Personal History
Early Life/Pre-Starfleet Career:
Born not on Orion, but on the pirate flagship Daredevil, Sovaan was the younger of two sons to the Pirate ‘King’ Saavo, a ruthless Orion who travelled with a fleet of his own, stalking the lanes of space for easy prey, or even trade with those who could fight back effectively. Sovaan and his brother Saraahd were mostly kept to and raised by their mother, Marla. To most, she appeared a loyal and caring woman, but her sons saw a different side to her.
Marla was cruel and manipulative to her children, demanding they do tasks that were menial, impossible or tedious in return for things such as small showing of affection or rations for that night. She was not hesitant to use the pheromones that females had to manipulate the emotions of her sons in order to control them, hoping that through them, she could more easily control Saavo’s fleet, once the supposed King met his end.
Sovaan tried to look to his brother for guidance, hoping that the larger boy would keep him protected, and at first the machinations of their mother forced the boys together into a relationship perhaps more caring than that of most Orion siblings. Marla did not take kindly to it, and at first, she attempted to separate the two. Then, when that did not work, she used her pheromones to manipulate the larger Saraahd into bullying his brother and tormenting him, destroying the trust and relationship they once had.
Sovaan’s mother took her opportunity during an attack on a trading vessel. Though Sovaan was considered too young at the age of thirteen to join them in boarding, Saraahd was taken. Through manipulation or some other means, a crewman of the vessel was induced to shoot Saavo in the eye with a phaser. Though the Pirate King was dead, the trading vessel’s crew were wiped out in retaliation, and Saraahd was expected to command his fleet. The torment on Sovaan only intensified from there as did Marla’s control of her eldest son.
With the leader they had chosen to follow now dead, who was admired as being honourable and strong by his followers, they began to plot and scheme. It did not take long for half of the fleet to break off as a number of Federation ships came out of warp in the middle of an attack on other innocent vessels. What was left of the fleet was decimated, and the boy pirate king surrendered. When the Daredevil was searched, Sovaan was found in the brig, locked in there for daring to not act to Saraahd’s whims.
Sovaan was taken in by the Federation as his only living parent was being charged, and was eventually rehomed; the young teenager was given to a family in Austria, the Konigs, who had cared for foster children before. Though it took time, Sovaan came out of his shell, and began to show his abilities once living with the Konigs. He was a fiercely intelligent boy with an endless curiosity, though he always came across detached, and stoic.
The young Orion held a strong aversion to ever being controlled or manipulated again, and sought to strengthen his mind, not just with knowledge, but discipline. He craved a more regimented and structured life to guide him, an oddity amongst his people. Having heard about Maximillian’s time in Starfleet, Orion made it his goal to become a Starfleet Officer and choose to do things for others of his own free will, rather than be forced to as he once was.
Sovaan studied long and hard for his chance to enter the Academy, though his unique situation had placed him slightly behind other children his age. Despite this, he worked twice as hard compared to most, and was able to put in his first application at the age of 18. Though he did not actually gain entry to the Academy on his first attempt, he doggedly tried again the next year.
Academy/Technical Academy (if Starfleet):
Eventually, Sovaan was able to take the entrance exams into the Academy, eventually confronting the infamous ‘psych test’. Faced with his greatest fear, Sovaan was confronted once again with the torment of his older brother and the machinations of his mother. Now a man on his own, Sovaan did his best to fight through the fear and stand up to them both, acting against them to protect others. Having passed and gained entrance, Sovaan was now training to be part of Starfleet properly.
Though he was a bright student and an eager learner, and was commended for his excellent conduct while at the Academy, Sovaan’s fear of once again being manipulated made it difficult for him to make friends. He was socially isolated for his beginning years there, and seemed to be coping despite that. It was only once he had reached his third year alongside some of his classmates that he began to open up to them, not only about himself but his interests. Eventually, a select few were even told of what his situation had been as a child.
The discipline that Sovaan sought was in droves, but his desire for mental control and calm pushed him to take part in many sports and martial arts. He trained in Boxing, Judo and more intense arts such as Anbo-jyutsu. He even joined the Academy’s wrestling team, becoming one of their better performers thanks to his constant training, large build and physical strength.
