[Charlie Fox - Intelligence Office Suite, Front Ear]"Here we are!" Charlie Fox declared enthusiastically as she reached the entrance to the Intel offices, her arms opened. She then turned on her heel on the threshold and brought her palms together in a clap. "The clandestine, super-secret, training ground for all of those Starfleet double-agents and spooks! Welcome, FNN viewers, to the next installment of Beneath the Veneer." She was walking backward, the equipment following her at a distance of roughly two meters, recording her engaging introduction. "Today we're going to remove the shroud of mystery covering this arm of the Fleet. We'll take a look at what happens here, behind the curtain protecting it, and judge for ourselves if this is the kind of work we should be supporting in this day and age." She smiled at holorecorder, a dimple appearing in her right cheek, her eyes glinting with devilment. Sensing the close proximity of a reception desk to her back, she stopped, turned and zeroed in on a young officer. "What about you, sir? What is the nature of your work here?"An ensign blinked several times at Charlie, then at the hovering camera, and back at her. "I-I don't..." He held up his hands. "I don't even go here, ma'am. I'm just delivering a report..." Charlie leaned casually against the desk, her smile still locked in place as she gestured with one hand for him to continue. "What kind of report might that be?""Some stats on the recent mish-" He broke off and narrowed his eyes at her. He seemed to be recovering from the shock of Hurricane Journo. "I don't think you're supposed to be here.""Are any of us supposed to be here, Ensign? I mean, figuratively speaking.""Wh-what?"The wattage of Charlie's smile increased ten-fold. "What are your thoughts on eminent domain?"The officer's mouth opened, and closed, his expression thoroughly miserable.

"What are your thoughts on eminent domain?"The officer's mouth opened, and closed, his expression thoroughly miserable. [LCDR Matthew Harmon - Intelligence Office]Harmon was sitting at his desk enjoying a nice glass of Midori mixed with lemon-lime soda while reading some tedious reports on last month's space traffic when he heard the commotion going on outside. He quickly sculled the rest of his drink and angrily stormed outside to see what was going on. "Ensign Whelan has no thoughts on eminent domain," he said, his voice clearly showing he was very displeased. "Thank you, Ensign. That will be all," he said taking the report and dismissing him, allowing him to flee from the difficult journalist. Now Harmon had to decide what to do with her. He wasn't too sure why she was here. Usually, and for most people he would have had her arrested and held for a few hours. However, he had seen her response to the Kurjarian crisis. She seemed clearly sympathetic to them, and was scathing of Starfleet. Sympathies, Harmon just so happened to privately share. "I should have you arrested," he said, his voice changing slightly, becoming softer. "What do you want Charlie? You've got thirty seconds to convince me I shouldn't go back inside, lock the doors and issue an order for your arrest." If it were anyone else annoying him this early on a Monday morning he would have had little hesitation to get rid of her.

[Charlie Fox - Intelligence Office Suite, Front Ear]She'd have accused Harmon of ruining her fun, but he was the reason she was there being a demanding nuisance in the first place. "Ensign Whelan, it seems, has no thoughts on anything." She grinned at the poor young man, and puckered her lips to blow him a kiss as he made a hasty exit. Her buoyed spirits dropped almost immediately, however, when he said the 'A' word. "Arrested!?" Charlie repeated, her eyes narrowing at him. "For what? Walking into an office?"How typical of the stuffy Fleet - zero to threats in 3.6 seconds. All that was missing was the apparatus to measure their members. She crossed her arms against her chest and nodded toward his office, calling his bluff. "Go ahead, Matthew. But while you're at it, you could deign to respond to my meeting request. I'll use my time in the brig to practice all the different ways I can tell you 'no' in preparation for the next time you want to put me in mortal danger."She could also pen a venomous article about misuse of power. Hell, she was just about ticked off enough to do that anyway.

"Arrested for annoying me," he said with a forced smile. Her reaction to his threats didn't faze him, it was entirely what he expected from her, and of course he didn't intend on carrying it out. The mention of meeting request, however he did not expect or know about. "What meeting request?" he said, rolling his eyes. "I haven't received any requests from Ops," he knew full well that Ops could sometimes take its sweet time to process things. He also knew that Charlie wasn't exactly the most patient of people. "It couldn't possibly be that your renowned patience gave out after ten minutes could it?" he said sarcastically. He'd read her article on the Kurjarians, though it didn't explicitly mention Starfleet by name, it was clearly a scornful indictment of its actions. And yet unusally Harmon felt neither anger nor frustration towards her, but shame on behalf of Starfleet and his role in it. She was right. He respected her, admired her even, though he wouldn't openly admit that, and so despite how irritating and self righteous she could be he was willing to consider helping her how he could.

