[Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Max Williams - First Officer’s Quarters, USS Mac - One month after S1M5/S1E6]The Mac had traveled three days, and had another 14 hours before arrival at Sigma-4. Judy was seated on the sofa of her quarters, wearing her steel blue Tholian silk housecoat and pajama set. She took a deep breath as she resolved to put her present thoughts into the record. "First Officer’s personal log. The Mac is due to reach Nyberrite station Sigma-4 tomorrow in the late morning hours to conduct our joint exercises. Against the threat of increased Tholian activity, the Federation and the Alliance have decided to cooperate on our mutual defense needs. In a sense, this trip is a triumph for multilateralism and Federation diplomacy: in spite of our mutual disagreements, we are here conducting these exercises with the Alliance in pursuit of shared interests - peace and security. On its face, and in our statements to the press, this is the story. If only it were truly so..."Her voice trailed off with a hint of lamentation, of disappointment, perhaps even of nostalgia for the more peaceful past. ”Unfortunately, the world is too complicated for such lofty gains to go untarnished. For us, this is a golden opportunity to gather intelligence on Nyberrite capabilities, the kind that the Alliance gets by poaching ex-Starfleet personnel. For them, it’s an opportunity to size this crew up, to gauge our competence and our disposition. It is my hope, and I’ve made this known, that our crew will leave a positive impression; despite the tension we’ve seen back on the station, the Nyberrite Alliance is one of our better friends in this volatile region. The last thing we need coming out of this is a diplomatic incident.”These matters weighed on Judy; that much was clear. Scarred by one war, the last thing she wanted was to make the next one come quicker. ”If all goes well, this exercise will, on its balance, be a triumph for diplomacy, like we all want it to be, and like I told Michael it would be when we left the station. End log.”Judy turned her head, to the sound of footsteps coming out of the shower; there was Max in a towel. ”You’re not going to mention Mikey starting First Grade in your log?” he asked her. ”It doesn’t feel real. My whole shtick for the last five years was making the Quadrant a better place for our Grandchildren to grow up in, and here Michael is growing up on me,” she answered. ”And here you are: Grandma the diplomat, Grandma the Galactic protector. The Grandkids are all proud of you, and so am I,” he reassured her, combining the words with a gentle pat on the head. ”I need to live up to that.””The real disappointment is Grandma the avocado-cutter,” Max teased. That was the real reason he was here. Judy had an excessive collection of on-duty injuries for someone who spent most of her hours seated, and he wouldn’t have her limping around her quarters again without him there to help. Judy Eastman could oversee the full administration of a station or ship with unrivaled talent, Max believed, but she could not be trusted with her own health. ***The next morning... [Cmdr. Judith Eastman(-Williams) & Ens. Mabel Henriksen - Bridge, USS Mac]After spending some time on paperwork, Judy entered the bridge, in time to oversee the docking. She cut the same grandmotherly image as always, with her cat-eye bifocals, knee-length uniform skirt, and a plate of baked goods. Mabel trailed her, with a folding table to hold the plate. ”Good morning!” she greeted as she walked towards the center chair, flashing a warm smile all around. ”Just a word of warning, the rectangular ones are very spicy.”For each of the previous days of this trip, all three of them, Judy had brought baked goods to the Bridge, sometimes sweet, sometimes savory. Today’s munchies were bourekas, a Middle Eastern pastry[fn]Bourekas are crumbly pockets of Filo dough with a filling[/fn]: the triangular ones were filled with cheese[fn]See image: [/fn], while the rectangular ones were filled with homemade Hasperat. For those who would choose to come along for the exercise, there would be more Eastman-Williams home cooking later. An army, however technologically advanced, marches on its stomach. For those who preferred to go on the station and get to know the Alliance, Starfleet had arranged per diem to cover food, booze, and whatever other expenses.

