[ Ilario Matteus Alfonse Vierdeau - Landing Pad, LZ-2 -> Jungle, Kerelia ]{Quoted Posts} [Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - Kerelia - Town Square]Cerjess returned the PADD to his belt, nodding in acknowledgement of the order. Then what she said actually sunk in, and he glanced up at the other Lieutenant nervously. "You do know I'm just a scientist, right? And a rather clumsy one at that..." He wasn't trying to argue, but stealth was most certainly not his strong suit. And if they got into any trouble out there, he probably wouldn't be much help. His attention shifted as the first of their 'marks' left the bar and started to walk off towards the jungle. The scrawny man followed shortly after, but called his new partner back towards the landing pads. That might cause some issues... "Have an idea how we'll follow the shuttles?" He asked Chloe, shifting the pack over his shoulder and checking to make sure his tricorder and phaser were still in place.
Tag Matthew Harmon [LTJG Chloe Hudson - Town Square]
Chloe outside with Miren quietly watched as the hunters headed towards the landing pads. She took out her tricorder and pressed a few buttons before responding to Miren. "I'm going to have their shuttle tracked. We'll follow from quite a distance in an unmarked shuttle, they'll probably pick us up on sensors but won't be certain who we are. And it's fine if they do find us, our main goal is monitoring them," she explained. "Lets go, dawdle," she said indicating for them to slowly and relatively inconspicuously head towards the shuttleport. They quickly made their way through security, Chloe signed out the local garrisons unmarked shuttle and boarded. "I'll fly, you try to keep a lock on their shuttle." After identifying the signal of the shuttle the hunters were using and with the help of the colony's scanners combined with their shuttles, they should be able to follow.
Tag: Syl O'Connell [Staz Volkova - Kerelia - Shuttle]Staz couldn't see how a shuttle would get them to their destination if it couldn't fit below the canopy of trees, but she wasn't going to argue about saving time on travel and bypassing most of the threats. Settling in a vacant seat, she kept her bag on her lap, concealing her hand resting over the hilt of her dagger. She wasn't dumb enough to blindly trust her new partner, nor anyone who worked for him. For all she knew this was just his attempt to get rid of one of the competition. But she also wasn't dumb enough to make her distrust obvious. She remained silent for now, her dark gaze ever watchful of everyone around her.
Tag Eliska Bremmer [Lt. JG Cerjess Miren - Kerelia - Town Square]Cerjess nodded at the new set of orders, rather relieved that they wouldn't be heading into the jungle on foot. Monitoring sensors in the safety of a shuttle was far more his alley. He followed the other Lieutenant towards the landing pad, taking his tricorder off his belt to make it look like he was doing something other than following the two hunters. When they reached the shuttle Hudson had procured for them, he took a seat at the tactical controls, putting in the information they'd received about the hunters' transport. "Target locked," he reported simply.
Tag Matthew Harmon Ah, finally, they made it to the landing pad and boarded the shuttle. And a small one it was not! It was a knock-off of one of Starfleet's newer aerowing designs, and it was very well-appointed, clearly Ilario's own private transport whenever he had the choice. And aside from the pilot and copilot in the cockpit, there were a few others in there, some of his most trusted crewmembers when it came to hunting for things of value. All had skills valuable to such things, and none of them had any particular scruples about laws, regulations, or preserving the sites they were dealing with. After all, one could not make omelets without breaking any eggs, could they? The flight to their destination was brief, a low-level affair that broke the sound barrier as quickly as they could without angering the Starfleet jackboots, though before long they found themselves in search of a landing zone, which the canopy made less than easy. "Sir," called the pilot, "I have flat ground to land on, but too many trees. Do like we did last time?"Well, that was not truly an obstacle where one Ilario Matteus Alfonse Vierdeau was concerned, and he just smiled. "Proceed."With that single word, both shuttles from the Calypso lowered themselves towards the ground and performed a series of circles, using their superheated thruster wash to burn through the canopy and level any offending trees that were in the way of their landing.

