[Eta Borir - LZ-2 Colony, Kerelia] Eta was not particularly eager to observe the climax of the festival. At least not when she had something better to do. Who knew that when the Bajorans broke their fast, the Cardassians might not be on the menu? No, she pushed such thoughts aside as they came up. " What are we supposed to do? Eat hasperat? I bet there is no kanar down here." At that, she rolled her pupils in the corners of her eyes.
Tag Syl O'Connell [Ens. Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - LZ-2 Shoreline]"Hey, they don't have any vodka, either. So that at least is nothing personal." After all, that was kind of the point of cultural festivals. To celebrate the culture of those hosting it, not catering to their visitors. She thought about asking why Eta had chosen to come to the festival in the first place, but realized that the morning starting with the murder of one of her people probably soured whatever reasons she had initially had. So instead, the human decided to change the subject to something a little safer. "So what do you do on the station?"

[ Vedek Dima Emmari, Apazi Fellin | Ha'mara Pavillion ] Fellin had better luck than Riyo in getting between the Gul and the Vedek, who was stooped from the Gul's kick but not at all quelled. Fellin supported him by the arm and shouted at the Gul to stand down, but the Vedek wasn't finished. He pulled away from the wiry Fellin and moved towards the Gul once more, bellowing in Dahkur-accented Bajoran. Something about bloody hands and bloody mouths, something about dead roads and empty nooses, something about angels and demons. Emmari was familiar with anger. It was an emotion that needed action to dissipate, it could be righteous or destructive. Some things had been so much simpler before, when there were no Bajorans holding him back from defending a religious ceremony. Now he must, what? Smile? No, he thought not. "Vedek!" Fellin tried again, placing both hands on the larger man's chest. "Not here!" Perhaps the Vedek slowed a little. The younger of the two ranjen monks was involved now, young and bored in his orders. He rolled upp his long sleeves and posted up to support the Vedek in a fighting stance learned from books. Judith Eastman, Jovireh Velal, Charlie Fox

[ Kova Sh'qaleq - N 3rd St., Colony, LZ-2, Kerelia] The notion that none of them were easy patients seemed quite familiar to Kova. She took a deep breath and shrugged. "Is that because of what happened on Caldonia... or were we difficult patients long before that?" It was a question she felt she already knew the answer to, and there was a part of her that didn't care to hear the answer. She could see the disturbance in the pavilion beginning to grow. Send in another Cardassian right in the midst of a group of Bajorans... what did anyone expect? It was as if disaster was calling upon them, but as far as Kova was concerned, she was turning a blind eye, a deaf ear and a severed antennae to those machinations. "Do you think it was a mistake coming back?" Kova asked. It was a loaded question, and likely a different answer for everyone. So many of them had made lives here. Others were bound by duty. It seemed like the right call at the time, but after coming back was that still the case? [ Shavan Th'zhaar - Plaza] Shavan smiled thinly, agreeing that they had been difficult patients long before Caldonia. At least in his case, he would have been, had he ever sought counseling before. All of this was bringing to the surface things that may have been already there, just better hidden. Kova also asked if coming back was a mistake, and he hesitated briefly, wondering if she expected an honest answer… and what an honest answer would be. Then he shrugged. “What happened hasn’t changed my reasons for coming here in the first place. I won’t give up and let them take that too.” Of course, he couldn’t speak for anyone else, and wouldn’t discourage her from leaving if that was what she wanted. All of them had different reasons for being here, and for coming back… so it was difficult to try to explain exactly what Starfleet meant to him. Shavan then glanced up as an actual fight broke out in the center of the pavilion. “Unless you really want to punch a Cardassian right now, I think it’s time we went somewhere less crowded.”

[Eta Borir - LZ - 2 Colony, Kerelia] Eta let out a hearty, loud laugh as Syl thought directly of vodka. Yes, there was some truth in that. "What am I doing there? Bugging others, stargazing, reading, playing holoprograms, meditate, drinking Kanar. The things you do when you originally landed in the Federation by accident, and now live on Cardassia, but still enjoy the Federation every year," she replied to the question of what she does on the station, laughing softly. Pleasure in the Federation sounded funny.

