Captain’s Log
The idea of two Captains for one crew may seem counterintuitive, but I think it works quite well. Thea and I still work closely together - we share a crew, after all - but she’s able to focus more on the ship, and I get to focus more on the station. It’s like our previous working arrangement, but ever so slightly better. I’m also quite proud of Thea, who has exercised command in sensitive situations for most of the past year; during her time as First Officer, she has learned much, but I’ve also learned a lot from her. I can only hope the new First Officer we will both share will be half as talented.
I will add, parenthetically, that Max is delighted that I'll be spending a lot less time in harm's way.
With this renewed focus on my role as the mayor, so to speak, of Front Ear Station, I was able to work with Bajoran diaspora groups in the region, as well as Bajorans in our community, to arrange a celebration of the Festival of Lights on Kerelia. Our LZ-2 colony is in advanced stages of construction, and with over 100 housing units already operational, we’re able to house the celebrants, as well as some of our own people, on the planet. It’s very much a family event, and we’re enjoying the company of some of the station’s youths.
The Festival of Lights celebrates the arrival of the Emissary, known to us as Captain Sisko. The holiday is themed around moving forward and embracing new beginnings, which Vedek Tallorin and I both felt makes our brand new settlement here the perfect site for a celebration.
Around us, construction is proceeding at full clip, but a few cranes working quietly in the background isn’t enough to disturb us. Dr. Keltner, the project engineer, saw to that.
{Click for Judy and Max's looks today} [Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD, Max Williams, Michael Eastman, & Louisa Keltner, PhD - N 3rd St, Colony, LZ-2, Kerelia]Squeezed into a bland 1000 hours time slot, the tour of the construction site was a curiosity to some, but clearly not a headlining event - that role was reserved to the Bajoran religious ceremonies of the day. As Judy walked along the paved street, accompanied by Max and their grandson Michael, the captain wondered how many of those there were turned off, whether by the subject matter or by the presenter’s style. “As you can see, we have a unique approach to our structures that we developed here at Warp Age Designs. Every building starts with a foundation, like a concrete slab. However, concrete really hurts sensitive ecosystems, so we have to use more sustainable, plant-based slabs, which we combine with a sophisticated, plastic-based moment-resisting foundation that’s dramatically stronger than conventional concrete reinforcement. It’s like starship materials, but not metallic,” Dr. Keltner explained, with more detail than most non-engineers (and many of the more space-borne engineers) necessarily wanted. Louisa Keltner was a human woman of average build, in her 40s, brown-haired and fair-skinned, with a midwestern accent and the sort of peppy countenance often described as fake. However, to her employees and the general contractor’s people, she was also a terrifying figure, prone to fits of rage. Almost every day, she threw her clipboard or hard hat at an employee. “Above the foundation, we use a large, prefabricated pegboard of sorts, that we lift on with a large crane. Then, we add the load-bearing walls, and they click into the pegboard with what are giant self-sealing stembolts. Then, onto that, we lift a large, dome-shaped shell, that follows Sivaoan ideas on distributing precipitation evenly across the building. We can fit a whole house onto an empty slab like this in the course of an hour.”Louisa hopped onto a slab of brown concrete, with a variety of white plastic members sticking out of it. A crane towered over her, with the warm morning sun behind it. {Content warning: dead body}Hanging from the crane was the body of an elderly Cardassian man, hoisted about 20 meters into the air, dangling by his belt. "Grandma, what's that?" Michael asked quietly. Judy looked up at the crane, and promptly dropped her travel cup of decaf. Max's hand left its place on the waist of Judy's jumpsuit to cover Michael's eyes.

