[Lt. Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) et al - Hobooken Terminal, New Jersey - September 2375]
The silent, smooth commuter train, the most advanced incarnation so far of a technology 5 centuries old, rolled into the equally old but well-maintained Hoboken Terminal, which had received trains from Summit (the Eastman-Williams clan's home base) and beyond for just as long.
"Well, here we are," Judy pointed out. "Now, we get to enjoy the best piece of the commute I had before the war - the New York skyline."
She stood up, motioning for the extended group to come along and out of the train: Max, Thomas, Anna, and her Chief Engineer and wartime best friend.
"I know Max gets a little seasick," she pointed out, feeling her slowly-growing, once again blonde hair (she'd had it in a bob, and let it go white, during the war) brushing against her neck. "I hope you don't, because the best way to take in the Manhattan skyline is by ferry."
The native Manhattanite navigated her entourage through the commuting crowds, towards the ferry docks, thankful that Lawrence and baby Michael would only join at lunchtime, and weren't here now.

No, no seasickness, Saya replied with a slightly raised eyebrow. At least, I don't believe so. I've never suffered from motion sickness, however, so I believe I can safely generalize to water travel. She had to trot to keep up with the quickly moving family, but she was accustomed to keeping up with Judy, so she fell into a quick stride that she could keep up for extended periods.
Saya was grateful for this extended leave. The war had been brutal and had affected the young hybrid deeply. The turnaround of Bajorans helping liberate Cardassia still sent her reeling. And now Cardassia was in worse shape than they'd left Bajor at the end of the Occupation. Saya just didn't know what to think about it all. She'd had a level of prejudice against Cardassians since she'd been young, reinforced by her deep suspicion that her parents had been murdered by an agent of the Obsidian Order, though she'd always tried to not let it show if she had to be around Cardassians. Now she pitied them.
She shook her head to clear it and tried to look ahead through the crowds, but at 5'2", she just couldn't see over the majority of people. It was a good thing most of Judy's family was fairly tall. As long as she could keep Max in sight, she'd be fine.

[Hoboken Terminal, New Jersey]The group continued to make their way through. Max had his hand on Judy's waist, very protective of her after the hip replacement, while Anna and Tom both kept up with their parents' strides. "It's remarkable how little has changed here since before the war," Judy observed, as she led them through a corridor to the multi-berth ferry terminal attached to the station. "New York is just such a resilient city. It's weathered wars, plagues, terrorist attacks...""16 years of my mother-in-law," Max cut in, poking fun at onetime Mayor Diane Eastman (2349-65). "I never told you this story, did I?" Judy addressed Saya, as she led the group onto one ship, to the uncovered top deck of it. "When we were getting married, the choice came down to having the ceremony officiated by a rabbi, or by my mother, since she had that authority as a Mayor. Max chose the rabbi, because my mother talks... about as much as I do. I was also just a little pregnant with Thomas at the time, and somehow we kept Mayor Eastman utterly oblivious of that.""Auntie Saya! Look! There's the Manhattan skyline!" Anna pointed out enthusiastically. "Do you want me to take your picture with it?"The proud parents smiled at their enthusiastic daughter. Taking after her father's love of painting, she'd become an amateur photographer, though she preferred 2D pictures to the more sophisticated holophotos.

Saya ducked her head and smiled at Judy's story. The older woman really had so many amusing anecdotes. It was difficult sometimes not to simply let go and laugh out loud. Saya'd been thinking recently about that, too, and why she continued to hold herself to such rigid standards, but it was so difficult to change after so many years of donning the mannerisms of a Vulcan. It was difficult to shed the facade.
She couldn't say no to the child who called her 'auntie'. The first time Anna had done so, Saya had had to leave the room to bawl her eyes out at the unexpected emotions that had overwhelmed her.
If you like, she answered easily moving to the railing of the ferry. Where would you like me to stand?

