[LCDR Matthew Harmon - Sickbay] Harmon ignored them nurses warning to be gentle with her patient and shot her a slight disapproving glare. He was being gentle, the same of which could not be said of Tyler’s grip on Charlie from the looks of things. Fortunately, however, Harmon did manage to get her to let go of Charlie who agreed to stay. Much to Harmon’s relief, Charlie didn’t cause any problems and seemed to be a helpful presence, at least for now. “I know this is hard,” he said softly, “But can you tell me what happened exactly when they can aboard? How did they come aboard? What did they look like? What weapons did they use?” He asked slowly. “You can take your time,” he offered. Tag: Charlie Fox , soft tag Thea Baker [Charlie Fox & Tyler - Sickbay, USS Mac]With each question Tyler's eyes widened and her muscles tensed further. Charlie hadn't thought it was possible for the woman to look any more wound up, but there she was, looking like she was about to leave Beyen after all, and scarper from the interrogation. The woman's eyes found Charlie, and then they slid off her, in search of the nurse. The journalist recognised a cornered interviewee when she saw one. She was overwhelmed, and likely wouldn't remember any of those details until later when her mind allowed her to process everything she'd seen. "Start from when you realised something weird was happening," Charlie suggested, hoping to be helpful and hoping to keep Tyler with them. "Everything else will come, just tell us how you remember it all starting."She swallowed, her brown eyes almost black in her pale face. "The ship shook," she said after a pregnant pause. "But that's normal, this area of space, y'know? Full of eddies and other subspace disturbances." She broke off for a second to look at Charlie and Harmon, as though making sure they were following. "And the Star, she's not a young ship. She's got ghosts." Tyler licked her parched lips, but she continued. "I didn't realise that the ship shaking like that meant they were coming. Like I said, I was in the cargo bay, I didn't know what was going on." She ignored her wet cheeks. "There was an intruder alert, and then... screaming. They were wearing masks. Like something tribal. That's when Beyen told me to run and hide. I didn't even put up a fight, I should have, I should have stayed with him.""Then you'd be on that biobed Tyler, or worse. You did the right thing."Tyler shook her head, unable at that point to consider anything so rational. "I listened. I heard everything as they butchered him."

[Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman, MBE, PhD, JD, MBA, PE, RA - Bridge]Having deciphered more scripture, Doug now sat in the Counselor's chair, a comfortable perch that really wasn't his to take, but which he took nonetheless. Being rather indifferent to consequences had its advantages, as Sir Doug had learned over the centuries. "Quick warning. If these are religious fundamentalists like we think they are, they might be the type to keep fighting even with both arms cut off - metaphorically speaking, that is," Sir Doug pointed out. "Just something to keep in mind."Not all fundies were on the high road to martyrdom, and not all who would fight to the death were of the religious variety, but enough were that Sir Doug thought it worth a warning. [ PO3 Kaya Som | Bridge ]Kaya Som's swiftly delivered report on the Jupiter Star's systems status was thorough enough. It covered each of the craft's primary systems and relative subsystems. The Star's computer core provided its own basic reports which Kaya then supplemented with her findings on how they'd been disabled and their current operating status, including the probable connections to a Talorian hacking cell. After that, the rest of the journey was quietly waiting and thinking about Sir Doug's theory of what the poor crew's organs had been used for. She found herself particularly conscious of her lungs. She counted her breaths. In. Out. In. Out. Main Engineering fed to the bridge terminal its steady stream of logs and status. Here she was, in the middle of the action, though, with no one to talk to. The bridge was no place for wild speculation, which was the best kind of speculation. [ LT (JG) Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]
Part of him was listening to what Sir Doug had to say. What the man was doing on the Bridge was beyond the young Lieutenant, but Niles had bigger things to worry about. So long as the El-Aurian stayed out of the way should things get lively, then he had no reason to have issues with him being there... assuming he had the right clearances and authorizations. But if he could have entered the command deck to begin with and he hadn't been ejected by the Commodore, then, well, it wasn't his place to remove him... yet. But, he did notice what he had to say about the Talorians. Not that he cared much about ancient legends, but that part about religious fundamentalists. Historically, those types indeed had this nasty tendency to fight to the very last. And knowing just what sort of savages they were, that made them extremely dangerous, even if, by all accounts, the Mac was more than a match for their own vessel. But, this being the Talorian home system, it was entirely possible they might have friends around, which could make things interesting. In the 'ancient Chinese curse' meaning of the word. And there was Petty Officer Som, absorbed in the Engineering console, though, to his eyes, not looking the most comfortable on the Bridge. Though, frankly, he couldn't really fault her for that; this was, after all, not quite the most common environment in which one would find non-commissioned engineers. And just then, his console beeped at him and he brought up the alarm that had drawn his attention, and his eyes hardened just as his face became set in a cold, hard mask. There was a ship that matched what they knew about the raider that had attacked the Star. Power readings, warp signature, propulsion emissions... and according to active scans, the shape too. He had her. "Sir, I have a positive ID on the Talorian ship that attacked the Jupiter Star. Bearing 209 mark 002, in orbit near a moon of the seventh planet, range fourteen million kilometers."They were a good ten million or so clicks out of torpedo range, but still close enough to start getting a lock on them... should the order come. "Recommend going to Red Alert and locking weapons before laying an intercept course."