[Charlie Fox - Intelligence Office Suite, Front Ear]"You are zero craic Harmon, you know that?" She asked when he'd told her to leave poor Whelan alone, and then followed it up with his reason for arresting her. She just about stopped herself from rolling her eyes, but at the same time, she couldn't help but wonder what the man was like outside of work. She could almost sense the sharp wit beneath all of the veiled threats and general impression that everyone was annoying the snot out of him. When he correctly called her lack of patience, she actually had the good grace to look a little chagrined. "I waited a whole hour!" She said in her own defense, loosening her crossed arms to gesticulate emphatically with her hand. She'd waited almost an hour. Close enough. It wasn't her fault that Ops were slow, or that people tended to ignore her meeting requests as standard operating procedure. Well, maybe that was her fault. "I need your help with something." Her expression and stance shifted to something a little less combative. There was no point in irritating the man any further if she actually wanted him to play ball. Though she had to admit, it was kind of fun. "I'm trying to follow something up. The Diplomatic Corps are stalling me."Her piece on the Kurjarian incursion, while distributed well, wasn't getting the kind of traction she'd hoped it would. She needed to continue to poke the Federation bear; to get something she could use to help.

Do I really bore you that much?" he replied sarcastically. "I think you'll find I can have my moments, not usually on a Monday morning after I've already been subjected to the tedium of bureaucracy and was forced to get up and put my drink down by a supercilious journalist, though. That all tends to put me in a poor mood." He paused before adding, "Or perhaps you would find that if we were to stop meeting so confrontationally." A sort of peace offering.
"An hour?" he laughed. "My apologies, your highness. I shall endeavour to ensure your requests are expedited in the future," he teased.
He then noticed as she seemed to switch to a less combative attitude. It seems she realised if she wanted something from him she may need to try a bit harder to make him more willing to help. "Surely you must realise, Charlie I'm not someone who tends to just help out anyone who asks. Especially journalists. Most in my line of work tend to view you as the enemy, as I'm sure you know," he wasn't going to just agree to help her. He needed some reason, or at least for her to pique his interest or provide something not so horribly boring for him to do.

Supercilious was one of Charlie's favourite adjectives, so she could maybe overlook it being used to describe her. She often used it against Fleeters, after all, and sometimes turnabout was fair play. "Thank you," she responded haughtily, her chin raised slightly and the corners of her lips twitching with amusement, though otherwise pretending that his sarcastic promise to expedite her requests was a real one. "That would be most appreciated!"His next words, however, had her arching a brow. "Are you someone who keeps his word?" She asked, her tone wry again as she challenged his lofty opinion of himself. Now who was being supercilious? "I seem to recall being owed quite a large favour by your department. I did, after all, walk unarmed and unprotected into a hostage situation at your request, and I remain completely uncompensated."Her hand raised and she tapped the side of her chin, studying him closely. He appeared unconcerned that they were having a potentially classified discussion outside of the privacy of his office. But, she supposed, if he wasn't bothered, why should she be? "I want to know where Chief Jeren is, Harmon. And I want to see him."

"I want to know where Chief Jeren is, Harmon. And I want to see him." [LCDR Matthew Harmon - Intelligence Office]Harmon smiled in amusement a little at Charlie's sarcasm but lost it as she tried to appeal to his integrity and honour. He had both in his mind, more or less, he just viewed them differently to more...orthodox perspectives. For instance he was often willing to break his promises or mislead and deceive where necessary. He instead opted for the lawyer in him to approach this. "I never agreed to any favours. My ensign suggested that Commander Eastman and Starfleet, or I could potentially repay you. Besides, I gave you the story. Access no other journalist had any hope of getting. Access to a story that could make your career. And you saved lives. Is that not it's own reward? I think you have been compensated" he said arguing against the idea he had any obligation to her. He gave her a moment to process it, himself still weighing up how much he wanted to help her. "What makes you think they've told me where he is? I don't control prisoner movement," he asked. He was telling the truth, at least partly. Starfleet hadn't informed him where Jeren was being kept. Harmon suspected it was because his sympathies to the Kurjarian cause must have been known or suspected, probably by someone reading his reports on the issue. What he left out was that he had done his own digging to find Jeren and he had a few leads. It seemed he had been taken to Cait for temporary holding but was likely to be transferred soon though he had yet to find out where. "Even if I could, and was willing to tell you where he is, do you really think they'd let a journalist, especially one who's first interview with Jeren was so damning to Starfleet's reputation?"

