Personal History
Early Life/Pre-Starfleet Career: Born to Starfleet Parents, they groomed him for a career in Starfleet, which seemed less and less likely as he developed into a child with lazy tendencies as puberty came upon him. He grew dissatisfied with life and was unclear why. Expected to apply to Starfleet at 16, he instead joined a Ferengi merchant to serve as an engineer, things he learned from his grooming for Starfleet, in exchange for Room & Board.
He spent the next 2 years in sparse contact with his parents, and working as little as was really needed in order to keep the ship running. His laziness allowed for long naps in the engine room, moving to silence alarms as they rang, fix the problem almost absently, and then to return. Over time, he did find himself needing something to occupy his time, and began to actually learn the skills, rather than just let his natural talent suffice. He also became enamored with Transporter technology, grinning at the express laziness a transporter involved.
After he grew to his now relatively impressive size, the Ferengi haggled for him to be a bodyguard, if only for show, of course for minimal pay. An almost 7’ tall clawed Caitian towering over the short 5’ Ferengi’s brought many entertaining situations for K’Dex, as he performed even that job as lazily as possible, quickly silencing any thoughts that he might not be a bodyguard by silently and swiftly taking one leap forward, causing an almost jump scare in those who might question it. Then he’d return to his usually customary task of cleaning and pruning himself.
After a particularly disastrous encounter during a ‘salvage’ operation, the ship was extremely damaged, requiring a couple weeks of repair in space dock. Deciding to utilize his pay to see multiple doctors, since he had the time and no immediate job, he was diagnosed with depression. With a recurring medication assigned, he began to become more motivated, though he continued to struggle with the malady. But, with his newfound feelings, and realizing the dangerous situation he really was in, he returned home, applied to Starfleet for a commission, and began a new journey, while connecting again to his family, spread out on assignments across Starfleet.
Academy/Technical Academy (if Starfleet): K’Dex took his new attitude and working knowledge to accept a commission for Engineering. He spent most of his time learning how to be better, and still work past his lazy tendencies from his past. He obtained a more proper adjustment to his medication and worked on understanding his new mindset, adopting a more stoic nature. The instructors had multiple surprises at realizing the fact that K’Dex had enough of a mindset to turn his laziness into working shortcuts in quick situations, though they didn’t necessarily meet protocols. His final academy years being during the Dominion War, he was put on certain short-term cadet assignments as a damage controller, utilizing his skills in a position that required him to be active.

An answer. Finally, an answer. A simple, simple answer. He wasn’t just uniquely, irrevocably broken. A shudder went through his large body, as he realized… he had emotions overwhelming him. He’d never really FELT that strongly, let alone really cried. When things went wrong, it was just wrong, nothing he could do about it. But now, he… he felt the droplets run down his cheek, stopping at his whiskers. Could he be better? Really?
