[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - Main Engineering - Early Morning]
Truth be told, Judy enjoyed the early morning she'd been putting in with engineering. They gave her a chance to get her hands dirty, get a sense of the rumbling on the lower decks, and keep her own skills as an engineer sharp. And, at her age, she was already an early riser.
"Good morning, early birds," she greeted the engineers assembled as she set down a tray of refreshments on the conference table. She'd brought a kettle of coffee, along with Starfleet-standard (ugly) mugs, as well as an assortment of (kosher) breakfast-y sandwiches. "Let's do quick introductions, and then we can get to work fixing the station up. As you may know, I'm Commander Judy Eastman, and for anyone wondering, I join you folks because sitting in my office all day would drive me nuts."
Naturally, they had a lot of work to do before the station came to life for the day, but there was time for brief introductions.

[Crm. Kaya Som - Main Engineering]
Mornings were fine. The concept of time on a starship was abstract anyway. But early morning briefings were more challenging where one ought to look alive and able for the first officer. Commander Eastman came from engineering so they had her special attention. Kaya didn't know enough about her to gauge if that was a good thing.
The young Trill pushed some loose hair over her ear and snuck a look around the room. The officers had the chairs around the table, the rest of them filled out the standing room. No one was moving for the coffee. Someone had to take the initiative. There was no possible way to get in there with art or subtly, but Kaya made an attempt keeping her head low, sliding in between two officers.
"Elbow," she whispered, bumping someone. "Op, rhem*."
She got the coffee into the mug and settled back in. Breakfast, classy move, commander.
* Thanks

[Damian - Main engineering - Early Morning]
As far as everyone else was concerned, Damian was an early riser. Albeit one who sat in his room for the better part of the waking period. He braced himself upright against his bed as he heaved a sigh, getting ready for the day. They had arrived back at the station, only for him to have to skirt rather long conversation with his son (and by proxy, his ex-wife). Damian got out of his room, headed for the turbolift which would take him to main engineering deck where they were being assembled for the day, making sure that e was going to arrive fairly early for his shift. "Lift, main engineering, direct." The journey was quick as the doors pinged open, stepping out and entering the conference room.
Though it was not long after (or it had been that long) before other engineers began to assemble, and the furor of chatting with one another began. At least until the Commander had walked in. Damian could not help but look upon the pips longingly, his eyes turning cold briefly at the prospect of knowing what had slipped out of his hands before adopting a lesser stoic look. From the looks of the station, and what had been flying around, it was in dire need of maintenance. Or at least a constant one. The explanation of why the commander was joining them needed not been ask, for she had answered it already. He inched forward, watching as others went for the breakfast.
Damian waited, waited for his turn. Eyes glancing around, the awkward dance which people decided who would go first. "Crewman Damian Oerstadt." The words tasted strange in his mouth, though to a trained ear would be enough to place him as a German-born native. With the introduction over, Damian went straight for the coffee, pouring himself a mug full and putting it to his lips.

[MCPO Ozu Saya - Main Engineering - Early Morning]
Saya hated being late, yet here she was, rushing into her own department meeting several minutes behind. Thankfully, Judy was there and had things in hand. Saya rushed in and took her place beside the first officer.
I apologize for my tardiness, she said to the group at large, then lowered her voice to say just to Judy, Evekh woke and wouldn't go back to sleep. She was clearly slightly frazzled - hair not quite smooth, and in a less elaborate arrangement than she did most days, jacket slightly twisted so that one end hung a couple of centimeters longer than the other, and face flushed from frustration and exertion.
Saya took a deep, calming breath and nodded greetings around the table, making eye contact with a number of those with whom she'd been working closely.
Shall we? she asked Judy, taking her seat.

Judy put on her reading glasses and reviewed the PADD she had, once the round of introductions was done. Saya came in, and confided in her, so the older woman replied to her quietly. "I'd tell you it gets better, but... it doesn't," she quipped. "I'm not going to say who keeps me up at night, but Anna knows who she is."
She then turned to the group. "Okay, folks, so as you know, we're still working through deferred maintenance from Parsinp's era. Today, we need most of our folks working on the cleaning bots, since they're still acting up, but the Chief and I will be taking two of you to work on the Promenade. The interactive information boards have been faltering, if you know the ones I've been referring to, the ones with the directories, and we want to get those sorted out before the morning if we can."
She looked around at the engineers assembled, and picked out team members. "Okay, Crewman Som," she pointed out the one she recognized. "And Crewman... Oerstadt, you're with us."
She looked over at the German (she recognized by the accent), with a question. "Did I say that right?"
She grabbed a sandwich, one with eggs and molten mozzarella cheese, and took a small, graceful bite.