Syl really wasn't sure why she had decided to join the festival. Oh, that's right... She had been suffocating on the station. The silence, the sterility, and the mechanical vibrations had been slowly driving her mad. While she didn't necessarily feel like attending a festival full of people she didn't know, it was at least an opportunity to get her feet on solid ground once more.
So she trudged after the rest of the tour group, not listening to what the guide was prattling on about. Her gaze never stopped moving, taking in everything around them, and half expecting to see a Caldonian prison guard watching her. She hugged her arms tighter in front of her. The outfit she wore was as loose and awkward as all her other clothes. While her injuries had been healed, and her body given enough nutrients and hydration to function properly, she still had a long way to go before she could be called healthy.
The family in front of her stopped short, and she effortlessly sidestepped to avoid a collision. There was one benefit of spending a month dodging prisoners as they fell. She looked around to try and figure out what had made them stop, and didn't have to look hard. Her eyes widened as she stared up at the figure swinging slowly from the crane. Maybe she would have been better off staying on the station after all...

[ LT Joshua Niles - N 3rd St, Colony, LZ-2, Kerelia ]
Taking leave was something that felt... decidedly alien to one Joshua Niles. Whenever watch rotations allowed for days off, he certainly took them, but he still had to get some paperwork in order even on those days. But to take actual leave and walk away from his duties and responsibilities? That had been something he'd not done before in his career. Granted, the Academy was known for granting a few weeks between semesters for Cadets to decompress, but it was something that was part of the school routine, so to speak.
And to think he had heard the stories of personnel who'd accumulated years worth of downtime over the course of their careers, and would effectively retire long before their intended resignation date...
And to think he'd considered those legends to be the mark of a good officer not that long ago. But at least, his close proximity to the likes of one Judy Eastman had changed those views to some degree. Something about not killing himself at work, because it less a marathon than a long, steady march. So, with a Bajoran festival taking place on the surface, he opted to join such excursions, and as luck would have it, he found himself on the same tour as the Old Lady herself...
And much like her, he'd been enjoying coffee out of a travel mug... until the group fairly screeched to a halt and they were greeted by the sight of a body hanging from a crane, swaying lazily in the light morning breeze. And just then, the fact that children were present completely escaped his mind. "Oh f*ck me,", he blurted out, the low volume of his voice being the only saving grace of his reaction.

[Eta Borir - Colony, LZ-2 , Kerelia]
The Cardassian's fingers routinely flew over the padd, checking for new messages. Finally, she dropped the brown Cardassian-style padd into her pocket and took a deep breath before putting her lower lip between her teeth and biting down on it. Why had she come to this party when she was probably the most unwanted person there. If it were being held on Bajor, she would have canceled long ago. She ambled around in the background of the tour group, keeping her gaze stoically fixed on the objects the tour guide was pointing at, while definitely not focusing her attention on a Bajoran. Eye contact with this species was not really an experience one liked to share, at least not as a Cardassian.
She was wearing classic Cardassian clothing. The last thing she wanted was Bajoran clothing on her Cardassian-influenced body. Bajorans tended to be cute, small and petite, while Cardassians were awkwardly built. The only thing this species could be proud of was that she could already fit through a Starfleet door.
Her gaze wandered over everyone present as she kept bumping her fingertips and thumb against each other. Her face wasn't exactly the definition of happy, but it could be worse.
The group was motley. Humans, Trill, Bajorans. Cardassians were also represented by Eta. Her eyes turned away from the group and wandered for herself. When she spotted something, in which direction obviously other people were standing. More bad than good she tried to identify the object and discovered something not really great. A corpse. Apparently dead. Or unconscious. She pulled the Cardassian cloths at the nape of her neck a little higher to cover the goosebumps that were gradually creeping down her back to the tops of her feet.
The pale woman rubbed the flat of her hand over her face and held it over her mouth a little longer. She squeezed her eyes shut and grabbed the root of her nose with her fingertips before the thick and traced lashes rose again. She grabbed her cheeks with both hands, trying to shake off the numbness. Slowly, she walked toward the man, apparently seeing the same guy hanging from the crane. "That's not what I think it is, is it?"