[NPC - Colonel Helena Vasser - Bridge, N.S.S. Soteria] Colonel Vasser looked over the latest mission reports, and her brow furrowed at the sight of them. A heavy sigh left her lips, as she saw that a freighter outside of Tyrus VII had issued a distress call. By the time one of the Alliance’s vessels had responded, they found nothing. There were a few jettisoned containers, but the ship and any sign of its crew were gone. More than that, it appeared that it had not reached its destination to Caldonia. Truth be told, it may have been easier if it were the Talorians. It seemed that Starfleet had had a run-in with them recently. Yet, there were traces that matched Tholian emissions in the area. Vasser looked up from the PADD as her science officer announced that the USS Mac was approaching. Vasser looked up. ”On screen,” she ordered. It wasn’t long before the sight of the Federation Sovereign-class vessel filled the screen. The Mac was there for a reason: the Tholians. Lately, they seemed inclined to flex their muscles. An agreement had been reached between the Federation and the Alliance to maintain order with a show of solidarity. Hopefully, the Tholians would get the message. Of course, this training exercise was hopefully, the first of many, to show that the two groups could work well together. Colonel Vasser turned to her communications officer. ”Inform the Mac that it’s a pleasure to receive them. The station will contact them shortly with docking procedures and boarding protocols.” Neema watched the sight of the ship a moment longer before turning her attention back to her own ship. ”Tactical. I take it we’re ready?” Upon hearing the answer, she turned her attention to comm unit on her chair. ”Vasser to Engineering. Report.”
[NPC - 2nd Lieutenant Neema - Docking Port, Plaza Level, Starbase Sigma 4] As Neema strolled down the Plaza, she could get a sense of the mood. There was a sense of excitement along with annoyance. It was to be expected, especially considering how some of their very own soldiers had been treated on the Federation starbase, Front Ear. Nevertheless, it seemed that preparations had already been made. There were a variety of shop owners eager to welcome new business. The local sports bar, Kirby’s was primed for the newcomers, even expanding their menu to include beer on tap and Hasperat. Neema couldn’t sense Frax the Ferengi’s intentions, but his dancers were eager for fresh faces and hopefully better tippers. The El-Aurian that owned the boutique didn’t really care for change, but she wouldn’t turn away good money. The Courtyard had been prepared with a nice floral arrangement and ideal atmospheric settings. And then there was the holo-dome. It had been giving them some trouble recently, but the station’s chief engineer promised to have it up and available for the Fleeters’ arrival. Finally, reaching the docking port, Neema saw that it was still closed. She was on time, not that she doubted it. She stood there a moment, until the sudden crank of the door signaled to Neema that the moment had finally come. Her smile broadened as she stood there waiting to greet the representatives from the Federation. The itinerary had already been sent. She was more than prepared to escort those that were interested on a brief tour of the areas that they had been cleared for. Some of the more sensitive areas… well, from her understanding, that level of trust hadn’t been established yet. But perhaps they’d get a little closer after today. With her hands behind her back, she smiled to greet the crew as they began to disembark. ”Greetings. I’m Lieutenant Neema. On behalf of the Nyberrite Alliance, please allow me to be the first to welcome you to Starbase Sigma 4.”

[Ens. James Aubrey - Bridge, USS Mac] The time had finally come. After weeks of practically wasting away in his quarters on Front Ear Station, it had finally come time to step aboard his first posting - the USS Mac. The young ensign had done nothing but pour over the USS Mac's records and the dossiers of its crew; partly because he needed some way to fill his time, and partly because he felt it was important to have a basic understanding of the crew he would be joining. Dossiers, though, could only hold his interest for so long, and so when it came time for the USS Mac to participate in diplomatic exercises with the Nyberrite Alliance, James was one of the first to volunteer. That morning was his first on the Bridge. His eyes were eager and wide as the doors slid open and he stepped onto the bridge of the Mac for the very first time. Assuming his place at the Science station, James was like a kid in a candy store. It was impossible for him to wipe away his giddy grin as Commander Eastman entered the bridge. Food was offered, and James took happy strides across the bridge to accept. He picked a rectangular boureka, taking a polite bite as he walked back to his station. "Good morning Commander," he said to Judy after he had swallowed his first bite. "Wow, this is good," he announced happily. James seemed entirely different on-duty than he did off. He stood tall and proud in uniform, totally confident in himself. He was the total polar opposite of the shy young kid that had been on the station. Onboard the USS Mac, he carried himself like a capable young officer. Whether or not he would prove truly capable was to be seen. He returned to his station, his cheeks blushing slightly from either Judy's spicy boureka or his boundless joy to be on-duty. Both, more than likely. Judith Eastman