More maintenance was ahead of them, but Kaya hadn't expected different. The Mac wasn't the most glamorous billet but Captain Ellis had a good reputation and Sovereign class was a great rig. If asked to choose between greasy, linty cleaning bots and station-board view screens Kaya would choose the latter, but she wasn't feeling picky this morning.
A deep voice introducing himself as a crewman caught Kaya's ear and she leaned forward to get a look. Right, Oerstadt, that was his name. He was old for a human wasn't he? Guy looked like he'd crawled directly out of a marine's uniform. Solid, measured, dignified, battle-scarred up - a sharp contrast to the other baby-faced twenty-somethings that populated the rank. There was absolutely a story there.
"I'll go," Kaya piped up, hoping this meant the floor was open to volunteers. She lifted her coffee mug. "Love a good info board. Can't have citizens, you know, getting lost."
Visitor information, that had to fall under Starfleet's mandate for diplomacy or peacekeeping somehow. A noble effort, business directories. Little arrows go bleep bloop, this way Sir, Mix, or Madam.

[Damian - Main engineering - Early Morning]
It was not too long after the introductions that the doors to engineering once again slid open, revealing a familiar face; their chief engineer - Ozu Saya. He took note of the frazzle state that the other was in, the hushed exchange in words, his eyes narrowing in intrigue briefly as he flickered his eyes away, as if he were intruding into a personal conversation. He took another sip of his coffee as the explanations and meeting was laid out for them. His brow raised, Parsnip's era?, though opted to remain silent to hear the rest of the orders out.
Cleaning bots.
Damian clenched his jaw, hoping that he was not on the detail for that. He'd do more damage than good, taking the rusted things apart in hopes to better understand what made them run before realising that they had the complexity that was far beyond a phaser or its rifled companion. Slowly releasing the tension against his teeth, he waited to hear out who was joining the commander and the chief engineer. His blue eyes skirting briefly around at the 'competition', with some of them doing the same before his eyes locked back on the commander as she inquired to the pronunciation of his last name. He gave a nod of his head, "Yes ma'am." Certainly appreciating the fact that she had wanted clarification on the pronunciation.
He glanced over at the Trill, putting face to name and recalling it to memory. Crewman Som. His eyes narrowed a little in his own mental assessment of who he was about to work with. Eager, certainly. Though he knew most crew members were; fresh-faced and some hadn't even seen a lick of the Dominion War. With that thought, he took another sip and made for another refill.

[MCPO Ozu Saya - Main Engineering --> En Route to Promenade]
I know, Saya muttered back as she took an egg and cheese sandwich and took a quick bite as the first officer laid out the plans. She was exceptionally grateful for Judy being there to get things started.
She nodded in agreement with Judy's selections of who would work with them. Both crewmen had shown themselves intelligent hard workers.
After a couple more bites of sandwich, Saya stood and waved off the majority of the engineers to their assignments, saying in the almost grandmotherly tone she'd adopted with her people, Off you go, my fledglings. You know where to reach me if needed.
Any of the engineers who had been resentful of her coming in as a. a new person, b. an enlisted person in charge of them, and c. someone who would be wrestling order from the chaos, were disarmed by the tone that she took and the fantastic bourekas (Judy's recipe) that she'd brought to her very first staff meeting. There were a couple of holdouts, but they had been cowed by the arrival of the very large and very scary-looking assistant chief engineer George Hugo. He hadn't even had to actually say anything. When the dissenters saw him at Saya's back, they instantly shut up and fell into line. A couple requested transfers, which Saya was more than willing to give, but overall the tone in engineering was far more cheerful and efficient than when they'd arrived on the station.
Glancing between Som and Oerstadt, Saya said, Go grab some tool kits and meet us at the lift.
I need to get my tools from my office, she added to Judy.

Judy nodded. "Of course, of course. Get whatever you need," she told them. "I'll grab a spare toolkit myself."
And so she did, taking a small kit from storage and heading to the turbolift. She waited patiently for the engineers to get their particular tools and whatever else they needed, appreciative as ever of the skill and dedication of this department. True, the entire crew had to pick up the slack from the months of mismanagement in the past, but it was Engineering that had been working their tuchuses off to bring this place to a presentable state.
At last, they were all present.
"Deck 9, Main Promenade," Judy ordered the lift, before turning to the crew.
"You're both pretty new here, crewmen, aren't you?" she asked, trying to start a conversation.

