[Lt. Cmdr. Pierce Taggert - Front Ear - Personal Quarters]
[Captain Tenjin Raag - USS Wyvern - Ready Room]
Taggert sat at his desk, watching the insignia on his screen flash as he waited for his call to be answered. He was taking a sip from his coffee mug when the insignia disappeared and was replaced by the live image of his former and future CO. The Bajoran Captain smiled in a friendly greeting.
"Commander! I hope you're all packed. We finally have a solid lead on those slavers we ran underground last year."
Pierce's eyebrows raised in surprise at the news. "That's excellent! Hopefully we'll finally be able to put an end to this. Don't worry; I'll be set to go as soon as you dock."
"Let's hope so, Commander. There's no telling where they'll strike next if we let them slip away again." Captain Tenjin shifted slightly in his chair, regarding the man on his screen. "Though I don't suppose you're calling just for a status update?"
The Human shook his head, taking another sip of coffee before setting his mug on his desk. "I'm not. Have you had a chance to read the file I sent you?"
There was no mistaking the scowl on Tenjin's face. "I did. Have you?" The question was sharp, voice filled with incredulity. "You are aware this Lieutenant is on probation, yes?"
Taggert knew it would take some convincing for his Captain to approve the temporary transfer, but hearing his judgment brought into question pressed a sigh from his lungs. "I've been working with Lieutenant Niles since I arrived on this station, and he has been showing signs of progress. But since I had to fit him in between my duties as Department Head and training my replacement, I haven't been able to cover as much ground with him as I would have liked."
Tenjin's scowl deepened, and he pressed a few buttons on his screen, undoubtedly pulling up the dossier. "Asides from his tactical scores - which we don't need! - there is absolutely nothing here that says he will be an asset to our mission."
Okay, so that was true. But Pierce knew the other man well enough to know they hadn't gotten to root of the concern yet. "Part of what I've been working with him on is broadening his range of skills. He's willing to put the effort in, but there's only so much he can learn out here."
It was evident by the iciness in the Bajoran's blue eyes that Taggert was pushing the envelope. But he didn't get to where he was without ever doing a little pushing. His own eyes steeled as he matched the other man's gaze, unflinching.
"If the fairy tale Captains don't want him, what makes you think I do?"
And there it was. Satisfied, Pierce leaned back in his chair, hand resting on his mug though he didn't lift it yet. "I have the utmost respect for the Command Team out here. But their style doesn't work for everyone. Lieutenant Niles needs a firm hand, strong guidance, and a role model he respects. I don't know what the deal was with the former department head, but quite a few of these problems could have been - and should have been - addressed and fixed long ago. My replacement is going to have enough on her plate adjusting to the job. If I don't finish what I started, this man's entire career is going to go down the drain. Even you have to admit he's too young for that to be acceptable."
Now it was Tenjin's turn to heave a sigh, and he regarded the Human silently for a moment, fingertips drumming on his desk in thought. "I'll give him three months. But I won't interfere with what his current COs have already decided. When he returns to Front Ear, his probation will resume and it will be up to them what happens to him from there." A few taps on his screen, and the transfer request was approved. "You better pray this kid is worth it, Pierce."
Taggert only smirked and nodded, lifting the mug to his lips as the call ended and his screen returned to the still insignia.