[Ferry, Hoboken Terminal -> Hudson River]Anna took that very well. She smiled, and then set down her backpack on one of the chairs to get out her camera and tripod. "Where you are is good," the young girl said. "Maybe a little more to the left. My left, I mean."She steadied the camera with both hands, and then snapped a few shots as the boat started sailing. "Do you mind if I pop in?" Judy then asked, looking at both of the young women in turn. "Just a quick photo, and then I can play tour guide again."Anticipating the affirmative answer, she handed her sunglasses to Max for safekeeping, and gently adjusted the waist of her lavender-colored dress. "Don't worry, I have the contacts. Not flying blind," Judy reassured, alluding to a time when her glasses had fallen on the Bridge, and she'd spent a moment desperately scrambling for them. She'd begun to use a chain, or contacts, for anticipated battles. From their angle, Judy and Saya could see the station quite clearly. "You know, it's funny. From about when they invented the canoe, up until about 400 years ago when they developed deep tunnels and long bridges, ships were the best and only way to travel," she observed, ever the Civil Engineer. "Mom! I can't take a picture while you're talking!" Anna complained.

Saya shifted to where Anna indicated and stood still, though her silver and purple tunic flapped a little in the breeze. Her 3/4 sleeves were slightly wide and the hem draped to mid-thigh over silvery grey leggings. Her purple flats were comfortable for walking, as Saya expected to be doing a great deal today.
She nodded her agreement to Judy joining her and scooted a little further to the side to allow her friend into the frame.
Judy's comments made Saya smile slightly, something she would be surprised to see in pictures later. She was accustomed to being described as 'dour' and had no concept of how different she looked when she allowed a little bit of emotion to show.
It is a pleasant way to travel, Saya answered after Anna had snapped a few more photos. I am looking forward to seeing more of the city, as well. You've spoken of it so frequently, it feels as if I've already seen many of the sights.

[Ferry, Hudson River -> World Trade Center, Manhattan]Judy put a hand over Saya's shoulder for the picture, refraining from a more tactile and/or silly pose out of consideration. Her young friend's comments made her chuckle a little when they were done, as she turned around to lean on the handrail while facing the city. "New York is a very unique place," she affirmed. "I don't think words go quite far enough to explain the feeling of being inside that concrete jungle. It's not unlike the Grand Canyon, in some ways.""Maybe the skyscrapers prepared mom for being shorter than all her kids," Thomas sarcastically joked from his perch. "I still have a chance, young man. Anna is still small," Judy protested, looking at the 9-year-old who was engaged in putting away her stuff. The boat made its way along, and soon docked on the West Side of Manhattan. "We're now docking near the World Trade Center," Judy announced. "Have you heard of it before?"Rather transcendent of the centuries, the place was still a complex of skyscrapers, presided over by one immense tower. Disembarking the ferry, the group would notice a modest structure consisting of a green roof slanted above a building, almost inconspicuous amidst the skyscrapers.

One side of Saya's lips tipped up at the family's teasing. It had been a difficult thing for her to get used to, these family dynamics. Her own family had been positively staid by comparison. Oh, there had been some teasing, especially her father to Saya and her mother, but it had always been gentle poking in comparison.
But Saya understood Judy's height difficulties, perhaps better than Judy herself, as Saya was only 5'2". Nearly everyone towered over her, including Judy.
She turned her attention to Judy's question, eyes narrowing slightly as she thought back over what she knew of Earth history. It might have been something Judy had mentioned once. I think so. Is that the one that was destroyed by terrorists in the early twenty-first century? Saya peered around with interest as they disembarked. She actually hadn't every visited very many large cities and always found them fascinating.

[World Trade Center, Manhattan]
"That's right," Judy answered. "The September 11th attack of 2001. It's one of the defining events of New York City's history, but I think that memorial there isn't for that."
She approached the peculiar structure, found a sign, and then, as she retrieved her reading glasses, was pre-empted by Thomas.
"It's about the Irish Hunger," the teen read, happy to outperform his mother. "But it was built at the same time."
"Ah, yes. Another of humanity's great unforced errors that drove immense tragedies," Judy remarked. "The property system in Ireland at that time, like much of 19th-century Earth, was one that had wealthy landowners with more money than they could spend, and the poor farmers living in wretched poverty. So, when a disease struck Ireland's potato crops, that was all it took to drive the Irish all the way to starvation."
She sighed as she noticed Anna running ahead to the elevated landscape of the memorial, followed closely by Max. She then realized the two of them were engaged in a playful chase, which brought a smile to her face.
"There's a reading of human history that says we, as a species, more or less tried to wipe ourselves out, but failed," the older woman commented to Saya.

There was much tragedy in Earth's history, Saya said with a thoughtful nod. She stopped to read the sign explaining the memorial as Anna ran ahead.
Oh, they used stones from all over Ireland. How interesting.
She smiled to herself when she realized that Max was chasing his daughter, and followed at a slower pace, examining the interesting contours of the memorial.
I suppose most planets have their share of tragedies, but humans seem to have a flair for marking them with interesting, and beautiful, memorials.