[Charlie Fox - On a boring tour, LZ-2, Kerelia]The last time Charlie had been on Kerelia she'd been tackled, attacked, run ragged and of course, Olsen had been pelted with rocks by some unknown woodland assailant. As such, she was dressed appropriately, ready for a repeat occurrence. She'd heard enough stories, mostly involving Isaiah Quinn, about how vile this "paradise" could be, so she wasn't taking any chances. Hiking boots, a thermal vest, a large hunting knife swinging from her belt and a backpack full of useful tools that one might need to try and survive a night on Kerelia - all much better than loose-fitting ceremonial garb. She ambled along after the tour group as Olsen hovered in the air above Keltner, recording her speechifying. In truth Charlie was hoping that the engineer would have one of her infamous fits of pique, and she could catch the abuse on camera. No such luck though, likely because of the Captain's presence. Charlie avoided even glancing in Judith Eastman's direction. Simultaneously, she avoided looking in the Cardassian's direction, too. She had no idea why the Cardy would even want to be here; but then they were known for being willfully, emotionally dense when it came to sensitive issues, like the ones the Bajorans might have after decades of systematic oppression. Neither side of the group seemed in any way appealing, so the journalist kept herself to herself, grimacing through this working vacation she'd been sent on. Olsen, her spherical holorecorder, swiftly changed direction. Thinking that the unexpected movement signaled something much more interesting than the engineer's lecture, Charlie's eyes immediately flew upward to follow the drone's progress against the pretty sky. She stopped moving when she saw the hanged man. She made a disgusted noise. "Really, Keltner? What a great tour."Olsen was circling the dead Cardassian, getting all possible angles. In harsh contrast, others on the ground tried to look away. "What's the plan for afterwards? How about we all march toward the caves by LZ-1, rouse a few thousand tritters?"She was pissed off, disturbed and defensive. Automatically she began moving in Syl's direction; a strange new habit formed between five, forged by weeks in The Pit.

[ Kova Sh'qaleq - Colony, LZ-2, Kerelia] She honestly wasn't sure why in the frozen hells she was here. It was only marginally better than being on the station. That was likely due to the company... or at least one person in particular. Kova watched as Captain Eastman seemed to stroll rather merrily along, with her family, seemingly without a care in the world. Alongside her husband... her grandson in tow. Kova wondered if she'd given any sort of thought to the families of everyone she'd left behind? The Andorian was familiar with the company line: following orders. Just how readily would Eastman have left it had been her husband that had been captured... or her grandson even? To hell with her... and to hell with this tour. Kova was still trying to determine why she was still here at Frontier Station. She could just leave. Pack up and start over somewhere else. Though, doing that felt like even more punishment, something Kova felt like a bit of an authority on after the last month of being held captive in Caldonia's Pit. Kova was over this tour. She perched herself on a stack of materials while the rest of them paraded around listening to the human brag about some buildings. She reached into her pocket and removed a flask, which had Andorian Ale within it. This was supposed to be a festival. So what if she got festive a bit early. She brought the flask to her lips and took a sip. Though, as she tilted her head back, her eyes caught sight of a body that seemed to be hanging from a crane. Kova lowered the flask and continued to stare at the sight. She could hear the excitement start to spread among the others. She then lowered her eyes and brought the flask to her lips once more. This was decidedly not her problem.
[Crewman Ezra Mora & Rimi Mora - On the tour, Colony, LZ-2, Kerelia] & "If you ever wanted a glimpse of the after-life, keep watching. I'm bound to die of boredom any minute now," Rimi said into her comm-unit as she live streamed out to her platform. She soon felt her father's hand upon her arm, forcing her to lower the device. She cut the stream and rolled her eyes. This had been her life, ever since that stupid doctor felt obligated to run their mouth about a high that went a little wrong.[fn]DT - Confidential[/fn] "Put it down, and pay attention," Ezra said sternly. This was supposed to be one of those bonding events. Him spending more time with Rimi, making certain that she knew that she was a priority. At least that was what the counselor had suggested. Of course, Rimi seemed more annoyed than ever. "Pay attention? What do I care about plastic buildings or whatever," Rimi snapped. Ezra sighed and shook his head. "This is a chance to learn some culture," Ezra countered. "Not my culture!" Rimi said. Her voice may have carried a bit as she took a few steps away. She lifted her camera to start streaming again, but this time she caught a glimpse of something in the backdrop. Her eyes narrowed and finally she turned to see a body hanging from above. Her eyes were transfixed. She couldn't bring herself to move... or scream. She was frozen, just as she had been back in the bar.[fn] S2E3 - Customs[/fn] Ezra took a deep breath, trying to calm himself before he (verbally) bit his daughter's head off with an audience. As he moved after her, he did so attempting to be a bit more calmer. He knew what learning about her Trill heritage meant to her, but it wasn't exactly something he could explain as easily as disassembling a dilithium chamber. "Listen, Rimi, I...." He found himself going silent as his daughter seemed to be transfixed on something behind him. As murmurs began to grow in the crowd, Ezra turned and quickly saw what had his daughter's attention. He turned back to her, and reached to guide her head downwards. "Don't look."Perhaps the appropriate thing to do would be to comfort his daughter. To hold her, and assure her that everything would be all right. However, it wasn't. Miori[fn]Ezra's wife, Rimi's mom (deceased)[/fn] would have remembered that. Ezra quickly moved over towards Captain Eastman. "Captain, should I bring the body down?" he asked. He was confident he could work the controls to bring the body down. At least it wouldn't continue to be a spectacle. However, he knew this was a crime scene, and there was something to be said for preserving the scene. But to leave the body just hanging there for everyone to gawk at... kids included....

