Xoteak, the Caldonian chicken merchant and probable dissident, stood inside the pit that had been found at LZ-1, or at least a pit, clutching one handle of an antique vase.
"No, let it go! You'll break it!" he shouted at the man holding the other end.
"Let it go, Matthew!"
[Matthew Harmon - A Pit (but not The Pit)]"It belongs in a museum!" Matt yelled at the traitorous Caldonian as he gave the vase a hard tug trying to get it out of his oponents hands. "You're making it even more tempting to shoot you!" he threatened staring deep into his eyes. After quite a few weeks of wallowing in his self pity, when Matthew had heard about the Kurjarian treasure on Kerellia he saw a chance to redeem himself, at least a little, and reclaim the lost items for the Kurjarians himself if he could. They didn't belong in the hands of collectors, criminals, or thrill seekers. It belonged in a museum.
Tag: Judith Eastman [NPC - Xoteak - LZ-1]"It must be sold! To finance the..." Xoteak snapped back, before the vase snapped while he was mid-sentence. The Caldonian was knocked flat on his back, which put him on top of a collection of paintings. As it happened, he didn't cause any visible damage. "This is all your fault, Mr. Harmon!"

[ Ilario Matteus Alfonse Vierdeau - Jungle, Kerelia ]{Quoted Posts} [Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - Kerelia - Shuttle]The scientist had managed to keep the hunters' shuttle on their sensors. They weren't exactly trying to be evasive. When they stopped, he watched them for a moment before answering Chloe. "Probably looking for a safe landing zone..." Cerjess cursed loudly when the shuttle engaged its thrusters and began to spin, burning the trees to ash in their decent. "More like making a landing zone!" He slammed his fist against the console, anger burning within him as hot as the destructive thrusters. This was exactly the sort of thing he'd been worried about.
Tag Matthew Harmon [Staz Volkova - Kerelia - Shuttle]Once more, the Ochiran rolled her eyes as she felt the shuttle start to circle. Staz was starting to believe she would have been better off with that other woman. While this man had the resources, he didn't have the slightest bit of subtlety. "Oh, sure. Ruin the Federation's precious planet. That won't bring the Fleet down on our heads at all." She commented dryly, her grip tightening on her blade reflexively. She may have to kill them a lot sooner than she was planning in order to keep the Fleet off her back. But she'd bide her time, of course. Get on the ground first, see how they decided to proceed from there.
Tag Eliska Bremmer Both shuttles executed their maneuvers with precision and effectiveness, clearly having done so before and both pilots working in concert to both burn down unwanted trees and blow out any fires before they would become a real problem. It was one thing to leave an area scorched to bedrock, it was another to actually set the whole damn jungle on fire. Sure, there might be some noise made by the jackboots, but really what was it really in the end? Just some legalized thugs trying to flex their muscle. "My dear, one thing the Federation loves to make noise about is about all those rules they have and how breaking any of them is the end of the world. It never really is."When both shuttles touched down, both disgorged their payload. In this case, a grand total of a dozen rough-looking fellows carrying assorted gear to their personal preferences, and all looking as though the had some experience in doing such things. But then again, one did not need to be an expert, if one had the right people working for them. "Bosun, lead the way," Vierdeau called out, and the man he addressed sighed before looking at his tricorder, and setting off into the bush towards that treasure.
tag Anastazia Volkova Soft Matthew Harmon and Syl O'Connell [Staz Volkova - Kerelia - Shuttle]Staz clearly did not share the man's frivolous attitude towards Starfleet, but she followed the others off the shuttle anyway. "You clearly didn't grow up on one of their colonies," she replied dryly. Granted, Ochira hadn't been a Federation colony for very long, and the revolution happened before her time. But they were all told about Starfleet's attempts at keeping order, and how desperately they fought to maintain control of the planet. She didn't doubt they would take similar measures to ensure the safety of this colonized planet. As they left the burned down clearing, she adjusted her bag over her shoulder and pulled her knife from her belt. Jungles were a dangerous place, and she didn't dare be caught by a predator unarmed. Her gaze swept around the trees, searching the branches and the brush as she followed the others.

