Personal History
Early Life/Pre-Starfleet Career:
Joshua was born the second of three children in a family with a long history of going into public service and local politics. From a young age, that was what he had been conditioned to do, and had been thoroughly expected to, like his parents, attend Queens University in their native Kingston, obtain a Bachelor's Degree in something pertaining to politics or the civil service, then his Master's and find work in that field.
However, that path never truly appealed to him. His older sister managed to skate away from the expectations of becoming a bureaucrat by studying nursing, which was deemed a suitable form of public service, and his younger brother had political aspirations, which satisfied his parents to no end. Joshua, on the other hand, had no such desires. In fact, through his schooling, he found himself to be aimless, with little interest in the civics class he was told he had to enjoy and excel at, but instead finding greater aptitude in physics and mathematics, to the despair of his parents.
When the Dominion War happened and the illusion of Earth being entirely safe was shattered, and the reports of the selfless service of Starfleet personnel, that was when he decided what the course of his life would do. His parents were less than supportive in the matter, so he undertook the testing in secret from them, and it was not until he received his acceptance letter that it dawned on them that he was, indeed, serious and they would not be stopping him, although they neither approved of nor truly accepted his decision.
Academy/Technical Academy (if Starfleet):
Starfleet Academy, Earth
Over the course of his training in the Security and Tactical branch, it was noted that while he barely reached passing marks in the physical security aspect, he achieved excellent scores with regards to the operation of shipboard tactical systems. This led to a rather lopsided distribution of his marks, putting his average score around the 60th percentile of his class and not achieving any particular academic distinction.
Also, while undergoing live flight training, a catastrophic malfunction due to undetected metal fatigue caused a power conduit in his shuttle to erupt, compromising the hull and sending his shuttle into an uncontrolled spin and he was beamed to safety just as he observed the bulkhead fully shearing away in front of his eyes. Between the explosion and the plasma fire that followed, the damage to his left arm was such that it had to be amputated, and was subsequently replaced with a prosthetic.
Previous Assignments (if applicable):
First assignment after being commissioned, some practical training on board the USS Fawkes while in transit from Earth to the Front Ear station.

Please write a brief answer to 3 of the following (a sentence or two for each is fine):
Your character's most painful experience
Losing his arm in a flight training accident; between the phantom pain and the memories of the event, that's one he's not letting to anytime soon.
Your character's best or favorite experience
Being formally commissioned as an Ensign. Not having seen his parents face to face since he had joined Starfleet and gone to the Academy, only haveing traded messages with them, and the majority of them having been written rather than recorded, with next to know live communications, he was overjoyed to see them at his graduation ceremony.
Your character's most crucial experience
Standing up for himself to his parents. Even after he had applied to Starfleet and passed all the entrance exams, his decision to join Starfleet had not been truly real to him until he received his acceptance letter and told them, point-blank, that he would not be going to Queens, nor enter public service.
Who is your character's role model and why?
His sister. She was the first one he had ever heard of within the Niles family who had decided to actually go against the family tradition of becoming a bureaucrat or politician, and the example he followed when he decided Starfleet was going to be his path.
Please write a brief sample post from your character’s perspective:
Front Ear Station and the USS Mac. Just graduated from the Academy, Ensign Joshua Niles was looking forward this particular assignment. On the very frontier of the Federation, where few had gone before. Places full of new phenomena and people, so much to learn. And dangers unlike anything else deeper within Federation space.
At least, that was what he would be facing... in three months' time when the USS Fawkes and its cargo of runabouts for the Front Ear starbase and a draft of colonists would get there. And the Fawkes was not even one of the nice, big and shiny newer ships. She was an aging Ambassador-class ship, no longer quite fit enough for front-line duty and stripped down to a minimum crew, but perfectly fine for this sort of workhorse task. But at least, she could make the transit faster than, say, a dedicated freighter, which was at least saying something.
A more experienced veteran would have appreciated the downtime before him, but for an enterprising young Ensign? The notion of twiddling his thumbs for so long did not appeal to him whatsoever. And, it was while he was laying on his bed that his commbadge chirped. "Ensign Niles, this is Commander Severin. Please meet me in my office. Out."
Annika Severin, the ship's executive officer, wanted to speak to him? Well, it would hardly do to leave her waiting. And while her tone had been polite enough, the terse nature of the message left no doubt that this was indeed not a request. Or at least, not one that he could refuse and get away with. However, he had to wonder, what had he done? He had embarked properly, displayed his orders when requested, had made his way to his assigned quarters, and not done any trouble in the fifteen hours since he'd come aboard. What could this be about?
Making his way to the XO's office, he announced himself via the door chime, and he was quickly welcomed in.
"Mister Niles", started the woman across the desk from him. "I'm given to understand you will be at loose ends for the next several weeks, and it would seem that the Fawkes has lost many of her officers to crew new construction when we entered Earth orbit. I understand you have your orders to report to the USS Mac, and I have no intention of interfering with those, but I will be making use of your services for the time being. Effective immediately, I am adding you to the bridge watch rotation as Tactical Officer. Note, you are going to always be on watch with myself or another senior officer, and given this is meant to be a nice, leisurely crossing, we intend to see you start you on your Bridge Officer's qualification, and at least get you fully certified for bridge duty. Do you have any questions?"
Standing there, Joshua's mouth fell open. He would be put to work? Well, that certainly would be making the crossing bearable. But to get certified at least as a bridge watchstander even before getting to his assigned duty station? That was an opportunity he couldn't afford to pass, not as a mere Ensign. "No ma'am," replied he quickly.
"Excellent. Your first watch is in four hours; normally I would say get some sleep, but instead I expect you to familiarize yourself with this ship's tactical console and systems before you report for duty. Dismissed."
