[Lt. Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) et al. - Hotel, Jerusalem, Earth - January 2378]
Most people would have found this day to be a grueling, outlandish adventure. For Judy, it was tuesday. The 61-year-old officer, mother of four and grandmother of two was not easily worn down.
She'd had to orchestrate the bat mitzvah of her youngest - her daughter and look-alike Anna Eastman Williams - at the Western Wall, swat away at emergencies from her infant grandson Michael throwing up to Anna's dress ripping in the elevator at their hotel, and (along with the ever-helpful Max) made sure the caterers did their job properly. It was grueling, it was tiring, but Judy had made war in the courtroom against her first husband, and on the Tempest against the Dominion.
This was going to be easy. Explaining to Saya exactly what this ancient wall meant, why they pelted Anna with candy after she finished her Torah portion, or what that portion was.
The Eastman-Williams clan made their way to the hotel suite of Judy's good friends, Kyo and Saya. Max led the group, followed by Tom, the 16-year-old he and Judy had brought into the world, the prima donna Bat Mitzvah girl Anna, and Judy herself bringing up the rear.
"Police! Open up!" Judy hollered as she pounded on the door. Both teenaged children glared at her.

[Chief Petty Officer Ozu Saya and Family - Hotel, Jerusalem, Earth]
Kyo cuddled the giggling infant as Saya put the finishing touches on her hair. She'd opted for a more complicated style than usual, taking the time to braid and twist it into an elaborate Bajoran masterpiece. It had taken her years after growing it out to learn how to do it.
Mama's almost ready, he cooed to seven-month-old Evekh. Then we'll see Aunty Judy and have a party.
And I think that's her now! he said, lowering his voice to a whisper and ducking his head to nuzzle Evekh's belly, bobbing his way to the door. He raised his head and called out, You'll never take us alive!
Evekh giggled again and babbled at the sound of his daddy's deep voice.
Saya rolled her eyes at the silliness of her mate and called, Come in! It's open. She turned to face the door, taking her hands from her hair. Her fingers brushed the name charm and IDIC on her earring (a habit mostly forgotten) before lowering to smooth her lightweight dress before the door opened.

[Hotel, Jerusalem, Earth]
Judy entered the hotel suite, the clip-clop of her orthopedic shoes muffled by the carpet, in contrast to its distinctiveness in the Starfleet environment.
"Hello there, children," she greeted Saya and Kyo, before heading for the infant. "And hello there, little man. Who's a cute little gentleman, huh?"
"It's good to see you," Max greeted Saya and Kyo, before eyeing his daughter.
"Thank you for coming to my Bat Mitzvah. It means a lot to me," Anna said, putting on a passable effort because she knew that, even as the youngest, she would still not escape mom's wrath.
And indeed, Judy gave a little approving nod, and a look from the corner of her eye, as she tickled little Evekh.
"I'm really hungry," Tom complained, staying by his father's side.
"You gorged yourself on candy - that wasn't for you - whereas I've only eaten a bagel and two apples all day, and you don't see me complaining," Judy admonished the son, leaving Evekh. "But of course, I don't matter. I feed you, and clothe you, and proofread your essays, and tutor you in math. Mother dearest lives to serve."
Tom rolled his eyes, embarrassed and frustrated with his mom, as well as the misdeed she'd brought up.
[Earlier That Day - Western Wall, Jerusalem, Earth]
In the mixed-gender "Israel" plaza of the Western Wall, Anna finished reading her Torah portion, in accented Hebrew, and then the speech she had prepared. Promptly, those assembled cheered, and then some of them (strategically selected and seeded near the back) threw various candies her way, as is tradition. The young woman waited behind the lectern, where her notes were, until the throwing was done. At that moment, her brother sprang up from the front row and began to collect the candy from the floor, stuffing it into his pockets, arms, and mouth.

