[Admiral Antoinette Ellis - The Spotty Alibi, Promenade, Front Ear Station]Approximately five days following the events of S2 - E8/M8Flanked by two expressionless and mercifully mute aides, Antoinette Ellis marched down the passageway that led to the lower Promenade decks of the wretched Front Ear Station, one officer on each side and placed carefully one step behind her. Though she might be a woman who was very difficult to please, even Antoinette could recognise that there were improvements to the Station since Parsinp had left. At the very least, there were no ugly crustaceans staring dolefully at her from water prisons as she walked by. The lobsters had been... disturbing. She had been informed that her first interviewee could be found here, in this disgusting dive bar for the next several hours, and so when she swept inside, she was the picture of purpose. "There, Admiral; Lt. Th'zhaar." The helpful officer to her right gestured toward the scientist. "Yes, well done," the Admiral shot back, her tone dripping with sarcasm, "You have eyes."Not even pausing to acknowledge the aide's flush of embarrassment, Antoinette approached the former prisoner of Caldonia. Her expression was a grimace as her polished boots made a terrible tearing noise when she walked across the floor; like velcro being pulled from its fastener. "Lieutenant," she greeted as she slowed to a stand in front of him, eyes casting sideways glances at the unwashed denizens of the establishment she'd found herself in. "I am Admiral Ellis. A moment of your time, please." In reality it was hardly a question, but Antoinette Ellis had impeccable manners. Shavan Th'zhaar

[Lt. Shavan Th’zhaar - The Spotty Alibi] Recently returned from Serenity, and currently off duty, Shavan was intent on a night of heavy drinking and not caring who he left with. He leaned against the familiar bar and picked up the glass of Orion rum that was set in front of him. The strong liquor burned his throat as he tossed it back, the first step toward welcome oblivion. Motioning the trill bartender for a refill, he turned and eyed a group playing cards in one corner. The latinum to support his habits had to come from somewhere, after all. Such plans were interrupted, however, by the sound of loud and fast-moving footsteps, and he glanced toward the source. A human woman, very clearly not a usual patron, was walking directly towards him. The brief statement, and ‘request’ that followed, was certainly not one that he had been expecting. And probably meant nothing good. Admiral Ellis was a name he’d heard mentioned somewhere, but never put a face to… until now. For a second his gaze slid past her, sizing up her aides and the distance to the door. However, he was neither immediately hauled off to the brig, nor able to discern the motive for such a visit. Carefully, Shavan gave the Admiral a gracious smile. “Of course.” Without waiting for further prompting, he turned and, taking his drink with him, led the way to the back of the room. Sitting down at a small, grimy booth, he gestured to the seat across from him. “What can I do for you, Admiral?”Felicity Ellis

[Admiral Antoinette Ellis - The Spotty Alibi, Promenade, Front Ear Station]Uninfluenced - that was the word that came to Antoinette's mind as Shavan Th'zhaar barely reacted to her unexpected presence. He'd even taken control of the situation, redirected the party to another area and began heading up the meeting himself, such was his apparent ease. It was a level of self-possession that the Admiral rarely saw when it came to dealing with most aspects of her position. The exchange likely would not begin to tax her intellectually, but it would potentially present a greater challenge than most of the others. What did present a very real challenge, however, was how she was going to avoid touching anything in this disgusting hellhole. When Th'zhaar oh so magnanimously offered her a seat in a public place, she raised her hand in response and snapped her fingers. One of the aides shot forward, produced a large handkerchief, and spread it across the seat. With a grimace she could not hide, Antoinette sat carefully. "It has come to my attention, Lieutenant, that your official debrief upon return from Caldonia was not completed. I am here to rectify that." She turned to her hovering aides and then waved them away. "Go and see if this establishment serves a decent whiskey. And arrange another drink for Mr. Th'zhaar, here." They both scarpered away, too quickly. An opportunity to get away from her was one to be seized, and it almost made her smile. She turned back to the officer across from her and folded her hands in her lap. "I have come a long way to fix this egregious oversight, and I have much to do back on Earth. It is in my best interest to get this done as quickly as possible." She smiled a slight smile, inviting him to believe the sentiment.

