Personal History
Early Life/Pre-Starfleet Career:
Phoebe was born on Earth in Chicago to journalist Jessica Volante and tactical officer Nathen Volante. Due to her father being away on various ships she spent most of her childhood with her mother, though she felt a sort of admiration towards her father and his choice of occupation. Phoebe decided very young she too would join Starfleet, possibly even follow her father into tactical.
The girl's childhood was happy and relatively uneventful, until she was 11 when the news of her fathers death aboard the USS Buran. She was told that he had died fighting bravely against an overwhelming force she would later learn was the Borg. This event is what cemented Starfleet into her mind.
Most of Phoebe’s teenage years were spent preparing for the academy and learning anything she could about the Borg. Her mother being a journalist helped greatly with her ‘investigation’, though insisted on making sure this came second to her academic studies. She passed the entrance exams with flying colours, except The Psych test. Which she barely scraped herself through.
Academy/Technical Academy (if Starfleet):
Phoebe spent most of her time at the academy studying or continuing her Borg obsession, leaving very little time for social interaction. The closest she got to being in a crowded room was when she was nearly expelled for accidentally detonating her bedside cabinet with gunpowder, and was pulled in before several superiors. The only thing that saved her was that she was still almost top of her class in her actual studies. Though her replicator requests were to be closely monitored in case she tried to make gunpowder again.
Her classmates mocked her for the gunpowder inccident for a while, not only because it was a stupid thing to do, but mainly because she singed off her eyebrows in the explosion.
Phoebe took extra classes on top of the usual tactical requirements including various martial arts and painting. Outside of class her obsession with the Borg continued into learning more about ancient weapons, as she thought the Borg shield couldn't adapt to physical projectiles. She began to enjoy sitting and painting various parts of the academy and people watching as they went by. By the end of her time at the academy she was beginning to regret not spending more time socialising and attempting to make at least a few friends.
Despite these activities, her lack of social interaction and her obsession, she managed to graduate both the standard academy as well as the Advanced Tactical Training.

Phoebe pulled her chair up to her cabinet where she had laid out the ingredients for her little experiment. As she lowered herself onto the seat, she picked up the pad with the instructions she needed. She placed the lump of charcoal into the mortar and began to grind it down into the powdered form the recipe called for. She rolled the powder around to make sure it was properly dusted, after passing inspection poured the charcoal back into the bowl it came from and then used a damp cloth to wipe down the mortar to be sure it was clean.
A quick wipe dried the bowl and Phoebe placed the small white crystals into the mortar and very carefully crushed them under the pestle. Once they were in a fine powdered form, she placed the powders into a larger bowl and then added the sulphur. Re-reading the pad she slowly began to stir the mixture, careful not to catch the edge of the stone bowl. Steadily the white and yellow mixed with the black and eventually began to fade into it.
As she glanced back at the pad to check how much stirring should be sufficient to make this blackpowder most effective, the signal sounded to say someone was at the door. The sudden noise made her jump and catch the pestle on the mortar. It was only lightly but it was enough to cause a spark and ignite the bowl. The sudden explosion shattered the bowl, the cabinet and threw the women across the room into the wall, several pieces of shrapnel implanted themselves into her torso. The last thing she heard before passing out was her door opening and footsteps rushing towards her.