[Hotel - Jerusalem]
Hey, Judy, Max Kyo greeted turning the baby upright so he could see Judy properly.
Evekh promptly stuck out his tongue and blew a raspberry at his godmother before squealing in delight and reaching for her.
Saya smiled at her child but turned her attention to Judy's daughter. We were honored to attend, she said solemnly. The ceremony was quite beautiful. Thank you for inviting us. She knew it was more likely that Judy had initiated the invitation, but Saya wanted to give the girl, or young woman now, the benefit of the doubt. Perhaps we should head to dinner, she suggested after Tom's complaint. Saya grabbed the baby's bag and headed for the door, offering Kyo a raised brow glance to ask if he was ready to relinquish the baby.
He shook his head with a grin, more than happy to hold onto their son as long as possible.
[Earlier - Western Wall - Jerusalem]
Saya and Kyo had arrived with little time to spare before the bat mitzvah ceremony, Evekh having decided to grace his clothes with an impressive fount of vomit just before they were to leave their hotel room. It necessitated a change of clothes for him and daddy before they got out the door.
But here they were, slipping into seats in the back just a few minutes before things started. Saya had wanted to be able to slip out quickly if Evekh became disruptive. Other than one excited squeal when candy started flying overhead, he remained quietly content in one of his parents' arms.

[Earlier - Western Wall]
There was, in between the arrival and the candy portion, a whole set of events.
Guiding the whole process were Judy and her cousin, Rabbi Nathan Eastman. Max stood dutifully to their side.
"Friends, family, thank you all for coming. Toda raba," Nathan opened. "We are gathered here to celebrate a ceremony both old and new. The Aliyah, the young Jew's first reading of the Torah, has been a significant event to Jewish families since time immemorial, but it is a more recent tradition to include women in this ceremony." "Our dear Anna rejects the idea that she can't do something her brothers can, and she's right," Judy added, taking over. "Several of her relatives will bring the Torah book, and then she will read us a portion, which she's practiced, in her lovely voice, and then she will share some words of wisdom of her own, inspired by what she will have read for us."
The happy parents took their seats in the front, while Anna's oldest (half-)brother, Lawrence, her maternal grandfather, Jon, and her maternal great-grandmother, Estelle, carried in an ornately decorated scroll. Nathan unrolled it, and Anna stepped up.
"You let her come here in that dress?" Judy's mother Diane whispered to Judy, referring to the excess of leg. "She's her mother's daughter; doesn't listen to anybody," Judy whispered back.
Then, they heard a microphone squeak, followed by the voice of the young woman. "I will be reading from the portion Shemot, the first portion of the book of Exodus," Anna announced, and then began reading. She went through it with a measure of cockiness, masking her nervousness, chanting the ancient Hebrew words in the correct melody, with an accent.
Once that was done, the book was carried away. Then came her speech, in which she first alluded to the honor of reading the beginning of the book that was, in fact, the founding myth of the Jews, then the honor of doing it here, at the site of the former temple, inserted a jab comparing her mother to Pharaoh, and finally...
"The book of Exodus also has lessons for us. We need to ask ourselves, is the Federation an heir to the Israelites, or to Pharaoh. Are we really good, benevolent, and egalitarians, or are some species riding roughshod over others? Worlds who consider joining the Federation, afraid after recent events like the Dominion War, really need to wonder whether they are making the same mistake as the Israelites, and whether they, too, will have an Exodus."
Some relatives looked stunned and scandalized by the final assertion, but Judy and Max couldn't be prouder.
"We of the Federation must remember this, and strive not to be Pharaoh."
The applause began, a bit uncertain at first, but then louder, and then the candy was thrown.
[Later: Hotel -> Yehuda's Camp Market]
"Yes, let's go," Judy agreed, leaving her passive-aggressive verbal offensive for a bit.
Max led the way out of the room, followed by the two children.
They went down the elevator, to the ground floor, and then exited into the streets of Jerusalem on this chilly winter evening.
"We will be dining today at a restaurant in Shuk Makhane Yehuda, the Market of Yehuda's Camp," Judy explained. "It's one of those places where Jerusalem's three big population groups intersect. There are the Arabs, the secular Jews like ourselves, and the Orthodox Jews, and, since this city attracts the most fanatical of religious minds, not all of these groups really get along. For example, if mini-me wore that dress in the Orthodox prayer area of the Western Wall, she'd be in deep, deep trouble."
"By the way, what did you think about my speech?" "mini-me" asked, trying to distract while silently accepting her mother's awkward nickname for her.