[Ensign Enola - Square, LZ-2 Colony] Enola continued to look at the map, which the captain and the others were now also looking at, and felt that she could mentally follow her colleagues, who were also in the tent. Still, she held back a bit. Although as a part-Vulcan she felt no real charm, it was simply not her style to speak with her emotionless voice somewhere in between and to tear her colleagues out of the conversation. Most of the species considered that rude. So she stood there, nodding once in a while to show that she understood what was being said, and gave the people who were speaking a Vulcan look.

[ Jurgha, daughter of Khar - Science Tent] Jurgha was silent for a moment as she stared at the map, and tried to think of more connections with the riddles. Maybe the ‘branches’ from the first riddle also referred to the branches of the river, not a tree. However, the entire point of them being here was to be prepared as possible, and they still didn’t have all of the clues. At least, there were still a couple that no one had answered aloud. “Anyone got an answer to three or seven yet?” She stared around at the assembled group, before turning her attention back to the map table. [ Ensign Ic Arbrell— Science Tent, LZ-2 Colony, Kerelia] He nodded vaguely to the Captain when she factored the possibilities of translation into the equation, and wondered how much of it might go for the other clues, too. As someone who preferred absolute nonverbal communication, Ic was relatively useless in imagining suggestions beyond poor interpretations of the words he did know. Knelt down to look at the map that Captain Eastman had pulled up, and struggling to focus on the riddles over the assorted conversations and scattered threads of others’ thoughts cluttering his own, Ic squinted at the topography where it matched the team’s and the neighborhood’s many churning sensations. Along the crook of a river, Enola’s impatience. At the peak of a hill, someone else’s inflated sense of pride. Distracted. He’d never really been in such a small pool of minds before. Ic was used to planets of billions, to ships of hundreds; these had grown easy enough to filter out, even growing into white noise at certain times of the day, as long as he didn’t stand too close to anyone. Of late, he’d gotten to know the uniqueness of the company of one— but there wasn’t a whole lot of work going on then. Or any at all. This was uniquely chaotic, wasn’t it? Too many people too clearly. Perhaps it wasn’t just the heat and the ( Jem Sparkles was not a phase) mom goss that slowed him down. Having a one-track mind served him just fine in the past, but right now, things just got stuck, and none of it felt helpful. Ic glanced up at the Klingon woman, then Bremmer, and rolled one skinny shoulder with a cautious shrug. “I think seven’s two,” he said quietly, and quickly returned his scattered interest to the volcanoes on the map. Following the brief run-in that Shavan and Kova had with a Caldonian in the park, his curiosity led him to look them up. He recalled something about various types of “Academic” that had interested him with their simplicity, but not enough to recall with any clarity. Still eyeing the map, he reached out to gesture to the craters with his first fingers signaling two. “Maybe something in there. Volcano and mate, like you said, Captain.” (Even though she hadn’t actually.) “Blackness creates life— their children— but I wonder how literally. Volcanic soil? That’d round out the nothing grows bit at the start of the clue."[ PO3 Eliska Bremmer - Square, LZ-2 Colony ]Bremmer would never know if the Captain had come to her rescue with whatever black magic she had worked on that blasted map interface to make the display more widely visible and to highlight the pair of volcanoes, but she wasn't about to complain especially given how close she had been getting to taking out that frustration on that defenceless console. Now two volcanoes appeared clearly, and the Petty Officer was looking for anything that might be its 'children' all around it in patterns of five, and eight. And there, she saw something! "Captain, Mister Arbell, look at those." Bremmer pointed out a network of five lakes that seemed to be trailing from the volcanoes. "Five children... bearing life."Then, she pointed to a series of barren ridges expanding in a totally different direction; she might not be a geologist and she could certainly not name the phenomenon that was behind such jagged, rocky features that were as lifeless as could be. But she could read a topographical map. "I'm counting eight ridges here. The wrong answer."Then, she turned to the officers, awaiting their judgement on their pronouncements. [Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Science Tent]"Yes, I have #3 right here, if you'll forgive the ghastly chicken-scratch handwriting," Judy answered Jurgha, setting her PADD down on the table. Leaving her own work for a bit, she looked at the five lakes. "Let's see which of these lakes is most unlike the others, that'd be the son. Kurjarian society has a patriarchal bent, so I'll bet that one points us in the direction we need to go."One lake happened to be more elongated than the others. "As for #7, it's definitely something to do with circles. 2 Pi - that's not a coincidence."