CMO's Quarters - USS Mac, The Next Morning] With their arrival at Sigma-4 fast approaching, Thea wanted to spend the next hour or so enjoying a peaceful and private breakfast with her soon to be double promoted Boyfriend, before they became focused on duty and whatever this mission would take them, in regards to the join exercise with the Nyberrite Alliance. The CMO hadn't met anyone from the Alliance personally but she had heard the stories and read the reports on who they would consider as potential allies, despite some of the more colourful aspects of what they were rumoured to take part in. She wasn't one to gossip as such, preferring to meet someone for herself rather than judge them on rumour and possible lies, which had led to comparisons to her late Father who was known to prefer fact over fiction. Although for now, she could focus on something more personal with a little help from the Mess Hall Manager to put on a small feast, including all of Isaiah's favourites in order to deliver the surprise that she had planned since they had left Front Ear. Awarding promotion was always a favourite perk of being a command level officer and Thea couldn't wait to see Isaiah's face, when she handed over the solid gold pip, as well as the extra bonus of her beloved receiving a DH spot. So with everything set and the box hidden from view until the right moment, Thea waited for Isaiah, whilst trying not to let the excitement get the better of her.

[Lt. (j.g.) Isaiah Quinn - Corridors --> CMO's Quarters, USS Mac] As Isaiah strolled down the corridor, as he reviewed the information that they had received from the Nyberrite Alliance. There was a large number of the crew venturing over the visit the station. He was honestly hoping to at some point see it himself. He was sure that the Alliance would be guarded about what they shared, but no more so than Starfleet had been with the Alliance aboard Front Ear. He still hadn't seen the final list of assignments. He'd just have to wait to see where everyone ended up. Hopefully, everything would remain civil. Hopefully, it wouldn't descend into the ugliness that had happened with the Talorians. He could still remember that final moment when Lt. Commander Harmon made that bold declaration on the Bridge, certainly without Commodore Perry's say so. How they weren't blown out of the sky at that very moment, Isaiah would never know, but he wouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. As he reached his destination, Thea's quarters, her lowered the PADD and pressed the door bell. He stood there patiently, anticipating what she had whipped up for breakfast. It was certainly a change of pace as she typically would have invited him to meet her in the Mess Hall.

