Personal History
Early Life/Pre-Starfleet Career: Shavan was born to an Orion mother and Andorian father who were both interstellar merchants, and secretly, smugglers and operatives in the Orion Syndicate. They met through their work, and when Shavan was born they owned a smuggling ship together, which brought in a fair bit of wealth. Shavan learned the tricks of the trade very young. His parents were sometimes harsh, but did everything they could to prepare him for the kind of life they led. Naturally they travelled a lot, and as a child Shavan spent a lot of time on his parents ship as well as staying behind on the Orion homeworld when they went on more dangerous missions.
He loved seeing different worlds when they were able to, and took naturally to work aboard the small starship, including learning to navigate. However, as he got older he spent more and more time in the Orion system away from his parents ship. As a teenager Shavan was trained for and started working for the Syndicate on his own, wanting to prove his worth independent of his family. For years he worked on various pirate and smuggling operations, with the goal of rising up the ranks and becoming a full member of the Syndicate. Despite being young, even then Shavan had a way with navigation and technology in general that made him useful, and sharp instincts and a way with a phaser that kept him alive.
But that same ambition eventually led him to also want more in life than to be a petty criminal or slave to the Syndicate forever. He applied himself in school and attended university at the Orion Institute of Cosmology. Being a child of two worlds, he had always been drawn to the stars, and it was there that he got a more formal education in stellar cartography, navigational sciences and cosmology. It was also there that he met Marok, a Romulan student who became his best friend, and eventually more.
After graduating, he started looking for a legitimate job outside the Orion system. A professor from the Institute who was a retired Starfleet commander suggested Starfleet and offered to make the necessary recommendation. While at first it seemed unlikely, Shavan thought, why not, this could be the opportunity he was looking for to finally get away. He applied for a direct commission as a science officer and was accepted.
Academy/Technical Academy (if Starfleet): Since he had already received an equivalent education on his homeworld Shavan did not attend Starfleet Academy, though he did participate in a brief training. After completing it he received his first Starfleet assignment, to the Front Ear station.