[ Nurse Ramona Spring - Sickbay] Ramona was well aware that Harmon had ignored her warning, judging by his lack of response and decided not to take it personally as she was here to look after the patients and not to stroke the ego of an Intelligence officer. Still she hovered close by, under the pretence of updating the records which she had already initiated, before Charlie managed to calm Tyler a little and encourage her to share the information needed. That was the difference between her's and Harmon's approach, even as Tyler looked in her direction, offering the woman a look of reassurance, whilst standing by with a sedative should it be needed. Although when she did share her story, Ramona was horrified but at the same time admired Charlie for what she had done. Standing up Ramona then approached and looked mainly at Harmon. [LCDR Matthew Harmon - Sickbay] The manner in which Harmon asked his questions was arguably quite lacking in tact, not that he really recognised or cared. Fortunately, Charlie was proving herself useful. Unfortunately, it was as Harmon had feared. Tyler didn’t seem to be in a state where she was able to provide much meaningful information. One small detail, however did stand out. The tribal masks. It seems that perhaps Doug may have been onto something. Ramona then made another appearance demanding he cease questioning for now. Harmon held back his indignation at the prospect that a nurse could dictate how he investigates key leads. Instead he took what was in his mind a moderate, reasonable approach. “One final question, you’ve been quite helpful so far,” he said his tone remaining awkward betraying the fact that he wasn’t used to speak this way. “Can you describe these tribal masks? In as much detail as you can,” he asked, “I believe it could be an important clue in solving who is behind this.” Tag: Charlie Fox, Thea Baker

[Sir Dugris "Doug" Zaman, MBE, PhD, JD, MBA, PE, RA - Bridge]Sir Doug listened to all that was said and that went on around him. Although medicine was one of the few trades he had never practiced (he was a Doctor of many things, but not medicine), it was Dr. Baker's report on the autopsy that intrigued the ancient man the most. "That's an interesting combination," he muttered, as he thought briefly. These organs didn't go together, in the way that the heart and lungs might, or the intestines with each other. "The pieces don't quite fit with each other. The heart circulates blood, while the liver and kidney are both involved in cleansing the body. A focus on purification would explain the liver and kidneys, but not the heart. On top of that, most sentient species have at least two kidneys, but only one heart. I believe Bajorans have a single liver, too. In the Talorian standard language, the liver, and only the liver, has a name that begins with a vowel. One of these things is not like the others, but I don't know which. I could be grasping at straws, but maybe not," he explained his thinking. It was very interesting indeed.

[ PO3 Kaya Som | Bridge ]
Kaya couldn't help looking over her shoulder at Niles, a violent confrontation with the other ship becoming more and more inevitable. The were preparing to roll in with hull breaching torpedos at the ready. She knit her brows; she didn't belong here.
"What, are we going to blast them out of the sky?" she spoke out, filter abandoned. The Mac wasn't the Jupiter Star, ambushed and unaware. "If we show up for a fight that's what we're going to get."
She didn't know where this was all coming from all of a sudden. Maybe she was thinking of crew over there, crew like her carried along for the ride. Maybe it was seeing the carnage on the Jupiter Star. Maybe she just didn't share others' hot-blooded drive for revenge.

