Personal History
Early Life/Pre-Starfleet Career:
For as long as she could remember, the one thing Caroline wanted with all her heart was to be a joined Trill like her mother, Alara Len. Chubby toddler fingers painted the Trill spots that had barely begun to grow in. As she grew, she studied the lives of joined Trill and their famous symbiotes. Slender clever fingers applied the makeup that darkened the Trill spots that only grew faintly along her temples and down her neck. Despite being only half Trill, too human to have a fully formed pocket in her abdomen to hold a Symbiote, Caroline was certain she could convince the Symbiosis Committee to accept her as an applicant. Was absolutely certain. Despite repeated appeals though, she was drummed out of the Symbiosis Program for not being Trill enough. Well, of course, their official stance was “lacking the proper temperament.”
Eventually she stopped trying to darken her spots. What was the point of trying to look like something she would never be? With all the drama, and impetus of youth, she fell into despair. The unnatural melancholy darkened her usual sunny disposition, and her parents, concerned as they were, sent her for counseling.
It was here where Caroline discovered her true calling in life. Psychological testing. She wasn’t thrilled at first being subjected to therapy, but the more she learned about the methods of testing, the more she wanted to find out, not only about herself, but others. Still in her late teens, and needing a career, she turned to medical school, with a focus on psychiatry.

Please write a brief answer to 3 of the following (a sentence or two for each is fine):
Your character's most painful experience
At this point in her life, being booted from the Symbiosis program. Her mom practically groomed her from birth to be joined, and it’s all she ever thought she wanted out of life. Learning she wasn’t good enough was a huge blow..
Your character's best or favorite experience
The first time she got drunk. It was an entirely magical experience, the most she’d ever laughed in her life to that point. She can remember it all in a golden haze, well mostly fuzzy because of the drink. The moment she became one with the universe and everything, particularly the floor next to her bed was spiritual. Everything was great, until it wasn’t. All in all, it was worth the five hours she spent throwing up the next morning.
Who is your character's role model and why?
Dr. Eloise Yates. The counselor her parents sent her to for her depression. She taught her coping methods, and changed her life around. They still keep in touch, and Caroline sees her as a bit of a surrogate mother.
Please write a brief sample post from your character’s perspective:
[Counselor’s Office]
”Hmm… Well, I think we’re done here, unless you’d like to start being honest with me. All you’ve done so far is waste your time, and mine, by giving me rehearsed answers that you seem to think I want to hear. This isn’t a quiz you can ace by cramming in advance.”
The older woman looked up from her PADD, the look on her face was obvious she wasn’t amused with the situation.
”Fine, Dr. Yates, you want some honesty? Have you ever been told the thing you want most in life, that you’ve worked so hard for, will never happen? And no matter how hard you tried, you were only half the person they wanted? Years of your peers looking down on you because they thought you weren’t good enough? I didn’t make friends, they were competition, and they never let me forget I wasn’t good enough to stand where they stood. Honestly, I’m so tired of it all.”
Caroline raised her hands, framing the sides of her face. Forcefully, she dragged them down, smearing the makeup that filled in and darkened her Trill spots. She held her hands in front of her, looking down at the streaks of brown inky kohl that stained her fingers.
”I never told anyone, but Len, my mother’s Symbiote, communicated to me in the womb. It was fascinated, it’d never had a host who’d been pregnant. I don’t know if it’s normal for a host’s offspring to imprint on their symbiote like that. But I could remember things, music, places, that I’d never experienced before. I had almost… I don’t know, a taste of what it was like to be joined, in those shared memories. My mother treats being picked by the Symbiosis Committee as the greatest experience and honor of her life. I know she’s always been more proud of being chosen as a host than anything else, including me. Alara Len plays the concerned parent alongside my father, but unlike him, they’re just embarrassed by me.”
Dr. Yates, had her eyes intent on the young half-Trill’s face, the fingers of one hand rapidly filling in notes, though her concentration was on the girl. Finally, a breakthrough after five sessions. She’d begun to lose hope on ever getting through to her. But now the dam was spilling open, and the words kept tumbling out.
”I can’t stand living on Trill anymore. Hosts and their symbiotes are celebrated, practically hero worshipped. The reject half-Trill daughter of the illustrious Len gets whispered about, some people don’t even have enough tact to keep it to a whisper. So yeah, I’ve been a bit out of sorts. I just, I don’t know what to do. Dad’s worried about me, but mostly, he just focuses on keeping my mother happy. I guess that’s what brings us here.”
Caroline shifted uncomfortably on the sofa, and wiped her hands unceremoniously on her pant legs. She could feel Dr. Yates looking at her, with that steely gaze she’d grown used to. Being judged wasn’t something she was unaccustomed to, but it was the lack of rancor that slipped past her guard. The counselor wasn’t poking for weaknesses to torment her with. It was sort of freeing in a way.
”It’s funny, Alara Len used to be my role model. I wanted to be just like her, a joined Trill, devoting my life to science, and the betterment of others. Now, I can’t stand her.”
The counselor paused in her note, taking to interject.
”You could still pursue a career in the sciences. Bettering others is a commendable goal.” She kept her suggestion minimal, not wanting to interrupt lest the girl’s tongue decide to freeze up again.
”No. I don’t want to be like her. I don’t want to treat people I’m supposed to care about like an experiment. You know she wrote papers on childhood development? About me? Like I was her own personal lab rat, providing her with empirical data. Who does that? Who convinces their child that this is something to aspire to?”
Caroline’s hands balled into fists on her lap. It was a day for a lot of firsts, it seemed. She couldn’t stop herself from talking, and letting everything out.
”Do you think we can be done talking for now? I’m not… I’m not feeling very well.”
”Of course. These sessions are to help you, and we can break any time you wish. I only have one request, homework if you prefer. Try and make a friend. Just talk to someone, anyone. Keeping yourself closed up and locked away not only deprives you of experience, but everyone else from experiencing the joy you can offer. Next time, we can talk about your efforts, ok?”
