[ Vedek Dima Emmari | ]Emmari tore of more mapa bread. Fellin's fare truly was of a quality to inspire excitement for the wandering Bajoran. Then, as if he'd not noticed, Emmari's eyebrows lifted. "Oh, that's right - it's called Apazi's. Any relation, do you think? You have his coloring. His name is Fellin. Apazi Fellin. We met during the Occupation." Judith Eastman

[NPC - Apazi Rhidum, Esq. - Replimat]Rhidum's jaw dropped. Surely, surely it couldn't be that Apazi Fellin. And yet, considering everything else Emmari had said, there was no way it could be anyone else. He slowly tried to gather his thoughts. "I know him well. Didn't imagine he'd be in this part of space," he said, composing himself. "Or running a hasperat stand. So not the type."

[ Vedek Dima Emmari | ]Emmari couldn't help but smile. "Does he not? He seems quite content." Emmari sipped his drink and sat back. Rhidum's avoiding his question about relation was difficult to conceal. "The Apazi's wouldn't be the only kin to have tangled ties after the Occupation, in the," Emmari considers his words, "in the sudden sharp wind of liberation. Everything laid bare, all systems undone. Top to bottom." The vedek inspected Rhidum's face. "If not Fellin's son, surely a nephew." Judith Eastman

[NPC - Apazi Rhidum, Esq. - Replimat]Dima seemed to try to get the answer out of Rhidum, as was to be expected. The young man's reaction was hardly subtle. "It's not as much to do with the occupation. He was very... cold. Making hasperat takes a warm soul."What was he even saying? He was sounding like Mother. No, worse, he sounded like aunt Pesizia. A warm soul? What did he even mean by that? It was definitely a phrase lifted from aunt Pesizia. "He is my father, yes."

[ Vedek Dima Emmari | ]Cold? Not Apazi Fellin. Emmari expressed as much though not without words, letting his posture and facial expression doing the talking. It was an evaluation of a father that perhaps only a son could have. "Ah, but everything has to do with the Occupation," said the vedek. "And what do you expect? You live. He does as well. And look at you, a lawyer, even. Federation schooled? This is very impressive, but what, your childhood lacked in happa nuts?" Emmari was not trying to be cruel, but his tutting grin could be taken that way. Rhidum's generation, they were so hopeful and kind. The starry sky was for them. But this did tend to make them starry- eyed. Judith Eastman

[NPC - Apazi Rhidum, Esq. - Replimat]Rhidum turned red at the Vedek's tongue-lashings. What did he even know? Perhaps he knew the old man now, but a family history, a lifetime, was something altogether different. Grasping for words, Rhidum finally found an old proverb. He'd respond to this meanness with polished wisdom. "Vedek, in Kendra province we say that a tree's roots are under the ground for good reason," he recited, sounding at least a bit smooth.

[ Vedek Dima Emmari | ]Emmari ate more and smiled more gently, not wishing to push the younger Bajoran further, not when the humor was one-sided. Kin of Fellin's ought to be a friend of his, if not merely a child of the Prophets Vedek Dima was meant to serve. "They do say that," he agreed, retreating a little. Indeed, Emmari's own family tree had its own gnarled secrets that were best kept buried. "But you're here now. What will you do? Can can I get you a spade, or will you keep getting your hasperat from the wall?" It was difficult to avoid vedek'ing. If he was not stirring the pot, he was guiding souls, this Emmari. [NPC - Apazi Rhidum, Esq. - Replimat]Rhidum picked up on the step back. It seemed he had made Dima aware that he had poked a bit too far, one way or another, and yet the Vedek still pressed on a litte. "This thing must be very high in fiber," he referred to the bland hasperat, at once saying nothing and everything. Perhaps he would have to reconcile with his father someday, or perhaps not. However, if there was one thing Rhidum believed, it was that such things moved gradually, and that they only moved if they were moved to move.

[ Vedek Dima Emmari | ]"Designed not to offend non-Bajorans," Emmari surmised. He continued to work on his humble meal. "So tell me, will you be here long? Have you found your calling with this Hotter," Emmari asked, making no attempt to get the name right. "Or, is this a short step on your journey. Do you wander like so many of our youth?" Many found it hard to settle, but were adamant not to acknowledge the damage of the Occupation on their trajectory. Judith Eastman

[NPC - Apazi Rhidum, Esq. - Replimat]At this point in the conversation, Rhidum was in an ambiguous mood. Maybe it was a defensive mechanism for one who saw his future in public life. "I focus more on what it is that I can do, as opposed to where I am," he explained. "Which way I trim my sails is in part a function of the winds."There could be no telling what might become of Hatter after the next general election. He could become quite irrelevant, and then the resources available to Rhidum in this place would become paltry.

[ Vedek Dima Emmari | ]"Well put," Emmari said. "And what function, exactly, do the winds require lately?" It was easy for the vedek to shift the sands of a conversation, in so much that he could be a little imp one minute and a curious old man the next. With a little provocation, he'd sing like a finch or snarl like a wolf. Judith Eastman

[NPC - Apazi Rhidum, Esq. - Replimat]The Vedek's temperament was interesting, shifting from one state of being to a totally different one so easily. "Mine is a very dynamic role. In this region, you have to be a little bit of everything," Rhidum answered, indirectly (consciously or otherwise) alluding to the fact that Dima had been a little bit of everything in these few minutes. "The brunt of the work is in bringing the Federation's regulatory state to these places."

[ Vedek Dima Emmari | ]"Kerelia," the vedek replied, inferring much or assuming too much. "Have you been down yet? It's as verdant as you've ever seen. And no sentient species, none at all, or none apparent. A home, ready for all who need one. I do hope the Federation is up for the task of stewardship. Perhaps with you there to help, the Prophets have answered my prayers before I thought of them." "Or maybe you mean the Nyberrite Alliance." Now that would be interesting. Judith Eastman

[NPC - Apazi Rhidum, Esq. - Replimat]
"Kerelia is part of our job, although I'm more interested in the already settled planets," Rhidum answered. There weren't a lot of fat cats wronging the little guy on Kerelia yet, unlike some of the other worlds.
"As pleasant as this conversation has been, Vedek, I must go. I have a conversation with my supervisor tomorrow - she's ex-fleet."
Having excused himself, Rhidum went off. He did indeed have to impress the former Starfleet captain who now supervised him.
Exit Rhidum
