[Petty Officer Conor Lynch - Home Life Florals, Promenade, Front Ear]Conor Lynch could not quite believe that it had been six months since he'd last set foot on the Station. Six months since he'd had a decent, properly poured pint of stout from a tap! Six months since he'd seen his ma. Six months since he'd sat with Jovireh, just right over there at the Beta, nose healing from her fist, enjoying a meal and trying to pull a fast one on Lt. Sorcerer... He'd yet to see his ma, yet to leave his effects in her guest room. He had something to do first, something quite important. His overnight bag still slung over his shoulder, he paused and stared at the signage in front of the floral-smelling shop. He took a deep whiff, and instantly regretted it. But he would power through, it would be worth it. Wearing a simple grey tshirt and off-duty slacks with lace-up boots, he checked his appearance quickly in the pristine window and then stepped inside, where the smells that greeted him caused his eyes to immediately fill up with water. He ignored it and turned his attention to the array of beautiful flowers, and then the pots on the other side. What now? Lynch turned on the spot, momentarily overwhelmed. "Eh... Jaysis. How am I s'posed ta know?" Then he sneezed.

[Devra Kul - Front Ear - Home Life Florals]"Oh you poor dear!" A motherly voice declared from behind the counter. "Don't you worry, I have just the thing!" The woman disappeared into the back room, returning a moment later with a hypospray in hand. "Just a simple antihistamine. Will clear those allergies right up so you can focus on what's really important!" It was almost necessary to have it on hand at all times, considering the vast assortment of flowers from so many different planets. One never knew what they might be allergic to. She didn't ask the young man, but reached up to inject the spray into his neck anyway. "Now. Let's start with who you're wanting to buy flowers for. Wife? Girlfriend? Mother?" She paused a moment, considering him. "Boyfriend? Co-worker?" The nature of the relationship truly did help narrow down the options.

[Petty Officer Conor Lynch - Home Life Florals]Lynch jumped at the sound of the woman's voice, a little startled from his frantic flower browsing. How he hadn't seen her there, he had no idea, but now that he had, he could see that she was a handsome woman, and she wanted to fix him. His allergies, that is. She was on him in an instant, injecting him with drugs. Almost as soon as she'd finished the sentence though, he'd begun to feel better. His eyes had stopped watering furiously, and he only needed to sniffle once every five seconds, as opposed to five every one second. "Ah, much obliged, very kind o' ye." He grinned then, pleased by the relief and by the pleasant demeanour of this lady. He rubbed the injection site as she asked the question, taking a second to figure out how to answer. He'd have needed a minute or two to work it out, to be fair, but he didn't want to be rude and leave the shop attendant waiting. "She's my friend, I think. Maybe? It's kinda complicated, ya see, 'cause we met workin' out an' then we eh... we sparred. An' then she broke me nose! But t'was alrigh', my own bloody fault really, an' then we went fer lunch..."He trailed off, his cheeks colouring self-consciously. "She's special." There, that was better. "An' tha' was six months ago, I had to leave fer werk, an' I just wanted to show tha' I was thinkin' 'bout her." He looked at the lady, expression earnest. "Does tha' make any sense?"

[Devra Kul - Front Ear - Home Life Florals]Devra listened intently as the young man spoke, rambling through the story of how he met this possible friend. It didn't take long for her to realize that she had heard this story before, though from a wildly different perspective. The corners of her lips lifted in a proud smile, a twinkle of knowing in her black eyes. "She must be quite the lady if you're still thinking about her after all this time," she replied as he finished. "The next question to consider is what happens next?" This was the delicate part... Helping him sort through his own emotions without scaring him away. "Do you expect to be around for awhile to nurture this friendship... Or is it likely work will call you away for another extended time?" There was a science in deciding on the perfect flowers for someone, and the fact that she happened to know this particular young lady's favorite was only part of the equation.

[Petty Officer Conor Lynch - Home Life Florals]He nodded readily when he pointed out that Jovireh must be quite the lady. "I think abou' her every time I see me nose in the mirror."The next question wasn't quite as straightforward, nor was it at all easy to answer. "I've no notion as to wha' will happen next, none at all at all. I'd rather be here, on the station, an' tha's where I though' I'd be when I signed up, ye know? But then they pulled me away, between you, meself and the wall, I reckon they were punishin' me." He spoke conspiratorially, but then he nodded, sure of his theory. "I could be here fer two years or two weeks." He felt a bit defeated, and his shoulders dropped a little. He hadn't really put much thought into what that meant, nor if it was something he could fix. "Me ma does say tha' uncertainty is very unattractive."