[ Kova Sh'qaleq - Plaza, LZ-2, Kerelia] As Shavan spoke, Kova wasn't nearly as surprised by his answer as she believed she should have been. There had always been something about Shavan that hinted at a depth... at layers that that seem inexhaustible. That there was always something else hidden beneath. She took a deep breath as his words settled upon her. "I can't say that I'm as enlightened as you are," Kova confessed. "I'm not even sure I know why I came here in the first place."Now, those words had been a lie. Yet, to admit the truth, even to herself was too painful. Ever since her expulsion from the Academy, Kova had been running away... with a tether. She'd only allow herself to run so far, yet always within reach of what she always believed she'd wanted. Yet, after Caldonia, perhaps it was more clear than ever, that Starfleet had been done with her a long time ago. It was only after Caldonia that she was finally beginning to realize it. "And if I stay, my reasons for doing so have to be different than what's kept me here."Once again, fate tempted her. As the fight in the pavilion began to break out, her first inclination was to try to find a way to bring order to the chaos. Yet, at the end of the day, this wasn't her problem. Falling into old habits wasn't going to set things right. She turned towards Shavan, and for what felt like an eternity, she froze. Yet, it had barely been a second when she finally responded, "Let's go," she said, literally turning her back on the chaos behind her, ready to be led anywhere that wasn't there.

[Ens. Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - LZ-2 Shoreline]The fact that Eta didn't live on Front Ear certainly explained her not recognizing Syl as one of the Left Behind. She wondered if the Cardassian had even heard of the Caldonia Five. Syl found it refreshing to talk to someone who wasn't walking on eggshells, picking their words carefully, fearing her righteous ire. Or ignoring her completely out of lack of knowing what else to do. "Sounds like a good time," she replied. "I'm a pilot. Only had a few days on the station before my first mission kept me away for a couple months, though." That sounded better than 'before I was imprisoned in a concentration camp'. "So I'm still finding ways to keep myself occupied in my downtime."

[Lt. Paawin Riyo - Kerelia - Colony Pavilion]Now with Lea and the kids out of sight, Riyo was able to focus his attention entirely on the rising accusations before him. He couldn't tell if Dima was serious, or only taking his anger out on the Cardassian, and he wasn't sure he wanted to know. The insults got worse as the voices got louder, and the entire ritual had finally ceased as all eyes were upon them. Before he could say anything else, Dima grabbed du Toollame, who fired off another insult that made Riyo's own temper flare. He lunged forward, intending to put himself between the vedek and the gul, but felt a strong hand grab his arm and yank him backwards. As he turned to face the person behind him, he saw the grey uniform and scaley neck from the corner of his eye, and before he fully realized what he was doing he completed the turn by landing a punch to the guard's face. Prophets, he'd been wanting to do that for 20 years. The guard, having been punched, spat on his assailant, a tooth coming out in the process. Unmoved, he swung back just as hard, aiming for the Bajoran's face. [Charlie Fox - Ha'mara Pavillion, LZ-2]"He did not just -"He did. It was then that Charlie bothered to halt her exit, and she turned on her heel, expression reflecting the anger bubbling up inside, tightening her chest and colouring her cheeks. She flicked her wrist, fingers splayed, and Olsen hovered back toward the scene of the scuffle to record it. There was no way she was letting these Cardassians get away with taking over this event, not without showing the rest of the Federation just what "peace" meant to the Bajorans' former oppressors. As Mabel called for Security back-up, Charlie stepped closer toward her, slipping off the backpack she was carrying and dropped it to her feet. "Stay back, Mabel," she cautioned as a Cardassian guard, thrown off-balance by a well-aimed punch, stumbled backward toward the pair. Charlie reached out a hand, intent on pulling Mabel toward her and out of the danger zone. Her eyes flashed, gaze searching, and instinct kicked in. Brawls happened in prison all the time, sometimes they had erupted right next to her, sometimes she or her people had been the target but the end result was that she'd learned how to stay out of it. Sort of. Another guard veered too close, but Charlie already had her PADD in hand. Utilising a code and trick she'd learned from Kova herself, she transferred orders to the small, but solid, holodrone, and sent him knocking into the cranium of a Cardy. To a casual observer, he'd look a little drunk as he unsteadily tried to find his feet, eyes rolling upward into the back of his head before falling to his knees. Mabel Henriksen & Gul Guillaume Marie-Étienne François Henri-Pierre Thierry du Toollamé - Colony, LZ-2]It was very lucky for Mabel that Charlie chose to rescue her, considering the young woman wasn't exactly light on her feet. Good with a rifle (type-2 phaser rifle or super soaker), yes, but not light on her feet. "Thank you," she said briefly, before running away. The guard that Olsen had clocked seemed out of commission, at least for now, as Mabel moved past him. Elsewhere, the Gul had just about had enough. "Help! Help!" he yelped to the Starfleeters, pretending he had not provoked the fight. "I've been assaulted by this monster-man. Help!"

