Please write a brief answer to 3 of the following (a sentence or two for each is fine):
Your character's most painful experience
His father's disappointment at James's class ranking in Starfleet. James's older brother had ranked higher, and his dad was hard on them to succeed.
Your character's best or favorite experience
He once had an entirely successful date with a boy from Starfleet Academy, and remembers it fondly. There have been many academic achievements that he might perhaps think of as more important, but this was a rare romantic outing that had actually gone nicely for him. He has had little time to explore romantic relationships with either men or women.
Your character's most crucial experience
There was a teacher in James's early life that encouraged his natural love for science and pushed him to work hard. This teacher convinced James that he could achieve any dream if he worked hard enough. This was perhaps James's foundational life experience, as everything else he has done and will do is built upon the support that this teacher offered.
Who is your character's role model and why?
Please write a brief sample post from your character’s perspective:
James laughed as his brother rocketed a baseball straight for James's chest. The young Academy graduate was prepared for it, and with a satisfying thud he closed his mitt around the ball.
"Was that supposed to scare me?", James asked his brother Stephen. Stephen smirked and patted his mitt.
"Not scare you," Stephen said, "Maybe test you, though!". The older brother was wearing his red Starfleet uniform, as his shore-leave was up and he would have to report to his station that afternoon.
James smiled back and launched the ball back at Stephen. That morning had been a rare opportunity for relaxed free-time, without any pressure to be working on something or trying to prove something. He and his brother were tossing the ball back and forth to each other, challenging one another with ridiculous throws and ever-growing distances. For much of James's life, Stephen had represented a hurdle - an obstacle to overcome. Stephen had their father's name, and had perhaps never tasted failure in his life. That morning was different, however - they were just brothers, tossing a ball in their backyard.
"Not much of a test," James joked as the ball was returned to him. "When do I get to test you, by the way? I was thinking I'd give you something really challenging, like counting to ten or maybe saying the alphabet." His older brother rolled his eyes. "Ha-ha", Stephen replied.
James tossed the ball back to his brother; his shoulders slumped when Stephen wiped sweat from his brow and pulled his hand free of its mitt. "Are we done?", James asked. Stephen sighed and nodded, closing the distance to put his hand on James's shoulder. "I have to get to the ship," Stephen said. "I'm sure you'll get an assignment any day now, Jim."
"It's James," the younger brother replied. "You know that."
"Yeah, yeah. James. I'm proud of you."
"I'm proud of you. Be safe. Don't be a hero."
"We'll see."
The brothers pulled each other into a brief hug before Stephen turned and walked back inside. James sighed, looking up into the sky as he tried his best to bury the tears welling in his eyes.