Judy followed, advancing with careful strides in light of her relatively recent hip replacement. "Humans do have a tendency to commemorate events using structures. It's interesting, considering buildings are simultaneously both more and less permanent than songs and stories," she philosophized.
Then, they were approached by Max, bringing with him Anna in a fireman's carry.
"Look what I caught," he told the ladies, playfully taunting the young daughter.
"Only because he distracted me!" she protested. "I can't talk and run at the same time."
"Maybe if you tried a little harder in gym class, you'd be able to run a little faster," Judy ribbed, drawing an eyeroll from Thomas and an indignant look from Anna, whom Max then released onto the ground.
"In any case, I imagine the reason there is such a beautiful memorial to the Irish Hunger here in New York is that many of the Irish came here, to this city and others in America, to escape starvation. The 19th-century United States was a much freer and less intolerant place than Earth's other countries, which drew immigrants to it. It was very imperfect, but in some ways it was the seed that grew into the pluralistic, multicultural, free Federation of today," the family matriarch commented.

It was so difficult sometimes not to simply laugh outright at the antics of Judy's family. They had so much fun and were so free with one another. Saya had loved her parents, and they'd enjoyed one another's company, but it had never been as light and carefree as this. Of course, she'd been raised on a ship, mostly alone with her parents as they carried supplies to refugees and others in need.
She watched with sadness in her eyes even as she fought the curl of her lips.
Saya hooked onto part of what Judy was saying and responded, It feels as if the multiculturalism of the Federation has been badly damaged in the last few years. People seem less trustful of others since the infiltration of the Founders. It's had quite a detrimental effect on, well, every aspect of life, it seems.

Judy shook her head. "Unfortunately, every society that's hinged on pluralism and tolerance is fighting against the tide of most humanoid species' internal wiring," she lectured, as she motioned for the family to follow her onwards. "Our fundamental instinct is Judy and Anna, who look similar, have a similar background, culture, and means, against the entire Alpha Quadrant. Expanding our tribal circle to include humans with a different culture, like Max, took millennia. Expanding it to humans who look different, and then to non-humans, is progress of the last few centuries, and all this progress is on shakier ground than we like to believe. A little bit of threat, and we recede back to the small tribal unit of Judy, Anna, and maybe Max against the entire Alpha Quadrant and Gamma Quadrant. It's happened thanks to the Founders, it's happened with most other major disasters, and it happened after September 11th."
As Judy talked, they walked, travelling another block and reaching the 9/11 memorial.
"When we're lucky, the tribalism loosens up after a few months, years, and we're all embarrassed at how speciesist or racist we'd been. When we're not, we start wars of our own, like the Federation-Klingon War, and the Klingon-Cardassian War. What's so frightening about the Founders, in my opinion, is how they gamed us."
"I think wars are very silly," the young Ms. Williams pointed out, feeling quite profound.

[World Trade Center - Manhattan] Let us hope that those feelings will fade quickly, Saya said mildly as Judy led them off to another memorial, this being the one Saya had thought they were at before. Saya's brows rose in surprise at the size of the memorial. At least, it appeared the entire area was dedicated to the event. She could see another massive pool beyond the one just in front of them, surrounded by many trees. She gave Anna a speculative look and said gently, Sometimes war is necessary. Would you have had Bajor remain under the control of Cardassia? Or should we all have stopped fighting and allowed the Dominion to overrun the Alpha Quadrant? I don't ask to be cruel, but to encourage you to think about the exceptions, those times when fighting is the right thing to do. Saya was afraid that Anna might still be a little young to completely understand such topics. From the little girl's perspective, war had taken her mother away and kept her family apart for a number of years.

Anna hesitated for a moment, seemingly perplexed by the question, before she answered. "Of course not, but they started," she replied. "If someone starts a war with you, you have to defend yourself and do what's right, but it's silly to start wars."
Judy and Max both smiled. "At this age, 'he started', or 'they started', is a very strong claim," Max pointed out to Saya. "Unfortunately, we can't make the Dominion and the Cardassians go to their rooms, Anna." "So next time Tom steals the remote, can I have a war with him?" Anna asked. "I don't steal the remote. I take it because I'm the older brother. It's mine," Thomas disagreed. "This," Judy said to Saya. "This is war."
