[Chief Ozu Saya - Promenade]
Saya smirked slightly at her subordinates' skirting of the truly dismal state of the station. It is, indeed, a challenging opportunity, she said dryly.
Well, shall we each take a board? Or perhaps work in pairs? We may find that there's one problem affecting all of them, or each may have its own difficulties. Only one way to find out. Saya actually enjoyed doing things like this. Sometimes it was refreshing to work on a simple maintenance problem rather than worry about keeping the station together as a whole, or doing paperwork. The downside of being the chief engineer was that she rarely actually got to do any engineering; she spent perhaps 90% of her time dealing with stacks of PADDs on her desk.

"I think pairs will do," Judy answered to Saya. "Let's keep the age averages about even. Ms. Som, you're with me."
Judy picked out one board, over to the right, and strained to crouch down beside it. She then removed two small panels, accessing the control terminal and the circuitry.
"Well, let's take a look."

Kaya followed Eastman who cracked the info board open right away. The commander just went for it, didn't she. She knew Eastman was hands on, but it was unusual enough for command that Kaya still noticed. There was no accusation, of course, that Commander Eastman was playing - she came from Engineering. She knew what she was doing.
Kaya stepped around her and tapped the screen. The screen flickered awake, populating with a floor plan of the current deck with key locations labeled. There were all sorts of options available, and Kaya started navigating through them. She didn't get very far. Any time she attempted to access the directory, the board sent her back to the main screen. Her Starfleet credentials weren't letting her into the Starfleet only areas. And a video message from the previous commander of the station kept sliding in to announce the start of a station-wide Bajoran holiday.
"This thing's definitely bugged out," Kaya said with a sniff. "Can you get into the diagnostics from down there, commander?"

[Damian - Promenade - Early Morning]It seemed they were being split into teams, or at least, being paired up according to apparent age averages. With Eastman and Som having moved over to the right-hand board, it was only fitting that they took the left-hand one. He glanced over his shoulder to look at Saya and then over to look at what the other two were doing, enough to see to it that he began to undo the two panels - his gaze jumping between that of the panel and of the board itself. Flickering and fizzing. He brought a knuckle up to rap at it twice, in some dire hope that it would work with a simple touch. Damian gave a ghost of a wry smile at the thought as he re-focused on the circuit panel, audibly grumbling at the sight that it presented; some parts fried, some parts hanging loose. It was a miracle that the boards worked at all. "Whoever wired these needs to go back to school."TAG: Judith Eastman, Ozu Saya, Kaya Som

[Saya - Promenade]
Saya went along easily with the large engineer, dropping into a crouch as Damien removed the panels. Prophets, that's a mess, Saya said with feeling. I have nothing against...creative repair work, but not if it causes danger or further difficulties.
She pulled her tool bag over her head and set it on the deck beside the console. We need to shut down the power before we do anything, which is going to consist of starting over from scratch, I believe. Saya pulled out her hyperspanner and reached carefully inside with it, thankfully able to avoid any of the sparking isolinear chips. A moment later, both the info board and the control panel went dark. Let's pull out all the chips and start testing them. We'll have to see if the relays are damaged, as well.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Promenade]Judy retrieved an appropriate pair of glasses, not wanting to strain her aging eyes, and examined the diagnostic panel. Not that there was much to examine. "Oy vey," she muttered, taking in a flat rainbow of death. "Who hurt you?"She looked over to Kaya, and then the duo on the other info board, and then Kaya again. "I'm starting to think hitting it with a hyperspanner is as good an approach as any," she quipped.

Kaya stepped back to get a look at what the commander was seeing, then she looked back at the board. "How is this even functioning at all? Looking at that, the screen shouldn't know what day it is..." But it did! Despite the disaster behind the panel, the board still seemed to think it was sort of working. Kaya followed conduit around to the side and barked an indelicate laugh. "What..." "It's spliced into waste reclamation." Kaya looked around to grin at the Commander. "This thing's literally running on &@%#. I'm not even mad." Clearly, the board malfunctioned and instead of fixing it properly, they frankenstein'ed it into another system to monstrous effect.

[Damian - Promenade - Early Morning]A mess was certainly an understatement. Whatever it was, it could hardly be counted as a screen. Damian watched as Saya dealt with turning the screen and the circuit off, his eyes focusing on the other two - Som - who had exclaimed that it was spliced with the waste reclamation. Certainly not something that ordinary engineers had to do on a daily basis, nor could the older man figure out the reasonings behind needed to go to such extremes. "Sounds good, chief." He replied, beginning to extract the first of many isolinear chips. In dire hopes that his handling of it would not break it even further (as had been the running recurrence in the engineering school). "Either my vision is going slowly or there are too many chips and spots where they shouldn't be located in the circuit." Whoever had decided to do this, if they were still around, was going to receive the front end of a fist sandwich from the ex-sec/tact officer. He heaved a sigh. "Would it not be easier to pull it all out and completely start from scratch rather than individually need to go through each chip and relay?"

[Saya - Promenade]
Surely this wasn't intended to be serious repairs. I cannot fathom how such poor work was allowed to stand. Saya expelled as frustrated breath. Actually, I can, she muttered.
Looking over Damien's shoulder as he began removing chips from the machine, she wrinkled her nose, not liking the idea of starting from scratch, but realizing quickly that it might actually be more expedient.
Saya finally nodded. Scrap it all. Judy, she added, raising her voice slightly. We're going to start over on this one from scratch. It's too much of a mess to salvage.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Promenade]Judy tapped on the hull of the monitor, rather displeased. "If the maintenance records on these things even exist, we'll need to go back and figure out who did this. This is just... remarkable," she judged. "In any case, hopefully we'll be able to salvage some of the hardware. Individual cables, the processors, the likes."She pulled out the diagnostic pattern, and then a whole nest of wiring, and a mess of chips. "It looks a little like spaghetti and meatballs, doesn't it?" she commented, putting in a little levity.