[Lt. Paawin Riyo - Kerelia - Colony Pavilion]Riyo wasn't sure what he was expecting after he threw the punch... After all, he hadn't even been fully aware of throwing it until he felt his fist connect with the guard's jaw. As a blood-soaked tooth flew towards him, he stepped back, but still felt the solid sting of the other man's fist against his cheekbone. He'd never been much of a fighter... His entire role in the resistance was medical. But too much had been building for too long... A body could only hold so much grief and anger before it overflowed, and a time would come when even the most passive person had enough. Screams and shouts filled the pavilion around him as he moved back towards the burly guard, reaching out with one hand to grab the front of the Cardassian uniform, pulling him in to his other fist that struck towards the man's jaw once more. This time, he didn't stop at just the one. Thoughts of self-defense and ending the disturbance were gone from his mind. Now it was just a past filled with gruesome loss, a ten year old boy using a dermal regenerator for the first time on a disruptor wound, a clinic full of patients with the walls caving in around them, and a face that represented the cause of every single death in his life. His fist rained down in a fury, not caring where it landed so long as it hit with every ounce of decades' worth of rage and pain fueling it.

[Crewman Ezra Mora - Conference Room LZ-2, Kerelia] "Aye, sir," Ezra said as Lieutenant Niles to him to proceed with his audit of the data. As Mora sat down, he began to bring up the logs that they had access to. He then began to write the algorithm to cross-reference the various logins by Murra and cross-reference the man's location at the time. As the hits came up, they showed a direct overlap of the login with Murra's location. There didn't seem to be an discrepancy. Ezra began to wonder if the culprit had actually thought of that and found a workaround. If they had, then there would be no way to narrow down the falsified logins. However, he then heard an acknowledging chirp as two different incidences popped up where Murra's location didn't match his particular login. "Captain... Lieutenant, I may have found something," he said alerting the officers. He quickly proceeded to delve further into the discrepancies. "One of the false entries occurred right around the time of death. The other occurred approximately... eighteen hours earlier." Mora continued to sort through the data and bring it up on display for the others to see. "There's only one bio-signature located at those logins. They belong to... hmm, looks like it's encrypted as well. Give me a moment," Ezra took a deep breath. He tried to recall a few simple tricks he'd learned from a friend. He ran the signature through several known ciphers and eventually got a hit. He then pulled up the data on the screen. It was was a superficial concealment. Clearly, they didn't expect anyone to delve as deeply as they had. "I've got a match. Ito Eka... she's Bajoran. And her file says that she's an IT tech." That would certainly qualify as her having the means and probably the opportunity as well. Now the question was could they tie it all together? [ LT Joshua Niles - Grandview Conference Room, Colony Ops Building, LZ-2, Kerelia ]Perhaps there was no such thing as red herrings or Occam's Razor in engineering, but there certainly were those in the tactical world; as Sun Tzu, who was still a required reading for officers who chose that kind of specialization, had written, all warfare was based on deception. And so much as he respected Captain Eastman's opinions and insights, he could not agree with her just now. "Honestly, Captain, while I see some elements of a crime of passion, so to speak, there's a degree of sophistication at play that just doesn't line up with it. You said that the why and the how were connected, and right now, at least to me, a retaliatory killing based on grief and vengeance doesn't jive with the kind of technical groundwork involved here. Not when there are so many other much simpler ways to do it that can be easily written off an an accident, or unsophisticated ways to cover one's tracks."He was not going to claim to be a star investigator, but he was approaching the matter as a tactical problem; one wouldn't associate clever tactical tricks and misdirection to a gang of smash-and-grab pirates, just like even Romulans for all their guile and cunning tended to overcomplicate things to the point that even a simple smash-and-grab left telltales of their presence. Though of course he wasn't about to argue with the Old Lady, this would be a losing proposition for anyone save perhaps flag officers. But that was another story all right... And just then, Mora came back with something. A connection to one Ito Eka, IT technician. That was a start, and it brought up one more question to Niles' mind. "Well done, Crewman. Now, here is something else I think can help us. When did she arrive here? Murra had been here for what, a year now? Of all the Bajorans on our list, who has been here from the start, got here about the same draft as Murra, and who's been here for, say, over three months? If anyone had the intent to kill him, they definitely had plenty of chances to do it until now and they either decided against it, or didn't think him worth it. More recent arrivals, though, might not have had that kind of attitude, or provided the catalyzing agent that led to it."Again, this was hardly his specialty, but things were starting to make a degree of sense here. Now, it was possible those personnel records would be beyond the clearance level Mora was working with, but the Captain was here, and if anyone could get to that, it would be her all right. Though, in the meantime, the Lieutenant tapped his commbadge. After all, it was not as though they could not tap into the colony's communications grid. =A= "Miss Ito Eka, this is Lieutenant Niles, Starfleet Security. I would need to speak with you, in person, in the Grandview Conference room if you please."=A= Now, he knew he couldn't really order a civilian around; especially not one who was even peripherally in Doctor Keltner's orbit; hell, if anything they might take their cue from their boss and decide their collaboration was entirely optional if they chose they really didn't feel like it. Which had meant he had couched his 'request' politely and diplomatically. But there was also another motive to this invitation, rather than call Security Dispatch to have her brought in: if she came in willingly, then it would mean that if she was involved she could be reasoned with; if she ran or refused to come, well that would inform the conduct of the follow-on conversation, and then there would be a pair of fellows in Starfleet gold shirts with phasers at their hips who would be informing her of her next destination and making sure it would happen, with as much or as little gentleness as her reactions would warrant. [Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & PO2 Roland L. Jenkins - Grandview Conference Room]Eka's heart sank. =A= "I can't. I'm in the jungle, camping," =A= she said. For indeed she was, having headed out in the morning. It wasn't a good way to celebrate Ha'mara, but it was the right move under the circumstances. Inside the conference room, Judy looked at Josh with utter disappointment. Again. "Bad move, Lieutenant," she said frankly. "We would've wanted to read into all that information, into everything that we can, before calling her in. You just can't go into an investigation - or anything - blind, if you can possibly help it.""Now, before she gets here, I want you to review her personnel file. Mr. Mora, look at our other Bajorans who've been here for the same amount of time... which would be three months, since we identified the site. I'll look over the financial disclosure form we made them fill."
Such things were, naturally, reserved for those of a certain rank, but there they were. "Mr. Jenkins, we may need you to stall."