Tag: Thea Baker [CMO's Quarters - USS Mac] The moment Thea heard the door chime, she instantly began to smooth down her uniform and her long slightly curled hair, whilst simultaneously trying not to bump into anything on her way to the door. As excited as she was to always see Isaiah, it wouldn't look good if she greeted him whilst sporting an injury caused by her eagerness and occasional clumsiness. That and not wanting the special breakfast to be ruined or delayed so she could treat said injury without the need to go to Sickbay. No that would be highly embarrassing for her and could easily imagine the gossip as a result. So after a lucky escape with a side table, Thea reached the door and quickly pressed the control panel, as a small seductive smile appeared on her face as the door opened to reveal her handsome Boyfriend standing outside. Naturally Thea leaned over and greeted him with a kiss, before speaking to him. " Hey you, I know this may of been a little out of ordinary, but I think you'll like what I've come up with, instead of us going to the Mess Hall" she explained, as she stood back to reveal the rather full looking dining table. Bridge watch. That was truly where Lieutenant (Junior-Grade) Joshua Niles belonged, if he dared say so himself. Of course he had duties that kept him at a desk rather than his Tactical station, or even the odd time in the big chair since he had passed his Bridge Officer's examination, but paperwork was part of the work that was the due of any officer, especially one aspiring to higher responsibilities. However, lately he had spent time studying what little was known about Nyberrite ships and doctrine in preparation for a series of drills and exercises. And truth be told, he wished he had more to go on. Granted, dealing with the unknown was part and parcel of being sent out to the back end of nowhere, but between the various less than friendly people they had run across, unpleasant phenomena and other issues, he certainly could do with more certainty. So, there he was, with his coffee at his left hand, and his eyes on his console when Commander Eastman and her Yeoman entered the Bridge. "Morning Ma'am," he called from his position, clearly having developed a degree of confidence since he'd first arrived at this distant post and lost some of that formality that had hobbled him so far. And, of course, there was this young Science officer, Mister Aubrey, who made the Lieutenant wonder if he had ever been this eager himself... "Miss Henriksen, how are you this morning?" As he addressed the Yeoman, he made his way to the folding table and grabbed one of the cheese pastries, selecting one of the mild ones as he had no notion of what 'spicy' meant to Commander Eastman, and it would not do to fall victim to capsaicin poisoning right there on the Bridge. Returning to his station, pastry in one hand, he worked is board with the other. "Mister Aubrey, if you would, could you please get me a detailed emissions read on that cruiser off our starboard bow?" Oh, getting that sort of details was something he could do himself all right, but Ensigns were there to learn, so might as well make use of him and his talents.

She slammed her fist against the intercom panel and raised her voice enough to be heard over the din of the work. =0= Engineering, Vasser - we're good. =0= Preparations for the war games had all hands working across all shifts at a pace that made the recruit's initial training seem like R&R. It was now more than a month since Starfleet's intel goon Harmon had stuck her undercover in the Nyberrite Alliance and Avi was almost getting used to it. Almost. She'd run afoul of command more than once, but hadn't yet been found out as the mole she was. Avi was able to get word to Harmon every few days, all the while busting her arse and trying to keep busy. And if not busy, under the influence. Anything to make the days pass more quickly. "Moz! Hell! She'll want an actual report!"Avi amended her initial communication quickly enough. =0= Engine modifications are done, shield and tractor synch done, weapons systems power upgrade done, light crafts retrofit done. =0= "Was that so hard? Tags Judith Eastman James Aubrey [ James Aubrey - Bridge, USS Mac] James turned to face Joshua, and nodded eagerly at the order. "Yes Lieutenant," he said happily as he turned back to his station. His fingers tapped the screen in front of him, targeting the starboard cruiser and gathering the data for the Lieutenant. They had never met informally, but James had certainly had the foresight to familiarize himself with the other officers who would be serving on the bridge that day. The emissions data was gathered easily enough, and James sent it to Joshua's station. As far as the ensign could tell, there was nothing out of the ordinary. "Emissions reading forwarded to you, Lieutenant," Aubrey reported, turning back briefly to Josh's station as he spoke before the ensign's attention returned to his own screen. James delighted in formality, and in procedure. He stood at his board with a straight back and head held high; perhaps some might say he looked silly, but no one could say he looked unprepared or lazy. His hands continued working the screen in front of him, gathering routine data and preparing himself for the exercises ahead. Even an officer as green as himself could understand the importance of the day's events. They needed to go smoothly, or else someone higher up the ladder than the young ensign would end up sitting in endless meetings and conferences to clean up the mess. Things might get even worse than that, but James considered the possibility to be unlikely. Perhaps he was right, or perhaps he was naively optimistic. Joshua Niles