Tag Eliska Bremmer "Oh heavens no!" Ilario exclaimed at the notion of having been raised on a colony. He was born and raised on Earth, the crown jewel of the Federation, the center of its governance and the capital world of all of humanity no matter where the accident of their birth happened to have taken place. "One must simply know how to handle those jackboots, of course." Of course, that was true of anything, and he'd never been caught, or at least been convicted of any wrongdoing. Though, largely because his crew knew how to avoid the patrols and security perimeters more often than not... As they walked into the dense jungle, the crew of the Calypso had fallen into a single file, with the fellow walking point a little ahead of the main body and consulting his tricorder. And before long, they were nearing their objective and a halt was called. As the group gathered, once more the tricorder came out and an active scan was performed, a multi-band subspace active scan to seek out any other groups of treasure hunters by the technology they carried. And, as it would occur, one of those bands was in the 30 megahertz range... Which, unbeknownst to Master Vierdeau and his party, tended to irk some of the local wildlife. And it was not until one of his men, a fellow named Rogers who was happy that he could actually wear his favoured scarlet shirts given that the ship's crew operated in civilian attire, went to relieve himself in the bushes that they learned of the existence of tritters. And while only poor Rogers saw the tide of those hairless, disgusting creatures boiling out of the ground, it was his excruciatingly long blood-curdling shrieks that alerted the rest of Calypso's party to the threat as he was being ripped apart into very small pieces.

[ PO3 Eliska Bremmer - Square, LZ-2 Colony -> LZ-1, Kerelia ]{Quoted Posts} [Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Science Tent]"Yes, I have #3 right here, if you'll forgive the ghastly chicken-scratch handwriting," Judy answered Jurgha, setting her PADD down on the table. Leaving her own work for a bit, she looked at the five lakes. "Let's see which of these lakes is most unlike the others, that'd be the son. Kurjarian society has a patriarchal bent, so I'll bet that one points us in the direction we need to go."One lake happened to be more elongated than the others. "As for #7, it's definitely something to do with circles. 2 Pi - that's not a coincidence."
Tag Shavan Th'zhaar , Eliska Bremmer , Ic Arbrell , soft Enola , Evorís [ Jurgha, daughter of Khar - Science Tent] As more connections were made between the riddles, and everyone examined the map, the hints seemed to match up. But which one actually pointed to the coordinates of the treasure? Others were already looking for it; they needed to get out there. Jurgha thought back to riddle 2, the only one that spoke of actual distance. There was also the mysterious message from earlier, that said the treasure was 129,600 paces away from the river. Maybe she didn’t know much about mapmaking, or Caldonians, or whatever else, but surely there was something that could make this worth their time and lead them to calculate the location more precisely. “That message. Was it just meant to send everyone running in the wrong direction, or is there a point along that lake that is also 220 kilometers away from the river?” Judith Eastman Eliska Bremmer Enola Ic Arbrell [ Ensign Ic Arbrell — Science Tent, LZ-2, Kerelia] “Maybe not along the lake,” said Ic quietly, pointing out the lake that appeared most different to the others (with a tilt of the head and just a little imagination, it was clear now why this one should be considered the “son”) and drew with his fingertip a little line away from the zenith of the shore’s arch. “Triangulate that from an equidistant point along the river? Two pi radians, in which the treasure is the center.”He tried to stretch his pinky finger to create an awkward manual compass, demonstrating the thought, if rather clumsily. With his index finger on a supposed midpoint and the pinky moving between lake and river, it appeared to be about a 45 degree angle. The appearance of the landscape at that point on the map made him narrow his eyes. The longer he looked at it, the more it seemed likely. “That... wouldn’t happen to be Landing Zone One, by any chance, would it?”
tags science tent [Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Science Tent]Judy looked at the map, and the more she looked, the more readily apparent it seemed. "Oy vey iz mir." The last thing they needed now was a group of trigger-happy treasure hunters bringing their high-tech equipment to awaken the Tritters.
"Well, we'd best go secure the site before anyone gets killed. Don't bring more technology than you need. We'll beam over in 5 minutes."Then, she got a message from Chloe. =A= "Stay the course for now, Lieutenant. If you need reinforcements, send word to Mabel and she'll dispatch them, but for now, since there are strong hints pointing to LZ-1, we're holding our reserves... well, in reserve. Also, be sure to chronicle every crime they commit, including torching a forest with their shuttles, because that's the kind of thing I'd like to see prosecuted." =A=
The awkward use of military terminology ("holding one's reserves in reserve") was very much reflective of the fact that Judy had joined Starfleet late in life, and still had not fully embraced its mannerisms.
6 minutes later
[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - LZ-1]The group - with plenty of analogue equipment like ladders and shovels - materialized in LZ-1, which was presently Tritter-free, and with a line of sight to a shaft about two meters deep. "Well, looks like someone was already here," Judy said to her subordinates, motioning for them to approach it.