[Devra Kul - Front Ear - Home Life Florals]The woman's smile brightened as he spoke. Unless he was one of those people who avoided mirrors at all costs, he was thinking about her quite a bit. That smile softened as his confusion and uncertainty, topped with a feeling of defeat, became more evident. "I will admit, there are plenty of women who prefer constant reliability. However, there are also plenty of women who remain planetside while their men are off among the stars in the name of duty." That had been true from the very beginning of every species. For as long as there have been wars, there have been women left behind. And while it didn't work out for every couple... It did work out for plenty enough. Devra turned to the wall with pre-cut flowers, and began selecting stems as she continued. "And every now and then, you'll find a woman whose work also takes her away. One who is independent, and understanding, and absolutely loves surprises... No matter how far apart they come." Of course, she couldn't make any promises on her daughter's behalf, but she knew her well enough to know what would happen if the young man showed up after all this time, saying he'd be on the station permanently and asking her for more than friendship. Jovireh would push him away so fast it would break a lot more than his nose. No, this uncertainty was for the best. It would let them enjoy the time they had together, let whatever feelings they might share develop naturally, and by the time his situation changed - if it ever did - she would be more likely to accept that she cared for him, too. The arrangement that Devra was putting together was, of course, the perfect one to take things slow while still moving forward. A bed of purple campanula for friendship, a couple pink peonies and blue Betazed tulips for romantic interest, and a center of stargazer lilies for acceptance of the distance between them.

[Petty Officer Conor Lynch - Home Life Florals]His nod was a bit sombre when she admitted that many women prefered reliability, but he perked up measurably again as she continued, talking about women who stayed at home, and women who also went away. "Jovireh seems very independent an' understandin'," he agreed quickly, marveling at this woman's intuition. "I've no notion as to how she likes surprises, mind." A worry began to niggle at him. "I hope she hasn't forgotten abou' me. Imagine, there's me jus' innocently ringin' her bell, cap an' flowers in hand an' she just goes, 'Who in the name of all tha's holy are ye?'" He succeeded only in horrifying himself. To recover, he pointed toward the colourful flora in the nice lady's hands. "Those are lovely."

[Devra Kul - Front Ear - Home Life Florals]Her lips quirked slightly when he said the name, pleased she had been correct in her assumption. Now, if her daughter tried to get mad at her, she could truthfully say that he told her who he was buying flowers for. "Oh, I highly doubt you'll have to worry about her forgetting you," she replied in a reassuring tone as she wrapped the bouquet. "It's not every day you make a friend by breaking their nose, after all." It had been awhile since Jovireh had mentioned Conor, but Devra assumed that was only because there had been nothing new to say about him. Her smile brightened as he complimented the arrangement. "Indeed. If it doesn't make her speechless, then I'm afraid nothing will." She tied off the wrapping and handed him the bouquet.

[Petty Officer Conor Lynch - Home Life Florals]"Tha's very true, so it is," he agreed, perking up quite a bit when the lady pointed out you weren't likely to forget the person whose nose you broke. Unless you got buckled and started fights in bars a lot, which he didn't think either he nor Jovireh were the types to do. He stepped forward and reached for the bouquet. They looked beautiful, and he was even able to smell them, thanks to the hypo that she'd given him. "Jovireh did indeed mention flowers durin' our lunch, said her ma was a florist." He smiled and then with his free hand, reached for his personal PADD. "Much obliged, Ms...?" He trailed off, realising a little belatedly that he did not know this talented woman's name. He stood poised and ready to make her acquaintance properly, and to transfer whatever was required for the flowers that would make a friend speechless.

[Devra Kul - Front Ear - Home Life Florals]Her smile tilted into a coy grin as the young man said that Jovireh had mentioned her mother being a florist. It was slightly surprising he hadn't put the pieces together yet, but then again... Six months ago she was still living on Earth, without even having the thought of moving. That alone might override any hints he would have otherwise picked up on. "Kul," she gave him her last name as his sentence trailed off. "But please, call me Devra. I've never liked stuffy formalities." And if all went well, perhaps some day she'd be his mother-in-law. Though she certainly wasn't going to scare the poor boy by saying such. When she noticed the PADD in his hand, she shook her head and waved it away. "This one's on the house. Now, you better run along before you lose your nerve." After giving him a reassuring pat on the shoulder, she moved back behind the counter. "May the four deities smile upon you. And don't forget to come back and tell me how it goes!" While she was sure she'd hear all about it from her daughter before too long, she doubted Jovireh would give her the details of her own reaction. Speaking of which... she quickly picked up her own PADD and typed in a brief message. DK: If you're not in your quarters, you should get there soon.

[Petty Officer Conor Lynch - Home Life Florals]"Ah, Devra, I'm Conor. A pleasure to make your acquaintance." He offered her a little half-bow, then straightened up with the flowers in hand and a smile on his face. When she insisted that he take the bouquet on the house he began to argue, feeling as though she should be paid not just for her lovely stock, but for her kindness to him, but he backed down quickly enough. Sometimes it wasn't worth arguing with a lady; and this one seemed to know what she wanted. When she gave him some sort of blessing he cocked his head, believing he'd heard it somewhere before... a Betazoid, that was it! Devra was a Betazoid. He'd thought her eyes were quite dark alright, but it was never polite to stare for too long. Jovireh had mentioned that her mother was a Betazoid, hadn't she? A Betazoid florist. Conor's smile only broadened - what a coincidence! "I will surely return with an update for ya, Devra. An' I will surely repay this kindness!"With another kind-of bow, and still clueless, he stepped out of the shop. He started off in one direction, stopped, turned, and headed off in the other. He'd already taken the liberty of checking the directory for Jovireh's listing. Most civilians weren't on it, but some officers, particularly Security ones, often had to be reached easily. *** He had stood outside her door for almost five minutes. The closer he'd gotten to her room, the further he felt from Devra's reassurances. He smoothed his grey t-shirt for the fifth time and twirled the bouquet, trying to decide which would be the prettiest angle for when Jovireh opened the door. "Jaysis man, jus' do it. Wha's she gonna do, break yer nose again?"He leaned on the door panel and activated the chime.