[Lt. Shavan Th’zhaar - The Spotty Alibi] So, that was what he had done to get the attention of an Admiral. Caldonia, of course. Shavan watched her sharply, noting the interaction with her aides and the display of disdain at their present surroundings. In contrast, he settled in comfortably, perhaps appearing more at ease than he really felt. He didn’t trust a word she said, but obligation to at least pretend to go along with it was joined by a touch of genuine curiosity. Interesting that she wanted to get this done as quickly as possible, so much so that she could not have scheduled a meeting. And yet, surely this could have been done over a holo call from Earth, or waited less than the four months since they’d gotten back from Caldonia. (Four months of pretending everything was fine, with more thrown into the performance than ever before.) Of course, it was not his place to contradict her on that aloud. And, considering that he had been expecting such a thing ever since the encounter with the Gorgon on the shuttle, he did not entirely disagree about getting this over with… and getting back to his usual evening plans in this bar, which he appreciated in part due to its usual lack of people like Admiral Ellis. Much about this situation was an egregious oversight, indeed. “I see. Yes, it was an oversight." Nodding assent but saying little, he simply waited for her to continue. "Where should we start, ma’am?” Felicity Ellis

[Admiral Antoinette Ellis - The Spotty Alibi]"An oversight, indeed," she agreed. For the briefest of seconds, in a blink-and-miss-it micro-expression, the Admiral's face reflected the feeling of victory within. She smiled at her first interviewee of the day, shifted in her seat just enough to lean back - though still not without touching any more surfaces than was strictly required, and continued the game. "Let's start there, shall we? You can explain to me why your Commanding Officers did not feel it necessary to debrief you, and why, in the wake of their negligence, you did not request one yourself."Then she gave a soft chuckle, completely manufactured of course, and pressed on. "One could forgive us the thought that you might be hiding something out here."

[Lt. Shavan Th’zhaar - The Spotty Alibi] Admiral Ellis phrased the question almost like she’d already caught him in a lie. But that was okay; surely he would not make the right impression by being completely uncooperative, or by playing dumb. By now it had occurred to Shavan that if he played it right, having the Admiral as an audience was an opportunity it would be a shame to waste. At the very least, the things she asked could be telling. He didn’t need to like or trust her at all for this interaction to go two ways. Though he would have to start by answering. “Well, I can only guess about their motivations. As I’m sure you already have.” So much for keeping this short and to the point. “Maybe they felt they already knew everything they needed to, or maybe it was an emotional decision. They did seem genuinely guilty about leaving us behind.” He gave her a brief, measured look while taking a sip of his drink, then shrugged. “So either way, there was nothing to gain from requesting it.” He narrowed his eyes a little. “Though I wonder what anyone would possibly think we’re hiding.”Felicity Ellis

[Admiral Antoinette Ellis - The Spotty Alibi]He was correct on one front; she had indeed already not only guessed, but assigned motivations. As driven by will and ego as Antoinette was, however, she was not quite arrogant enough to believe her first assumptions to be entirely correct. One of the reasons she was here was to test her own theories. At the weak response, she did scoff quietly. "I won't insult your intelligence, or my own, by entertaining "emotion" as being an acceptable reason for command staff to ignore procedure or neglect their due diligence. This wasn't some roll in the hay with a random alien during First Contact that we're turning a blind eye to here, Lieutenant, it's a political scandal of potentially galactic proportions."She paused in her speeching when her aides returned with their drinks. An Orion rum was placed in front of Th'zhaar, while a glass of something of an Earth whiskey colour was placed in front of the Admiral. Without waiting for another word, the two young officers made themselves scarce immediately. Barely able to contain a disappointed sigh, Antoinette decided it was safer to ignore the filthy glass, covered in thumb prints, and go thirsty. "You could be hiding anything. The true story behind your escape. What happened to Solin." Her eyes watched his face; sharp, searching. "Has the transport you stole even been properly searched and decontaminated yet?"

[ Shavan Th’zhaar - The Spotty Alibi] Shavan watched the Admiral with practiced impassiveness as she brought up the escape in response to his own prompting. “Of course the transport was searched and decontaminated.” That was standard procedure, after all. The disruptor that had killed Solin had of course been disposed of first. His fingers tightened slightly on the glass as he remembered their Kurjarian ‘friend’, dead by his own hand. The true fate of Solin would be indeed be very valuable information to the right person, with implications much bigger than his own desire to not return to prison. A galactic scandal, as the Admiral put it. Which was why he’d need a lot more motivation than this to share it. He took another drink of rum. “Maybe I could give you more useful information if you told me exactly what you were hoping to use it for.” A statement she could dismiss, but the underlying message was clear enough. [Admiral Antoinette Ellis - The Spotty Alibi]He thought he had power - it was cute. Antoinette was smiling, it would appear for no apparent reason. She could play the quid-pro-quo game when it suited, when the reward was greater than the offer, but this was not one of those times. "Lieutenant, please. There's no reality wherein I am required to explain myself to you."In truth, a good officer would offer all relevant information without needing to be prompted, certainly without levelling expectations at Admiralty. It would seem that Lieutenant Shavan Th'zhaar was not a good officer. This alone was not a problem, per se; a large portion of the Fleet was comprised of people who lived in shades of grey, or believed that they were entitled to question a motive before following an order. It was becoming clear that this scientist was one of them. "We are in a precarious position with the Caldonians, and they hold all of the cards right now. Our people were caught breaking several of their laws, putting us in a position that made it impossible to arrange your release. Then those criminals escaped; in the process killing, injuring and stealing equipment that belonged to Caldonia. One would think you would be keen to prove your usefulness at this juncture."

