[[NPC - Apazi Rhidum, Esq.[bio] - Replimat]A slim, fashionable Bajoran in a fitted grey business suit (human, of a European cut) and black skinny tie walked into the Replimat, after a full day of work. He was a crusading sort of lawyer, with a number of social injustices he hoped to root out in this sector, and tomorrow, he'd have to convince his new boss to back him; that was what government was for, after all. "Hasperat," he ordered from the replicator, and then took it to sit down at an empty table. Business was starting to pick up, and tables were slowly being filled. At present, Rhidum was blissfully unaware that his father was also on the station. If he knew, things would be... quite different indeed.

[ Vedek Dima Emmari | Replimat ]It was the final month of the year, and the ambitious Bajoran vedek was aboard Frontier station. He and a few others from Bajor were here to oversee negotiations for a proper temple. There were meetings of course, but he also had his religious services to provide for these far-flung Bajorans. It turned out, he wasn't the only one of these to find himself seeking out sustenance this late in the day, in the impersonal replimat of the Promenade. "Where I am from," he said to the other man, as a tidy hasperat appeared in his replicator window, "this is the beginning of our winter. I never thought I'd miss it." Talk of home never failed to elicit a conversation. Emmari pulled off the tight-fitting cowl he wore as part of his duties, and freed his salt-and-pepper hair. He itched at his scalp and adjusted his earring. Judith Eastman

[NPC - Apazi Rhidum, Esq. - Replimat]"I try to visit at a different time every year," Rhidum answered to the older man. "Mother wouldn't have it any other way."Rhidum had learned from his mother to appreciate the different seasons in their entirety. In the lowlands of the Kendra province, that was relatively easy to do. "What is a stargazer[fn]Regional slang for a Vedek, generally not derogatory[/fn] like yourself doing so far from Bajor?"Speaking in Bajoran, Rhidum was aware that his long time on Earth was showing in his accent, if only slightly.

[ Vedek Dima Emmari | ]A young man who honored his mother - a nice quality, to be sure. He stepped to a replicator and began scrolling through the menu. Emmari wasn't adventurous in his tastes, but wasn't otherwise picky. Now, he held a high status in Bajoran life which afforded him luxuries, but he did not embrace or expect them. He'd grown up in deprivation and it was still his comfort. "Hoping to establish a proper temple. Are you religious? I did not see you at our Ha'mara, I think. Mapa bread, mesto, and ... raktajino, strong." It was several months ago now that the vedek Dima was last here in the Kerelia sector, newly named, when he officiated the festival. It was not unusual for a Bajoran not to count themselves among the faithful, and while Emmari would not harshly judge, he was not above asking. "Forgive me - I'm Dima Emmari." His name was known in wide circles, although not universally. Judith Eastman

[NPC - Apazi Rhidum, Esq. - Replimat]"I only came to this region of space on Monday," Rhidum replied sleekly, sidestepping the question of religiosity. There was hardly any room to deny that the prophets existed, since they'd opted to reveal themselves, but worship was a different question entirely, and one on which the young lawyer was of two minds. "Apazi Rhidum," he shared his own name. "Your name sounds familiar. Did you speak on Earth at any point?"Truth be told, Rhidum wasn't sure how he recognized Vedek Dima's name. However, many Vedeks had made speaking engagements in the core worlds, to raise goodwill and funds, so that was his best guess.

[ Vedek Dima Emmari | ]"Apazi Rhidum," Emmari echoed with a smile to himself. On the surface the smile might appear welcoming, but indeed it was a smile of recognition, for Emmari knew of the Apazis. In fact, he was well acquainted with a few. But they were a large family, and he did not know this Rhidum. His food appeared in the replicator window, and he gathered up the tray. "Earth, the birthplace of the Federation. No I have not had that particular experience, an old wolf like me." There was no love lost between this particular vedek and the Federation. "I keep to our people mostly. Eat with me, won't you? We can be visitors to this station together." He nodded towards a dining area, tables and chair set out in the Promenade where one could people-watch. Judith Eastman

[NPC - Apazi Rhidum, Esq. - Replimat]Well, that was a wrong guess, but Rhidum shrugged it off. Such was the nature of guesses. "With pleasure," he accepted the invitation. He didn't mind the company anyway. "To clarify, I'm not a visitor. I'm starting work here," he gently addressed Vedek Dima's own guess. "Not for Starfleet, before you ask."