[Eta Borir - LZ-2 Colony, Kerelia] Well, sensitivity was not necessarily a Cardassian's strong point, and Eta was only too willing to learn what was going on in Syl's head. This woman was somehow ... interesting. "What’s it like to be a Starfleet officer?" she asked, pressing her hair further into the sand, even though she would surely have to wash it later. There was enoug water here.

[ Shavan Th’zhaar - Kerelia Colony] Shavan snorted a little. He didn’t know if his outlook was really all that enlightened. Stubborn or stupid was probably more like it. “I just… need to make this work, for now.”
He considered what Kova said about not knowing what brought her here, and needing a different reason now. “What would make you want to stay?” Reasons to leave were obvious. Reasons for staying were much less so, but there was a lot more to Kova than she let on. Of course, he wouldn’t actually push for a more detailed answer, if she wasn't ready to give it. And he appreciated that she was doing the same. Already instinctively slipping away from the chaos, Shavan started to lead the way toward the outskirts of the colony, away from both the pavilion and the crime scene. Whatever was going on was not something he especially wanted to get mixed up in right now. Soon enough, the half-constructed buildings were blocking the plaza from view. "That's more like it." Not that there were many places to go… but anywhere more quiet would do. Especially considering the conversation they'd been having, whether they continued it or not. Kova Sh'qaleq

[ Kova Sh'qaleq - Kerelia Colony] Kova turned Shavan's question over and over in her mind. What would make her want to stay? She had every reason in the quadrant to leave, especially after severing her official ties. Taking a deep breath, the Andorian attempted to explain as best she could. "It'd have to be something I wanted for myself," Kova attempted to explain. "Not some cause or obligation. Just being as selfish for once." The absence of the chaos back at the pavilion seemed so distant. Kova wasn't even certain how far they had traveled to find this solace. "I've spent a lifetime making everyone else's problems my own. I almost feel guilty for wanting this for myself." Her eyes shifted towards Shavan. "Does any of that make any sense?" Kova was convinced she'd descended into mindless drivel, yet she'd never had to explain herself before. Usually, people didn't care enough to ask what she thought or how she felt.

