[ 2381.09, morning following Event 9: Flotsam | Avi Moz | Meeting Room, Security Offices, Frontier Station ]Avi Moz and the enigmatic, off-putting, and unwelcome El-Aurian Dugris Zaman sat on one side of a table in a meeting room in the station security office. It has been about fourteen hours since Avi had been arrested for alleged assault against the too-soft former Nyberrite Alliance crew Conor Lynch. Station command was obliged to assign a hasty solicitor to represent her during any contact with Federation investigators - it was a better deal than she'd had previously on the Orion homeworld, but there was nothing she was grateful for at the moment. She sat sulked in the chair, barely tolerating Zaman in the little time they'd had to confer. She'd gone over her side of things with him with nominal cooperation but was preoccupied. Her reputation implied a far greater level of criminality; but this was the worst thing she'd done for quite a long time. The pressure of it was starting in a mild torpor, a typical involuntary Bolian physiological response to fear and stress, a sort of defensive lethargy. Avi leaned forward and interrupted 'Sir Doug'. She kept her voice low. "Can you get me Andorian cocaine? Or a litre of human adrenaline? Something. Like now, before they come in? If you hurry..." He seemed shifty enough to have access. [NPC - Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman MBE, PhD, JD, MBA, FRS, PE, RA, CPA - Meeting Room]Apparently Starfleet couldn't do any better. They had to turn to Sir Doug to act as a public defender. He welcomed it. He wasn't all that bad as a lawyer, and he needed the money that the Federation paid for this kind of job, especially with the overtime, and he thought he also deserved hazard pay for this one. "As your lawyer, that's exactly the opposite of what you should do," he told his client. "You need to convince the Feds, and the judge, that you are capable of following the law, if you want a shot at that trademark Federation leniency."He reached into his pocket and pulled out a baggie of Turkish coffee powder. "Best I can do for you. You might need to snort it, but it is legal."

Avi's opinion of this Zaman dropped a few notches, but the consolation offering wouldn't hurt. She expertly sprinkled the dark brown, grainy powder into a tidy line. She closed one nostril, leaned forward and sniffed it with enthusiasm. Then she sat back and waited to feel anything other than the abrasive burning. At smelled good, but it was far too little to have any substantial affect. "I follow the law all the time," she said eyes closed, re-sulking. "It's my favorite thing." They'd have to see how lenient the Federation would be once they found out about her other warrants. Dugris Zaman

[NPC - Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman MBE, PhD, JD, MBA, FRS, PE, RA, CPA - Meeting Room]"As your lawyer, I have to advise you that you're not winning this in open court. You need a plea bargain," Sir Doug warned. "And plea bargains are harder to get when you sass the prosecution, like you just sassed me."Despite the fact that he hadn't tried a case in many decades, Sir Doug wasn't a fool. He knew this case was a prosecutor's dream, with a decent set of witnesses and an unsympathetic defendant. His only hope was to make her sympathetic.

Sass? Well then! Avi opened her eyes and gave him an impressed glance. She hadn't been called sassy since she was 10. Then she pinched at her nose for a second before suggesting her own defense. "It was self-defense. Not from the soft one," she clarified quickly as to make sure Zaman didn't underestimate her physical formidibility. "The Soteria, the Nyberrite ship. We're not friendly." To say the least. Avi wasn't used to sharing. The caffeine in the coffee grounds was helping her heavy eyelids. She pushed herself up out of the chair to pace a little, keep the blood flowing and stave off the evolutionary compulsion to crawl into a hole and hibernate. She would have preferred the adrenaline straight to the heart, but when needs must. Judith Eastman

[NPC - Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman MBE, PhD, JD, MBA, FRS, PE, RA, CPA - Meeting Room]"There was a time when self-defense could work for something like this. But that's pre-warp, and in some societies pre-industrial."It didn't help that, as the crime was committed on a space station, there was no planetary or regional law that might conceal some useful arcane loophole. "If you invoke self-defense, the prosecutors will query why you didn't go to Starfleet for protection. I don't think you have a good answer to that - not even an inebriation defense."

[Lt. Cmdr. Pierce Taggert - Front Ear - Security Meeting Room]This was undoubtedly one of Pierce's least favorite parts of his job. But it was necessary, and far too delicate to leave to someone who didn't have the experience in interrogations. So he'd spent the past few hours in his office, pouring over the victim's report, the medical records of his injuries, the items that security had found in the possession of Avi Moz upon her arrest. He really hoped she didn't try to plea innocent. The evidence really stacked up against her. When an officer let him know that Avi and her council were in the meeting room, he nodded a thanks. He'd let the pair have a few moments of privacy while he reviewed the file one last time to make sure he remembered everything. When he had everything he needed, he picked up the PADD and made his way to the meeting room. "Ms. Moz, Mr. Zaman," he greeted as he entered. "I'll let you know the recording of this conversation begins now. I suggest you heed your council's advice." He spoke directly to Avi as he stepped up to the table and took a seat across from her, setting the PADD in front of him. The Bolian looked exhausted. He didn't blame her if she wasn't sleeping well. Brigs weren't meant for comfort. "Let's start with you telling me exactly what happened."