[ Vedek Dima Emmari | ]"Mmm! I must know more," Emmari said with genuine interest as he pulled out a chair for himself and took a seat. "Please," he bade. It was tradition for Bajorans of Emmari's generation that elders began their meal first, but he waived the privilege often, preferring a more equal footing when dining. "You'll tell me how it is, the Federation facsimile." He was referring to the hasperat. "You're settling here. What do you do? How came you so far-flung? This is the edge of things, you know." [NPC - Apazi Rhidum, Esq. - Replimat]Rhidum took a bite when invited to, enjoying his hasperat very much. For all the many culinary treasures that Earth (not counting England) had to offer, there was nothing like the tastes of home, or a facsimile of them. "I'm with the government... the Federation government, that is. A civil servant," he explained. "The edge of things matters more than ever, especially this edge, what with Rod Hatter."Rod Hatter[fn]NPC invented, and to be written, by Matthew Harmon [/fn] was a Councillor from a nearby system, and the leader of a small faction that, as it happened, was crucial to the newly-elected President's slim parliamentary majority.

[ Vedek Dima Emmari | ]The vedek gave young Rhidum a long look that could be difficult to parse, but he broke it off before the pause became too heavy. He smiled and sat back, taking a long sip of the hot raktajino. "Servant to one only to serve another," he said, any acid hidden by that smile. The smile of a man who'd had to smile through many hardships, smile in the face of many opponents. But Emmari ought to be more charitable today. Rhidum was exactly the kind of Bajoran that vedeks were meant to serve. "Tell me about this Hatter. Do I hear an Earth name in it?" Judith Eastman

[NPC - Apazi Rhidum, Esq. - Replimat]Explain Hatter. Now that was a tall order. Some things didn't quite fit general-purpose adjectives. "He's one of a kind. Very colorful type, even for a politician," Rhidum explained. However, at this point, he realized there was a more elementary question left. "He represents one of the human colonies here on the Federation Council."

[ Vedek Dima Emmari | ]Emmari tore the mapa bread. "Colorful," he repeated. "A multi-faceted accusation. What colors, in your estimation? Is he ..." Emmari chewed and looked up and to the left, summoning a litany. "Ostentatious? Philandering? Criminal? Ambitious? Or maybe you meant it more kindly. A passionate eccentric? An eager Terran explorer type? Earnest, bleeding from his heart?" The priestly class enjoyed wearing a pious mask, but they were the worst gossips. Judith Eastman

[NPC - Apazi Rhidum, Esq. - Replimat]"Some things you just have to judge for yourself," Rhidum answered. "Anything I say will just be reductive."Rhidum was, after all, an attorney. He had the reflex to answer questions with something to the tune of "it depends". He took a bite from his hasperat. "This is like eating a scroll[fn]Kendra province regional expression, referring to being dry and bland[/fn]," he said. "Is there a proper Bajoran restaurant on the station?"

[ Vedek Dima Emmari | ]Emmari accepted the deflection with a shrug. He'd have preferred to glean a bit more about the others' relationship, but he'd have to take what he already knew, that Apazi Rhidum was diplomatic, had ample self control, and was not out to impress a regionally prominent vedek. But at least they had a similar evaluation of the replicator's hasperat. "There is. Very authentic," Emmari said, delaying his own bit of information. "A friend of mine from Kendra province back on Bajor. A little hole-in-the wall place, open at odd times. The chef, he's bound to neither master nor schedule." Judith Eastman

[NPC - Apazi Rhidum, Esq. - Replimat]Rhidum's eyes lit up. "Kendra province, you say?" he asked. "That's brilliant!"Since the Vedek was here now, Rhidum had to assume the place wasn't open at the moment. "What's this place called?"It was peculiar that Dima didn't say the name. Interesting choice.
