[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's office, Deck 2, Front Ear Station]Some parts of Judy's work were dull. Reports, requisitions, paperwork, schmaperwork, it was all essential, but it was absolutely not interesting. The matter of Ensign Murphy was much more risible. The kid apparently had a pet duck, which had rumbled up multiple Promenade businesses. It was lamentable, but in the confines of her office, Judy permitted herself a chuckle. In the stately room she occupied, she moved from her antique wooden desk to the less commanding ten-seater conference table. She sat down with her back to the bookshelves, and her face towards the framed family photos. She adjusted her knee-length uniform skirt, and her cat-eye bifocals, wanting her appearance to be meticulously proper especially in case her face gave way to a chuckle, before making a summons. =A= "Eastman to Ensign Murphy. We need to talk about the duck. Please come to my office at your convenience," =A= she said simply, in a gentle, quiet manner. This was, despite her own instincts, no laughing matter.

Murphy looked over at his commbadge after he received the message. That wasn’t good. After the last catastrophe with Dennis stealing things like knives, he knew that he was bound to get some kind of notice from the people in charge about that. =/\= “Y-yes, ma’am.” =/\= he responded, trying to sound professional. He had a bit more social grace than a kid getting sent to the principal’s office, but he still felt like one as he walked down to the Commander’s office. Hesitating for a second, he knocked.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's office]Judy heard the knock, a distinct contrast to the chime. If she'd been at her desk, located as it was on the far end of her office, she wouldn't have heard it. "Come on in!" she called out. As the doors opened, she sized up Ensign Murphy. He was a rather skinny fellow, the type that definitely did not eat enough. He looked like a nerd, like a lot of people she knew in High School. Not to mention, he looked like a High Schooler. "Commander Judy Eastman, pleased to meet you," she greeted, rising from her seat. "Could I interest you in some cheese and crackers?"

Hearing the voice to come in, He opened the door. At the invitation of food, he gave a slightly nervous smile as he sat down, slicing a bit of cheddar and placing it on a whole wheat cracker. She looked a bit like his grandmother. Though, his grandmother was a lot older and smelled like iguana. His mind wandered a bit as he remembered that fat ugly iguana, but he refocused back to the moment at hand.

[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) - First Officer's office]Judy was a little perplexed by Ensign Murphy's little etiquette mishap. But then, it wasn't too surprising: he had just been called up to a senior officer's office, and not for a good reason. A little nervousness was to be expected. "You can relax, Ensign," she reassured as she sat back down. "I didn't call you here to wag my finger at you."Judy crossed her legs at the knee, right over left, and then sliced herself some gruyère. "A duck is a pretty unusual pet," she observed.

He sat down, trying to relax. That cheese did look good. Very fancy. He picked a slice and some grapes from the charcuterie board She might not be wagging her finger at him, but he was still very intimidated by authority figures. “Yes Ma’am.” he said. “Not many people have ducks. Especially in space. But Dennis is a good duck.” he said, relaxing a bit as he talked about his mallard.

Over a wedge of camembert, Judy processed this idea. "It's definitely not common," she agreed. "Nothing wrong with that. Life would be pretty boring without some variety."
Judy clasped her hands together and set them in her lap.
"But, unfortunately, even good pets - good kids, for that matter - act up sometimes, don't they? Heck, my grandkids do," she very gently broached the topic of the day.

{Judy's office}
“Yeah.” Murphy squirmed just a little, remembering the chaos on the promenade. That was a crazy day. Who would have thought a duck could be that fast when it was a fluffy football of feathers? He popped a grape in his mouth. “He wasn’t supposed to get out of my quarters. I think McNamara, my roommate accidentally let him out and he tried to find me.” he fidgeted. “You have grandkids?” he asked, getting sidetracked. He was slightly surprised, but he shouldn't have been. She looked like she could be a grandmother. Probably a nicer one than his grandmother.

When Murphy engaged with the comment about grandkids, Judy was well and truly hooked. Even at her most serious, she was still very much an over-enthusiastic Grandmother.
"Yes, as a matter of fact, I have five of them," she shared. Shen then set her personal PADD down on the table, screen-down, to show its custom back, adorned as it was with a photo of Judy, her husband Max, and the five grandbabies.
"These are Helen, Alyssa, Benjamin, Michael, and Jules," she identified all five, with the obvious pride of a Grandparent.
But, as much as she wanted to dwell on the topic of grandchildren for all eternity, Judy knew she had a job to do.
"In any case, your roommate left the doors open, but the duck covered quite a distance to reach the Main Promenade. How did that happen?"

{Judy's office} He looked at the picture. Five really cute kids, one who was sticking out their tongue. They are definitely adorable, and Judy seemed like a really good grandma, much better than his grandma, who smelled like iguanas. But he had to get back to business. “I’m not sure. He can fly. He doesn’t usually, but that’s how he must have done it.” he said.

Judy shook her head. She wasn't the most rigid on pet regulations, but this wasn't good.
"So he must've flown up the Jeffries Tubes, then," she supposed. "Gosh, if my dogs could pull that off..."
She shook her head at that notion. Oh, Bridge and Tunnel flying would be impossible.
"As you can imagine, my concern right now is how we make sure that doesn't happen again. Have you given thought to that?"
They did have to address the issue. So Judy maintained a gentle air about her, benevolent and gracious, rather than admonishing and angry. She couldn't be angry, amused by it as she was.