Truth be told, much of what was being discussed was not beyond Eliska, but as more information became available, the target area was starting to get smaller and smaller and its location more and more precise. And, it was starting to look really familiar, for some reason, so she brought up map labels just in time to hear the Captain let out a less-than-pleased expression. One that was quickly followed by one of her own, though likely far fouler than the bespectacled Captain's. "Do prdele."For she knew where they were headed, and there was a reason it had been abandoned, and one screw-up would spell disaster... However, at the call to gear up, Petty Officer Bremmer not only grabbed her own pack, but added some additional, communal gear to it before easily shouldering it; her high-gravity adapted physiology, combined with the slightly lighter than standard gravity of Kerelia were an ideal combination to make her a most effective beast of burden all right, and then she grabbed her rifle before performing yet again a set of readiness checks on the weapon, something she did with quick competence and without much of a conscious thought. And before long, they were away from the settlement, and found themselves where the initial colonization attempt had been considered and promptly rejected, and looking at the entrance of a shaft. Automatically, the Petty Officer turned on her rifle's light and peered into the darkness, and then her ears perked up; did she hear something? She couldn't be sure. However, she damn well knew what lurked underground in this area. "Captain, shall I take point?"

[Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - Kerelia - Shuttle]Miren stayed quiet as Hudson communicated with the Captain, but it was clear from his expression he wished it was the hunters about to be cat food, instead of Rin. The Bajoran was at least armed, and hadn't sounded scared for his life, so the scientist kept his attention focused on his own task. It was reassuring to hear that the people they were following were going to be prosecuted for the destruction, but he wished they could take them into custody immediately, before they caused any more damage. Although, judging by the amount of people that left the two shuttles... They were definitely going to need help to do that. "There's enough space for us to set down in the clearing they made, might want to wait a couple minutes if we don't want to be seen, though." He informed Chloe after the Captain had finished speaking, his voice tense from the anger he was trying to reel in.

When Miren suggested landing nearby, Chloe nodded. "Good idea." She noticed in his voice that he was still angry. With that said, she piloted their small shuttle into the clearing their targets had so destructively created. "We should be careful of tritters, can you do a scan before we leave?" she asked cautiously.

[Staz Volkova - Kerelia - LZ-1]And there it was. The complete lack of knowledge of the darker side of the Federation that would be their downfall. There was no "handling" Starfleet when you stood between them and their reign. There was nothing they wouldn't do to take back control. Before she had a chance to argue further, however, a blood-curdling scream tore through the trees. Adrenaline flooded her system, and Staz quickly sheathed her dagger and leapt up, hands grasping the nearest low-hanging branch. Swinging her body forward, she braced her feet against the trunk, using it to climb the rest of the way onto the branch. Then, she carefully moved to a sturdier branch, and drew her blade once more. She watched the bushes below, where the scream had come from, and waited apprehensively for the cause to make itself known.