[Hotel --> Yehuda's Camp Market]
Saya and Kyo followed Judy and Max's family out of the hotel, Kyo bouncing Evekh in the way he liked, making the infant giggle hysterically the whole way down in the elevator. Saya tucked her hands into her jacket pockets before they exited the hotel. Traveling with Judy was always an adventure.
She listened with interest as the older woman explained the area and turned to Anna with a small smile when the girl asked about her speech. I thought it was interesting, she replied carefully. I actually wanted to ask you or your mother to explain a little more. I didn't fully understand the reference. Saya had spent many hours quizzing Judy on Earth history in general and Jewish history specifically. While she knew the basics of the Hebrew exodus from Egypt in ancient times, Saya was curious more about how Anna had connected that to current events.

[Yehuda's Camp Market, Jerusalem]
Judy looked down at her daughter with a smile, as if to say, "go ahead."
"Well," the young woman started, mimicking this verbal habit of her mother's. "The book of Exodus tells the story of how the Israelites left Egypt, where they'd been enslaved. The parasha, portion that I read covers the start of that, when the Israelites leave the land of Canaan, where there's a serious famine, and go to Egypt. The problem is that after a generation, the Pharaohs stop trusting the Israelites, because they're different, and they enslave them instead."
The two parents could be seen smiling proudly, pleased with the clever daughter they were raising. Sure, they didn't agree with many of Anna's fledgling ideologies, but they were proud of her for thinking the way that she was.
"Your metaphor was a little... what was the word we'd said?" Judy gently asked the kid, as she led the group into the market and down the open-air passages, past a collection of stands. "Provocative, mother," Anna answered, whereas Judy had intended her to say "hyperbolic". "Sometimes, you have to exaggerate for people to listen. You do it all the time." "You have my big mouth all right, mini-me."

Saya nodded sagely, having had her share of experiences on the receiving end of Judy's 'big mouth'. She offered the older woman a smile, an expression that came far easier to her in recent years than it used to, as she thought back to their many trips and adventures together. Yes, Judy had had a massive impact on her life.
Thank you for explaining, Saya said solemnly. Your mother has had a great deal of practice explaining concepts about Jewish culture and history to Kyo and me. Every time I think I have a full grasp on it, I learn something new.
She intended to say more, but was cut off by a sharp cry from Evekh as the infant tried to squirm out of his father's arms and grasp a colorful hanging.
Whoa, mister, Kyo exclaimed, holding the baby tighter.

Evekh's scream-and-a-squirm naturally drew attention, both from the group and a nearby merchant who glared at them.
"Looks like someone else is getting impatient," Judy observed. "Let's pick up the pace."
Judy began to accelerate her walk, and the group followed suit.
"Anyway, Saya, there is such a depth and a wealth to the Jewish heritage, that you could devote your life to studying it and still find more and more. I have a long list of Jewish history book recommendations, that someday I'll get to. Maybe after I get these two into a good college."
Both children glared at Judy as they then approached a restaurant.
"This place is called Azura. It's not exactly a posh restaurant, and the portions don't look too big, but it's delicious and remarkably filling," the veteran officer explained. "I remember Judy's parents invited us here, during our engagement, before these two were born," Max reminisced. "Well, Anna never was born. She was cloned, as far as anyone can tell."

[Yehuda's Camp Market - Jerusalem]
Saya kept an eye on Evekh in Kyo's arms as she listened to Judy and they made their way through the market to finally arrive in front of a small, busy restaurant.
It smells amazing, Saya commented, and it's obviously popular. Will we be able to get a table with enough seats together?
Most of the tables were occupied already and none of them were large enough on their own for a group as large as theirs.
I'm sure we can pull a couple of tables together, Kyo commented, switching Evekh to his other arm. Unfortunately, this put the baby close enough to make a grab for his father's earring, which he promptly did. Kyo jerked his head to the side just in time to prevent a painful tug, which of course caused Evekh to start crying. Kyo raised his eyes to the sky for a moment and began bouncing Evekh to distract him. And a baby chair? he questioned.

Ever practical, Judy got to pulling in some help. Casting her grey eyes about, she found a young waiter who didn't seem too busy.
"Young man," she addressed him. "Could you help us get together enough seating space for a party of 7? And get us a baby chair?"
The waiter looked at the odd group, and his mind got to work.
"I can seat you in the back," he offered, and motioned for them to follow. In the back, there were still vacant tables, and the screaming infant wouldn't disrupt their business too much.
"Thank you very much."
As they walked, Judy noticed both of her children looking judgy and displeased about the embarrassing incident. Judy eyed Max, signaling to him that it was his turn to deal with the younger generation.
"You were just as bad when you were that age," he reminded them, being a little more straightforward and less prone to guilting than his wife.
Soon enough, the tables were brought together, and the waiter headed away to check if they had an infant chair.
"I want to tell you it gets better," Judy told Saya and Kyo, before cocking a head towards her offspring. "Unfortunately, that's not the case."