She didn't want to think about the people who had forced their way onboard her home and butchered her family. She wanted to go with the nurse right then and sleep. The pull of peace, of blessed blackness, was strong. Tyler didn't even believe it would be all that bad if she didn't wake up. "Long. Elongated faces. Three triangles, two for the eyes and one for the mouth," she responded, surprising herself. Perhaps the promise of peace buoyed her resolve. Temporary as it might be, she had enough left in her tank for one more. "All the masks were red. I think they were painted with blood."Then she followed Ramona, her expression once again vacant. Charlie stared after her, sighed, and went to retrieve Olsen.
Tag: Matthew Harmon , soft: Thea Baker . Exit Tyler. *** [Commander R'Tesh - Dies Irae, Talorian Space]Insistent alarms sounded on the bridge. Commander R'Tesh spun around at her station, daggers in her stare. "Who is responsible for this!?" There was no reason for alarms to be sounding on their ship, this close to their home. It was a slip that would cost the clumsy crewmember a hand. "It is a vessel Commander! Starfleet. It is big. They have found us!"There was a note of panic to the voice. Others in the command center began to murmur to each other as paranoia grew. R'Tesh had thought she'd dealt with all of the spineless naysayers on board, but it appeared as though many of the crew had hidden their dissension well. "SILENCE!"All eyes turned toward her and she stared each one down in turn. "Inform the Princess immediately. We will face this intrusion into our space like the revered guard that we are. [ Orya - Dies Irae, Private Chambers to Bridge] With their mission reaching glorious completion, Orya had retired to her personal chamber in order to fulfill the last ritual before she took her rightful place as leader of not only the warrior faction but also the government. Those fools would soon know what it was like to doubt her and to dismiss her claims that they needed to return to the old traditional ways if the planet was going to survive. There would also be none of that Federation baklat poking around either and they would no longer be welcomed on their world, least they suffer the same fate as those they had already sacrificed for the greater good. No they would learn to fear her and that euphoria needed to be sated so she could focus on the final victory. To begin with she had taken a mate purely for her own satisfaction, picking one of the more deserving of suitors, whilst feasting on the delicacies they had collected. Letting the blood run down her whole body, as the union came to a natural conclusion. However it seemed as though the final ritual would be left tainted as O'Ran, her personal guard entered the outer room of her chamber, clearly disturbed and ignoring the fact that the Princess was still naked and covered in bloodstains. " Forgive my intrusion Princess .. but I thought that I should be the one to deliver the news from the Bridge" He said clearly, aware of what would of happened if D'Ronna had been the one to tell her Highness rather than someone close to her. " Then tell me O'Ran or should I loosen your tongue for you ... then again it would be a shame for you to become mute" Orya replied, her anger at the interruption evident as she reached for a long silk robe and put it on, without taking her eyes off of her guard. " No my Princess, your presence is needed as Starfleet have found us, one of their Sovereign Class starships has just arrived in our system".Orya roared in frustration upon hearing the news, throwing one of the more delicate vases against the wall, but even the sound it made did little to stop her anger. " Someone must of betrayed us, O'Ran find out who and kill them, whilst I deal with these intruders".O'Ran nodded his acknowledgement and hurried off before his Princess took her anger out on him, leaving Orya furious until she followed him and made her way to the Bridge. " R'Tesh report" she declared then addressed the rest of the bridge crew. " Be warned, O'Ran has orders to find and kill whoever betrayed us and led those Bataq's to our sacred system".

He gave her a sad, almost fatherly, smile and said, Petty Officer, I understand your sentiment. But it's difficult to not want to act in righteous anger in response to such horrifying actions; however, and this he addressed to Josh. We will not be firing any torpedoes unless they fire on us first. Have the weapons ready; we won't hail them until we're in phaser range. Be prepared to fire a warning shot only across their bow if it becomes necessary. And lieutenant, I hope I don't have to tell you what would happen if that ship is 'accidentally' destroyed with what should be a mere touch. [ Thea - Bridge, USS Mac] Delivering an autopsy report was never easy even after all of these years of having to perform them and yet this time felt different somehow and it took Thea a few moments to realise why as Sir Doug listened and shared his thoughts on what she had found. Yes it was barbaric, evil in fact but for Thea it had definitely affected her more than being able to shut off like normal and it was likely down to being a firsthand witness to the torture and seeing the way they had just been discarded. Although hearing more about these Talorian's would of usually been something of interest and their practices but since discovering that they were responsible for the attack, Thea had very little sympathy for them. Yes they had evidence, but there were still a lot of questions that they needed answered so they could learn and judge fairly. Was it out of desperation, some lone group who didn't like what was happening on their planet, so took matters into their own hands or simply their way of using and showing what they were capable of?. Until they got those answers assuming they were willing to part with that information, it was all speculation as the red alert sounded and Niles answered Doug, before making a recommendation about the enemy ship and the use of torpedoes. Then it was Som who spoke up and didn't blame the Engineer for what she said. However with Perry in charge, she knew it was up to him to restore order and remind the Tactical Lieutenant, to reign it in as he wasn't the only one who wanted justice for the Jupiter Star and that there was the right way to do it and not with guns blazing. So when the Commodore did speak, Thea listened and she couldn't of said it better herself, including how they would be dealing with this, once they got in range. " I know we all want to see them brought to justice but there is the right way to do this and hopefully we'll get all the answers we need as to their real motive for doing this, despite the evidence pointing to some traditional or ritual practice".Thea paused for a moment then spoke to Niles, with a view to Science assisting if needed. " What's the status of the other ship?, Are they aware of our presence and is there anything about the moon, that might cause interference?".