[Charlie Fox - Intelligence Office Suite, Front Ear]Charlie remained silent throughout all of Harmon's twisted speech. At first, at the suggestion that he could take responsibility for any career success was met with a stony, unhappy expression, which melted away into something completely blank as she stared at him. The wall came up, she could almost feel herself mentally detaching from this conversation with this needlessly contrary man. When he finished with another question and it seemed as though he required an answer from her, she spoke. "That's quite a lot of leaping, lord." His argument was mired with assumption and showed, in her opinion, a lack of any integrity whatsoever. She was wasting her time. "I'd appreciate it if you didn't try to wave off my stepping into a dangerous hostage situation as a favour to me. It's kind of gross, mate." Her tone was flat, her voice devoid of any previous joviality. "I wasn't there because of you, I was there because I was a demand. Now, if you don't want to uphold, or even recognise, the promises made by your department, that's your prerogative."She held up her hands and stepped backward, signalling she was done with the exchange. She began to move away but then paused to turn and add something. Normally, she'd have no problem throwing Fleet personnel under the bus, but in her coverage of the Kurjarian hostage situation, she'd never once disparaged any of the people on this station. "Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets are not the same thing, Lieutenant. You should know that."

[LCDR Matthew Harmon - Intelligence Office] Harmon paid close attention to Charlie’s reactions as he spoke. He picked up on her blank expression, her detachment, and frustration. When she spoke her tone became much more serious and cool than usual. As she laid into him he ignored her, responding with the same blank detached way she had to his own speech. He let her walk away, though she may have held the moral high ground and being right, he knew he held all the cards. She still needed him. “Out here, this far from civilisation the Fleet is Starfleet. There’s little other representation of the Federation to the surrounding civilisations. It’s just us. It’s unlikely many Kurjarians or Caldonians had met anyone from the Federation who wasn’t with the fleet. Until recently that is,” he said in rebuttal. He then stopped and waited for her to walk away before finally deciding to commit to helping her. To helping Jeren. “I can’t divulge classified information I have access to to those without a security clearance...” he paused for a moment to see her response, “However, in this case I don’t have access to the classified information you seek. But, for arguments sake, perhaps he was taken to Cait. The nearest major Federation world. Now hypothetically it would be my quite educated guess that he won’t be there for long. They’ll want him held somewhere more secure, more quiet. Your article was an embarrassment, they’ll try and bury this however they can. What I can say for sure, is you’re unlikely to get anywhere near him once he’s moved from Cait,” he let that sink in before finishing. “We can’t talk here.” Tag: Charlie Fox

[Charlie Fox - Intelligence Office Suite, Front Ear]She didn't respond, she kept walking. There was a distinction in her mind between the establishment and its enforcement arm, and often it was clear that those of the Fleet often had no idea of the politics behind the orders they received. Whether that made them less or equally as guilty in the aftermath of some crimes, she wasn't yet sure, but she usually had no problem separating the two, even if her derision for one often matched the other. Charlie did stop at his next words, however. She turned in the doorway, paused in motion, and listened. Cait. She should have guessed as much, though she'd thought he'd have been secured somewhere much further away from his homeworld and the scene of his crimes. She'd been wrong. Chief Jeren was much closer than she thought. Geographically, anyway. Practically, he was still just as impossible to get access to. We can't talk here. Those four words told her everything she needed to know. She left the threshold of the office and moved closer inside; closer again to the intelligence officer. "I want to apologise for my imposing on your office today. I realise now it was really rude to barge in uninvited," she said loudly, obviously not meaning a word of it. "Let me buy you a drink when you're finished your shift?"She lowered her voice a little. "Room 212, Twilight Hotel & Casino."~~~ [Room 212, Twilight Hotel & Casino]Sometime later...The room wasn't fancy; it was the kind one paid for by the hour. It held a queen-sized bed, a small reception area containing two armchairs and an end-table, and a number of holoviewers displaying various exotic vistas. Charlie sat in one of the chairs and helped herself to another glass of the blue ale. It was left over from another meeting she'd had in the room previously and while she waited, she decided she'd give it a good home. A part of her wondered if he'd accept the invitation, or blow her off, realising that the professional consequences might outweigh any need for doing the right thing. But then, the man was a spook, everything he did was likely somewhat clandestine, and without any discernible purpose.