'Fledglings', Saya had called them and Kaya smiled to herself. They were a flock of golden canaries, they were, canaries with pneumatic wrenches and warp-capable nests. Kaya'd taken one last drink from the coffee before leaving the cup and following the commander to the turbolifts. With her hands clasped behind her back, Kaya nodded to Eastman's question. "That's right, commander," Kaya said, "I was on the Centaur before this. That was my first assignment." As she answered, her gaze shifted from the commanding officer to the tall, craggy Oerstadt. "She saw action in the Dominion War, but, you know, that was before my time." Kaya was fishing.

[Damian - Main engineering > Turbolift - Early Morning]
Seemed like the meeting was over, and such was breakfast. Two coffees in, the sandwiches looked more than tempting as he watched the engineers flock away to deal with the cleaning bots. Damian had lingered behind, waiting for the next set of instructions to grab their tool kits and anything else that they needed. As such, downed the rest of his coffee, leaving it on the table with the rest of the used mugs and trading it for half a sandwich before heading out to grab everything he needed.
The change over from breakfast to work was smooth and second-nature; except that he wasn't headed to the armoury to repair broken phasers but to the turbolift which would see to his first engineering assignment on the station. Least there was no shortage of work to be complaining of a lack thereof. He could see the others gathering up ahead at the turbolift, stopping short to nod at their commanding officer.
He listened to what Som had to say, nodding at the vague recognition of the USS Centaur, a ship he had heard by name at the very least.
His brows narrowed briefly in questioning, ascertaining whether she was implying that he was old or simply out to gain something. "Not quite, ma'am. New to the role, not new to Starfleet," He weighed up exactly how much he should say at this point in time. How much Som would know compared to someone with the levels to access his files, had she seen it already? His eyes flickered over to Som momentarily. "Served on the Tortuga before this posting. Before Som's time."

[MCPO Ozu Saya - Main Engineering --> Turbolift]
Saya carried off the rest of her sandwich, eating it in quick bites as she ducked into her office to grab her tool bag and a couple of PADDs. She'd certainly help with the repairs, but there were also a couple of things she had to look over if she had a moment.
She slung the kit over her head, settling the strap across her chest and bag at her hip, as she hurried to the turbolift to meet the others. Now that she was getting to work, Saya felt a little more herself. Usually, when she was working this early, she rose before Kyo and Evekh, got ready quietly, and left without waking either of them. Today, Evekh had woken for some reason. Saya had tried to get him to lie back down quietly, without also waking her mate, but the toddler was too excited to see mama and wanted to cling to her. Saya finally compromised and woke Kyo just enough for him to take the three-year-old into bed with him and cuddle. Evekh relinquished his hold on his mother, finally, for the excitement of getting to sleep for awhile longer in mama and daddy's bed, something they allowed only very rarely.
Saya stepped into the lift and turned to face the front. She listened quietly as Kaya and Oerstadt answered Judy's question. Oerstadt's reticence was not surprising, nor was Kaya's more open demeanor. She hadn't had much chance to get to know these two yet, but now was an excellent opportunity.
Commander Eastman and I served together on the Whirlaway during the war. Met there actually, she said with a small smile at Judy. They had had a bit of a rough beginning - Saya had been too serious, and Judy had made her feel when she didn't want to. Somehow, they'd become close friends.
Serving aboard a space station is quite different from a ship, isn't it? she asked the two new crewmen.

Judy slowly put away her readers, tucking them into her bag, as she listened. It wasn't surprising that Crewman Oerstadt had some experience under his belt, given that he looked to be in his 40s - one of the few members of this crew that were older than all of Judy's kids.
"We did," she confirmed her wartime service. "It was my first command posting."
At last, the lift arrived, and all while waiting for the crewmen to answer Saya's question, Judy motioned for them to head off the lift first.

They exited the lift into the corridor and Kaya fell into an easy pace.
"A bit different, yeah," Kaya answered Chief Ozu. She shifted her hands from behind her to cross her arms over her chest. She scratched behind her ear. How did you tell your boss and her boss that the station was an absolute bucket?
"It presents many opportunities," she said with a stretched smile. Meanwhile she made a note of the 'Tortuga'.

[Damian - Promenade - Early Morning]Damian nodded, a small sign of respect for anyone who had made it through the Dominion War. "Must have been quite the challenge." He replied, not wanting to seem not forthcoming with the commander before turning to the Master chief as they exited the lift. "Especially with this one being in the state that it is. But it's more work for us." Silver-linings, perhaps?