[Main Engineering, USS Mac] K'Dex had found an odd job assigned to him for his initial task for the day, and then to be on-call. From what little K'Dex had bothered to listen to about the current mission, they were visiting a foreign station, and his listenings had proven correct as he was now assigned to the bridge to begin structural scans, and create his own assessment of the station, while manning the engineering station. Shrugging, he slung his constantly changing versions of pouches around his mid section, and briefly felt each pocket for it's intended items. Finding it all in order, he brought out his PADD briefly, checked that the assignment was accessible, and then returned it before slowly padding his way to the turbolift up to the Bridge. [Bridge, USS Mac] As he stepped off the turbolift, his let his claws extend till they clicked slightly against the deck, and retracted again. It was one of a variety of odd habits that K'Dex had, but it gave him a bit more feeling of stability whenever changing onto or off the turbolift. On the ride up, he'd been forcing himself into what he called his "professional" mindset. He was an officer now, not an engineer. His eyes scanned quickly over the bridge, recognizing very few of the faces, before resolutely walking over to the engineering station, and sitting down. It afforded him an excellent view of the main screen, and he softly began the scans that would be automatically recorded. Then he leaned back slightly, and let his eyes drift over the view, looking for what stood out to him.

Tags James Aubrey @jeb [Ens. James Aubrey - Bridge, USS Mac] James smiled as Lieutenant Niles praised his work. The task had been simple, almost impossible to screw up, and not particularly difficult, but still it was exciting to be officially praised for something. His pride took a bit of a hit when he received a piece of advice from the officer that confused him - relax? Strain his back? James didn't feel tense, or even particularly anxious ... so the advice mostly fell flat to him. He was blissfully unaware of how he might be perceived; all he knew was his joy to be working on the bridge of the ship. "Ah .... yes Lieutenant. Thank you," he said politely, turning his head back to his station in order to carry out the further task that Lieutenant Niles had given him. At about the same time, Commander Eastman officially took command and gave her first orders of the morning. Conveniently for him, he had simply been told to continue with his work. "Yes Commander," he said happily as he continued scanning and sending reports of the various other starships around the station. At some point, he happened to notice the entrance of a Caitian. He had never met a member of the species, and stopped a moment to observe the (to him) unique specimen. Memories of biology lectures flickered through his mind before he turned back to his work, his lips spread in a small smile.

[ Lt, jg. Aravis - Main Bridge] Lieutenant (squee) Aravis was beginning to quite enjoy the casual atmosphere on the Mac’s bridge. Almost too much. Commander Eastman certainly liked to ply them with food. The young Ba’ku darted from her station and grabbed a pastry, with a quick duck of her head in thanks, not even paying attention to which she ended up with, and returned, knowing that the Nyberrite station would be sending through docking protocols any time. Back at her post, Aravis got a couple of bites of what turned out to be cheese boureka before the first officer hailed the station. Yes, ma’am, she responded to the order to stand by. Her fingers danced a little nervously above her console, mapping out the controls she’d need for docking. This was her first time at the helm of the Mac since her disastrous runabout trip to Kerelia. She could do this. She’d docked ships of all sizes many times without any problems...mostly in simulation, but still. There were a lot of other young officers on the bridge, which made her both nervous and feel better. On the one hand, with a bridge full of greenies, well, there were bound to be little mistakes; at the same time, Aravis wanted to stand out amongst her fellows to and for the commander.

She had no desire to see her former crewmates, even as short a time as that was the case, but for some reason, the Alliance kept throwing back in with Starfleet. Ridiculous. But maybe she could avoid any contact herself, certainly by staying aboard the Soteria since the Mac’s crew was being invited to visit the Alliance’s station. Yes, she’d just stay on the ship, maybe work some extra shifts, start garnering some goodwill with her peers and superiors.

[CMO's Quarters - USS Mac] The moment Thea heard the door chime, she instantly began to smooth down her uniform and her long slightly curled hair, whilst simultaneously trying not to bump into anything on her way to the door. Lt. (j.g.) Isaiah Quinn - CMO's Quarters, USS Mac] As the door parted, Isaiah's smile broadened at the sight of his girlfriend. She greeted him, making note that she knew that this little gathering was out of the ordinary, but she clearly had some motive for choosing her quarters as the site for breakfast over the Mess Hall. After stepping inside, he soon saw the dining table, and was impressed with the set up. "Wow," he remarked as he began to move towards it. "What's all this?" It was certainly more of a spread than either of them would have gotten in the Mess Hall. Which of course begged the question of whether this was some sort of special occasion. His mind raced briefly, trying to see if he'd forgotten anything. To the best of his knowledge, he hadn't. They had celebrated her birthday while away on Aitrus, and they were weeks away from any sort of anniversary. He moved towards the table and began to inspect the contents of the spread. "Belgian Waffles, Argelian sausage, Hekaran egg broth, Nuvian toast and Kelpian jam," the science officer noted. He stood there shaking his head. "What didn't you replicate?" he asked chuckling.