"No, let it go! You'll break it!" he shouted at the man holding the other end.
"Let it go, Matthew!"
[Matthew Harmon - A Pit (but not The Pit)]"It belongs in a museum!" Matt yelled at the traitorous Caldonian as he gave the vase a hard tug trying to get it out of his oponents hands. "You're making it even more tempting to shoot you!" he threatened staring deep into his eyes. After quite a few weeks of wallowing in his self pity, when Matthew had heard about the Kurjarian treasure on Kerellia he saw a chance to redeem himself, at least a little, and reclaim the lost items for the Kurjarians himself if he could. They didn't belong in the hands of collectors, criminals, or thrill seekers. It belonged in a museum.

[LTJG Chloe Hudson - The Shittle]The unmarked shuttle was an old beat up one nicknamed The Shittle. At least as far as appearances went, it was about as far from the clean, polished, sleek Starfleet shuttles and runabouts. Which was just what made it useful for these sorts of situations. Hopefully it functioned better than it looked. Chloe piloted the shuttle out of the port and followed their target towards the jungle. =/\= How are you doing, Ensign? =/\=She asked Rin as the followed from a distance. Hopefully he wasn't in over his head, but it was good to give people experience out of their comfort zones, and this was a relatively low risk operation for such a thing. "Can you tell what they're doing?" she asked Miren as it appeared their target had stopped. Chloe brought the shuttle to a slow barely moving hover.

[ Ensign Rin Zakir - the Jungle - Kerelia] Having been keeping a close eye on the pair of catmons (as well as Costa), Zak noticed one of the break off and disappear elsewhere into the canopy. Great, probably after him now, he winced as he tried to see exactly where it had gone. Undoubtedly, they had split up to take a target each, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing. One would be easier to deal with than two. The problem he had was that whatever happened here he would be spotted, whether he chose to deal with the would be predators or let himself get attacked (which would be dumb). He had already been warned that the woman he had been tailing would likely notice him sooner or later, so forty minutes actually hadn't been all that bad. Still, so much for the cover of the jungle! He crouched into the undergrowth, listening out for the predatory feline that had turned his attention on to him. He had his phaser in hand and set to stun, but he was also ready to spring into physical self defence if need be. Which would be likely. It was then that Hudson chose that very moment to contact him, and he let out a small groan as he answered. "This is Rin. Target still in sight, but probably both about to be cat food. Stand by.", he responded calmly. Charlie Fox (Costa), Matthew Harmon (Chloe Hudson)

[Costa - Jungle, Kerelia]Both hunters pounced at almost exactly the same time. Costa, for her part, was ready. She was still face-down in the dirt, inhaling dust and and tasting earth as she pressed down, hiding her alertness. In her hand, and clutched between her abdomen and the ground, was the knife. She waited, counting her breaths... Wang.Soft footfalls as the catmon padded swiftly, almost silently, toward her. Tu.A tense second, not even that long. A moment of clenched muscles - hers and the creature's. Serí.With a grunt and then a short shout, Costa rolled and flung herself flat onto her back. The knife was up and encountering resistance as it slid into the catmon's chest. Coming from the direction of her feet, and keen to grab a hold of her jugular and squeeze the life out of her with a powerful jaw, the strange feline had done most of the work with one leap. It had impaled itself, but there was no further forward movement, so Costa would have to finish the job herself. Her face now slick with its blood and screwed up from the effort, she heaved the thing away from her. It fell to the side, still very much alive and making the most heart-wrenching mewling sounds. She took a deep breath, and another to steel herself, then she rolled again until she was on her knees and facing the catmon from above. "Milowda vedi wamotim,"[fn]"We will meet again."[/fn] she whispered before slitting the animal's throat. Another deep breath and she was tearing her gaze away and moving to her feet. She wiped the blade once, then twice on her trousers, and finally put it away. Leaving the catmon here was a waste, and irked the boomer in her. But if she couldn't butcher it for dinner, perhaps one of its opportunistic family members could instead. Knowing there was another, and that it likely pursued her tail, she decided she'd better go and see which one had survived. She trudged back the way she came through the jungle for several hundred yards, and then loudly announced her presence. "To det ye?"[fn]"You dead yet?"[/fn]

