Personal History
Early Life/Pre-Starfleet Career:
Myk came into this world much like any other Betazoid, he had a happy family unit he shared with two older brothers and sister. His Dad was an engineer on Betazed and his Mum a linguist at the University. She had a flare for languages and cultures. Often used for translation or diplomatic relations with other species Myk's Mum spent a lot of time off world, when she did return she was wholly devoted to family.
Myk took a keen interest in his Mum's work and was soon learning languages with her. Things seemed pretty normal for their little family unit, the siblings fought occasionally but nothing that couldn't be solved with blunt honesty. Nobody expected Myker to develop his Betazoid skills as early as he did. He was six and it happened suddenly, most of his family and extended family were in attendance for some gathering. Myk to this day can’t remember why. All he remembers was the sudden onslaught of minds, all hitting him at once, thoughts, emotions, motives all bombarded his young mind. The next thing he remembered waking up in his room, the minds gone, only his siblings and his parents 'noise’ was in his mind.
His mother had her concerns, but his father merely thought Myk was exhausted. They would later learn of his telepathy coming into play early. It was his favorite Grandfather that ended up discovering it, given he was still young at the time. The man helped Myk find his feet in navigating the complex art of telepathy and other peoples minds. With his Grandfather’s intervention Myk has managed to negate a fair amount of the troubles that comes from early development, they also worked with another highly esteemed Betazoid to help. This training not only helped negate some of the negative effects of his psionic abilities but it meant he had stronger, more developed telepathic skills than his peers. Something that got him into trouble way too often because he accidentally invaded the minds of people that didn’t appreciate it, whether he unintentionally read their thoughts or shared his thoughts and feelings with them. These were usually the diplomats his mother worked with, they often didn’t hold the same values Betazoids did about candor.
The constant onslaught of others emotions, feelings and intrusive thoughts started to become a problem when he hit his later teen years. The older her grew the stronger his telepathy grew and peoples minds filtered into his constantly. Unable to block them out he felt every emotion deeply, he sensed every thought of those around him even the intrusive ones. These caused debilitating anxiety attacks, these attacks were intense and often resulted in Myk losing all control of his mind, allowing his very soul to drift and carry to those around him. His feelings, thoughts, emotions transferred to anyone close enough. Myk became more and more reclusive, finding every opportunity to hide away from others outside his family circle. His family were more aware of his trouble so exerted extra effort to keep their minds calm, tranquil and happy. Myk found his sister's presence in particular to be calming and oftentimes when he was just dealing with far too many thoughts he’d hear her mind in his. Mari on many occasions talked him down from anxiety attacks.
Myk worked with specialists to assist in aiding his mind to function as normal as possible, it proved to be a lot more complex than anticipated and it took far more work than initially assessed. Despite the concerns of his Grandfather and his parents, Myk decided to forgo further therapy and training in favor of continuing his education alongside his peers. He chose to study Linguistics and Anthropology. Myk spent very little time socializing with his fellow students, he spent most of his time with his nose buried in a book or simply resting. He was finding life with so many minds in close proximity hard to deal with, despite having learned many techniques to help they seemed to work less effectively in the real world. It was a constant battle to stop the minds of others invading his, the stronger the emotion or darker the thoughts the more invasive they were. He consistently dismissed it, treating it like it was a minor inconvenience and for a long while. Nobody saw that it was a problem, unless they could read his thoughts. His parents urged him to continue some form of training and he continued to resist. It all came to a head when contact with one particular individuals mind created such intense emotions, strong enough to send Myk catatonic.
Myk stayed that way for three days. When he did finally recover somewhat his parents had insisted he get more training and therapy. He reluctantly agreed, if he could continue his studies. The therapy Myk received helped to some degree and he could start filtering out a lot of the noise of others minds. The more he worked on filtering out others noise, the more it seemed his own thoughts leaked into the minds of others. Taking steps to improve one aspect of his telepathy seemed to have a detrimental affect on the other and so the next few years was spent finding a balance, honing his skills and working hard to control his mind, and by extension others. Ten years of work and a lot of pain later Myk had learnt to really harness and rein in his Telepathy, under perfect conditions he can completely filter out others and prevent his own mind leaking. He created strong mental blocks that seemed to work effectively in keeping everything nicely under control. Unfortunately this method isolated him from the world, without some noise Myk felt disconnected, like he didn't really exist...or the people didn't really exist.
Myk joined Starfleet when he was 32, he was assigned to a research vessel, in charge of communication he handled a lot of the language related things as well as making sure they didn't offend another species. Myk soon grew comfortable in this environment and settled into the rhythm finding life in space more comfortable than being on Betazed. This gave him more opportunity to withdraw even more, becoming more and more of a recluse the longer he was stationed on the ship. He disconnected more and more, it simply got to the point where he was simply existing in this universe. His mind unconnected, his soul empty. He never formed any real connections with anyone and eventually stopped communicating all together. He did his job, answered questions, responded when spoken to and then simply returned to his quarters. It was a lonely life for the Betazoid, for a being who's life was built on connecting with others emotionally and mentally it was hard. He fell into a depression and was eventually relived of duty on the research vessel. He didn't return to Betazed though, he rather went to Earth. His sister was in the Starfleet ranks and figured the change of pace would do her brother the world of good.
