Personal History
Early Life/Pre-Starfleet Career: Ardon Gratt was born on a medical starbase orbiting Bolarus in 2335. His mother was a noted xenopsychologist whose career took the family to many different worlds when Gratt was a child, including a spell on Earth in his teens when she lectured at Heidelberg University in Germany. Gratt's father was a musician who played the Bolian drone organ. Gratt's travels made him feel very much a citizen of the galaxy, and helped him blend comfortably among many different cultures and species. Initially he followed in his mother's footsteps, entering academia to study the psychological quirks of different alien species. He graduated with distinction from the university of Singapore on Earth, and earned the equivalent of a doctorate at the Zarot Falls Academy on Bolarus. Finding academic life stifling and unfulfilling, he belatedly changed tack and joined Starfleet when the call went out for new recruits of all ages at the beginning of the Dominion War in 2373. He was 38.
Academy/Technical Academy (if Starfleet): Due to the pressures of the war and in recognition of his existing qualifications, Gratt was fast-tracked through the academy as a medical/psychological specialist, completing his studies in just under 4 years. During this time he survived the Breen attack on San Francisco, seeing many of his classmates killed. By the time he graduated in 2377 the war was over, but trained counsellors were needed more than ever as Starfleet struggled to cope with the trauma that the conflict had inflicted on its personnel and their families. Gratt himself considered this “phase 2” of the war.
Previous Assignments (if applicable): Fresh from the Academy, Ensign Gratt was assigned to relief operations on Cardassia Prime where he counselled Starfleet personnel who struggled to cope with the difficult situations they encountered on that troubled planet. After a year's rotation, he was then assigned to the USS Samarkand (a Nebula Class vessel) as a junior counselor, and after two years there he was despatched to Front Ear Station.

Please write a brief answer to 3 of the following (a sentence or two for each is fine):
Your character's most painful experience
The attack on Starfleet Academy by the Breen. Gratt was a student in class at the time, and narrowly escaped the attack with his life. He was then part of an emergency triage team and saw several of his friends die in front of him.
Your character's best or favorite experience
Being the only non-human in his graduating class at Singapore, on a course that specialised in human psychology. The feeling that he had truly immersed himself in an alien culture was very rewarding.
Your character's most crucial experience
When he was rejected for a teaching position on Bolarus because of an academic dispute involving his mother. Gratt realised that the culture of academia was never going to accept him as his mother's reputation preceded him everywhere and intimations of nepotism shadowed him. He ultimately joined Starfleet instead.
Please write a brief sample post from your character’s perspective:
The negotiation was going badly. The Nausicaans refused to withdraw unless their honour was satisfied, and the human traders had no interest in bowing to Nausicaan belligerence. Gratt wanted to avoid violence at all costs but it seemed like an impossible proposition.
He turned to the human captain. “It seems to me that this is just a problem of communication. Our Nausicaan friends here have a very specific social code, and some insults are acceptable while others very much are not. It's tricky for outsiders, I agree.”
He then turned to the Nausicaans. “Humans do not understand how they cause offence. They didn't take your comments in the correct spirit. Foolish, no doubt. But if you both make each other angry then you're both being foolish, no?” An idea having occurred to Gratt, he puffed up a bit and adopted a more pompous tone. “You could both learn a lot from the Bolians. Our wisdom and good sense mean that we have no enemies.”
He could sense the human captain bristling behind him, about to interject. The Nausicaans refocused on Gratt as well. This is working, Gratt thought. If they both turn their anger on me they might just forget their dispute with one another. I just hope this Starfleet uniform can protect me from their ire...