Evekh settled as they entered the restaurant, easily distracted by new sights and sounds. Kyo sat at the table, far enough back that the infant couldn't reach anything. He unwrapped the utensils in front of him and handed Evekh the spoon to play with while they waited.
Saya sat to his left, setting the baby bag on the floor between their chairs. She held out her hands in offer, and Kyo swooped Evekh high in the air before transferring the little one to his mother. Evekh giggled and swung his spoon around, nearly braining his mother, before bringing it to his mouth to gum at. He babbled happily as everyone got seated.
The waiter returned within a couple of minutes with a well-worn wooden, high-backed high chair. Kyo and Saya automatically scooted their chairs further apart to allow him to place the chair between them. Thank you, Saya said as it was set down.
I think we're getting used to it, though we haven't been out with him in public much. It's a bit challenging, she finally replied to Judy. Evekh is generally happy, but I believe he might be overstimulated by all of the new people and places over the last few days.

Judy and Max both nodded sagely. They'd earned some wrinkles from these battles.
"There's a lot more going on here than on a starship," Max agreed with Saya, remembering the time he'd spent with Judy on the Whirlaway after the war. "I know even I was a little overwhelmed after spending so much time in space. I had serious allergies act up." "You always have allergies, dad," Tom reminded, showing the Eastman side's hereditary argumentative streak.
Judy just chuckled, as she dug into her purse to retrieve an annotated menu, courtesy of a local friend.
"We'll be ordering hummus to share all around, as is customary. I think, looking at our head count, two servings; that's our appetizer."
Her grey eyes darted about the limited span of her reading segment, flipping over the various notes.
"Saya, your options are, unfortunately, a little bit on the limited side. Everything is okay, but limited as veggie options go."
From her two sides, Judy noticed Anna peering over at the paper, while Max retrieved his readers to do likewise. Tom stuck to his own menu.
"Kyo, the 'must try's' on my list are the Azura - the eggplant with beef - and the sofritos. Those are the flagships. I do think just about everything should be fine, depending how adventurous you're feeling on unusual meats."
"Does someone want to go half-and-half on the cow lung and something else with me?" Anna asked, looking at her parents.
"Actually, mini-me has a good idea. We could have some kind of sharing scheme so we can each sample multiple menu items."

The eggplant with beef sounds really good to me, Kyo said. But I'd be willing to share some things around if everyone else does. He was generally open to try most new foods.
Saya said with a small smile, You know I can find something nearly everywhere, even if I have to put a dish together from sides. She leaned over to peer at Judy's menu, quickly identifying the couple of dishes that didn't contain meat. How about the lentil soup? Evekh can have some of that, too, as well as bits from whatever Kyo has. He's developed quite a diverse palate between the two of us.
She turned to lift Evekh into the high chair, buckling him in and leaving him to now bang his spoon against the small attached table. Saya winced slightly at the noise and reached down for the bag, raising one hand defensively to keep from being bonked on the head, and retrieved a soft stuffed dog, offering it to Evekh hopefully.
The baby contemplated his favorite stuffed toy for a moment while drooling on the spoon, then dropped the utensil and reached for the dog with a happy squeal.
Kyo unobtrusively removed the spoon from within reach while Evekh was distracted.

Judy chuckled at Saya, as well as her two relatives.
"Just because Anna is nosy, doesn't mean you two have to be as well," she told Max and Saya. "Not everyone has to look at my menu."
She gently adjusted her pantsuit's jacket, as Max then spoke up.
"Everyone can order their first choice, and we'll share samples," he suggested. "And Anna, if you don't like your order, I can swap with you. I'll have the beef sofrito."
"Good idea," Judy commended. "The lentil soup should be fine."
"I'll have the lamb," Tom piped up on his side.
"I'll try the goulash, and we're all covered," Judy added. "Anything else? Orders? Ideas? Complaints?"