[ Ensign Rin Zakir - the Jungle - Kerelia] It seemed that he had been quite correct in his assessment that the woman could take care of herself, that left only the catmon trailing him to worry about. That, and the stark warning that Hudson would kill him if he died here. Good luck, might need to call in a favour from the Prophets on that one, he mused. For now, he was unable to respond as he was concentrating on not dying any number of times today. Instead, he waited for the catmon to get closer, just beginning to pounce when he managed to hit the beast point blank with a shot from his phaser. The creature fell with a sound that was half growl and half mewling, another shot causing it to fall silent. The phaser had only been set to stun, but it had still take two shots to take it down. Or had it? Knowing that he had no doubt blown his cover, he moved to carefully examine the feline, making sure that it was indeed down. Sure enough, as he did so he heard a voice that was probably addressing him, but in a language he didn't understand. There was no use hiding now., though he would bide his time before letting the others know that he wasn't dead yet. Best not to implicate them just yet, although it didn't take a genius to figure out that they had all been wearing the same uniform. "Well, fancy seeing you out here", he spoke while knowing full well that he was busted. It was then the the roar of engines could be heard, and he looked up toward the source of the sound. Was that a shuttlecraft, he thought with disbelief as he removed his sunglasses. Oh Prophets, were they going to be in trouble. More so than he realised, a blood curdling scream then rang through the jungle, causing him to once again arm his phaser and move in the direction of the perceived threat. Though looking for trouble seemed like a bad idea, waiting for it to find him was a worse one. He then stopped himself as he remembered his assignment, and glanced back toward where Costa had stood. Had he lost her in all the 'excitement'? No doubt she would want to at least not stay put when something was clearly very wrong. In fact, most civilians tended to want to go in the opposite direction of any perceived threat.

Chloe's mention of triggers quickly pulled him out of his thoughts. While he'd never encountered the creatures on Kerelia, running for his life on the mystery planetoid was enough for him to not want to. He adjusted the parameters of the sensors, and cursed under his breath when he saw the mass of biosigns. But a devilish grin crossed his face when he saw where they were heading. With that in mind, she obeyed the captain's order to get ready. She grabbed her own backpack and considered for a moment whether she should add anything else, as Bremmer had, but decided against it. She trusted the transporter in principle, but still it was always a good idea to check if this machine had forgotten anything. But the part-vulcan had everything she needed. Next, she looked from the captain to the other members of the team. Then she looked around thoroughly and noticed something. She opened her mouth a little to say something, but before she could say anything, the security officer had already spoken, and Enola closed her mouth again. In fact, most civilians tended to want to go in the opposite direction of any perceived threat. [Costa - Jungle - Outskirts LZ-1, Kerelia]"Such a coincidence," Costa deadpanned drily in response, slipping into a recognisable language. Her eyes flickered from him, unusually clean, unusually cute, to the subdued catmon. They were both still alive, and a part of Costa felt a trickle of relief. Just a trickle, mind - she wasn't soft. To her knowledge, catmons very rarely hunted together. They were opportunistic, loner foragers, so the only viable explanation would be that there was a den nearby. She was about to warn her Starfleet tail, when the sky erupted above, the noise heralding a shuttle arrival, followed by an unholy scream. "Oh, pashang."[fn]A very bad word.[/fn] Before she could say anything else, the officer had taken off in the direction of the scream. Of course he had. Costa hesitated for a moment; the smart thing would be to get the hell away from these people, their tech and their damage, and continue alone. What should she care if they'd all been grossly unprepared for this jungle, and were about to die horrible, screaming deaths? She groaned very loudly, hefted her disrupter and took off after the Ensign. "Oye!"[fn]"Hey!"[/fn] He'd stopped and turned, thankfully, and Costa caught up with a couple of measured, sure steps. "If ya have any tech on ya, any of that fancy Fleet issue, kill it. If it transmits a frequency over 30MHz, it attracts the tritters. Once they've torn ya to shreds, they'll eat every inch of ya." They weren't wasteful creatures. Costa admired that. Taking her own advice, Costa consulted the infrared map on her handheld, trying to commit as much of the area to memory as she could, before powering down. She fought against her instinct to throw it as far away from her as possible and instead shoved it into her belt, thinking that it could come in useful as a distraction if they were indeed walking into a megatroop of tritters. Onward.