[PO1 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Private Quarters] Jovireh had gotten off duty a short while before, and had only had time to change into more comfortable pants and tank top and settle on the couch with a mug of tea and a novel when her message pad chirped from the coffee table. Sighing softly, she set the novel down and picked up the other padd, scowling in concern when she saw the message from her mother. DK: If you're not in your quarters, you should get there soon.
That was far more demanding than the usual request to spend the afternoon together, and Jov sat up straighter, setting the mug on the table before replying. JV: I'm here. What's wrong? DK: Oh nothing at all! JV: What's going on? DK: You'll see soon enough. Just stay there. DK: And maybe cancel any plans you have for the evening. Well that wasn't vague at all. At least it obviously wasn't an emergency, so she tossed the message pad back down without replying and picked up her mug and book once more. Leaning back against the armrest, she took a small sip and continued reading. A few pages in, she was interrupted once more, this time by the door chime. Another look of confusion crossed her face. No one stopped by without asking if she was home first, and her mother didn't close up shop for another couple hours. Taking another sip of tea before freeing her hands once more, she stood and crossed the room to open the door. It only took a moment for her to recognize the clearly nervous man standing in the corridor, and her face lit up in a bright smile. "Conor!" she greeted him excitedly, throwing her arms around his shoulders in a hug before stepping back to let him through the door. "Come in! I was beginning to think Soreer threw you in the brig and tossed away the key!" When they parted ways last time, she knew he would be in trouble when he got back to the Alliance, and assumed he wouldn't be allowed to visit the station for awhile. But she hadn't expected six months to pass before she saw him again.

[Petty Officer Conor Lynch - Jovireh's Quarters]Before Conor really had a chance to think anything, she was hugging him. A surge of relief went through him and then he felt a bit silly for worrying so much that she wouldn't remember him. A bit belatedly, he brought his arm up to return the hug, though he'd barely made contact when she was stepping back and inviting him inside. He stepped in to follow, and found himself grinning at the mention of their old nemesis. "Not for his lack of tryin'!" He told her, then shook his head. That Romulan had made his life very difficult, and he suspected that Sorcerer was trying to push him out of the Alliance. His had clenched into a fist, or it tried to, it was kind of hindered by the flowers. "Oh yeah! These are fer you!" He stretched out his arm, pushing the bouquet toward her. "S'been six months since I promised ta bring ya ta breakfast, I figured was the least I could do." He blushed a little, and shuffled his feet while he looked around her quarters under the pretense of being nosy. "Very pleasant lady in the shop on the promenade helped me pick 'em, so she did."

[PO1 Jovireh Velal - Front Ear - Private Quarters]As he held out the bouquet she somehow hadn't noticed earlier, her eyes widened as her jaw slightly dropped. No one had ever given her flowers before, and she wasn't entirely sure how to respond. 'Thank you' just seemed too hollow. "They're beautiful..." she managed to say instead as she accepted the bouquet and lifted the petals towards her face. Her eyes closed as she took a deep breath, a soft smile replacing the stunned expression at the sweet smell. Opening her eyes and looking up at him once more, she seemed to recover from the shock as she gestured towards the couch. "Go ahead and make yourself at home while I put these in some water. Can I get you anything?" Moving over to the replicator, she selected a vase that was tall enough to support the various lengths of the stems without changing the shape of the arrangement. The cryptic message from her mother certainly made a lot more sense now...

[Petty Officer Conor Lynch - Jovireh's Quarters]She looked surprised, and he steeled himself, but then she smiled. She closed her eyes and smelled the flowers and looked just... happy. He felt a pressure in his chest as he watched her face change and light up. He wasn't sure exactly what it was, he just knew he liked that look on her face, and that it should be there all the time. "They match the recipient, then," he said, pleased with himself, his grin reflecting that. When she told him to make himself at home he glanced about, searching for the best place to sit. He opted for the sofa and lowered to it, not hesitating in making himself comfortable. He pulled his leg up, rested his ankle on his knee and pushed backward into the cushion. "Ye could certainly spend hours on this watchin' a match," he observed, his words giving away where his mind had naturally went, "Far cry from a bar stool, in all an' anyways."He shook his head at her offer, impressed with her hosting skills already. "Nah, I'm alrigh', honestly. Can't stay long, haven't even seen me ma yet, jus' wanted ta drop in, y'know, say hello, see how ye were doin'?"