"I was not inebriated," Avi said, testy. She'd never used the 'inebriated defense'- it would be admitting she lacked Bolian stomach. But there wasn't time for more collaboration; a grizzled old human in security gold and an officer's rank had arrived. Avi didn't recognize him. He gave off the distinct air of an aging canine, not a pet, but one that had been working its whole life. She'd met the type before. They were difficult to manipulate. Ugh. He called her 'Ms'. She hated that. But then, she didn't appreciate when anyone addressed her. Nor did she put much credence in his advice. Sure, he probably meant well, but he wasn't on her side. She demonstrated she felt that way by crossing her arms, keeping her mouth shut, and jerking her thumb at Zaman. As if she was just going to confess everything without the deal. [NPC - Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman MBE, PhD, JD, MBA, FRS, PE, RA, CPA - Meeting Room]Sir Doug would've been happy for more time with his client, but go-time was now, and Taggert seemed to want answers. "You know you can't ask my client such a vague question. Ask her something more specific, something she can answer, and she'll be happy to help."God knew this client wasn't going to obey instructions, but Sir Doug hoped she'd pick up the hint that, if asked a simple question that didn't incriminate her, she'd do well to answer it.

[Lt. Cmdr. Pierce Taggert - Front Ear - Security Meeting Room]Pierce resisted a sigh, as both defendant and lawyer proved why he hated this part of his job so much. "On the day of your arrest, did you speak to Conor Lynch?" He asked after a moment of careful thought. Tapping a few buttons on the PADD, he slid it toward her, revealing a picture of the victim in case she tried to claim not knowing the name. It was obvious she wasn't interested in confessing, so he would have to get creative with his questions.

Avi held the pause for a long moment, but decided against further unnecessary obstruction. She made a genteel flourish with her hand. "I did, in fact, speak to Conor Lynch." And, to anticipate the follow up, she added. "I knew him to be part of the Nyberrite Alliance and had questions for him in that capacity." Avi answered in this way for the benefit of Mr. Zaman to demonstrate that she could operate without 'sass'. "Oh -" she added to Taggert. "I was not inebriated at that time. Just feeling acutely ... " She scratched her chin, "... self-defensive." Jovireh Velal, Judith Eastman

[NPC - Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman MBE, FRS, PhD, JD, MBA, PE, RA, CPA - Meeting Room]Sir Doug was slowly coming to realize that the more he let his client talk, the worse things would be for him as a lawyer. This was one of those clients, the kind of client Sir Doug himself knew he could be. "You know, when people are stressed, they tend to forget details. My client would be a lot less stressed if she were offered some kind of deal."Maybe it was a Hail Mary, but Sir Doug felt that he was right there, bases loaded, down two touchdowns... was that even the same sport? He wasn't sure, but he felt he was in a bad position as a lawyer, that was the point.

[Lt. Cmdr. Pierce Taggert - Front Ear - Security Meeting Room]Wekl, at least they were off to a good start. Though Pierce had a feeling she was already going against her lawyer's advice by the way he redirected the conversation to ask for a deal. "I'm not the prosecutor," he replied simply. "But I can tell you the option of a penal has already been removed from the table." For some reason, the Federation believed that a more rehabilitative approach would serve better than a punitive one. "There's a good chance you won't even need to leave the station."Hopefully that "eased her stress" enough to continue talking. "Now, how did you approach Mr. Lynch to ask him these questions about the Nyberrite Alliance?" If she wasn't going to offer up a confession, he'd have to get it from her step by step.

Having little experience playing well with others, Avi was fumbling this barely earnest attempt. At least her lawyer was keeping his cool, casually introducing their side of things. Avi's hands itched for something to do; her thumb looked for a cigar between her fingers, but found nothing. She cracked her knuckles instead, then shushed the movement by crossing her arms again. "I've never been interested in penal," she threw away. But there were matters to address. She narrowed her eyes. "How did Mr Lynch say I approached him?" She's approached the soft wee man dressed as an Alpha Centauri cataclysmist and heavied him into a storage room, but there really wasn't a way to say that prettily. Jovireh Velal, Judith Eastman

[NPC - Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman MBE, FRS, PhD, JD, MBA, PE, RA, CPA - Meeting Room]Penal - off the table? Sir Doug was shocked. Even by the standards of the Federation, that was a very lenient decision. "Would you be able to tell us what my client might be charged with, based on the facts as you know them?" he asked, to get a more finessed and more general sense than what the client had asked. Maybe they just didn't know?