[ Shavan Th'zhaar - Colony, LZ-2, Kerelia] Shavan didn't know exactly what he was doing there, except that getting off the station and doing things like this was supposed to be healthy. So, even though he didn't know or care about Bajoran holidays, he went, just to get on with it and be doing something. He walked along at the back of the tour group, not paying much attention. Hanging back, he eventually gave up on listening and decided to go someplace quieter until the festival started. That was when he spotted Kova; she was one of the few people he could stand to be around right now, and seemed to be thinking along the same lines. He wasn't sure if he’d actually been fully sober since they got back from Caldonia. Silently, Shavan climbed up and took a seat on the pile of materials next to her. Noticing that she was looking at something else, he followed her gaze to the body hanging from the crane. Well. That was… something. As out of place as it might have been, he couldn’t really make himself feel anything. “That’s just typical, isn't it?” He suppressed a humorless laugh. Kova Sh'qaleq

Ha'mara, also called the Festival of Lights, is a Bajoran holiday celebrating the arrival of the Emissary of the Prophets. Bajorans faithful fast from sundown to sundown, and as soon as night falls, there is a big feast. There are several ceremonies throughout the day to tell the story of the Emmissary and Bajor's liberation. Non-Bajorans are welcome to participate in many of the events, although some are only meant for Bajorans.[ Vedek Dima Emmari, Apazi Fellin | Construction site ] While the mood of the non-Bajorans was largely cynical, dour, and hopeless, the sentiment of the several dozen Bajoran here on beautiful Kerelia was bursting and jovial. The gnawing of the full-day fast had begun to creep in a little, but it was easy enough to ignore among the ritual, reunion, and festivities. They'd risen at dawn, they'd bathed in a stream, and they'd lit candles. Now, many of them joined a tour of the settlement. It was about two hours before noon when they'd seek the shade for a meditative ceremony. Dima Emmari, the Bajoran Vedek who would oversee this Ha'mara, had arrived three days ago and had been on planet so he and two lesser monks could ensure preparations. There would be Bajoran faithful from all over the sector but also visitors and guests. Now, clad in the habit of his order, he looked the perfect part of Vedek. All that belied his alleged past in the violent Resistance was a particular bearing he had, and the particular way some of the older Bajorans greeted him. They called him Vedek Ishka, roughly Wolf Priest. He was in animated conversation now with Apazi Fellin, a Bajoran who'd recently retired from reconstruction and logistics to roll hasperat on Frontier. "The Prophets guide Bajor to atonement apart from time," Vedek Dima was explaining to Fellin. His voice was gravelly and colorful. He spoke with his hands. "To them all things have always occurred and will occur and are occurring simultaneously." "And yet our bodies remember an order of things," Fellin said, keen to argue with the cleric. "My hand didn't bleed before my knife slipped. You were not limping around like a bent grandfather last night." Vedek Dima laughed, slowing his admittedly stilted gait as the tour group appeared to have stalled. "The Prophets are not ignorant to the fragility of our linear existence ..." He quieted his philosophizing and saw what all others were staring at. Neither Bajoran looked away from the hanged Cardassian. Vedek Dima continued. "In their wisdom, indeed, they would wield it." Then, he clasped his hand onto Fellin's shoulder in a farewell before using his substantial prestige to gain proximity to the Captain and Dr. Keltner. "I was assured work would be stopped, Dr. Keltner," he said. "And now this, a tragic accident. He must be lowered. There are children."