[Staz Volkova - Kerelia - Shuttle]Once more, the Ochiran rolled her eyes as she felt the shuttle start to circle. Staz was starting to believe she would have been better off with that other woman. While this man had the resources, he didn't have the slightest bit of subtlety. "Oh, sure. Ruin the Federation's precious planet. That won't bring the Fleet down on our heads at all." She commented dryly, her grip tightening on her blade reflexively. She may have to kill them a lot sooner than she was planning in order to keep the Fleet off her back. But she'd bide her time, of course. Get on the ground first, see how they decided to proceed from there.

Tag Eliska Bremmer Both shuttles executed their maneuvers with precision and effectiveness, clearly having done so before and both pilots working in concert to both burn down unwanted trees and blow out any fires before they would become a real problem. It was one thing to leave an area scorched to bedrock, it was another to actually set the whole damn jungle on fire. Sure, there might be some noise made by the jackboots, but really what was it really in the end? Just some legalized thugs trying to flex their muscle. "My dear, one thing the Federation loves to make noise about is about all those rules they have and how breaking any of them is the end of the world. It never really is."When both shuttles touched down, both disgorged their payload. In this case, a grand total of a dozen rough-looking fellows carrying assorted gear to their personal preferences, and all looking as though the had some experience in doing such things. But then again, one did not need to be an expert, if one had the right people working for them. "Bosun, lead the way," Vierdeau called out, and the man he addressed sighed before looking at his tricorder, and setting off into the bush towards that treasure.

“Maybe not along the lake,” said Ic quietly, pointing out the lake that appeared most different to the others (with a tilt of the head and just a little imagination, it was clear now why this one should be considered the “son”) and drew with his fingertip a little line away from the zenith of the shore’s arch. “Triangulate that from an equidistant point along the river? Two pi radians, in which the treasure is the center.”
He tried to stretch his pinky finger to create an awkward manual compass, demonstrating the thought, if rather clumsily. With his index finger on a supposed midpoint and the pinky moving between lake and river, it appeared to be about a 45 degree angle.
The appearance of the landscape at that point on the map made him narrow his eyes. The longer he looked at it, the more it seemed likely.
“That... wouldn’t happen to be Landing Zone One, by any chance, would it?”

Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - Science Tent]Judy looked at the map, and the more she looked, the more readily apparent it seemed. "Oy vey iz mir." The last thing they needed now was a group of trigger-happy treasure hunters bringing their high-tech equipment to awaken the Tritters.
"Well, we'd best go secure the site before anyone gets killed. Don't bring more technology than you need. We'll beam over in 5 minutes."Then, she got a message from Chloe. =A= "Stay the course for now, Lieutenant. If you need reinforcements, send word to Mabel and she'll dispatch them, but for now, since there are strong hints pointing to LZ-1, we're holding our reserves... well, in reserve. Also, be sure to chronicle every crime they commit, including torching a forest with their shuttles, because that's the kind of thing I'd like to see prosecuted." =A=
The awkward use of military terminology ("holding one's reserves in reserve") was very much reflective of the fact that Judy had joined Starfleet late in life, and still had not fully embraced its mannerisms.
6 minutes later
[Capt. Judith Eastman(-Williams), PhD - LZ-1]The group - with plenty of analogue equipment like ladders and shovels - materialized in LZ-1, which was presently Tritter-free, and with a line of sight to a shaft about two meters deep. "Well, looks like someone was already here," Judy said to her subordinates, motioning for them to approach it.
