Some time ago, I estimated the exchange rates between the Credit, the 2020 US Dollar, and the various denominations of Gold-Pressed Latinum, based on the very limited set of prices given in canon, and the so-so assumption that things like a drink at a bar will cost roughly the same. It's very inexact, but I hope it can be a useful reference to us all in figuring out - roughly - what kinds of currency values mean what.
| GPL (Bars) | GPL (Strips) | GPL (Slips) | Federation Credits | US Dollars | GPL (Bars) | 1 | 20 | 2000 | 600.00 | $400.00 | GPL (Strips) | 0.05 | 1 | 100 | 30.00 | $20.00 | GPL (Slips) | 0.0005 | 0.01 | 1 | 0.30 | $0.20 | Federation Credits | 0.00167 | 0.0333 | 3.33 | 1.00 | $0.67 | US Dollars | 0.0025 | 0.05 | 5 | 1.50 | $1.00 |
Based on this, we can then project to what various values of 24th-century currencies refer. However, we must consider one very major caveat, namely that the Federation economy works rather differently from our present economy. For the purposes of this table, I will not go into how it works, which is a serious unresolved question, and just say that it is different, and therefore the table should not be taken as gospel.