They had been awoken. Again, the horrible noise had disturbed the slumber of the Many, and they left their caves to track the noises. Swirling through the jungle, groups of Tritters approached various locations, screaming their horrifying screams and attacking any intruders they came upon. No one was safe. Neither the wealthy adventurer, nor his companions, nor the freighter captain, nor the wounded fleeter - the Many did not discriminate. However, the group with the ship, the ones that had caused fire, happened to pose a more irritating target.

Expectantly, she let her gaze wander again from Bremmer to the Captain and from the Captain to Bremmer, before she decided to keep an eye on the surrounding... [Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - LZ-1]"Yes, Petty Officer, go ahead. You, Ms. Jurgha, and Ensign Enola can go down first, if it's safe," Judy said to Bremmer. She generally liked to see more initiative, but given that these were challenging circumstances, she didn't hold it against the young woman. "I'll cover our rear."Judy was a decent shot with a phaser pistol, and at her age, going down a shaft came with a risk of fracturing a bone - not a good thing at this moment in time.

"Put your little rodent skills to better use sucking up to an oligarch if you want money!" he yelled back after the vase snapped. "MY FAULT?" he asked as the bastard had the gall to put the blame onto Matt. "You're the one who wouldn't let go, you spineless twat!" he said before shoving Xoteak with mild force. [NPC - Xoteak - LZ-1]Xoteak could only yelp in pain at Harmon's continual abuse. He just wanted to get more resources to the poor Kurjarian resistance, and even if he hadn't said so, couldn't the human give him the benefit of the doubt? In the distance, Xoteak heard a scream, but it didn't seem to be coming from above the surface. Rather, it seemed, this particular scream was coming from inside the tunnel system, where the treasure was - where he was.

[ Jurgha, daughter of Khar - LZ-1] Finally, they had their destination. Leaving the science tent and the riddles behind was a welcome prospect. Jurgha quickly recollected her own equipment, and stood with the rest of the group as they transported to LZ-1. As soon as they rematerialized, she stepped up beside Eliska and looked down into the shaft. When the human captain told them to go first, she had no argument. “Well, let’s move,” she replied with a grunt of agreement, and began climbing down when it was her turn. Any faint sounds that traveled this far, whether voices or something more animal, did nothing to deter her. Once at the bottom of the shaft, she turned on her own light, shining it into the tunnel, and held her phaser ready. It was time to get to the bottom of this. [ Ilario Matteus Alfonse Vierdeau - Jungle, vicinity of LZ-1, Kerelia ]{Quoted Posts} [Staz Volkova - Kerelia - LZ-1]And there it was.
Tag Eliska Bremmer They had been awoken. Where Master Vierdeau's group had halted, ears perked up as the late Rogers' screams reached them. And then, more screams sounded, but those were clearly not shaped by humanoid throats. And there were many of them. "Bosun, what's that?" he asked as he looked into the woods as they filled with those unholy shrieks. "Sir, I don't have a fu..."Then, he saw, through the foliage, the unholy creatures. "Just RUN!" he then screamed before shoving his boss towards the shuttles, and blindly firing his phaser behind as he chivvied the dandy forward. Maybe Master Vierdeau was an idiot, but he was an idiot who paid well and losing him, well, that might not bode well for future career prospects. And run Ilario did, crashing through the woods with his men following him and firing indiscriminately into the bush as they did so. If the woman who'd ridden with him wasn't there, well, he really couldn't care less at this point; the treasure was no longer a priority: not getting caught by those monstrosities was.