With his attention to detail and an inventiveness that came from pushing his creativity and flair into his duty, rather than the pleasure many of his people focused on, his reactions and ability to come up with creative solutions flourished. Sovaan felt genuine calm, and at the same time a rush at the controls of a starship.
Though he was also taught other valuable skills such as Diplomacy, Marksmanship and first-aid, as cadets were, Sovaan chose to focus on the operation and piloting of a shuttle and starship. He became one of the more talented and stand-out cadets on the flight range, proving himself many times over.
Eventually, Sovaan finished his time at the academy, graduating with distinction in the majors of Astrophysics and Engineering, becoming a full Ensign upon his leaving. He was assigned to the USS Astute, an Excelsior-Class, acting as one of the Flight Control officers.
Previous Assignments (if applicable):
Sovaan’s time on the Astute seemed at first like it would be peaceful, until the sudden start of the Dominion War in 2373. With the Federation being forced out of the Bajoran System and being pushed back by superior forces, morale was low amongst many of the officers. The Astute was assigned to the Seventh Fleet and sent to the Tyra System, to ward off a Dominion offensive.
The Battle of Tyra was a disaster for the Federation; 112 ships entered the battle from the Seventh fleet, and only 14 would leave. The Astute was one of them - though many would consider themselves lucky, the experience shook Sovaan to his core like he hadn’t felt since his childhood. The Astute lost much of its crew complement, including the Captain and many of the division heads. Sovaan focused on saving fellow crew members and aiding with the repairs of vital systems.
Soon, the Astute was assigned to defend the Setlik system, which was in a precarious position and had already suffered greatly during the earlier conflict with the Cardassians. Dominion forces would soon prove that it was a wise move, as yet another attack force moved in to attack the Astute and other ships defending the system. The battle was once again bloody, especially as the Dominion sent Jem’Hadar boarders once they began suffering too many losses, hoping to overpower the crew of the Federation ships.
Being struck critically and left without shields, the Astute was boarded, allowing the Dominion’s ships to focus elsewhere. Sovaan and other Flight Control officers and crewmen were caught unaware by their attackers, with many unable to fight back against them. Sovaan, being more physically adept and well-trained in hand to hand than some of his comrades, was able to defeat an elder Jem’Hadar in single combat to retrieve a weapon, allowing him and others to fend off their attackers with lethal force, the vat-bred soldiers proving incredibly tough.
For his actions in the Battle of Setlik, Sovaan was promoted to Lieutenant Junior Grade in the field and was entrusted with more responsibility. The war raged on, and he continued to serve as dutifully as he could. The Astute would not take part in other major conflicts until the Battle of Cardassia, where it joined in striking the Dominion at its weakest. The battle was as bloody as all the others he’d experienced, and Sovaan was able to breathe a sigh of relief when the war finally ended.
Over the next five years, things were quiet. Sovaan’s promotion was upheld and he was eventually made a full Lieutenant. After a quiet few years of patrols, the Astute was brought in for repairs, and during that time, Sovaan was told by command to pack his bags; that he was being reassigned.

Personality
Sovaan is an incredibly ordered and structured person, who tends to look at everything in a segmented way. He is fully dedicated to the ideals of the Federation, tending to idolize them and give the Federation perhaps more credit than it’s due, at times. Having been rescued from a far worse life, he views the Federation as the best alternative any sentient being could have to their own civilisation.
He is protective and caring towards his crewmates, viewing them as people that he is entirely responsible for the safety of, as much as they are for his. Sovaan tries not to push his ideals onto others or expect from them what he expects of himself - he does not see himself as in a high enough position or experienced enough to judge others.
Though Sovaan’s humility, quiet demeanour and structured lifestyle seem to lend themselves more towards a soldier than a Starfleet Officer, perhaps being influenced by the early days of his career, it is his empathy and respect for all beings that has gotten him this far.
Despite Sovaan seeming as though he only lives for his job at times, being at the controls of a ship shows what is beneath his exterior, as do his drawings. He shows a creative and inventive mind, taking opportunities and daring movements where many would not have the nerve and showing an artistic flair that could almost seem out of character, if one only knew him from his duty.

