[Ens. Eshryv Th'oshaaran - Front Ear - Personal Quarters]Eshryv's expression lifted slightly upon hearing that the station was usually quite busy. That was definitely more than he had been expecting when he read his orders. "You're not wrong. We essentially manage all the technology on a ship or station." There was a lot that went into it, but Starfleet generally made it easier by having everything working in the same type of way. "Don't have a specialty yet. Maybe some day." He was fresh out of the Academy, after all.

[Left Ear - Personal Quarters]
Left Ear finally realized that the Andorian must be a very new officer. Actually, she didn't know if he was an officer or enlisted. That distinction had taken awhile for her to fully understand, and she didn't know whether it was impolite to ask someone who wasn't in uniform which they were.
She left that thought for the moment, hoping she could find out organically by continuing the conversation. All the different technology has been one of the biggest challenges for me coming here,' she commented. 'Do you get to work in all the different areas until you decide what you want to specialize in?'

[Ens. Eshryv Th'oshaaran - Front Ear - Personal Quarters]And she just... Kept on talking. This was far more small talk than her not utilizing the standard furniture was worth, but Eshryv was too deep in it now to back out gracefully. So with a noncommittal shrug, he contemplated how best to reply. "We work the entire department starting out. If we naturally take to a specialty, or want to learn more about a specific area... There's an option of further study down the road." At least, that was how it seemed to work based on his sophomore year field study. Ops officers did everything, unless they specifically chose to limit themselves to one area. The Andorian had no such intentions of being a 'specialist'.

[ Left Ear - Personal Quarters] ' That sounds interesting,' Left Ear said, her tail corkscrewing loosely. ' The variety must keep you from getting bored.' The last word was garbled as the young Sivaoan was overtaken by a jaw-cracking yawn. Her eyes squeezed shut, nose wrinkled, long tongue stuck out and did its own stretch, and her mouthful of razor-sharp teeth were on perfect display. She tried to belatedly throw a hand in front of her face, knowing that humans, at least, considered it more polite, but her mouth was so wide when it was fully open that the hand didn't really block anything. ' Sorry,' she said when she was done. ' I worked a late shift and then moved in here. It's been a busy few days.' Tag Syl O'Connell

[Ens. Eshryv Th'oshaaran - Front Ear - Personal Quarters]When the cat's mouth opened impossibly wide in a yawn, Eshryv just stared, slightly unsettled by the amount and sharpness of teeth that were revealed. Why did any sentient species need teeth like that? He was pulled from his wondering when she apologized and mentioned how busy she'd been. That was his out. "Well, I'll let you rest. I really should go check in anyway." And with that he returned to his room to finish changing into his new uniform. [Few weeks later] When Lt. Henrickson had told him that the station wasn't yet running up to Federation standards, followed by a lengthy explanation of the previous staff he had stopped listening to, the Andorian did not realize that meant consoles would randomly explode when he ran a simple diagnostic. The longer he was there, the more convinced he was that someone was trying to make him miserable, and spent the walk to Sickbay planning his revenge for when he found out who it was. The doors slid open, and without looking around he made his way to the closest empty biobed and took a seat. His face was burned and bleeding, but not as bad as his hands. Perhaps if he had been a weaker species he would be crying or making some other pitiful sound of pain, but he was proud to be Andorian, and the only sign of the pain he was in was his clenched jaw and tightly curled antennae.

[ Left Ear - Sickbay] Left Ear spent quiet times in Sickbay doing her Academy readings whenever she could. When someone entered, one ear flicked in that direction, but the cadet didn't move right away. If things weren't busy, one of the other doctors would usually see walk-ins so she could keep studying. After a couple of moments, when she didn't hear anyone addressing the patient, Left Ear stood. She knew before she came around the corner that it was her roommate sitting on the biobed. The Sivaoan had become accustomed to the Andorian's unique scent, but this time it was layered with an odor of burned flesh and pain. That made her hustle. Left Ear was pulling her tricorder free of her harness before she reached Eshryv's side. ' Ensign, that looks nasty,' she said, falling into formality since they were both in uniform. She avoided voicing a sympathetic hiss. She ran her scanner over Eshryv, quickly checking if there were more than the obvious injuries. ' You've got first- and second-degree burns. Give me one moment and I'll get you taken care of.' Left Ear hurried to a cabinet and grabbed a burn kit. It had sterile pads, ointment, dermal regenerator and a variety of antibiotics and pain meds already packaged for quick use. She set this on a rolling tray table and pulled it with her back to the biobed. Tag Syl O'Connell

[Ens. Eshryv Th'oshaaran - Front Ear - Sickbay] His antennae, which were thankfully not burned, picked up movement on the other side of the room, and Eshryv turned his head to see his roommate hustling towards him with a tricorder. "I'm fine," he replied. Before he could say anything else, however, she was moving away from him... This time to gather supplies. She was going to treat his burns? But the cat was just a Cadet! Hadn't even finished the Academy, let alone medical school! His jaw worked in irritation, and he turned his head to look around the room. Where was everyone else? Anyone else? "Where are the doctors?" he asked curtly.

