

[ Apazi Fellin | CO's Office, Frontier Station ]Judy took to her feet and Fellin recrossed his legs to give due attention. Who knew the legal systems on Arkaria fancied the dramatic? He could certainly see how Judy could delivered a juror or few with this pantomime as an example. "Well, naturally," Fellin said with feeling. "And so gracious that you'd spend a token like that on an old man's stone fruit." He finished the chocolate chip cookie and wiped his hands together to shoo away the crumbs. "Mmm. What else? I'm sure you have other stories. People don't tell you this, but there is nothing sleepy about this corner of things." Fellin felt a little like he'd been had, coming here to the edges for a slower pace of life. But by his sly smile it was clear he wasn't at all unhappy with how things had gone. Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]Judy smiled. She had charmed the prosecutors as much as she had the jurors, so a shipment of fruit was no big deal. As for stories... she leaned her head back and laughed; there was indeed a lot going on out here. "Oh, don't I know it."She ran a hand through her hair, setting it in order, and reached into the proverbial grab-bag of stories. "The fun thing out here is dealing with the Admirals. There's a rotating cast, and each one has a different, strong opinion, so I get to spend six months trying to persuade them that we shouldn't kick the Nybberites off the station, and then, when I suddenly get the feeling the Nybbies are in fact up to no good, lo and behold, HQ has made a 180. Go figure."There was a lot classified, but talking smack about the Admirals was good, clean fun.

[ Apazi Fellin | ]The Nyberrite Alliance. They were a major player in this and nearby sectors but Fellin had no experience with them. Judy's blithe summation indicated she'd had plenty for both of them. "You laugh?" he commented. "The rumors must be exaggerated then." He scratched behind his than recrossed his arms. He elaborated. "There was an admiral killed in a training exercise with the Alliance, I had heard. That wasn't here, then." Fellin hadn't paid particular attention to the story, seeing as how he was neither Starfleet nor Alliance and an accident was an accident. At the end of the day, they were all only several inches away from the vacuum. Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]Judy took a deep sigh as Fellin mentioned an Admiral killed. With Perry's disappearance so sudden, she still didn't think of the man as dead, and yet... he almost certainly was. "That was here. Commodore Calvin Perry, my predecessor, was injured, severely, while testing a fighter. We managed to stabilize him, put him on a transport for Earth, and then it just disappeared, with him on it."Perry's brief tenure, and the unfortunate event that ended it, had cast in Judy's mind a role for herself, as a guardian of stability, protecting the crew from further tumult. It was an incident that informed her captaincy, even more than the events on Caldonia.

[ Apazi Fellin ]"By the Prophets," Fellin said, taken aback. The truth of the matter was, if such things could be ranked, worse than the garbled fiction. "That's terrible. And there's no trace? Is there any chance the ship's merely lost? I suppose it's been months now. Or more?" It was a horrible thing, the missing. It didn't matter the culture or the species, a heart was lost without the closure of a the loved one's body. Such a thing wasn't uncommon in the Dominion War, and many including the Apazi family had those aching questions haunting them. The feeling subsided but never passed. Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]Judy sighed deeply. "Two months, and still nothing," she confirmed. She took another cookie and ate it, letting the words hang. "It's almost enough to make one question if this position is cursed."The series of misfortunes the crew had suffered, the turnover in the CO's chair, and especially Perry's presumed untimely death, all seemed like an awfully awful coincidence.

[ Apazi Fellin | ]Fellin was thoughtful for a moment. He could see that this whole thing bothered his old friend acutely, as well it ought to. Be it a pattern, a curse, or a conspiracy, someone was next in line. "We believe that everything happens for a reason," Fellin said of his religion, shying very close to cloying platitude, but he continued more practically. "I wonder who stands to benefit from instability in this quadrant. What's so special here?" He picked a bit of lint from his trousers and rolled it absently between his fingers. It was a larger question than what would make a successful Bajoran retire to a remote Federation station to roll hasperat. Judith Eastman

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Commanding Officer's Office]"Oh, you'd be surprised. This place is more strategic than it looks."With a few clicks, Judy projected a regional map on the conference table. "We've got the Tholians right here, and given their paranoia, they'd really rather not have the Federation right here against their backsides. The Nyberrites would probably rather not have too much Starfleet so close to their front door. And then there's Caldonia..."The tone of resentment Judy put behind the word Caldonia was unmistakable.