[NPC - Louisa Keltner, PhD - N 3rd St, LZ-2]For Louisa, the journalist's assault was unprovoked and wholly unwarranted. Familiar as she was with Charlie Fox's reputation, the engineer resented her presence here, meddling. "I don't know what you mean," she protested, all sweet. "I run an accident-free..."The Vedek's words led her to turn her head upwards. "Holy f*ck," she exclaimed. That body was that blasted Dr. Murra, and to one familiar with the site as she was, it couldn't be clearer. [Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD, Max Williams, & Michael Eastman - N 3rd St, LZ-2]Judy's mind was catching up with the situation, as she instinctively picked the cup of coffee back up. Littering was not her speed, even if bending down strained her knees. As she straightened back up, she met the junior crewmember who'd taken initiative. "Yes, please do, right away," she approved, ignoring her angry knees. "Good thinking, Mr... Mora, right?"After getting brief confirmation, she approached Lt. Niles, with a steady stride. "Lieutenant, we'll have to investigate. It's probably health & safety, but I'll need you on it."Following behind her was Michael, who kept his gaze on Grandma, but whose curiosity was piqued by a word he'd just heard twice. "Why do you want fudge, Loo-tenant Smiles?" he asked, carrying a mispronunciation he'd picked up from Mabel, who found a funny typo in a report. "And how can fudge be holy?"Max recognized that their sudden stop had nearly seen them bump into a young lady (Syl). He offered a quick, "Sorry about that," before continuing behind his wife and grandson.

[ LT Joshua Niles - N 3rd St, Colony, LZ-2, Kerelia ]No sooner had he let out his foul exclamation that activity erupted around the tour group, and when a voice asked him if it really looked like what it was, Niles could barely contain his sneer, especially when he saw he was dealing with yet another Cardassian; and having seen enough dead bodies, he certainly could tell... "Unless you're not thinking it's a corpse hanging from a crane twenty meters off the deck, then you'd be correct."His own displeasure was echoed by Charlie, who looked... rough from her stay in Caldonian captivity. They'd not spoken since the return of those poor souls who'd been left behind at one Admiral Ellis' orders... and he certainly didn't know what to say. Sorry we left you behind, I wanted to come down to get you guys the hard way but it was out of my hands didn't seem like it would cut any ice with the reporter. Or anyone else for that matter. However, activity started when Crewman Mora spoke up, and with the Old Lady's blessing made his way for the crane's controls, and then she turned her attention to her Tactical Officer. Investigate. Of course. Well, so much of his leave time all right. "Aye Captain. I'll have to see if I can find so much as a tricorder down here. And cooperation from the locals to cordon off the site and..."He found himself interrupted by a child... whom he recognized from pictures he had seen: one of the Old Lady's grandchildren! And he had a rather... sticky question to ask no less. One that made it clear he'd been heard... and that he was known... somehow. "I... ah... that just slipped out. As for being holy... some fudge is just that good, you know?"