It didn't take his sister long to work out why his brother was in such low spirits, she could sense the walls he'd put around his mind. It wasn't healthy for a Betazoid to be disconnected from those around them. They once again revisited therapy, this time it was with someone at the Academy that his sister knew. It took a lot of work to slowly start allowing the walls in Myk's mind to lower, bit by bit. When he was reassigned to another vessel, one built for longer journeys, he was more himself and allthough still quiet shy he was starting to connect with the world again.
Then came the battle of Betazed, a battle that would every Betazoid to the core. As soon as Myker was alerted of the situation he got over to Betazed as quickly as possible. Myker knew they needed strong minds and while he struggled to control his telepathy it was always invasie and so he chose to help his homeworld and fellow Betazoids. The battle was long and would claim many lives, even some of the strongest of Telepaths succumed in the end. Myk wasn't about to give up, for every soul they lost Myk fought harder. Harder for the liberation of his home, his family. It was a battle that would leave scars on everyone involved. The loss of his brother and sister had Myk showcasing the strength of his telepathy like nobody had seen it before. Driven by hate, anger and grief Myker Vulbrix became a force to be reckoned with. His mind and others eventually ended the Dominion occupation but it wasn't without casualties. Myk for one once again ended up cationic, this time for three months as his mind healed from the strain and emotionally stress it carried.
Waking up was only the start of his recovery, feeling the loss of so many lives, fighting for those still living and losing his closest friend all but destroyed Myk. What many of their human counterparts didn't realize was that for many of them the war wasn't over. Recovering from mental war took as much strength, if not more, than the war people were accustomed too. Myk had lost two siblings, his family was shattered and the rebuild would be slow. It would take a year before he felt ready to leave Betazed again and return to active duty. He was assigned to the USS Mac and has been there ever since. He very much has retreated into himself, not trying very hard to form connections on the ship and spending a lot of time alone. Although becoming more open he is still very cautious for fear of hurting others.

Please write a brief answer to 3 of the following (a sentence or two for each is fine):
Your character's most painful experience
Myk's most painful experience was losing his brother and sister. His sister was his closest friend and the only person he could really be free with. She could read his mind and he read hers. Losing that connection was like losing a limb.
Your character's best or favorite experience
Myk's favorite thing was whenever he'd watch the sunset over Betazed, it was almost spiritual for the man and sort of signified the end of something while teasing of something new and great. He found it deeply comforting but hasn't done this since losing his sister.
Your character's most crucial experience:
The most crucial experience for Myk was the battle of Betazed, he realized then the power of the minds of his people. Sure they'd been told enough times but collectively they created an incredible force and Myk saw in reality the power of the mind over warfare and of course the pain it can cause. He realized then that their is a fine line to tread when it comes to telepathy.
Who is your character's role model and why?
Myk has many role models, he tries to learn from everyone he meets. He firmly believes that everyone has something to teach him and he will look for that lesson. He has a lot of respect for those around him.
Please write a brief sample post from your character’s perspective:
No one felt silence quiet like a he was in that moment. It wasn't the kind of silence that settled between friends after some friendly laughter, it wasn't the type of silence between lovers that hung thick in the air. No this silence was exactly that silence, it was a void, a space empty that was once occupied. Myk turned over again, restless despite having no thoughts, unable to sleep despite the exhaustion he felt tugging at his mind. He hated this feeling, the blackness, emptiness that came with blocking out all others, but he couldn't let them in. If he let them in he wouldn't stop, the thoughts were addictive and agonizing at the same time. The more he let in the more he'd want, eventually drowning in the thoughts of others he'd lose himself. Giving up on rest the Betazoid stood up of his bed and stretching out his limbs to ease the pins and needles that suddenly had a say. Dropping his arms heavily Myk located his usual casual gear, it was more Earth like, a simple t-shirts and sweats. He found the soft material was comforting in some strange way. Once he'd pulled on some suitable shoes Myker headed out of his quarters, he didn't know where he was going but the decks of the ship had more than enough places to go.
Myk ended up in the observation lounge, staring out at the void that was space. Although not so much a void, the stars zipping past them was testimony to that. The telepath hadn't been concerned about the time that was passing as he watched stars, comets and whatever else pass them. He only became more aware when he sensed someone right behind him, he didn't need telepathy for that.
Terrifying isn't it? Glancing over his shoulder towards the source of the voice he saw a young Ensign from Engineering. He didn't know the kids name but he was young.
He shrugged, realizing a few moments later he hadn't given the kid a verbal response, which was unnecessary at best, if he were back home his mother would call him out for being down right rude.
Not really, there's still stars which means there is energy, there is life. Myk responded his gaze returning back to the view he'd been looking at moments before. He noted the Ensign now move to stand next to him.
So what you're saying is when there's energy, there is life. was the young mans response and although the mans statement didn't need a response Myk offered one.
Energy is the engine of life, the fuel of everything in existence and the light we see is just to remind us off that. Myker noted his gaze not moving, his sisters words echoed in his mind now, When there's light, there is hope, hope for better. The silence that settled between the men was comfortable and Myk's world felt a little less empty.
Do you have previous experience with a role-play forum?
Yes. I've been RPing for about 12 years. I haven't been on a StarTrek site for a while though
What brought you to the Frontier? - I googled
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
No I think that's all.

He doesn't have all that many prejudices, aside from those typical to a Betazoid. He does have issues with others being manipulative though and it's one sure fire way to find yourself on Myk's bad side.