[LCDR Matthew Harmon - Intelligence Office] Harmon smiled and nodded slightly as Charlie came closer and suggested a conciliatory drink, indicated she understood what he was implying. “That sounds good, I accept your apology,” he said politely. It wasn’t likely he was being watched but it was possible and he didn’t want to draw too much attention. [Room 212, Twilight Hotel, Some Time Later] That evening Harmon donned a simple very average and inconspicuous navy blue blazer and white shirt and made his way to meet Charlie at her hotel room. As he came up from the lobby he was careful to make sure he wasn’t being followed and once he was sufficiently satisfied he entered. It was hardly a particularly fancy room, but she did seem to have some booze which was what really mattered most to him. No good having an extravagant room if there was nothing to drink. “I do hope no one’s noticed our meeting,” he said as he entered. “I wouldn’t want another scandal,” he said with a smile. “What are you drinking?” He asked as he took a seat on the other armchair. [Charlie Fox - Room 212, Twilight Hotel & Casino]She'd left the door open, ready to receive her guest. Considering who and where she was, it probably wasn't the safest idea, but as far as she was aware only a handful of people knew that she kept this room. Charlie was taking something of a risk letting Harmon in, seeing as he could bring a team down on her and tear this place apart with just one word, but then again he was taking a risk of his own, of a different kind. What was that phrase? Mutually assured destruction. She watched him as he progressed into the room, crossing one leg over the other and leaning back in the armchair. "Another scandal? Meet a lot of ill-reputed ladies in hotel rooms, Matthew?" Charlie chuckled and then indicated toward the bottle. "Rommie ale. Help yourself."That, she supposed, was another test. The blue booze wasn't exactly legal, but she was willing to bet that Harmon had much bigger fish to fry. Thinking she'd probably done enough with the pleasantries, she speared him with a question. "Tell me who is on Cait with him." Matthew Harmon

"Tell me who is on Cait with him." [Matthew Harmon - Room 212, Twilight Hotel]"Oh well you know how it is," he said sarcastically, "Always sneaking around, I get accused of all sorts of ill-reputed behaviours." He pleasantly surprised to be offered the Rommulan ale. It had been some time since he'd enjoyed the strong blue liquor. "Now Charlie, are you trying to give me more reasons to arrest you?" he joked as he poured himself a glass. "Luckily I picked up a fondness for the blue stuff during the war. I spent quite a bit of time with the Romulans. And we drank a lot," he said. His assignment with the Romulans was still classified so he didn't go into too much detail. With the banter out of the way, Charlie turned quickly to business. He was relieved that small talk wasn't going to go on for much longer. "His men are also being held on Cait, however I believe they will be transferred elsewhere. The deal Izeg tried to make has made the Federation go a little easier on some of the hostage takers, provided they continue to cooperate. I suspect your article made strict punishment of the whole group politically unfeasible for the Federation," he wasn't entirely sure who she was asking about, and he also didn't have all the information given Starfleet was restricting as much as it could. "I've heard the prosecutor for Jeren will be Arohl Ch'azhaover," he said before pausing for a moment to take a sip. "I've worked with Chazha, he's an aggressive 'no tolerance' type. To me I suspect this means they're going to go hard on Jeren. I haven't got word on who will try the rest of them, or even if they're to be tried as a group or individually." He paused to take another sip. "As for other prisoners, the only other high public profile prisoner still held on Cait is K'law who was that serial killer they convicted last month."

[Charlie Fox - Room 212, Twilight Hotel & Casino]"I've heard of Ch'azhaover alright," she said when Harmon identified Jeren's prosecutor, "A fan of maximum sentences by all accounts." She remained silent for the rest, and when it appeared he'd finished delivering the information, she leaned forward and pulled a small PADD out of her back pocket. Her eyes still on Harmon, she tapped at the screen, taking a note or two. "So you reckon they'll sate the masses with leniency for Izeg and the rest of their crew, citing their willingness to cooperate as the reason, but throw the book completely at Jeren. A compromise for the interested media outlets?"She pursed her lips, dropped the PADD to the table and picked up her drink instead. "Do you think if we promised to present a balanced, thoughtful view of the situation they'd let someone from the FNN in?" What she might have done, in another life, was pretend to be doing a piece on noted murderer K'law, and use the opportunity to find out everything she could on Jeren instead once she was in the walls. But they'd never go for that, not when her name was involved. "You and Chazha," she said, using the nickname Harmon had bestowed upon him, "How close are you?" She took a sip of her Romulan ale and waited.