[Ens. Syl O'Connell - Kerelia - Colony N 3rd St.]Murmurs and exclamations began to rise amongst the tour group as more and more people noticed the corpse. Charlie's voice caught her attention above all the others, but of course they were still in the habit of listening and watching for each other. She knew Kova and Shavan had been on the tour as well, and her eyes darted around until she found them sitting off to the side, disengaging from everything and everyone else. How badly she wanted to join them... This was not her problem, and making things her problem was how she ended up in the Pit in the first place. But Charlie was a reporter. She didn't have the luxury of disengaging from something as big as a corpse dangling from a crane. Syl's fingers trailed absently along the faint scars across her throat - a new RSB[fn]Repetitive Stress Behavior[/fn] she'd developed since they escaped the planet. She seemed to be collecting those like trophies. Decision made, she cast a forlorn glance at the two Andorians - and the flask that she noticed in Kova's hand - before turning and closing the distance between herself and Charlie. So caught up in her thoughts, Syl hadn't even heard Max's apology, nor realized that it had been the Captain's family that she'd almost walked into. Which was likely a good thing at this current moment. When she reached Charlie, Syl didn't say anything, but gave her a small smile and nod to let her know that she'd stay close. Others from Starfleet were leaping into action now that the initial shock had worn off, and Syl was grateful that she hadn't been cleared for duty yet. She wasn't ready to jump into anything. To immediately follow orders, or be the face of collected calm that civilians expected of Starfleet Officers. Part of her resented Charlie's superiors for expecting her to be back in the thick of things so soon. But while Syl couldn't do anything about that... she could at least be there for her, as they had all been there for each other for the past couple months.

It was different, but it looked good on them. Riyo hadn't worn his own traditional clothes in a very long time, but it felt even more natural and comfortable than the uniform he wore on a near-daily basis. Fastening his earring, he moved back into the living room just in time to see Lea untangling Aven's fingers from Ari's hair. It always made it heart soar to hear Aven call him Dada, and he had to focus on keeping his face stern as he walked over to take the little boy so his mother could help Ari. "Now, buddy, what have I said about pulling hair?" He asked as he made sure Aven was looking at him. "If you want to pull hair, you pull your own." As he spoke, he used his free hand to take Aven's hand and guide it to his own full head of fine hair. He really hoped this stage of testing boundaries passed quickly.

[Paawin/Mazal Accommodation - Colony, LZ2, Kerelia] Sensing her Imzadi as he entered the living room, Leanna looked up and smiled as Riyo then took Aven from her. Making it a lot easier for her to see to Ari, rather than having to become a referee again. Raising children wasn't all rainbows and kittens or my little targs if you were to think of Ari. However Lea had definitely been fortunate when Riyo had entered their lives and now he got to share and experience all of the bad and the good. Even if it was cute as hell to hear Aven call him 'Dada', which sometimes made it difficult to show discipline. Riyo was definitely doing a good job as he got Aven's attention. Watching whilst Ari calmed down to see what her son would do, preparing for the inevitable cry, if he pulled his own hair. Aven seemed to hesitate as Ari decided to speak up. "Aven you better listen to Dad.. Riyo".Lea knew that Ari was trying and didn't blame her for that after what had happened with the man whose name was no longer spoken. Although that didn't mean that she didn't love Riyo any less than Aven. Said one year old then proceeded to pull his own hair and instead of crying, started laughing. " I think we're going to have our hands full with this one" Lea commented as Ari left her embrace to go fetch her my little targ.

[Eta Borir - Colony, Lz2, Karelia]
" Well fantastic," Eta muttered pressed and turned her head away from the man. After all, someone was talking to her here. She was not an empathic being, yet she felt the looks of those present - or the avoidance of them, like a cheap perfume on her skin. Monks, Bajorans, and a dead Cardassian, now it was truly a Bajoran feast. With one hand, the Cardassian grabbed the scales that covered her skin on the back of her neck and massaged them briefly before trying to identify the Cardassian. Looked a little like....an acquaintance of her father. Still, she couldn't think of the name. Her father often brought home other Cardassians on Terok Nor, however, Eta had not had the desire, nor the nerve, to remember all the names. But at least the reporter's question had been easy to answer, so she would have asked it. Contacts. Cardassia and Bajor must finally begin to work more closely together and let bygones be bygones. Still, 41 years and millions of dead Bajorans were very hard to forget. She let her gaze wander again, discovering people who were probably even more bored than she was. She spun around in a flash when she heard the Bajoran's voice. >>My hand didn't bleed before my knife slipped. You were not limping around like a bent grandfather last night << Eta could almost sing along with this stuff. The Bajoran's celebrations were certainly interesting and filled with a lot of religion, and yet they were more soporific than Doctor Baker's hypospray before an operation.