Soteria] Upon hearing the initial response from Engineering, Vasser arched her eyebrow. Her eyes shifted to look towards Lieutenant Banks, wondering if there was an issue with communications. However, the engineer went on to say more, reporting that the modifications to the engines were complete along with the weapons upgrade as well as synching the shield and tractor systems. It even seemed that the refits to the light crafts had been done as well. In Vasser's opinion, that was one of many things that would likely give them an edge. =0= "Excellent work," =0= Vasser praised. =0= "It sounds as if we're well ahead of schedule. Keep me apprised of the work being done to the sensor grid as well as fortifying our power grid. Vasser out." =0=It seemed that things seemed to be progressing quite nicely indeed. Vasser was rather excited about this exercise, even if a number of her crew weren't. Still, most seemed to like the idea of having an opportunity to show up the Fleeters. Perhaps it could be a step in shrinking the rift between the two crews. "Lt. Banks," she said to the operations officer, one whom had actually served with members of the Mac's crew. "Give us a little peek at the Mac's emissions. See how they stand up to Major Chromar's last report. I'm sure they gave her a tune up, but I'd like to know if there are going to be any surprises from her."Vasser leaned back in her chair. There was still a while before they began. After all, some of the crew would be heading to the station. It almost made Vasser wonder if the Mac's commander was planning to take some of the rookies through the paces, or actually give the Soteria a test. If so, they'd find the Soteria more of a challenge than anticipated. As an Aegis-class cruiser, she was built to take a pounding, but she was still capable of sparring with the best of them.

[NPC - Captain Rez Jogann - Command Center, Starbase Sigma 4] The Brikarian stared at the image of the Sovereign-class vessel approaching. He could hear the hail asking for clearance and instructions to dock. In Jogann's opinion, this was just another pain in the ass. He could remember his orders: maintain the peace, and be diplomatic where the Fleeters were concerned. Well, he certainly wasn't going to let them run amok on the station. The protocols for visiting the Sigma 4 had been sent. It was up to them to abide by them. He looked over at the Klingon, Ges. "Open the floodgates of hell," he mumbled, conceding for her to grant them clearance. The large figure began to move towards the turbolift. As the doors parted, he stepped inside and looked back at those remaining in the command center. His eyes fell upon Ges. "If this goes off without bloodshed, the first round of bloodwine is on me." As the doors hissed shut, the Brikarian called out his destination. "Plaza, Upper level,"As he felt the lift move into motion, Jogann lifted his heavy arm so that he could speak into his communicator on the back of his hand. "Jogann to Neema. They should be heading your way soon. First sign of trouble, call me. Jogann out." Those negotiators in the Diplomatic Corps had a knack for keeping up the sunny disposition, but Jogann was sure that the only reason rookie had landed this gig because she was the one on the bottom rung. [NPC - 2nd Lieutenant Neema - Docking Port, Plaza Level, Starbase Sigma 4] "Welcome to Starbase Sigma 4. Welcome to Starbase Sigma 4," Neema rehearsed to herself. It wasn't until she heard the security officer's voice on her communicator that she ceased. She had been given the heads up. It sounded like docking procedures were underway. That meant the first of the Fleeters would soon be arriving. She looked down, double checking that her uniform was in order, and then forgot that she hadn't responded to Captain Jogann's comm. "Yes, sir. Understood, sir." she stated as he closed the comm. She took one final breath, her eyes on the door itself as she waited for the slightest movement, signalling the first of the Fleeters were about to set foot upon a Nyberrite station for the first time. Hopefully, it wouldn't be the last.