[Lt. (j.g.) Isaiah Quinn - Bridge, USS Mac] As the doors of the turbolift parted, Lieutenant (j.g.) Quinn stepped onto the Bridge. The flashing red lights matched the hue that had been within the confines of the turbolift. As he made his way towards his station, another science officer slid seamlessly out of the seat. He had been in Sickbay's medlab finalizing his report on the crime scene. There wasn't much to offer out of the ordinary from what he'd discovered. It was easy to confirm Talorian DNA, but there was also an interesting compound of note. He had forwarded his findings to one of the chemists on the Science Deck, but it seemed that the blades that had been used were coated with some sort of compound (a resin or a salve) that seemed to react to organic matter catalyzing an exothermic byproduct. It made for efficient removal of the organs... almost as efficient as a laser scalpel. In trained hands, it could be quite effective. Though, assuming the Talorians had acted with haste and little regard for life, it was possibly more like lacing the victims' innards with drops of a potent acid, burning them from the inside out as they bled out. All were details that would make it into his report, however, Isaiah could tell that he had walked in on quite the debate. It seemed that Petty Officer Som had expressed her opinion concerning their tactical approach to the Talorians. Quinn could understand, the last thing he wanted to see was for this to descend into a gunfight. Even Quinn wasn't sure if approaching them with weapons primed was the best idea. That alone could possibly provoke a confrontation that they hoped to avoid. The comment about slipping fingers directed towards Lieutenant Niles hadn't gone unnoticed either. Perhaps it was Thea attempting to bring calmer heads back to center when she asked about the status of the Talorian ship and whether or not the moon would cause some interference. Quinn allowed Niles to report on the status of the Talorian's ship, but spoke to issues regarding the moon. "There is a region of space between the moon and the planet that's a bit of a blind spot at the moment. The poles of both the moon and the planet are currently in proximity of one another and will be for about the next... two to three hours. Basically, an armada could be hiding right there, and we'd never see it unless we're looking out a portole." Of course, if they were that close, then it'd probably be too late.

[ Commodore Calvin Perry - Bridge] Perry had spent the time since the Mac had headed off in pursuit of the Talorian ship silently reading reports as they came in to the bridge and thinking over what Sir Doug had shared. He spent a lot of it staring into space, quite literally, since the screen with its view of streaking stars was directly in front of him. His gaze turned to the El-Aurian when he offered further comment on the possibility of the Talorians likelihood of fighting them even if they had no hope of winning or escaping. He nodded grimly, unable to find words to express his horror at what they might face if they managed to capture the culprits. At some point it had occurred to Perry that he should question whether Zaman had authorization to be on the bridge. It would be the most blatant cheek to be sitting there so casually if he didn't, but under the circumstances, the commodore decided to hold his questions for Dr. Baker after this ordeal was over. Sir Doug had been helpful, and there had been no reason to ask him to remove himself. Finally, the news came from tactical. Their quarry was in sight, more or less. Agreed, Lieutenant. Sound the alert.=/\= Perry to Dr. Baker. We've found the Talorian ship. Report to the bridge. =/\= [...] [ Thea - Cargo Bay 3] The autopsy of Raoul had been fairly straightforward and Thea had recorded a lot of information for her report, including how the culprits had taken, the heart, liver and kidneys leaving the lungs intact. Whatever the motive was for removing the organs, it seemed as though they were being very specific in what they wanted. It still didn't make it any better but at least they had some more answers. As she finished up and cleaned up, allowing the body to be placed back in stasis, Thea took a few moments of quiet contemplation before the silence was broken by a call from Perry. Any further contemplation would have to wait as she answered. =/\= Baker to Bridge, acknowledged, I'll be there momentarily =/\= Thea then exited the Cargo Bay and made her way towards the Bridge. [Bridge] Minutes later the lift doors opened and Thea stepped out, feeling the change in the atmosphere as she looked over towards the viewscreen. Realising how close they now where to discovering the truth as she acknowledged those present and made her way down to the command area and took her place in the XO's chair. " Our Bajoran patient is recovering and I've also completed an autopsy, they only removed the heart, liver and kidneys" she said quietly but loud enough for everyone to hear if they were listening. [ LT (JG) Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]"Aye Sir, Red Alert." Niles' voice was flat and hard, and his face a mask when he acknowledged the order that would bring the Mac to battle stations and his hands danced over his console to bring weapons online and get the targeting sensors active. It was time to go after those savages, and the recently-minted Lieutenant had a cold, dangerous light in his eyes as he completed the tasks he needed to in order to go into action. And just as the klaxon finished sounding, he heard what Doctor Baker and Sir Doug had to say, and for a moment he was not certain of the relevance of the information being presented. However, there was something that he needed to say. "Sir Doug, honestly, I don't see how that matters at all. From where we're standing, it was piracy, torture and murder of Federation citizens. Ideology isn't a defence for that sort of crimes."Then, as he locked his sensors on the target, something they would be certain to notice as he made no efforts to hide. Let them know they had been seen. Let them know who had their sights on them. However, he was still much too far. "Sir, we are well out of weapons range of them. I recommend we close within torpedo range before we hail them."