Long-term Goals: Sovaan believes he can contribute much to the Federation as a whole, and wants to find some way to help it improve, and perhaps find a purpose for himself that affects it in a large way.
Defining Characteristic: Sovaan is highly protective of his crewmates, and is unwilling to put them into danger if he can take their place.
Sense of Humor: Though he remains composed on duty and often seems humourless, Sovaan actually enjoys slapstick a great deal.

[Sovaan - Shuttle Bay, Deck 10]
The fist struck him hard in the nose, and Sovaan stumbled back, his body slamming against a parked shuttle as he felt blood dribble from where he’d been struck. The creature in front of him, the Jem’Hadar, continued to advance. The Ensign wiped off his face as the sound of fighting and chaos surrounded him. He had to think, and fast. He swung at the invader, who simply brought an arm up to block the attack and grabbed him by the scruff of his uniform with the other hand, lifting him despite his own prodigious size.
The Jem’Hadar tossed Sovaan to the side and sent him sprawling across the shiny floor, causing the Orion to slide slightly before coming to a stop. Disoriented, he saw a fellow Ensign nearby; he was slumped against the wall, having clearly been killed in the fighting already. Ensign Williams. He had gotten here only recently, this defense of Setlik being his first operation. It ended like this? This quickly? Sovaan felt something bubbling up inside him as he saw a friend, a comrade that he’d failed. That he had failed to protect, letting him down the same way Sovaan himself had been.
Sovaan sprung to his feet as quickly as he could while the attacker pursued, thankfully still without his close quarters weapon. He swung and Sovaan swayed his head, dodging the blow. He remembered his Anbo-Jyutsu classes, the sparring sessions with O’Malley. He followed a typical sequence, but tried to use the natural speed of his familiarity with boxing; he punched low, aiming at the sides and abdomen as he bobbed and weaved. He moved unusually fast for his size and build, trying to maneuver himself into position. He had to be as close to the phasers as possible.
He took another strike across the face from his opponent, stunning and stumbling him once more. Sovaan knew he wasn’t going to be able to stand much more of that; his opponent was physically superior in many ways, though perhaps using his strength against him was the best chance he had. Sovaan waited for the attacker to strike at him again, once more swaying his head before gripping onto parts of the alien’s uniform. He turned and used the momentum of his opponent’s attack, flipping the Jem’Hadar over himself and landing him hard on his back.
The Ensign quickly moved up to a press a knee onto the Jem’Hadar’s chest, throwing punches down into his face. His knuckles repeatedly impacted onto the alien’s features time after time, until he was finally sure it wouldn’t move. Even as he fell back and scrambled back across the floor, struggling to his feet, there was still the noise of fighting and savagery; of vicious Dominion invaders trying to murder his crewmates.
Sovaan reached the locker full of phasers first, perhaps the only one so far to have subdued his attacker. He didn’t hesitate to immediately draw one as soon as he could, turning and firing a lethal blast towards another Jem’Hadar that was trying to approach him and knocking it to the floor. Usually, he would have stunned; but these soldiers were far too much for something like that.
Soon, he was firing off more phaser blasts, carefully aiming at the ones he knew to be hostile, and with his crewmates not held down by being attacked, more were able to join him in retrieving weapons. Soon, the shuttle bay had begun to clear out the Jem’Hadar that were mostly equipped with close combat weapons, knocking them down and subduing them if not permanently with the lethal blast. Sovaan glanced down at the one he had beaten - he looked almost wizened in comparison, with more horns and a more pronounced face. This one was older; the Ensign knew that today, he was just lucky. He would have to try and remember that.
Do you have previous experience with a role-play forum?
Yes indeed - I’ve roleplayed on many forums throughout the years, including Shadowfleet and other, different sci-fi settings.
What brought you to the Frontier?
Jeb! Told me about everything being set up and it sounded really cool, so I was automatically on board!
Is there anything else you’d like to tell us?
Not at the moment, I’ll call you back sometime.