[ Shavan Th’zhaar - The Spotty Alibi] The reprimand was expected enough, even if it deepened his dislike of her. The meaning behind his words still stood; it was all part of the game. Though maybe it was time for a different gamble. Shavan didn’t see any reason to personally care about fixing the Federation’s relations with Caldonia, but he did want answers too. “Well, if you’re looking for a twist to put in that story, you won’t find it in our escape… but there could be something in how we were caught in the first place. Looking back, it was too convenient. Too many coincidences. Almost as if it was planned, and someone wanted all of it to happen.” In reality, Shavan didn’t entirely know if this was the truth Admiral Ellis wanted to hear, something she already knew, or just distracting, paranoid speculation. So he carefully watched her reaction, stopping before saying anything specific. Felicity Ellis

[Admiral Antoinette Ellis - The Spotty Alibi]"The Caldonian Xoteak," she offered in response, taking an obvious, educated guess that Th'zhaar thought him involved in their apprehension. "It would certainly seem that he had some knowledge of what was to happen." She had received intelligence that he was here, on this Station. The Admiral would very much like to talk with him, and the chances were it would be nowhere near as civilised as the exchange she was currently engaged in. "He was exiled, was he not? Hard to believe that someone would betray their kind for nothing."She watched him right back, wondering if he was going to toss the blame up the Caldonian ladder.

[ Shavan Th’zhaar - The Spotty Alibi] The immediate mention of Xoteak felt like another dismissal, or an attempt to get him to say more by forcing him to correct her. The exact role of the Caldonian exile was suspect, but seeing as they both already knew that, it was barely worth mentioning here. No… what he wanted to get at was something bigger. Xoteak could've been tricked too, and hardly could've orchestrated everything alone. Shavan clenched his jaw as his mind forcibly ran through the spiral of events leading to their capture, and he wondered if the Admiral’s last sentence had any double meaning. He took another drink, and answered carefully. “Exactly. So I’m more interested in who put him up to it.”Felicity Ellis

[Admiral Antoinette Ellis - The Spotty Alibi]"Then it would have to be someone pretty powerful, or have the backing of someone powerful, to convince him," Antoinette said, looking as though she was following this rabbit down the hole right alongside Shavan. Neither would have to mention specific names in order to make the point; Yatin and his machinations would be topmost on anyone's suspect list, along with his most vocal detractors. But there was something missing - a piece that the Admiral wondered if the scientist could provide, or if perhaps it was something he wasn't even aware of. "The pertinent question, however, is why. The Caldonians are in a good position with the Federation, in fact, their hand is much stronger than ours, and there was no need to strengthen their position. Why then would they seek to capture and imprison five of our citizens?"She leaned forward this time, expression suggesting she was engaged in the discussion. "What would that get them that they didn't already have, Lieutenant?"

[ Shavan Th’zhaar - The Spotty Alibi] In a flash of understanding, Shavan saw both the truth and the trap in the Admiral’s words. If her statement was to be taken at face value, and the Caldonians needed nothing over the Federation than the trillium they already had, the next question was obvious; who else had something to gain in this? Another power wanting to become the main customers for the trillium was a possibility, but at the same time, he already had a different answer. It just wasn’t one he knew what to do with. It went back to the Kurjarians, to the last minute plan to rescue Solin, and the way she turned on them in the end. Maybe it did make sense that Xoteak was indeed a dissident, and that their ‘mission’ had been exactly what it appeared to be. With just one catch: they were always meant to be caught. Having martyrs for the cause had brought outside attention down on Caldonia the way the Kurjarians couldn’t alone, and was far more effective than simply recording the Pit from the outside. And she wanted him to think it, to say more in the face of doubt. The urge to drain an entire bottle of rum got stronger. Still, Shavan would not back out, nor would he start giving information too freely. “You just said that the Caldonians have all the cards now. What are they asking for now that they weren’t before?” He leaned back a little and settled for draining his current glass instead. “Unless someone else had more to gain.”Felicity Ellis

[Admiral Antoinette Ellis - The Spotty Alibi]"Why, they're asking for you now, of course," the Admiral answered easily, not bothering to keep the amusement from her voice or expression. She knew that the Lieutenant was following along with the deeper meaning beneath the words of this conversation, so she decided to dig a little more. "For some, your being locked away and rotting in a prison is preferable to killing you all outright and making more martyrs. Both options will mean undue attention, but one is sooner pushed to the back of the collective minds of society. The plan itself to capture you seemed born of emotion, yet the execution itself had the rationale of a political mind."
