Personal History
Early Life/Pre-Starfleet Career:
It seemed that life was going to be fairly mundane and normal for the only child of James and Margaret Sosa. Her father was a civilian freighter captain, and owned the ship, the Spanish Rose, that he flew, and that served as part-time home for his small family. It wasn't much, but it was what Rio knew, and her mother, an astronomer and navigator, taught her lessons when they were on the ship. At their home in Mexico, Rio went to 'regular' school and loved being outside and exploring the canyons and mesas in the area. Even at a young age, she was energetic and curious, although she tended to be stubborn when it came to learning subjects such as math, history and language.
But when she was seven, their ship was attacked by pirates, the crew, including her parents, killed, and the cargo taken. Before she ship was scuttled, the pirates had the kindness to take Rio with them, putting her off near her home a few days later.
Now an orphan, Rio fell into the foster system and quickly she became rebellious and difficult, confused about the changes in her life, not finding the attention or companionship she had had, and fighting the constraints of rules and discipline imposed by strangers, no matter how fair those were. She got by in school, but was often in trouble for 'acting out', fighting or ditching classes, pushing limits just to get a reaction or be noticed. Some stability returned to her life at eleven when she was fostered by an elderly couple who took her in hand and seemed to instinctually knew how to temper the girl's energy and anger. Rio settled down and was doing better in school, started playing guitar and got involved in track-and-field.
Life went out of control again a few years later when her foster father got cancer and they had to give Rio up. This time, she rebelled more than ever, running away and dropping out of school at fifteen. Soon after, she fell in with other kids living on the streets and got involved with alcohol and drugs. Life devolved to sleeping in allies and abandoned buildings, and petty crime. It wasn't until she was eighteen that fate finally knocked her upside the head and set her back on track again...
While robbing a residence with her boyfriend and another man, they accidentally set a fire, and as they were fleeing, realized that the place wasn't empty...there were people inside. At first, Rio ran away with the others, but after only a few paces she turned back to warn the family, to help get them out, and she ended up being arrested. Fortunately, the judge rewarded her good turn on the condition she sober up, get her GED and stay out of trouble. And she did just that, following up her GED by joining Starfleet, going into, of all things, Security!

Personality
Rio has always been one to push the limits, willing to try anything once and wanting to do for herself. She is nearly fearless, although as she's gotten older she has become more sensible. She is fiercely independent, and is strong-willed, and outgoing. She has a wry sense of humor and likes to make people laugh when she can. Not one to back down from a fight, she will stick up for herself and the underdog, and make sure that bullies leave her alone. Besides, why pass on a good fight?
Things weren't always that way with her. For a time she was influenced by drugs and alcohol, lost in a dark place where she was reckless and promiscuous, angry, bitter and self-destructive...but fate intervened as she and her 'friends' were involved in a robbery that resulted in a fire...she did the 'right' thing and went back to help, and that, and leniency by a good judge finally set her on the right track, and she is striving to stay there.
She has made a goal of trying to help out where she can, although she has no patience for stupid people or people who won't at least try to help themselves. Still, she does have a problem with authority, especially incompetent jerks who have no business being in charge of anything, and she isn't a wallflower about challenging them, something that tends to keep her on the edge of discipline more often than not. She can be kind and patient with people, even when they are wallowing in self-pity or are cranky and mean. Of course, she may be thinking differently than she is projecting, but she can maintain the front of caring.
Despite the positive facade she tries to keep up, there are times that she feels lonely and lost, when she wants to just be settled somewhere, to be secure and safe, and to have 'home'. On occasion she can get into a funk, becoming quiet and reflective, but she always manages to pull herself out. She does have a temper, and although she keeps it in check, there are times she just has to let loose and go nuts, shouting and breaking things.

"There's what where?" Rio looked at the over-excited crewman with a frown. While she didn't have as much experience as other Security personnel with her limited time, she knew that people were prone to over-exaggerating. Oh, it wasn't necessarily on purpose, it was just that when something out of the ordinary interrupted their hum-drum routine it caused excitement on an undue level, in hopes that there really was something special going on.
"It's a real live Chowchillian Jumping Chinchilla." The kid's eyes were wide, his expression earnest, even as he spouted out his declaration that a mythical beast of fantasy was running amok in the station's civilian lounge, and it was all Rio could do not to laugh...after all, she was on duty and obligated to be 'professional'.
"Uh huh...well, show me, all right?" Well, wasn't every day you got to hunt down a chinchilla from Chowchilla, much the less a jumping one, right? And this far beat the regular quibbles that Security usually had to deal with. "Tell me," she asked as they headed to ground zero, "when did this thing show up? Does anyone know where it came from?"
Her questions elicited far more than she'd expected as the crewman explained the situation in a rapid-fire tumble of words that sometimes ran together, but gave her the gist of the situation. An hour or so ago there had been a ruckus in the kitchen, some dishes falling, although no one had seen the cause, and then, several minutes later some of the patrons thought that they heard something in the ceiling, but again, nothing was detected. The place had settled down, until, quite suddenly, a grey, fuzzy creature had fallen though said ceiling and landed smack in the middle of a dabo game, scattering pieces and players. Startled by the noise, the panicked creature started running circles, looking for a way out and making the other creatures in the lounge panic, until it had wrapped itself firmly around the neck of a navigation officer...
...where it still was when Rio pushed through the agitated crowd outside the lounge and stepped into the room that was no only occupied by the terrified man and agitated beast.
"Oh, thank god, do something!" the officer croaked, not daring to move.
Funny how, most times Security was shunned, looked at as enforcers, avoided,[/i] Rio mused to herself, but when it came to something like this, Security was a man's best friend!
"Looks pretty tame to me," she commented as she got closer, studying the creature, amazed that the myth wasn't myth after all! "Kind of soft, too." She reached up to touch it, but it hissed at her, showing long sharp teeth and glaring with beady black eyes.
"Or not!" Quickly, she withdrew her hand, pondering options. "I'll need you to stay real still," she told the man with a grin, as if he was inclined to move and further rile his neck-wear! Then she contacted the transporter room. =^=I'm going to need an immediate transport on my mark to a containment field,=^=
Then she focused on the LT again. "I sure hope this works." There was uncertainty and concern in her tone -- no sense wasting a good opportunity to torment an officer! "Ready?" In one swift motion, she smacked a transporter badge on the chinchilla, then tapped her own comm badge. =^=Mark!=^=
And the thing fizzled away...