[Crewman Ezra Mora - Conference Room] Ezra nodded at Lieutenant Niles' reasoning to see if there was anyone else that had arrived about the same time as Ito with a similar profile. As he commenced with his scan, he overheard the response from the Ito woman, stating that she was in the jungle. Why would she turn down a summons? True, it could be a pain to trek back into the colony, but it was certainly unexpected. Captain Eastman then ordered Mora to see if there were any other Bajorans that had arrived at about the same time as Ito. Mora's scan occupied most of his attention, but he casually glanced in the direction of the both the Captain and the Lieutenant after their brief exchange. His console beeped recapturing his attention before he delivered his discovery aloud. "Captain, there weren't any other Bajorans that arrived during that time period from the Dakhur Province. The only other person of note is one... Vedek Dima Emmari."

[ Shavan Th’zhaar - Kerelia Colony] Shavan listened to Kova’s response as they walked. It wasn't how he felt, but the way she put it made sense. He had suspected for a while now that underneath her prickly attitude, she was a far better person than he was. Or than anyone gave her credit for. Hearing it out loud just made it harder to open up more in return. “I won’t pretend to feel the same way, exactly.… but yeah, that makes sense. You’ve got to look out for yourself, or who else will?” He smiled sadly, not quite meeting her eyes. “No one else chose this for me. It was an opportunity I had to take.”Shavan hadn’t joined Starfleet out of obligation. He had come here to prove to himself that he could, and to escape what had come before. Now, he still had those reasons to stay… and maybe more. The Pit had broken and exposed something in him, but he couldn't see yet whether it would end up reinforcing what was already there, or evolve into something new. Kova Sh'qaleq

[ Kova Sh'qaleq - Kerelia Colony] There was a hint of comfort that what she'd said made some sense... at least to Shavan. Kova wasn't certain how much sense she could make of it herself, at least in words. Yet, his stating that she had to look out for herself did seem to hit home. She'd spent a great deal of time looking out for others, and it had been rare that the sentiment was actually returned. He did make it a point of saying that no one else had chosen this for him, and somehow it sounded as if it was a decision he had to take. It was cryptic, but certainly more than she'd ever gotten out of him before. "Is there any chance that you're wrong?" Kova asked. "I mean... maybe there was another choice. Something other than Starfleet and... whatever came before?" Yet, that was the question: what had come before? It wasn't as if she expected Shavan to just open up then and there about his past. Yet, perhaps he had overlooked something... or perhaps he had an option now that he didn't have before.

Vedek Dima Emmari." [ LT Joshua Niles - Grandview Conference Room, Colony Ops Building, LZ-2, Kerelia ]No sooner had he concluded his call that once again he had been reminded of his failings. At this point, it took all of his willpower not to slam his fists on the expansive table before him; hell, he wouldn't be surprised if the next thing he was told was that he was breathing wrong. And being told to make sure he had all the information in order to investigate? That was bloody rich coming from the Captain given that she had made it abundantly clear that he did not rate access to what he needed to know by himself. Which was why she had sent him Jenkins to provide basic access, and there she was dealing with some higher-level documents. If neither she nor Jenkins were available, precisely how would he have been expected to do his job, if he could not have access to what he needed? And now she was telling him off about investigating without a full picture? This was turning into the sort of day that was going to be ending with him sitting with one of his precious few bottles of imported bourbon, and he might even decide to forego the glass at this point. With one key press, the young woman's file appeared before him with all of the relevant data about her, including that she was fairly young, lived alone, and had grown up in close proximity to Murra's concentration camp, and while he perused it, another flurry of his fingers pinned down the location she had answered his call from, and he tapped his commbadge once more. =A= "Lieutenant Niles to Security Dispatch; I am sending you a set of coordinates; you will find one Eka Ito, Bajoran female, in the vicinity. Collect her and bring her to the Grandview conference room."=A=