[ Left Ear - Sickbay] Left Ear paused in her preparations to blink rapidly at Eshryv for a moment. Then her tail sprang into a corkscrew. ' I'm sorry. I guess I didn't really explain to you before. I am a doctor already. That's why I've been able to do my Academy studies like this.'
I promise I know what I'm doing.' But she waited, despite her strong urge to help with the painful burns. If the Andorian really wanted someone else to treat him, that was his right. Left Ear wouldn't force her ministrations on anyone. Tag Syl O'Connell

[Ens. Eshryv Th'oshaaran - Front Ear - Personal Quarters]His antennae uncurled slightly and tilted towards her as he regarded her explanation. Already a doctor... How old was she? Unlike some species, it was almost impossible to guess a cat's age, regardless of their size apparently. After a moment of weighing his options, and hoping the other doctors wouldn't be so careless as to leave her unattended if she didn't really know what she was doing... Eshryv nodded in consent to let her begin treating his injuries. "Why join Starfleet, then?" Most of the medical cadets he knew had joined Starfleet for the Medical Academy training. It didn't make sense why someone who already had their medical license would choose to start over at the beginning.

[ Left Ear - Sickbay] The Sivaoan's ears had unconsciously pricked forward as she waited for her roommate's reply and relaxed once he nodded his assent. Left Ear opened his file on her PADD and perused it quickly, then opened the sterile burn packet and removed the included hypo. There were several vials with different common combinations of antibiotics and pain relief. Left Ear picked the one that was best suited for Andorian physiology and tapped in the dosage. ' This is an antibiotic to prevent any infection while I get you treated and a mild analgesic. I don't want to give you too much to start with, so let me know if you want more.' She applied the hypospray to Eshryv's arm, then turned to sterilize her hands before picking up a sterile pad and some burn spray that would also help with pain while she cleaned them. It also gave her time to consider her reply before turning back to the Andorian. ' I came here out of curiosity when my people were invited to be part of developing the colony on Kerelia. Since the Federation wanted to keep the impact on the planet's ecosystems minimal, our way of life was a good starting point. They didn't need a doctor, but I've always wanted to learn about more species, so I took advantage of the opportunity. There were no restrictions on how many of us could come.' Left Ear dabbed carefully at Eshryv's burns as she went on. ' I've been in several situations since coming here that made me feel powerless to take care of myself. I have natural defenses, of course, but I'm not used to using those, and sometimes being able to protect yourself and others from a distance is better. So I started with asking a friend in security to teach me how to use a phaser, just so I would be able to pick one up if I ever had to. As I practiced, and talked with Jov, I started to realize there were benefits to all of the training Starfleet offers as far as protecting myself and taking care of others, but I think it will also give me more opportunities to expand my knowledge of other species.' [Ens. Eshryv Th'oshaaran - Front Ear - Personal Quarters]While Eshryv would never admit it to her, he was slightly impressed he didn't need to tell her not to inject the medication into his vein. Even doctors experienced with Andorian patients tended to forget that minor detail about their physiology. It was certainly a credit to her attention to detail, and he let himself relax a little as she began the treatment. Her explanation was not a simple one, but it made sense. Starfleet did offer a lot of opportunities one wouldn't normally have staying on their homeworld, and he couldn't fault her for wanting to learn more. It was commendable, in a way. "Which would you say is more important to you? Expanding your knowledge of other species, or expanding your ability for protection?" It was the sort of question that had no right or wrong answer, but would give him a greater insight into the personality of the person he was forced to live with.

[ Left Ear - Sickbay] Left Ear continued her ministrations, carefully dabbing each burned area of blue skin. There were quicker ways to do this part, but unless it was an emergency situation or it would cause undue extra pain, the Sivaoan doctor preferred her hands-on methods. She gave Eshryv's question a lot of thought before replying as she switched to the dermal regenerator and beginning to move it slowly back and forth above her patient's skin. ' I think knowledge has become more important,' she said finally. ' It definitely started with wanting to have tools to protect myself and others. Even though, I guess the instincts are still there. I had to fight someone once when I was down on Kerelia, and I didn't even think about jumping in.
'But when there was a bomber on the station, I felt useless. There were so many people around, and I didn't know what to do to help.' The fur over her shoulders rippled in a shrug. ' Now I can do both.' Tag Syl O'Connell

[Ens. Eshryv Th'oshaaran - Front Ear - Sickbay]The Andorian watched closely as his roommate treated the burns on his skin, his face devoid of any signs of the pain the pressure caused. If one knew him well enough though, they'd recognize the stiffness in his posture and occasional twitches of his antennae. As she spoke, he tried to imagine the situations she had described, nodding slowly in understanding. "Both are worthy causes," Eshryv stated simply in response. "Societies would not exist long enough to evolve if people did not desire to protect each other, or learn about each other." Though there would always be plenty who disagreed about the latter.

[ Left Ear - Sickbay] Left Ear's whiskers arched forward, a Sivaoan indication of assent, and she said, ' I especially like that second part. I'd never conceived of so many different kinds of people with so many different ways of being arranged inside. Outside, too. All the physical and cultural differences.
'There we go,' she added, stepping back from the biobed. Left Ear set the dermal regenerator back on the tray. ' Good as new. Are you experiencing any more pain or discomfort?' He shouldn't be, but there was always the possibility of something not being quite right. Tag Syl O'Connell

[Ens. Eshryv Th'oshaaran - Front Ear - Sickbay]As she stepped away from him, he looked down at his hands for the first time since arriving in Sickbay. His flesh was back to its normal cerulean hue, and as he flexed his fingers and ran his palms over the previously injured places he couldn't see, he shook his head. "No." Eshryv answered the question simply, before pausing and turning to look at her. "You... did well." Compliments weren't something he was used to giving, but as they had just been talking about - he'd learned it was important for other species. "Thank you."
