Two weeks after the return of the C5[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Gym, Front Ear Station]With the Caldonia Five back, Judy's schedule was... much as it had been before. The nightmares were fewer and farther between, but little else had changed. Judy was back in the gym, trying to get Mabel fit enough for Starfleet. "I think you can do another one."Mabel, having already done eight push-ups in a row, wasn't so sure, but she needed ten for her fitness requirement, so she tried anyway. Down and up. Judy followed suit, out of solidarity. "There you go," Judy voiced her approval. "Now another one.""I can't," Mabel protested, and plopped down on the exercise mat. "You're getting better.""I feel worse."Judy handled Mabel a water bottle. The two women were a physical study in contrasts. Mabel was currently drowning in sweat, while Judy looked almost refreshed. Mabel's baggy grey sweatpants and hoodie seemed as though they were meant to camouflage against the deck plating, while Judy's turquoise leggings and sports bra set stood out. All in all, Judy was proudly in shape (certainly for a 64-year-old), Mabel was out of shape (though trying to change it), and it wasn't hard to tell which was which. With Mabel flopping on the mat, it was clear they were done for today, and far less intimidating than they would be, say, seated behind their respective desks.

[Matthew Harmon - Gym]One of the worst things about the grievous wounds he sustained on Caldonina was the tedium and annoyance of the recovery. Even after he was liberated from his stay in sickbay, he still had to spend a great deal of time sitting in Sickbay getting tests done fairly frequently. He also had to undergo some physical therapy.
He was just finishing up as he saw the Captain, and her non-blood daughter. "Almost got it," he said to Mabel in an attempt at being encoraging. "Ma'am," he said with a curt nod. They hadn't really spoken since his return and his defence of her in sickbay that led to his falling out with Charlie and the others. Some days he resented Judy for that, even though he knew it wasn't her fault. Today at least was not one of those days.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Gym]Mabel exhaled tiredly, trying to find the words to accept Harmon's encouragement, but finding her brain momentarily scrambled. Judy, on the other hand, did have words. "Physical therapy, huh?" she asked rhetorically, as she stood up. "It really is a torment, but... you pull through."With her known heart issues, it was hardly a shock that the Captain had had her share of PT.

[Matthew Harmon - Gym]"Yes, Doctors orders," he said unhappily. "You'd think with the marvels of modern medicine that they'd have figured out a way to patch me up without all this tedium and extra pain," he complained. "I suppose the Caldonians really did a number on me..."

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Gym]Matt's last comment really sent the pangs of guilt surging through Judy's mind, and making themselves apparent with a red flush in her cheeks, though that paled (literally and metaphorically) in comparison to the exhausted red hue of Mabel's face. "They did, and I just wish we could undo it all," the Captain said softly. "Admiral Ellis didn't let us rescue you," Mabel said, mentioning a woman who had not formally come up in the debriefings or anywhere else, in what could only be described as a tiredness-induced slip.

Matt sighed. He was tired. Torture did that to you, as did your best friend, your only friend abandoning you. "I know," he said to the Captain. "I wish I could too," or at least undo his sticking up for the Captain in front of Charlie. "Ellis?" he asked, surprised. That was new information. He knew the order to abandon them came from high, but he didn't know it was from her. She always had an angle. If it suited her purposes he was sure she would have looked the other way.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Gym -> Passageway]Well, this cat, one of many involved in this affair, was out of the bag. However, that didn't mean it had to be discussed in public. "Walk with us."Judy slung her gym bag over one shoulder, and Mabel's over the other, and began to walk out of the gym, with Mabel following along tiredly. "Admiral Ellis gave the order. Didn't give us a chance to discuss anything, to convince her of anything, to present the facts, or, for that matter, to stall. The trillium must flow, even if that means five Federation citizens get thrown in a concentration camp and the Kurjarians live as slaves forever."Judy began to feel unsteady on her feet, but forced herself to keep standing. The passageway she'd led them to was empty, with no benches or chairs.

He wasn't certain that the Captain would be willing to speak much about Ellis, but was glad when she asked him to walk with her, implying she was ready to have this discussion. Good, she owed that at least. Soon they were in a secluded passageway away from prying eyes.
As the Captain spoke, Matt stroked his chin in contemplation. He knew that many within the Federation and Starfleet leadership would want the problem to quietly go away in order to preserve the supply of trillium, but he was still interested in Ellis' personal role. "And do you think Admiral Ellis was merely relaying orders from higher?" he asked. He was confident that wasn't true, but wanted to see what the Captain said.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Passageway]Judy sighed. "Given the timetables, I tend to think it was her acting on her own authority. There wasn't enough time for the bureaucracy in San Francisco to do its thing."Command's slowness was, perhaps, the main reason Judy relished her active, spaceborne command despite the events on Caldonia. She loved process, but she didn't love meetings that could be subspace messages, or long deliberations that served no goal at all. "Don't get me wrong, a lot of people back that call, but it was her call.""I agree with Judy on this one," Mabel puffed. "The 4-star ranks don't move this fast."

That tracks," he nodded, well aware of the lethargy of Command and the executive decisions that sometimes had to be made in the field by senior officers, like Ellis. "What exactly, word for word, was her order? How much contact did you have with her, or her direct representatives?" he asked.

[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD & Lt. j.g. Mabel Henriksen - Passageway]Matt's tone began to remind Judy of how one might talk to a criminal suspect, which stung, although she could certainly understand how he might see her as the perpetrator of the horrible act that was abandoning the C5 - she saw herself in that light as well, sometimes. "We were ordered to leave Caldonia immediately, and not do anything, even diplomatic, to rescue the five of you. There was no room for us to argue," Mabel answered, stepping in to protect her boss. "Judy was on the planet, so I was the one that was there. The Admiral's people wouldn't listen to me."Judy sighed deeply. "Let's take this to my office, shall we?"

The order not to try anything diplomatic was was very intriguing. And possibly a misstep for Antionette if that ever became public knowledge. She wouldn't care about popular opinion or fleet morale, but most of the rest of the Admiralty would be very unhappy about how bad that looks. "I'm sure you did your best," he said to Mabel. When Judy suggested retreating to her office, he shook his head. "No, no, I have to meet Chloe. She's insistent on keeping me apprised of what's going on every week or so and gets off her shift shortly." He then looked to Mabel. "Thank you Mabel, this is...all very interesting," he then looked at the captain and gave a curt nod. "Ma'am," he said before turning on his heels and leaving.

"Alright," Judy accepted, not wanting to impose her presence on Matthew. "Give Chloe our regards."
"And remind her that she owes me a milkshake," Mabel added, referring to a wager the two young women had made.
Chloe's insistence on staying in touch with Matt was something both Judy and Mabel thought was a good idea. Without a bit of work, without a sense of purpose, he'd be adrift on the proverbial sea, and surely get in all sorts of trouble.