Would that work through this sort of interference?" the ancient man suggested. It was, all things considered, not the most advanced technique. One could strap a video camera to a bird, or a balloon, or an advanced scientific probe. [ LT (JG) Joshua Niles - Bridge, USS Mac ]The young Lieutenant's heart was pounding in his ears. The orders he had received had been clear. They would get in close, within the three hundred thousand kilometers of maximum phaser range, before issuing their challenge. And, not having been ordered to get a full weapons lock, the Tactical officer was left to running firing solutions using what was coming in through passive sensors rather than bringing up his active targeting array. He was going to keep himself ready to engage at the drop of a hat, doing the best he could with what he had. How he wanted to give them their initial hail with a brace of torpedoes across their bow. How he wanted to have them under a full weapons lock they would definitely know about, let them know of the firepower that was pointed right at them. How he wanted to make them pay for what they had done. That was why he had joined Starfleet and become a tactical officer: to protect good people from those who'd do them harm. He had failed to protect the crew of the Jupiter Star, but at least he could make sure they would never do the same to anyone else. However, when Commander Baker asked about their status, and the very clear sign showed on Niles' sensors that they had raised shield showed on his board. "They know we're here, Ma'am. No activity from the inner system but our target has raised shields."The Talorians who had attacked the Jupiter Star were right there and it felt as though the full impulse of their intercept course was like moving through molasses. A quarter of the speed of light, and they might as well have been crawling. The three million kilometers from relative rest of maximum torpedo wrench came and went, and he had a number of firing plans programmed. Firing harmless warning shots across their bow that would hit nothing but vacuum; firing to disarm them; firing to stop them from running; firing to turn them into an expanding cloud of debris and plasma. All he would need was the word and he would execute any of them. He was ready for it, to bring forth that kind of destruction to bear. In the deepest reaches of his mind, something had awoken: something cold, something ruthless. Something he never knew he had. He had been trained for this, gone through countless simulations. But he had never felt this, that instinct to want to hurt someone else. He had been surprised when the royal ship had been destroyed in front of him and he hadn't felt this. When he had his sights on Jeren, he hadn't felt this either. But now? That was something new... and he was not sure if he should be exulting in this new feeling, or if he should be ashamed of it. But now was not the time for this. And then, at long last, they entered the extreme range of their phaser arrays. So, he addressed the Commodore. "Sir, entering phaser range now. Standing by to hail them."Or to open fire, he did not add, even though the controls to bring his active sensors to bear to finalize his weapons lock and the lurid red ones that would activate his weapons were just there, begging to be used.

[LCDR Matthew Harmon - Sickbay] He could tell that Tyler was ready to get this over with. He couldn’t blame her, if course, but his priority was getting leads not her comfort. Fortunately, before she made her exit she did give him some more details on these cultish tribal masks. Perhaps Doug could find some use for that information. =/\= Harmon to Sir Doug. The survivors couldn’t give much information, however they did mention the attackers wore tribal masks with long elongated faces, and three triangles, two for the eyes and one for the mouth. Apparently they were painted red with what the survivor thinks is blood. Does this line up with any of your readings? =/\= As Harmon was talking to Doug, he noticed Charlie slip out of the room. For a moment he weighed up if he should let her be or follow her. Eventually, perhaps against his better judgment he decided to try and talk to her. Attempt that empathy thing Chloe had been telling him all about. “Ms Fox. Charlie,” he said as he caught her, hesitating as he tried to think of what to say. “That was your first time encountering anything like that in person wasn’t it?” He asked softly. He remembered the first time he saw a mangled corpse. It was never easy the first time. As the war progressed he had become desensitised. Accepted it as an inevitably and something that couldn’t always be avoided. But he understood how it could effect a person all too well. Tag: Charlie Fox
